Abstract:Post-damage behaviors of an inner-outer combined reticulated shell-string structure employed by Yueqing new gymnasium after cable ruptures are investigated.Analytical results such as redistributions of internal forces and nodal displacements of the structure after continuous ruptures in different cables are obtaind by developed VFIFE program and the birth-dead element method in ANSYS.Through static analyses of load state,the program of VFIFE is validated.Simulation of dynamic procedures after cable ruptures demonstrates the advantages of VFIFE in dealing with nonlinear structural dynamic problems.Numerical results show the inner-outer combined reticulated shell-string structure has good resistance against progressive damages in that it has adequate static load carrying capacity after individual cable rupture.However,the structural responses are amplified as a result of dynamic effects,which may lead to instability of the reticulated shell in local areas close to the ruptured cables.This study provides references for the future maintenance and cable exchange of the structure,as well as the collapse resistance design of pre-stressed spatial structures.
Theoretical Analysis and Experimental Study on Sensitivity of Element-Length Error in Cable-Strut Tensile Structures

Abstract:In a real cable-strut tensile structure, the element-length errors are inevitable. To understand their effects on the bearing capacity of a cable-strut tensile structure, the element-length error sensitivity analysis was investigated in this study. First, mathematical model of the element-length error was proposed based on stochastic theory. By combining the balance equation, geometric equation, and physical equation, the fundamental equation between the pre-stress deviation and element-length error was derived. After that, pre-stress deviation statistics characteristic was achieved with the help of statistical theory and the element-length error sensitivity analysis method was formulated. Then, a cable-strut tensile structure model with a diameter of 5.0 m was designed and fabricated to validate the proposed method. The element-length was set adjustable in order to simulate the element-length errors. Making use of the measured internal forces induced by element-length errors, the error sensitivity of each kind of element was achieved. In addition, a finite element model was also established with the commercial software ANSYS. The element-length errors were simulated by the changes of element-length due to temperature variations. The results of the three models coincided with each other satisfactorily, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed mathematical model. It was found that different elements had different error sensitivities. The error sensitivity of the hoop cables was most prominent, the ridge cables and diagonal cables the second, and the struts the third.

Abstract:The rib-patterned spatial cable-truss tensile structure with annular plane is a new type of large-span spatial structural system. A structure model with an outer diameter of 5 meters and 16 cable-truss structural units was designed and the experiment was carried out on the basis of theoretical research. The static behavior and free-vibration properties of the model with different prestress levels under the condition of multi-load cases and multistep loading were studied. The calculated results of finite element analysis were verified by the test data, and the shape-forming process of the flexible system was simulated and discussed finally. The investigation showed that after the necessary structural rigidity has been built up with a certain feasible prestress introduced, the structural behavior is linear elastic and the structure has an excellent load-carrying capacity under normal load, but its deformation under asymmetrically distributed load is obvious and its lateral rigidity needs to be strengthened. The shape-forming process of the structure should be performed by designed steps and the structural stresses tend to an uniform redistribution.
Analysis method of cable's prestressing force correction construction for prestressed space structures

Abstract:Aiming at large errors of cable's prestressing force in prestressed space structures, a new mechanics analysis method of cable's prestressing force correction construction was presented. The analysis process was divided into two phases. In the first phase, the analysis was started at the 'zero prestressing force status' of the structure, and ended at the 'measured prestressing force status' of the structure with prestressing force errors. The subsistent tensile force calculation values of each cable were forced to meet the measured values through structural analysis and calculation. In the second phase, the starting point of analysis was the 'measured prestressing force status', and the ending point was the ideal 'designed prestressing force status' of the structure. The subsistent tensile force calculation values of each cable were forced to meet the design values through structural analysis and calculation, so the correction construction prestressing force values of each cable could be solved exactly using a few steps of iteration calculation. The illustrative example shows that, this new analysis method can be applied to the prestressing force correction construction simulation analysis for prestressed structures. The cable's prestressing force correction construction will be methodic, simple and accurate with the results of the analysis.

Abstract:As a geometrically flexible system, studies of the behaviour of cable domes should take into account the nonlinear feature and the existence of the prestressing force. In this paper a mixed nonlinear finite element equation of cable domes is first established and solved by combining two-node bar elements and two-node curved cable elements. Then a physical model with 5m diameter is tested to investigate the static response of a cable dome under symmetric and anti-symmetric loads. The experimental results show good consistency with the analytical results, which verifies that theproposed nonlinear analytical nodel is reliable. Further conclusions are obtained at the end of the paper.

Abstract:This paper presents a brief introduction on recent application of cables in light structures. Prestressibility is a common characteristic of the cables in various light structures. Some structures need prestress to keep stability, such as tensegrity structures and cable domes. For these structures, a process of form-finding is needed to determine the geometrical configurations of them. The form-finding of cable structures is modeled as constrained optimization problems, and direct search methods are proposed to solve these problems. The structural response of cable structures is usually geometrically nonlinear, and sometime even mechanism displacements are involved. A general theory so-called nonlinear force method for analysis of the structural systems with mechanism displacements is proposed. Shape adjustment in the construction of cable structures or in the control of adoptable cable structures are investigated. Optimization models and numerical algorithms are proposed to optimize the control process. © 2010 ASCE.

Abstract:In some cable-strut structures,the special type of joins are designed to allow the cables to slide through freely.The cable cannot be simplified as a 2-node straight bar with the end fixed by the joins,and a special modification is needed in a traditional finite element method.A new developed algorithm called the finite particle method (FPM) is applied to the cable slide analysis.It models a continuous cable by a set of finite particles,and the motion of each particle follows Newton's second law.The cable slide behavior is described by the motion of particles.The formulations to calculate the internal forces of the sliding cable element are derived.The criterion for the determination of a relationship between joins and sliding cable elements is also proposed.The results of numerical examples calculated by self-designed program verify the rationality of the sliding cable element used for cable slide situations.

Abstract:As cable dome is a geometrically flexible structure, studies on its behavior should take into account the nonlinear features. In the work, a set of cable dome nonlinear finite element equations was proposed involving two-node bar elements and two-node curved cable elements. The sag effect due to the cable deadweight was also considered. Detailed experimental research was conducted on a model with diameter of 5 m and the behavior of the model subject to different external loads was investigated. The experimental results' good consistency with analytical results prove that the proposed nonlinear analytical model is reliable and effective. The experimental research also indicates the correct length of cables and struts and the proper design of nodes are the two key points of cable dome structures.

Abstract:A general and reliable method was explored to improve the calculative efficiency and precision during the construction analysis to ensure the analysis results guide the practical construction. Two different simulations of construction process of the same cable dome were analyzed based on the finite element software ANSYS. The coordinates of the control points, component internal force and geometric configuration were obtained to study the construction process. Comparison of two construction processes shows that the variations of component force and geometric configuration in the construction process are related to the construction methods, and the diagonal cable has reinforced effect to the structure from inner to outer. Two construction processes are similar under given conditions. Calculation processes also show that the construction simulation based on ANSYS is general and efficient.

Abstract:Cable-strut structures are flexible structures which are very sensitive to their shape variation. Addition of actuators in selected members of cable-strut structures provides an efficient way to control the structural shape, thus enhances the structural performance. Although a large number of research studies have been performed to achieve shape control via linear force method, it has been proved that nonlinear force method is more accurate due to the existence of nonlinearity characters in cable-strut structures. The aim of this article is proposing an approach based on the nonlinear force method to change the shape of cable-strut structures under external load with respect to different control targets. The formulas and calculation procedure of structure’s nonlinear response to external load and length variation of members are established based on nonlinear force method. Then, solving strategy for determining the minimum required number of actuators and testing the feasibility for arrangement plan of actuators is provided for different control targets. Two numerical cases are demonstrated using the proposed approach to obtain the structural behavior before and after the control process. The effectiveness of the algorithm can be verified through numerical results.
Cable force adjustment and post-adjusting nonlinear analysis of a cable-stayed bridge based on ANSYS

Abstract:In the analysis of the live load nonlinearity and ultimate bearing capacity of a cable-stayed bridge, the planned construction state or the completed state of the bridge must be first obtained by adjusting the cable forces; then, further analysis for the next load step can be done by adding loads to the structure of this kind state. To achieve this aim, the paper re-develops an ANSYS-based finite element program, which takes the large displacement effect, p-Δ effect and cable sag effect into account, by using APDL in ANSYS software and the virtual temperature load method for cable force adjustment. A cable-stayed bridge test model is computationally analyzed for its cable force adjustment and the follow-up nonlinearity under live loads. The analysis results are in good accord with the experimental ones, which verifies that the program is reasonable and practicable for the calculation of adjusting cable forces and the nonlinear analysis of post-adjusting cable-stayed bridge can be done in the very same model.
Form finding and design optimization of cable network structures with flexible frames

Abstract:<p>Cable network structures consist of the cable networks and supporting frames, and the whole structures form the equilibrium states under the interactions between them. The existing methods haven't considered the flexibility of the supporting frames and thus fail to fully capture the interactive effect between cable networks and flexible frames in the design optimization. This leads to the deviations between the design results and the real equilibrium states. Here we propose a form finding and design optimization approach for cable network structures with flexible frames. By solving the non-compatibility problem between cable and beam elements (due to rotation DOF), the cable network and supporting frame can be coupled to accurately model the real equilibrium state in the optimization model. We also derive the linear form for the determination of the free node coordinates from systematic equilibrium equations, which greatly reduces the computing cost of the optimization design and makes the multi-variable optimization more achievable. The proposed approach is effective for the form finding and design optimization of flexible supported cable networks with high surface accuracy requirements and multiple design variables. It is applied to mesh reflector antennas, and case studies are provided to verify the effectiveness of the methodology.</p>

Abstract:The developments of physical models of deformable cable-like linear objects are summarized, including mass-spring, multi-body, elastic rod, dynamic spline, finite element models, and so forth.Some complex issues are introduced and discussed, including the plastic deformation of flexible cables, modelling of thin viscous threads, modelling of branched cables, modelling of cross-sections, and influence of temperature and alternating stress.Some opinions on the future research directions are put forward.Designing the layouts and simulating the assembly of cables are based on flexible cable modeling technology. In this paper, we review the methods used to model deformable cable-like objects. At present, the physical models of one-dimensional cable-like flexible objects are mostly elastic. There are different types of models, which we can classify as mass–spring, multi-body, elastic rod, dynamic spline, finite element models, and so forth. There are a number of significant issues, such as how to couple these models in an appropriate way, take more physical behaviors into account, and develop a more sophisticated/comprehensive model. Some researchers have also studied how to model plastic cables, thin viscous threads, and branched cables; however, those issues are far from fully resolved and need to be studied further. Furthermore, we believe that in future research it will be important to model the cross-sections of cables with different or deformable shapes and complex internal structures, and consider the influence of temperature and alternating stress.

Abstract:In this paper,a three-dimensional finite element model for single pylon and double cable plane cable-stayed bridge is created to analyze the dynamic performance of Linjiangmen Cable-Stayed Bridge in Jilin.The numerical calculation results with the model are agreed fairly well with those of dynamic tests,which manifest that the model can be well used for analysis of the dynamic behavior of the single pylon and double cable plane cable-stayed bridge and can serve as reference to the analysis of dynamic behavior of similar bridges.

Abstract:Multiwire cable structures equipped with clamps are widely used in civil engineering, such as suspension bridges, and their bending stiffness is always neglected in design. However, in practice, bending can be important locally when the sudden changes of cable curvature occur due to hanger forces loaded group by group during construction. Moreover, the main cable, composed of high-strength steel wires, has a secondary sectional bending stiffness that changes and with its tension state, being small (flexible) at the first stages and increasing gradually until reaching a notable rigidity (stiff). This, along with the effect of clamps leads to a Flexible-Stiff Coupling Multi-stiffnesses (FSCM) properties with geometrical and mechanical nonlinearities. Ignoring this might introduce uncontrollable shape errors during installation. To fill the gap of a shape analysis considering the FSCM, an analytical method as Chord Substitution Method (CSM) is proposed. The chord line geometry of the structure is taken as an independent object, and then the system equilibrium can be represented with a set of chain pole equations based on an established physic model of cable segment. The extension of each chord rod is modeled with a composite-chord-spring considering both axial and bending geometric stiffnesses. The cable curvature effect at clamps can be modeled by correcting external forces to satisfy a bending compatibility condition. The effectiveness of the CSM is validated by a previous model test found in the literature, and a real example is used for comparative studies. This method might be promising for a refined construction design and monitoring control of such structures.

Abstract:According to structure feature of modern prestressed concrete(P.C.) cable-stayed bridge and its stress characteristics,degenerated solid element was adopted to build 3D models of cantilever casting analysis for P.C.cable-stayed bridge.The prestressed reinforcement was taken as a part of structure,and the prestressing effect was simulated by equivalent node loads.The concrete creep effect was computed by a three-parameter viscoelastic model. The formula to calculate the action of concrete casting was deduced on the basis of the deformation compatibility condition of trailing cable′s anchorage.One P.C.cable-stayed bridge as an example was studied in application.The results show that the method is better than the classic two-dimensional method.It can give a correct prediction of cable tensions,and provide a sound basis for construction control and checking.
Analytical Model for the Bending of Parallel Wire Cables Considering Interactions among Wires

Abstract:Bending behaviors can be critical in simulating cables, such as the local effects close to cable end regions or dynamic properties of short cables. Wires form up the cable and tend to slip relative to each other under bending load. Complex interactions among wires make the modeling of cables challenging. In this work, we propose an analytical model for bending parallel wire cables in which the cable cross section with layered wires is idealized as a composite section of the laminated beam. The slips and interactive forces among wires are modeled by the interfacial slips and the resulting interactive forces at the interfaces of the composite section. In this way, the bending cable can transform into an in-plane stress state laminated beam. The state space method is then applied to solve the problem, and the numerical results agree well with the experimental results and analytical formulations in the literature. Bending stiffness of the cable differs from lower bound to upper bound according to the anti-slip ability among wires, from full-slip state to no-slip state. The overall deflection, as well as the local deformations and stresses of the bending cable, can be simultaneously obtained. These results show that the present model is efficient and accurate in simulating bending cables, which is capable of extending to more cable studies.

Abstract:<p>Cable-supported structure is a common system widely used in engineering, with the rapid development of the infrastructure and transportation industry, its structural form has become more and more complicated. Multi-segment cable system, which consists of a suspension cable and several lateral supports, such as the cable-damper system, the main cable of a suspension bridge, etc., is one of the important cable support systems. Due to the low structural rigidity and damping, its dynamic problems have always been the focus of engineering. To obtain a more general conclusion, a unified dynamic model considering the effect of cable sag, additional cable force, flexural stiffness, and the support stiffness of lateral components are considered in this paper for the first time. However, the exact analysis of this model is difficult, in view of this, the dynamic stiffness method is employed in this paper to investigate the dynamic characteristic of the multi-segment cable system. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing with finite element solutions and experimental results. Results show that the position of lateral supports has a strong coupling effect and influence the lower-order mode more significantly than higher-order modes, and the maximum frequency value can be reached by installing the supports equidistantly.</p>

Robustness Analysis of a Flexible Cable-Strut Tensile Structure

Abstract:Currently, the robustness analysis of structure is primarily related to rigid structures, and little has been done to study the robustness of spatial flexible cable-strut tensile structures with larger span, more complex forms, lower redundancy, more sensitivity to unexpected interference such as construction deviations, etc. Based on the $$ H_{\infty } $$ theory, this paper starts with the fundamental theory and develops analysis method for the robustness of flexible cable-strut tensile structures, and then the relationships between the structural robustness and some design parameters such as initial pre-stress level, load distribution form, structural span, cross-section area, rise-span ratio, etc. are analysed through a case study of a concrete cable-strut tensile structure in China. On this basis, the effects of construction errors such as element-length error and supporting node position error are further analysed. Finally, the importance of each kind of element is analysed by means of conceptual removal of element. The results show that the higher the initial pre-stress level, the larger the element cross-section, the smaller the structural span, the larger the rise-span ratio and the more uniform the load distribution, the stronger the structural robustness. In the limited construction error range, the element-length error and the supporting node position error have little effects on the robustness of the structure. The hoop cables are the more important elements and the elements in inner region of the structure are of comparatively lower importance in the cable dome structure in this study.
The influence of damages on the static behavior of single-layer cable net：finite element analysis and test verification

Abstract:Three-dimensional finite element models are developed by using the general-purpose finite element software ANSYS,to simulate and analyze the static behavior of single-layer plane cable net with different damages,including failure of connectors between horizontal cables and vertical cables,the cable prestress loss,failure of the cable anchor end,and the corresponding tests are carried out to validate the finite element model.The results indicate that this finite element model is able to accurately analyze the influence of the above-mentioned three damages on the static behavior of the single-layer plane cable net,including the structural deformation and the distribution of cable forces.And this finite element model can also accurately take into account the effect of the location and extent of each damage,correctly reflect the situation of the structural damages.Hence it can be applied for further finite element parametric analysis on the single-layer plane cable net with different damage characteristics and structural characteristics,based on which the reliable structural safety analysis model and method can be established.
