Abstract:In the field of software architecture, there has been a paradigm shift from describing structural information, such as components and connectors, to documenting architectural knowledge (AK), such as design decisions and rationale. To this end, a series of industrial and academic domain models have been proposed for defining the concepts and their relationships in the field of AK. To a large extent the merit of this new paradigm is to share and reuse AK across organizations, especially in geographically distributed settings. However, the employment of different AK domain models by different parties makes effective AK sharing challenging, as it needs to be mapped from one domain model to another. In this paper, we investigate two different approaches for sharing AK, based on either direct or indirect mapping between different AK domain models. We compare the cost and quality of these two approaches, with respect to the processing of large amounts of AK instances. To predict the quality and costs of this processing in advance, a prediction model is proposed and validated with a concrete AK sharing case. Based on the comparison results, stakeholders involved with AK sharing can select an appropriate approach by trading off quality and cost in their own context.

Abstract:In the field of software architecture, there has been a paradigm shift from describing the outcome of architecting process to documenting architectural knowledge (AK), such as design decisions and rationale. To this end, a series of domain models have been proposed for defining the concepts and their relationships in the field of AK. To a large extent, the merit of this new paradigm is derived by sharing and reusing AK across organizations, especially in geographically distributed contexts. However, the employment of different AK domain models by different parties makes effective AK sharing challenging, as it needs to be mapped either from one domain model to another directly, or indirectly through a central model for simplicity when the number of AK models increases. The indirect mapping approach has proved to be a cost-effective way by sacrificing acceptable sharing quality compared with direct mapping approach. However, there exist no criteria for the selection of a high quality central model besides the intuitive judgment by domain experts. In this paper, we propose to tackle this issue by using the concept of semantic distance between AK models, which is calculated using rules based on the concept mapping relationships between the models. A high quality central model is therefore the one with the shortest semantic distance to all potential AK models.

Abstract:This technical report is trying to clarify the similar (overlapping and interweaving) concepts in documenting Architectural Knowledge (AK), and we argue that UML class diagram is appropriate for the representation of core model of AK for the purpose of AK sharing. A refined AK core model represented in UML is proposed, and four terminological frameworks from literatures and one domain model for industrial case for AK documentation are analyzed, and their respective concept mappings to the refined core model are presented.

Abstract:With the ever increasing data collected from the process, the era of big data has arrived in the process industry. Therefore, the computational effort for data modeling and analytics in standalone modes has become increasingly demanding, particularly for large-scale processes. In this paper, a distributed parallel process modeling approach is presented based on a MapReduce framework for big data quality prediction. Firstly, the architecture for distributed parallel data modeling is formulated under the MapReduce framework. Secondly, a big data quality prediction scheme is developed based on the distributed parallel data modeling approach. As an example, the basic Semi-Supervised Probabilistic Principal Component Regression (SSPPCR) model is deployed to concurrently train a set of local models with split datasets. Meanwhile, Bayesian rule is utilized in a MapReduce way to integrate local models based on their predictive abilities. Abstract:Management of software architecture knowledge (AK) is vital for improving an organization's architectural capabilities. To support the architecting process within our industrial partner: Astron, the Dutch radio astronomy institute, we implemented the Knowledge Architect (KA): a tool suite for creating, using, translating, sharing and managing AK. The KA tool suite entails specialized support for integrating the various process activities and supporting collaboration between the stakeholders. This report discusses the tools included and features of KA. We also discuss different usages of the KA for capturing and using AK to support the architecture process. On the basis of famous NK model, Agent-based Modeling on Architectural Technological Innovation was adopted to simulate the mapping of technological innovations from design parameter space (DPS) to performance parameter space (PPS). Overcoming the drawback of the past model, structure choices (the designer's needs) as well as environment choices (consumers' need) are considered in this model. Based this model, people can develop the platform of the different architectural technological innovation processes. Abstract:Knowledge is becoming the most important resource for more and more enterprises and increases exponentially, but there is not an effective method to evaluate them cogently. Based on Web2.0, this article firstly builds an enterprise knowledge sharing model. Synthetically taking the advantage of the convenience and low cost in public evaluation and of the specialty in peer review, a public and expert collaborative evaluation (PECE) model and algorithm for enterprise knowledge are put forward. Through analyzing interaction between user's domain weights and scores of knowledge points, the PECE model and algorithm serve to recognise valuable knowledge and domain experts efficiently and therefore improve ordering and utilisation of knowledge. This article also studies malicious and casual evaluation from users and a method is proposed to update user's domain weights. Finally, a case of knowledge sharing system for amanufacturing enterprise is developed and realised. User's behaviour of publishing and evaluating knowledge is simulated and then analysed to verify the feasibility of PECE algorithm based on the system.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of knowledge sharing process and way, a three-layer reference object model for supporting knowledge sharing management is developed according to the dual features of knowledge and with the help of object-oriented analysis approach. The framework of knowledge agent, knowledge and knowledge sharing scenario in the model is proposed and designed in detail respectively.Domain of enumerable attributes is also discussed. The model and the framework in this paper are a good reference to develop the knowledge sharing software.
Recovering Software Architectural Knowledge from Documentation Using Conceptual Model.

Abstract:Software architectural knowledge (AK) is the integrated representation of the software architecture (SA) of a software-intensive system, the architectural design decisions, and the external context/environment. AK annotation using AK conceptual model is used to recover formal AK from SA documentation, including architecture design as well as the design decisions, rationale, context, and other factors that together determine architecture solutions. But there is no evidence on how architects, especially junior architects, understand and annotate SA documents and recover formal AK from the documents using an AK model, which is right the case when a new architect jumps into a project, trying to understand the SA documents created by previous architects. This paper first presents AKRCM (AK Recovery using Conceptual Model) approach for recovering AK from SA documents. Second, we conduct a descriptive study using experiment to investigate how junior architects annotate SA documents and recover AK using AKRCM approach. We found that an AK conceptual model is beneficial for junior architects to get a fair understanding of SA documents, and to recover better-quality AK from SA documents.

Abstract:Quality prediction is important for precise control of industrial processes and improvements of product quality. The nonlinear and dynamic features of time-series data can be effectively extracted by the appropriate soft sensor models for quality prediction. However, the temporal features may be often considered by the conventional methods, ignoring the important spatial features, which makes the soft sensor models not have stronger generalization abilities because of insufficient feature information for quality prediction. Moreover, due to the unstable transmission signals, equipment failures, and sensor packet losses, missing values maybe present in the industrial data, which influences the accuracy of soft sensor models. To overcome those problems, a novel spatiotemporal industrial soft sensor modeling scheme is designed for quality prediction. To be specific, the generate adversarial imputation network (GAIN) is first applied for data imputation. Then, the k-nearest neighbor mutual information (kNNMI) is used for constructing the adjacency matrix of graph attention network (GAT) with the purpose of adaptive measuring the spatial correlations among process variables at different moments. After that, the temporal attention (TA) mechanism is introduced for enhancing the temporal feature extraction capability of minimal gated unit (MGU), aiming at improving the quality prediction performance. Finally, sufficient simulation experiments are conducted by a typical industrial process, hot rolling process (HRP), to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared with some classical and advanced algorithms.

Abstract:Academic information overload has brought researchers great difficulty due to the rapid growth of scientific articles. Methods have been proposed to help professional readers find relevant articles on the basis of their publications. Although effectively sharing publications is essential to spreading knowledge and ideas, few studies have focused on knowledge sharing from an author perspective. This study leverages the online academic social network to propose a recommendation approach for knowledge sharing. In our approach, we integrate researcher-level and document-level analyses in the same model. Our model works in two stages: 1) researcher-level analysis and 2) document-level analysis. The former combines research topic relevance, social relations, and research quality dimension, and the latter uses the machine learning method to learn the vector representation for each word. Online social behavior information is also leveraged to enhance readers' short-term interests. Our approach is deployed in ScholarMate, a prevalent academic social network. Compared with other baseline methods (CB, LDA, and part of the proposed approach), our approach significantly improves the accuracy of recommendations. Moreover, our method can disseminate papers efficiently to readers who have no publications.
A Semi-Parallel Active Learning Method Based on Kriging for Structural Reliability Analysis

Abstract:The reliability analysis system is currently evolving, and reliability analysis efforts are also focusing more on correctness and efficiency. The effectiveness of the active learning Kriging metamodel for the investigation of structural system reliability has been demonstrated. In order to effectively predict failure probability, a semi-parallel active learning method based on Kriging (SPAK) is developed in this study. The process creates a novel learning function called UA, which takes the correlation between training points and samples into account. The UA function has been developed from the U function but is distinct from it. The UA function improves the original U function, which pays too much attention to the area near the threshold and the accuracy of the surrogate model is improved. The semi-parallel learning method is then put forth, and it works since UA and U functions are correlated. One or two training points will be added sparingly during the model learning iteration. It effectively lowers the required training points and iteration durations and increases the effectiveness of model building. Finally, three numerical examples and one engineering application are carried out to show the precision and effectiveness of the suggested method. In application, evaluation efficiency is increased by at least 14.5% and iteration efficiency increased by 35.7%. It can be found that the proposed algorithm is valuable for engineering applications.

Abstract:Context: Software quality is a complex concept. Therefore, assessing and predicting it is still challenging in practice as well as in research. Activity-based quality models break down this complex concept into concrete definitions, more precisely facts about the system, process, and environment as well as their impact on activities performed on and with the system. However, these models lack an operationalisation that would allow them to be used in assessment and prediction of quality. Bayesian networks have been shown to be a viable means for this task incorporating variables with uncertainty. Objective: The qualitative knowledge contained in activity-based quality models are an abundant basis for building Bayesian networks for quality assessment. This paper describes a four-step approach for deriving systematically a Bayesian network from an assessment goal and a quality model. Method: The four steps of the approach are explained in detail and with running examples. Furthermore, an initial evaluation is performed, in which data from NASA projects and an open source system is obtained. The approach is applied to this data and its applicability is analysed. Results: The approach is applicable to the data from the NASA projects and the open source system. However, the predictive results vary depending on the availability and quality of the data, especially the underlying general distributions. Conclusion: The approach is viable in a realistic context but needs further investigation in case studies in order to analyse its predictive validity.

Abstract:This research paper presents an approach to enhancing the predictive capability of architects in the design and assurance of systems, focusing on systems operating in dynamic and unpredictable environments. By adopting a systems approach, we aim to improve architects' predictive capabilities in designing dependable systems (for example, ML-based systems). An aerospace case study is used to illustrate the approach. Multiple factors (challenges) influencing aircraft detection are identified, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach in a complex operational setting. Our approach primarily aimed to enhance the architect's predictive capability.

Abstract:Machine learning (ML) models have been extensively used in several geological applications. Owing to the increase in model complexity, interpreting the outputs becomes quite challenging. Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) measures the importance of each input attribute on the model's output. This study implemented SHAP to estimate earthquake probability using two different types of ML approaches, namely, artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF). The two algorithms were first compared to evaluate the importance and effect of the factors. SHAP was then carried out to interpret the output of the models designed for the earthquake probability. This study aims not only to achieve high accuracy in probability estimation but also to rank the input parameters and select appropriate features for classification. SHAP was tested on earthquake probability assessment using eight factors for the Indian subcontinent. The models obtained an overall accuracy of 96% for ANN and 98% for RF. SHAP identified the high contributing factors as epicenter distance, depth density, intensity variation, and magnitude density in a sequential order for ANN. Finally, the authors argued that an explainable artificial intelligence (AI) model can help in earthquake probability estimation, which then open avenues to building a transferable AI model.

Abstract:Enhancement of technology-based system support for knowledge workers is an issue of great importance. The "Knowledge work Support System (KwSS)" framework analyzes this issue from a holistic perspective. KwSS proposes a set of design principles for building a comprehensive IT-based support system, which enhances the capability of a human agent for performing a set of complex and interrelated knowledge-works relevant to one or more target task-types within a domain of professional activities. In this paper, we propose a high-level, software-agent based architecture for realizing a KwSS system that incorporates these design principles. Here we focus on developing a number of crucial enabling components of the architecture, including (1) an Activity Theory-based novel modeling technique for knowledgeintensive activities; (2) a graph theoretic formalism for representing these models in a knowledge base in conjunction with relevant entity taxonomies/ontologies; and (3) an algorithm for reasoning, using the knowledge base, about various aspects of possible supports for activities at performance-time.

Software Quality Prediction Using Affinity Propagation Algorithm

Abstract:Software metrics are collected at various phases of the software development process. These metrics contain the information of the software and can be used to predict software quality in the early stage of software life cycle. Intelligent computing techniques such as data mining can be applied in the study of software quality by analyzing software metrics. Clustering analysis, which can be considered as one of the data mining techniques, is adopted to build the software quality prediction models in the early period of software testing. In this paper, a new clustering method called Affinity Propagation is investigated for the analysis of two software metric datasets extracted from real-world software projects. Meanwhile, K-Means clustering method is also applied for comparison. The numerical experiment results show that the Affinity Propagation algorithm can be applied well in software quality prediction in the very early stage, and it is more effective on reducing Type II error.
Spatio-Temporal Urban Knowledge Graph Enabled Mobility Prediction

Abstract:With the rapid development of the mobile communication technology, mobile trajectories of humans are massively collected by Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs). On the other hand, the rising paradigm of knowledge graph (KG) provides us a promising solution to extract structured "knowledge" from massive trajectory data. In this paper, we focus on modeling users' spatio-temporal mobility patterns based on knowledge graph techniques, and predicting users' future movement based on the "knowledge'' extracted from multiple sources in a cohesive manner. Specifically, we propose a new type of knowledge graph, i.e., spatio-temporal urban knowledge graph (STKG), where mobility trajectories, category information of venues, and temporal information are jointly modeled by the facts with different relation types in STKG. The mobility prediction problem is converted to the knowledge graph completion problem in STKG. Further, a complex embedding model with elaborately designed scoring functions is proposed to measure the plausibility of facts in STKG to solve the knowledge graph completion problem, which considers temporal dynamics of the mobility patterns and utilizes PoI categories as the auxiliary information and background knowledge. Extensive evaluations confirm the high accuracy of our model in predicting users' mobility, i.e., improving the accuracy by 5.04% compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms. In addition, PoI categories as the background knowledge and auxiliary information are confirmed to be helpful by improving the performance by 3.85% in terms of accuracy. Additionally, experiments show that our proposed method is time-efficient by reducing the computational time by over 43.12% compared with existing methods.

Abstract:Knowledge management has been playing an increasingly prominent role in soft- ware engineering in both academic and industrial perspectives. Meanwhile, the software architecture community has recently witnessed a paradigm shift towards managing architectural knowledge (AK), and consolidated research results have been achieved. Within the software development lifecycle, requirements engineer- ing (RE) and architecting are two closely related activities, and so are their asso- ciated knowledge. This report makes a literature survey on RE from a knowledge perspective, and proposes to reuse the research outcomes for AK management in RE. We target specific RE problems and present knowledge-based ideas to tackle them by integrating concrete results from the AK community. This work can sub- sequently stimulate further research in knowledge-based RE, which may in turn feed its results back into software architecture.

Abstract:The quality of model-based definition (MBD) models is one of the significant challenges to achieving model-based enterprise (MBE). Different stakeholders in MBE put forward different quality requirements for MBD models, while any quality defect may hinder the production. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the quality of MBD models adequately before the usage. However, existing quality tools are difficult to apply in MBE. A knowledge-based quality analysis system for MBD part models is presented in this paper. The system utilizes model quality knowledge to analyze model quality from the perspective of various stakeholders in MBE. And it can be extended by adding new MBD part model quality knowledge. In order to judge model quality, a concept of the model definition unit is introduced for converting model information into the description towards model semantics quality, and a quality analysis method based on this description is proposed. For the ease of model quality knowledge representation and maintenance, a knowledge representation framework based on the object chain and parameter table is developed. Finally, a prototype system is implemented to verify the effectiveness and practicality. With 46 knowledge items derived from eight model-used stages, in total 24 potential quality defects are found in two case models. And additional two defects are discovered by extending the system with new model quality knowledge. In this way, the model quality is improved from the perspective of corresponding users.
