Abstract:A series of N-alkyl or N-aryl chitosan quaternary ammonium salts were prepared via Schiffs base intermediates. Quaternization of N-substituted chitosan derivatives was carried out using methyl iodide to produce water-soluble cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt. The products were characterized by IR, (HNMR)-H-1 and elemental analysis. The degree of substitution of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt was calculated by elemental analysis.

The structure of this modified chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (simply named in the paper as MCQA) was characterized with FT-IR, H-1-NMR and Chemical titration method. The antibacterial activity of quaternized chitosan against staphylococcus aureus was investigated. It was found that the antibacterial activity of quaternized chitosan against staphylococcus aureus is much stronger than that of chitosan.

Abstract:Chitosan has many unique properties, such as the extensive sources, renewability, excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. To improve the water solubility of chitosan is an effective approach to overcome the limitations of its application. In this paper, three water-soluble chitosan acid salts were prepared via a simple and green process by using chitosan and amino acids as the original materials. The water solubility and the moisture absorption of the prepared chitosan salts were tested. Meanwhile, three chitosan amino acid salts were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and potentiometric titration. The results showed that the water solubility of three chitosan salts was greatly improved and the moisture absorption was more than 15.3%-32.8% higher than that of chitosan. Structural analysis indicated that the formation of chitosan amino acid salts were via protonation reaction rather than simple physical adsorption. Relative to chitosan, the crystallinity of chitosan amino acid salts were decreased. The structural change of chitosan has greatly improved its performance and expanded its application fields.

Abstract:Poisonous solvents were widely used in the preparation of N-succinyl-chitosan,which were easy to cause environmental pollution and difficult to remove completely from the products.These disadvantages limited their uses in biomedical materials.In the present work,a novel method was proposed to successfully synthesize N-succinyl-chitosan,which was safe and environmentally friendly.A series of N-succinyl-chitosan with different degrees of substitution were prepared in absolute ethanol by controlling the reaction time.The different degrees of substitution,molecular weight and polydispersity index of the products were measured.The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy,X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and thermogravimetry(TG).Furthermore,the water-solubility and biocompatibility were studied.When the reaction time is 15 h,the degree of substitution and molecular weight of the product are highest.Moreover,polydispersity index of the product is smallest among all the products(10 h,12 h,15 h,18 h,20 h).In addition,the results indicate N-succinyl-chitosan has been synthesized with decreased degree of crystallization and thermostability.Water-solubility of modified chitosan is improved due to the decrease of crystallization.N-succinyl-chitosan prepared in absolute ethanol has good biocompatibility,which has great potential in biomedical fields.

Abstract:β-chitosan preparation from squid pens was carried out using aqueous NaOH with the ultrasonic assistance. Single factor experiments and L9(34) orthogonal experiments were used to investigate the effect of three parameters (reaction time, concentration of NaOH and reaction temperature) on deacetylation of β-chitin. The optimal conditions for deacetylation of chitin were reaction temperature 80°C, reaction time 2 h and concentration of NaOH 50%. The optimal conditions allowed deacetylation degree of β-chitin from 71.32% to 92.91%. The β-chitosan from squid pens was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The antibacterial activities of the prepared β-chitosans againstaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) andEscherchia coli(E.coli) were then determined and compared by the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration). Results indicate that β-chitosans with different degrees of deacetylation (DD) possess different antibacterial activity. The growth ofS. aureuscan be easily inhibited by prepared β-chitosan thanE.coli.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan derivatives N-(glycidyltrimethylammonium) chitosan chloride(GTCC) is synthesized by reacting chitosan with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride. It is proved that the coagulation of GTCC features small dosage and effective turbidity and oil removal by a series of coagulation experiments of treatment of oil refining wastewater. In addition, the amount of SRB in the oil refining wastewater and liquid after coagulation by GTCC was tested. It is proved that GTCC has a high ability of killing SRB. So a cooperative theory of coagulation-sterilization is proposed.

Abstract:Objective:With the local lobster shell as the raw material,we inquire into the abstraction and preparation of chitin and chitosan to develop a new raw material resources for chitosan.Methods:Use methods such as take off protein,calcium,colour,deacetylate and purification to prepare chitosan to study deacetylate degree,molecular weight and other characters of chitosan,then compare with infrared spectrum of bio-chemical chitosan on market.Results:The chitin and chitosan obtained from lobster shell are 14.8% and 8.9%,respectively.The infrared spectrum of chitosan between local lobster and lobster on sale is consistent.The other technical indexes are also accordance with document.Conclusion:Use methods such as taking off protein,calcium,colour,deacetylate and purification to abstract and preparing chitin and chitosan from Xuyu's local lobster shell.The technology,equipments,operation are simple and have strong popularization.The chitin abstracted from Xuyu's local lobster shell is rather high,it's a natural resources to prepare chitosan and is worth to exploit and utilize.

Abstract:Chitosan derivatives, including O- carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), N -(2-hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride)- O -carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC), and N -(2-hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride)- O -dodecylylpyridine chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (DQCMC), were synthesized and characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and element analysis (EA). The antibacterial activities of chitosan and chitosan derivatives against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were evaluated through the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and antibacterial rate assays. Results demonstrated that DQCMC exhibited significantly higher antibacterial efficacy compared to chitosan, CMC, and QCMC. The MIC of DQCMC against E. coli and S. aureus were 31 μg/mL and 7 μg/mL, respectively, with a 100% antibacterial rate at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. Furthermore, assessment of mouse fibroblast (L929) cell viability using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) methods revealed no toxicity associated with the material.

Abstract:Two kinds of chitosans, namely N-acetylated and N-deacetylated chitosan were prepared by the modified processes. They can dissolve in both acid and alkali solution. 13C NMR was used to study the basic solution of chitosan, and XRD, FT-IR and SEM were used to study the structure of N-acetylated and N-deacetylated chitosan. The result from X-ray diffraction showed that a transformation of crystal structure occurred during the N-acetylation or N-deacetylation process with the decrease of crystallinity and expansion of crystal lattices. FT-IR spectra revealed that the intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds were destroyed by both treatments and a looser structure was observed by the SEM. The lower crystallinity, the decreased intermolecular interactions, the more disordered and looser structure were easy for the permeation of LiOH/urea aqueous solution and coordinated with the breakage of intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bond by LiOH at low temperature, the prepared chitosans dissolved in LiOH/urea/H2O mixture.

Abstract:The effect of NaOH/urea solution freeze-thaw pretreatment to the chitosan of purity and the degree of deacetylation from the crab shell was examined. Higher purity chitosan (CS1) was prepared. On this basis, the raw materials after the first demineralization were pretreated with NaOH/urea solution freeze-thaw under different freeze-thaw situations. The produced chitosans (CS1-CS4) were characterized in the ash content, solubility, protein content, degree of deacetylation, viscosity average molecular weight, SEM, FTIR, XRD, antimicrobial activity. The results showed that the freeze-thaw process had advantageous influence on decreasing the ash content and increasing degree of deacetylation and antibacterial activity. Moreover, the antibacterial property of the extracted chitosans seemed to be positively related to their degree of deacetylation. It is concluded that CS4 had the lowest ash content (0.052%), the highest degree of deacetylation (86.02%) and the greatest antibacterial activity. Therefore, we recommend CS4 as agent for industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract:Methods for synthesis of reactive quaternary ammonium salt surfactants were systematically summarized. According to the features of molecular structure,various types of reactive quaternary ammonium salt surfactant were classified and compared. Methods for synthesis of several types of reactive quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactants with specific functional groups( double bond,epoxy,hydroxy and amide) were introduced. Industrial applications of the surfactants,such as corrosion inhibiting and anti- scaling agent, solubilizing and sensitizing agent,co- polymerizable emulsifier,clay stabilizer,sheet softener as well as phase transfer catalyst were expounded. Currently existing deficiencies of the reactive quaternary ammonium salt surfactants and the development trend was prospected.

Abstract:By treating chitin with ultrasonic in hot concentrated NaOH solution for about 30-120min, chitosan swellable highly in alkali was prepared. The swelling behavior and the structure of the prepared chitosan were invested. It was shown that the prepared chitosan can swell highly in NaOH solution by freeze-thawing treatment, with the particles turns into hydrogel. The swelling behavior showed that with the increase of NaOH concentration, the swelling degree of chitosan increases, until a concentration of 8.0 wt%, and ultrasonic treatment time has less significant influence on the swelling behavior. SEM showed that ultrasonic treatment makes the structure of chitin enough looser for the permeation of NaOH and H2O, resulting in the swelling of chitosan in alkali solution.

Abstract:Chitosan quaternary ammonium salt antibacterial agents with a single structure have the drawbacks of slow bactericidal speed and poor bactericidal effect, which cannot meet the practical usage requirements. To address the problem, in this study, we designed and synthesized a novel chitosan derivative containing double quaternary ammonium salt and chloride hydantoin structures (QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl) by using chitosan, 5,5-dimethyl hydantoin, methyl iodide, and 2-Dimethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride as the main raw materials, and then used as antibacterial agent. The structure of QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric, and Scanning electron microscopy. The antibacterial activity of QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl, and the renewability and stability of N-Cl structure in QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl were explored. The results indicated that the N-Cl structure of QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl has strong renewability and storage stability. Moreover, the synergistic effect of quaternary ammonium salt structure and N-Cl structure endowed QCS-CA-DEADH-Cl with excellent antibacterial activity. This work does not only provide a new perspective for the preparation of novel chitosan antibacterial agents but also contributes to expanding the comprehensive utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:An efficient adsorbent (a quaternary ammonium salt-modified chitosan microsphere, CTA-CSM) was synthesized via an emulsion cross-linking reaction between 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTA) and chitosan (CS). The adsorption efficiency of the CTA-CSM as an adsorbent was studied using methyl orange dye to evaluate its suitability for wastewater purification. The characterization results showed that the CTA groups were successfully grafted onto the CS microspheres, and the as-prepared CTA-CSM samples exhibited a smooth surface and good dispersibility. The modification of CTA on CTA-CSM significantly improved its ability to remove methyl orange dye. The adsorption process of methyl orange by CTA-CSM was well described by the Langmuir isotherm model and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum removal rate (98.9%) and adsorption capacity (131.9 mg/g) of CTA-CSM was higher than those of other previous reports; its removal rate for methyl orange was still up to 87.4% after five recycles. Hence, CTA-CSM is a very promising material for practical dyeing wastewater purification.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In this study, three types of dodecyl chitosan quaternary ammonium salts, each with different spacer groups were synthesized. These chitosan derivatives are N′ , N′ -dimethyl- N′- dodecyl-ammonium chloride- N -amino-acetyl chitosan (DMDAC), N′- dodecyl- N -isonicotinyl chitosan chloride (DINCC) and N′ , N′ -dimethyl- N′- dodecyl-ammonium chloride- N -benzoyl chitosan (DMDBC). The synthesized products were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the introduction of hydrophobic groups of spacer groups could enhance the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the chitosan derivatives. The antibacterial rates of the chitosan derivatives were over 90 % for both E. coli and S. aureus at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. The chitosan derivatives removed >50 % of the mature biofilm of E. coli and over 90 % of the mature biofilm of S. aureus at a concentration of 2.5 mg/mL. Further, the synthesized chitosan derivatives were determined to be non-toxic to L929 cells. Among them, DMDBC exhibited the most promising overall performance and show potential for wide-ranging applications in food preservation, disinfectants, medical, and other fields.

Abstract:Cationic derivatives of pectin were prepared by reacting pectin with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) in presence of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The chemical structures of derivative were characterized by using elemental analysis, FT-IR, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The results revealed that the degree of substitution (DS) of quaternized pectin (QP) could be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of CHPTAC to pectin, the molar ratio of NaOH to CHPTAC and reaction temperature occurred during quaternization. The moisture absorption (R-a) and moisture retention (R-h) abilities of QP are closely related to the DS value. With the DS value increasing, R-a and R-h increased. In vitro antimicrobial activity assessment exhibited QP showed pronounced inhibitory effect against the three bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis). Abstract:Quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) was prepared from which carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) was prepared from chitosan first, then N-quaternary ammonium group was introduced by the reaction of CMC with 2, 3-epoxypropyl trimethylammonium. The structures of the derivatives were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, 13C NMR, 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography. In vitro antimicrobial activities of QCMC were evaluated against Escherichia coli, which is a Gram-negative bacterium, and Staphylococcus aureus, which is a Gram-positive bacterium. In compared with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and quarternary chitosan (QC) of the same degree of substitusion (DS), we found that QCMC has stronger antimicrobial activity. Then we went deep into study of the relationship between their structure and antimicrobial activity, found that the DS of CMC do little effect to their antimicrobial activity, but as the increase of their DS of quaternization or the decrease of their molecular weight, the antimicrobial activity of QCMC become stronger. QCMC was complexed with calcium hydroxide as pulp-cap. Animal experiment results indicated that QCMC can strongly induce reparative dentine formation and showed a better ability in dentin inducing compared with calcium hydroxide.
