Abstract:In this paper, the full compressible Navier‐Stokes equations with Cattaneo's heat transfer law or revised Maxwell's law are considered. We present a loss of initial smoothness of smooth solutions within a finite time and give an upper bound of such time. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions. Moreover, the blow‐up result has no restriction about the specific heat ratio. The main approach is motivated by previous studies and constructing a differential inequality.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the lifespan and the blowup mechanism for smooth solutions to the 2-D nonlinear wave equation $\p_t^2u-\ds\sum_{i=1}^2\p_i(c_i^2(u)\p_iu)$ $=0$, where $c_i(u)\in C^{\infty}(\Bbb R^n)$, $c_i(0)\neq 0$, and $(c_1'(0))^2+(c_2'(0))^2\neq 0$. This equation has an interesting physics background as it arises from the pressure-gradient model in compressible fluid dynamics and also in nonlinear variational wave equations. Under the initial condition $(u(0,x), \p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$ with $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$, and $\ve>0$ is small, we will show that the classical solution $u(t,x)$ stops to be smooth at some finite time $T_{\ve}$. Moreover, blowup occurs due to the formation of a singularity of the first-order derivatives $\na_{t,x}u(t,x)$, while $u(t,x)$ itself is continuous up to the blowup time $T_{\ve}$.

Abstract:We study the phenomenon of finite time blow-up in solutions of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the parabolic equation ut=div(a(x,t)|∇u|p(x)−2∇u)+b(x,t)|u|σ(x,t)−2u with variable exponents of nonlinearity p(x),σ(x,t)∈(1,∞). Two different cases are studied. In the case of semilinear equation with p(x)≡2, a(x,t)≡1, b(x,t)≥b−>0 we show that the finite time blow-up happens if the initial function is sufficiently large and either minΩσ(x,t)=σ−(t)>2 for all t>0, or σ−(t)≥2, σ−(t)↘2 as t→∞ and ∫1∞es(2−σ−(s))ds<∞. In the case of the evolution p(x)-Laplace equation with the exponents p(x), σ(x) independent of t, we prove that every solution corresponding to a sufficiently large initial function exhibits a finite time blow-up if b(x,t)≥b−>0, at(x,t)≤0, bt(x,t)≥0, minσ(x)>2 and maxp(x)≤minσ(x).

Abstract:This paper investigates the qualitative properties of solutions to certain quasilinear parabolic equations. Under appropriate conditions, we obtain that the solution either exists globally or blows up in finite time by making use of the energy method and subsolution techniques. We find out that the behavior of solution heavily depends on the sign and the growth rate of the nonlinear reaction term and the nonlinear flux through boundary at infinity.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to the problem \[\left\{ \begin{array}{rlll} u_t-\Delta u&=a u-b(x)u^p &\mbox{in} &(0,\infty)\times \Omega,\\ \alpha u_\nu+\beta u&=0 & \mbox{on}& (0,\infty)\times \partial \Omega,\\ u(0,.)&=u_0&\mbox{in}& \Omega, \end{array}\right. \] where $p>1$, $b(x)\geq 0$ is continuous and vanishes on the closure of a nontrivial subdomain $\Omega_0$ of $\Omega\subset R^N$. This case can be regarded as a mixture of the well-understood logistic (when b(x) > 0 always) and Malthusian (when $b(x)\equiv 0$) models and has attracted much study in recent years. It follows from recent studies that the model behaves like the logistic model if the growth rate a of the species is less than some constant a0 > 0 and it behaves differently from the logistic model once $a\geq a_0$. In this paper, we show that, when $a\geq a_0$, the model behaves like the Malthusian model on part of the domain (i.e., on $\Omega_0$ where b vanishes) and it behaves like the logistic model on the remaining part of the domain. Our study shows that the boundary blow-up problem \[ -\Delta u=au-b(x)u^p \mbox{ in} \ \Omega\setminus\overline{\Omega}_0,\ \alpha u_\nu +\beta u=0 \mbox{ on}\\partial \Omega,\ \ u=\infty \mbox{ on}\ \partial \Omega_0 \] plays a key role in understanding the dynamics of our model and that the whole theory can be described by a nice bifurcation picture involving a branch of positive solutions at "infinity."

Abstract:We are concerned with a class of two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations $\p_t^2u-\div(c^2(u)\na u)=0$ or $\p_t^2u-c(u)\div(c(u)\na u)=0$ with small initial data $(u(0,x),\p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $c(u)$ is a smooth function, $c(0)\not =0$, $x\in\Bbb R^2$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$ depend only on $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+x_2^2}$, and $\ve>0$ is sufficiently small. Such equations arise in a pressure-gradient model of fluid dynamics, also in a liquid crystal model or other variational wave equations. When $c'(0)\not= 0$ or $c'(0)=0$, $c"(0)\not= 0$, we establish blowup and determine the lifespan of smooth solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we study the smooth solutions of the hydrostatic Euler equations. By a careful construction we establish an analytical lemma; in this lemma, we find the explicit formula in a specific class of functions that maximizes the integral. Basing on a classical invariant transformation we simplify the problem. As a result, for a more general class of initial data we obtain the finite time blowup of the smooth solutions of the hydrostatic Euler equations in a strip domain by this lemma and repeatedly apply the method of characteristics.

Abstract: For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the blowup mechanism can be well understood (i.e., only the blowup of $\partial_{t,x}u$ happens). In the present paper, for the $n\times n$ ($n\geq 3$) strictly hyperbolic system with a class of large initial data, we are concerned with the blowup mechanism of smooth solution $u$ on the finite blowup time and the detailed singularity behaviours of $\partial_{t,x}u$ near the blowup point. Our results are based on the efficient decomposition of $u$ along the different characteristic directions, the suitable introduction of the modulated coordinates and the global weighted energy estimates.

Abstract:The proposal of this paper is to study the local existence of analytic solutions, and blowup of solutions in a finite time for the geophysical boundary layer problem. In contrast with the classical Prandtl boundary layer equation, the geophysical boundary layer equation has an additional integral term arising from the Coriolis force. Under the assumption that the initial velocity and outer flow velocity are analytic in the horizontal variable, we obtain the local well-posedness of the geophysical boundary layer problem by using energy method in the weighted Chemin-Lerner spaces. Moreover, when the initial velocity and outer flow velocity satisfy certain condition on a transversal plane, for any smooth solution decaying exponentially in the normal variable to the geophysical boundary layer problem, it is proved that its $$W^{1,\infty }-$$norm blows up in a finite time. Comparing with the blowup result obtained in Kukavica et al. (Adv Math 307:288–311, 2017) for the classical Prandtl equation, we find that the integral term in the geophysical boundary layer equation triggers the formulation of singularities earlier.
Blow-up for the incompressible 3D-Euler equations with uniform $C^{1,\frac{1}{2}-ε}\cap L^2$ force

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to establish a blow-up mechanism for the forced 3D incompressible Euler equations, with a specific focus on non-axisymmetric solutions. We construct solutions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ within the function space $C^{3,\frac12}\cap L^2$ for the time interval $[0, T)$, where $T > 0$ is finite, subject to a uniform force in $C^{1,\frac12 -\epsilon}\cap L^2$. Remarkably, our methodology results in a blow-up: as the time $t$ approaches the blow-up moment $T$, the integral $\int_0^t |\nabla u| ds$ tends to infinity, all while preserving the solution's smoothness throughout, except at the origin. In the process of our blow-up construction, self-similar coordinates are not utilized and we are able to treat solutions beyond the $C^{1,\frac13+}$ threshold regularity of axy-symmetric solutions without swirl.

The blow-up dynamics for the divergence Schrödinger equations with inhomogeneous nonlinearity

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the blow-up solution for the divergence Schrödinger equations with inhomogeneous nonlinearity (dINLS for short) \[i\partial_tu+\nabla\cdot(|x|^b\nabla u)=-|x|^c|u|^pu,\quad\quad u(x,0)=u_0(x),\] where $2-n<b<2$, $c>b-2$, and $np-2c<(2-b)(p+2)$. First, for radial blow-up solutions in $W_b^{1,2}$, we prove an upper bound on the blow-up rate for the intercritical dNLS. Moreover, an $L^2$-norm concentration in the mass-critical case is also obtained by giving a compact lemma. Next, we turn to the non-radial case. By establishing two types of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, we show the existence of finite time blow-up solutions in $\dot{H}^{s_c}\cap \dot{W}^{1,2}_b$, where $\dot{H}^{s_c}=(-\Delta)^{-\frac{s_c}{2}}L^2$, and $\dot{W}_b^{1,2}=|x|^{-\frac{b}{2}}(-\Delta)^{-\frac{1}{2}}L^2$. As an application, we obtain a lower bound for this blow-up rate, generalizing the work of Merle and Raphaël [Amer. J. Math. 130(4) (2008), pp. 945-978] for the classical NLS equations to the dINLS setting.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the small smooth data problem for the 3-D nonlinear wave equation $\partial_t^2u-\left (1+u+\p_t u\right)\Delta u=0$. This equation is prototypical of the more general equation $\dsize\sum_{i,j=0}^3g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$, where $x_0=t$ and $g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)=c_{ij}+d_{ij}u+\dsize\sum_{k=0}^3e_{ij}^k\partial_ku+O(|u|^2+|\nabla u|^2)$ are smooth functions of their arguments, with $c_{ij}, d_{ij}$ and $e_{ij}^k$ being constants, and $d_{ij}\neq0$ for some $(i,j)$; moreover, $\dsize\sum_{i,j,k=0}^3e_{ij}^k(\partial_ku)\p_{ij} u$ does not fulfill the null condition. For the 3-D nonlinear wave equations $\partial_t^2u-\left (1+u\right)\Delta u=0$ and $\partial_t^2u-\left (1+\partial_t u\right)\Delta u=0$, H. Lindblad, S. Alinhac, and F. John proved and disproved, respectively, the global existence of small smooth data solutions. For radial initial data, we show that the small smooth data solution of $\partial_t^2u-\left(1+u+\partial_t u\right)\Delta u=0$ blows up in finite time. The explicit expression of the asymptotic lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}$ as $\varepsilon\to0^+$ is also given.
