Abstract:The study of Chinese syntax began with the advent of Chinese grammar. Syntactic classifications have hitherto been carried out in the light of different grammatical theories and systems, giving birth to diverse and even mutually exclusive sentence patterns. It is suggested in this essay that, in the study of Chinese syntax, priority be given to the establishment of a whole system of scientifically defined, general, concise, and practical sentence patterns in consistency with Chinese grammatical rules.

Abstract:Volume 7 of the Tsinghua manuscripts contains multiple historiographical narratives interspersed with punctuation. This article looks into two manuscripts likely prepared in the same workshop and possibly by the same scribe. I examine how punctuation in the manuscripts engages with the structure of the texts, forming a particular reading experience and understanding of the sectioning of the narrative. The article suggests that the use of punctuation in these manuscripts reflects the punctuator's understanding of the narrative divisions and main points of the texts. Far from merely marking individual sentences, the punctuation selectively marks sections and subsections in the narrative, corresponding to changes of interlocutor, scene and setting, and key information supporting a particular reading of the sense of the texts. The punctuator chose to amplify certain aspects of the narrative-for example, advisors outdoing their superiors-by highlighting certain sections of the text more than others. By examining the ways in which punctuation and narrative structure interact in these two case studies, the article aims to understand the complex relation between punctuation and narrative structure. In doing so, it evaluates the potential agency of punctuators in shaping the reading experience of early historiographical narrative texts.

Abstract:Hong Xingzu's Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)is one of the most important exegeses in ancient annotated texts of Chuci,it has many versions.Zhonghua Publisher printed the punctuated text of Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)in 1983.This punctuated text uses the Jiguge version as the original text,compiled by Bai Huawen and his assistants,but there have some errors in emendation and punctuation in the punctuated text.Depending on contrasting the various versions of Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)and other works,this paper correct such errors above thiry items for inviting the specialists to offer their criticisms.

Abstract:Studies on Chinese sentences with shi (ÊÇ) as predicate have been profoundly fruitful from the perspective of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In a broader sense, however, a large number of sentences with shi functioning as other syntactic roles - adverb, conjunction, auxiliary and even interjection - are practically used, and stand as barriers to natural language processing (NLP) and machine translation (MT). The special fragments consisting of shi plus punctuation are divided into "shi plus comma" and "comma plus shi", which are examined and discussed with the instruments of corpora, illustrations and comparison. Two exceptional fragments are also briefed to improve the precision in computer identification of these shi-plus-punctuation fragments.

Abstract:In recent years,several kinds of annotations translations of Sanguozhi have been published.Each has its merits,but there are still some problems in respect of collation and explanation.In this article,we discuss those problems from three angles:topsy turviness of collation and explanation;misreading due to unfamilarity with the content;misreading due to unfamilarity with the language.We suggest that,in order to improve the annotations translations of Sanguozhi,we should pay much attention to the following study:a.to try to get familiar with classics,especially those before Wei Jin;b.to absorb all the fruits of Sanguozhi studies;c.to strengthen the studies of Sanguo culture and middle ancient chinese.

Abstract:Many scholars such as Wu Wen-zhi,Zhou Wei-de have already made great efforts on the collection,edition,and collation of the notes on poets and poetry of the Ming Dynasty.They have got remarkable achievement while provided a solid foundation for the research of Ming.However,there still leaves a lot of work deserving to be proceeded further in this field since the emergence of new materials and methods.In such a context of study in literature of Ming Dynasty,this article aims to make some further research on a few aspects of this issue: the total amount,the edition and collation,the biographical verification of the notes.It supposes to arouse more academic concerns and promote the development in this field.

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses three topics. First, it discusses the line “I could not fill my slanting basket” 不盈頃筐 in the poem “Juan er” 卷耳. The Anhui University Bamboo Slip version’s qing 頃 (slanting) is written . This, as with the Chu Silk Manuscript character, should be explained as qi 攲 (lopsided). Second, regarding the line “Do you not understand me?” 不諒人只 in the poem “Bai zhou” 柏舟 of the Yong Airs 鄘風 section, the Anhui University Bamboo Slip version of liang 諒 (understanding) is written jing 京. This character should be understood as qiang 強 in the sense of “coerce/force” 強迫. In the line “Supporting King Wu” 涼彼武王 in the poem “Da ming” 大明 of the Major Elegantiae 大雅, liang 涼 is similarly explained as 強 in the sense of “coerce” 威強. These two characters have always been traditionally glossed as either “trust” 信 or “assist” 佐. Third, regarding the line “... it cannot be recited” 不可讀也 of the poem “Qiang you ci” 牆有茨, du 讀 (reciting) in the Han Poetry 韓詩 is glossed in the sense of “record and narrate” 記述, which is superior to the traditional gloss.

Abstract:This article analyzes and corrects 61 mistakes in Zhouli Zhengyi(Vol.4)published by Zhonghua Book Company,which includes incorrect acceptances on the views between the Yis(i乙巳)edition and the Chu(楚)edition,and mutual mistakes resulting from the context,similar graphemes and meanings as well as redundancy,transpositions and wrong provenances.In addition,this article detects 46 mistakes in punctuations,omitted collations,confusing quotations,incorrect pauses,pauses at the wrong places,and mistakes in marking book titles,geographical and personal names.

Abstract:The punctuated and emendated edition of《New Tang History》which was published by ZhongHua publishing house is famous for the world,on the other hand there are some limitations. The new recension will still use the same original edition Bainaben. we will exactly collate all kinds of fragments of Song editon,extant and integrated Yuan editions which include the Ming's recension,company with Jigu attic edition of Mr mao, WU-ying-dian of Qing dynasty and zhejiang pubishing house edition, we will emphasize on comparing the book to itself and the others.At the same time, we will absorb the researches of former wisdoms and contemporary scholars to provide a new untimate edition which has strict criterion, accurate punctuation and aborative collation.

Abstract:While few would contest the importance of phonology and aural considerations in the study of classical Chinese poetry, the musicality of guwen (sic) (ancient-style prose essays) writing has attracted little attention thus far. This article redresses this imbalance by examining the critical discourse of the Tongcheng.. guwen writers of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Liu Dakui (sic) (1698-1779), Yao Nai (sic) (1731-1815), Mei Zengliang (sic) (1786-1856), Fang Dongshu (sic)(1772-1851), Zhang Yuzhao (sic)(1823-1894), Zeng Guofan (sic) (18111872), and YaoYongpu (sic)(?-1939) all were deeply concerned with, and actively reflected on, the role of sound in guwen writing: both its effect on the reader and its significance in the training of the writer. For them, sensitivity to sound would not only ensure the perfect, empathic comprehension of a given essay but also would support the composition of essays capable of producing a perfectly empathic response in a reader. Furthermore, in a demonstration that this was not an unprecedented development in the history of Chinese literature, the authors trace the relationship between musical and poetic aesthetics from the Shijing up to the Qing dynasty. In doing so, they point to several key moments when these two sets of concerns were sharply distinct, and others when they cross-pollinate to significant effect.
On the Variation of the Versions of Zhouyi Zhu Shu and Additional Remarks on Ruan＇s Version of Zhouyi Zheng Yi

Abstract:The combination in inscribing WANG Bi＇s Annotations and KONG Ying-da＇s further explanations of the Zhouyi started from the eight-line version of the Southern Song Tea Salt Department. Then,there also appeared ten-line versions. It was based on ten-line versions that RUAN Yuan＇s Chong kan shisan jin zhu shu （Re-inscribed Annotations and Further Explanations of the Thirteen Confucian Classics） was completed. Scholars had pointed out that ten-line versions were inscribed in the Yuan dynasty and revised in the Ming dynasty. However,we should clarity the transmission of different ten-line versions. The ten-line version on which RUAN Yuan＇s version was based was a version which contains most errors. By examining RUAN＇s re-inscription,we can find that the mistake occurred in the selection of the master copy but not in the inscribing works. Meanwhile,basing on the case of Zhouyi zheng yi （Rectification of the Meanings of the Zhouyi）,it can be seen that the relationship between the ten-line version and Min,Jian,and Mao＇s versions is not merely a successive transmission asserted by the past literati. As a matter of fact,Min＇s version was based on a nine-line version inscribed in the Yuan dynasty from which the revised ten-line version of the Ming dynasty was derived. In the multitude of versions of the Zhouyi zhu shu,the version of Wu yin dian （Hall of Martial Valor） and that of Si ku （Four Treasuries） are easily neglected,whereas these versions are characteristic both in the collation and division of volumes.

Abstract:This paper discusses some variant characters in the remarks affiliated to Sui(Hexagram 17 in current version), Wu Wang(Hexagram 25), Xian(Hexagram 31), and Heng(Hexagram 32) in the Zhouyicopied on the bamboo slips of Chu, and raises new interpretations to the remarks attached to the top line of Sui, those to the hexagram Wu Wang, as well as the remarks to its second and fifth lines, remarks to the initial and top lines of hexagram Heng. This discussion is of fundamental significance to the studies of the Text ofZhouyi.
