Abstract:In this expository article, we present a systematic formal derivation of the Kubo formula for the linear-response current due to a time-harmonic electric field applied to non-interacting, spinless charged particles in a finite volume in the quantum setting. We model dissipation in a transparent way by assuming a sequence of scattering events occurring at random-time intervals modeled by a Poisson distribution. By taking the large-volume limit, we derive special cases of the formula for free electrons, continuum and tight-binding periodic systems, and the nearest-neighbor tight-binding model of graphene. We present the analogous formalism with dissipation to derive the Drude conductivity of classical free particles.

Strong-coupling limits induced by weak-coupling expansions

Abstract:A method is described for the extrapolation of perturbative expansions in powers of asymptotically small coupling parameters or other variables onto the region of finite variables and even to the variables tending to infinity. The method involves the combination of ideas from renormalization group theory, approximation theory, dynamical theory, and optimal control theory. The extrapolation is realized by means of self-similar factor approximants, whose control parameters can be uniquely defined. The method allows to find the large-variable behavior of sought functions knowing only their small-variable expansions. Convergence and accuracy of the method are illustrated by explicit examples, including the so-called zero-dimensional field theory and anharmonic oscillator. Strong-coupling behavior of Gell-Mann-Low functions in multicomponent field theory, quantum electrodynamics, and quantum chromodynamics is found, being based on their weak-coupling perturbative expansions.

Abstract:Using conformal field theory calculations of the energy spectrum, within the XXZ model we investigate effects of the flux insertion and the Umklapp term. We discuss two approaches to the evaluation of the Drude weight, the first corresponding to the linear response theory and the second corresponding to the twisted boson theory with the Umklapp term. Divergences obtained in the context of the former contradict the Bethe ansatz results, with the two approaches coinciding for the free fermion point only. The origin of this discrepancy is in the different order in which the Umklapp term and the flux insertion are treated, where the marginal perturbation should be considered before the irrelevant perturbation. Weak localization and crossover from Lifshitz transition in two dimensions

Abstract:Dirac point plays a crucial role in regulating electronic properties of topological semimetals. In two dimensions, the manipulation of Dirac points can spur a transition from Dirac semimetal through semi-Dirac phase to a gapped phase. Across such a so-called Lifshitz transition, we find that the quantum interference corrections to the conductivity δσxx and δσyy are always negative, giving rise to a weak localization behavior. The ratio δσxx/δσyy undergoes a transition from linear to parabolic dependence on the merging parameter across the Lifshitz transition, which leads to a crossover of the temperature dependence of the inverse inelastic scattering time 1/τɛ from ∼T to ∼Tln(T0/T). This fingerprint behavior can be readily tested experimentally through merging Dirac points in two-dimensional lattices. This work presents an alternative perspective to understand weak localization through Lifshitz transition.

Abstract:We derive the general Kubo formula in a form that solely utilizes the time evolution of displacement operators. The derivation is based on the decomposition of the linear response function into its time-symmetric and time-antisymmetric parts. We relate this form to the well-known fluctuation-dissipation formula and discuss theoretical and numerical aspects of it. The approach is illustrated with an analytical example for magnetic resonance as well as a numerical example where we analyze the electrical conductivity tensor and the Chern insulating state of the disordered Haldane model. We introduce a highly efficient time-domain approach that describes the quantum dynamics of the resistivity of this model with an at least 1000-fold better performance in comparison to existing time-evolution schemes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.016601 © 2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:We applied the method of finite-part integration [Galapon E.A Proc.R.Soc A 473, 20160567(2017)] to evaluate in closed-form the exact one-loop integral representations of the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian from QED for a constant electric field and electric-like self-dual background. We also devise a prescription based on the finite-part integration of the Cauchy principal value integral to sum and extrapolate the non-alternating divergent weak-field expansions of the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangians to recover the non-perturbative Schwinger effect well into the strong field limit.

Non-Hermitian Linear Response Theory

Abstract:Linear response theory lies at the heart of quantum many-body physics because it builds up connections between the dynamical response to an external probe and correlation functions at equilibrium. Here we consider the dynamical response of a Hermitian system to a non-Hermitian probe, and we develop a non-Hermitian linear response theory that can also relate this dynamical response to equilibrium properties. As an application of our theory, we consider the real-time dynamics of momentum distribution induced by one-body and two-body dissipations. We find that, for many cases, the dynamics of momentum occupation and the width of momentum distribution obey the same universal function, governed by the single-particle spectral function. We also find that, for critical state with no well-defined quasi-particles, the dynamics are slower than normal state and our theory provides a model independent way to extract the critical exponent. We apply our results to analyze recent experiment on the Bose-Hubbard model and find surprising good agreement between theory and experiment. We also propose to further verify our theory by carrying out a similar experiment on a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid.

Quantum origin of Ohm's reciprocity relation and its violation: conductivity as inverse resistivity

Abstract:Conventional wisdom teaches us that the electrical conductivity in a material is the inverse of its resistivity. In this work, we show that when both of these transport coefficients are defined in linear response through the Kubo formulae as two-point correlators of quantum fields, this Ohm's reciprocity relation is generically violated in theories with dynamical electromagnetism. We also elucidate how in special limits (e.g., in the DC limit in the presence of thermal effects, in certain 2+1$d$ conformal theories, and in holographic supersymmetric theories) the reciprocity is again reinstated, and show that if the response of a material is measured with respect to the total electric field that includes quantum corrections, then the reciprocity relation is satisfied by definition. However, in that case, the transport coefficients are given by the photon vacuum polarisation and not the correlators of conserved currents that dominate macroscopic late-time transport.

Abstract:Accurate calculations of macroscopic and mesoscopic properties in quantum electrodynamics require careful treatment of infrared divergences: standard treatments introduce spurious large-distances effects. A method for computing these properties was developed in a companion paper. That method depends upon a result obtained here about the nature of the singularities that produce the dominant large-distance behaviour. If all particles in a quantum field theory have non-zero mass then the Landau-Nakanishi diagrams give strong conditions on the singularities of the scattering functions. These conditions are severely weakened in quantum electrodynamics by effects of points where photon momenta vanish. A new kind of Landau-Nakanishi diagram is developed here. It is geared specifically to the pole-decomposition functions that dominate the macroscopic behaviour in quantum electrodynamics, and leads to strong results for these functions at points where photon momenta vanish.
Longitudinal DC Conductivity in Dirac Nodal Line Semimetals: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Contributions

Abstract:Nodal line semimetals, a class of topological quantum materials, exhibit a variety of novel phenomena due to their properties, such as bands touching on a one-dimensional line or a ring in the Brillouin zone and drumhead-like surface states. In addition, these semimetals are protected by the combined space-inversion and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. In this study, we investigate the longitudinal DC conductivity of the Dirac nodal line semimetals for the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system by the mass term. Here, using the quantum kinetic technique, we find the intrinsic (field-driven) and extrinsic (scattering-driven) contributions to the total DC conductivity due to interband effects. Interestingly, the resulting intrinsic conductivity is the Fermi sea contribution, while the extrinsic stems from the Fermi surface contribution. We show that at low chemical potential, the extrinsic part contributes more and dominates over the traditional Drude intraband term, while at the high chemical potential, the intrinsic conductivity contributes. Furthermore, the total DC response due to interband effects saturates at high chemical potential and its strength decreases with increasing mass value. Our findings suggest that the extrinsic contributions are rich enough to understand the overall feature of the response for the three-dimensional system.

Non linear transport theory for negative-differential resistance states of two dimensional electron systems in strong magnetic fields

Abstract:We present a model to describe the nonlinear response to a direct dc current applied to a two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field. The model is based on the solution of the von Neumann equation incorporating the exact dynamics of two-dimensional damped electrons in the presence of arbitrarily strong magnetic and dc electric fields, while the effects of randomly distributed impurities are perturbatively added. From the analysis of the differential resistivity and the longitudinal voltage we observe the formation of negative differential resistivity states (NDRS) that are the precursors of the zero differential resistivity states (ZDRS). The theoretical predictions correctly reproduce the main experimental features provided that the inelastic scattering rate obey a $T^2$ temperature dependence, consistent with electron-electron interaction effects.

Abstract:Taking into account thermal fluctuations, we solve numerically the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations to study the role of twin boundaries on the transverse resistivity as well as Hall effect for a d-wave superconductor. In the presence of an external current parallel to the twin boundary, we observe that the twin boundary (TB) not only behaves as a pinning center, but also induces a negative component of transverse resistivity. A sign reversal may occur for the transverse resistivity and Hall signal, changing from negative to positive as the magnetic field increases. The increase of the strength of the TB can enhance the negative transverse resistivity, but will soon saturate at higher twin-boundary strengths. Only the antisymmetric part of the transverse resistivity is significantly affected by the normal-state off-diagonal conductivity, while the symmetric part may reflect a key role of the TB on the anisotropy.

Abstract:The frequency-dependent exchange-correlation potential, which appears in the usual Kohn-Sham formulation of a time-dependent linear response problem, is a strongly nonlocal functional of the density, so that a consistent local density approximation generally does not exist. This problem can be avoided by choosing the current-density as the basic variable in a generalized Kohn-Sham theory. This theory admits a local approximation which, for fixed frequency, is exact in the limit of slowly varying densities and perturbing potentials.

Large Scale Response of Gapless $1d$ and Quasi-$1d$ Systems

Abstract:We consider the transport properties of non-interacting, gapless one-dimensional quantum systems and of the edge modes of two-dimensional topological insulators, in the presence of time-dependent perturbations. We prove the validity of Kubo formula, in the zero temperature and infinite volume limit, for a class of perturbations that are weak and slowly varying in space and in time, in an Euler-like scaling. The proof relies on the representation of the real time Duhamel series in imaginary time, which allows to prove its convergence uniformly in the scaling parameter and in the size of system, at low temperatures. Furthermore, it allows to exploit a suitable cancellation for the scaling limit of the model, related to the emergent anomalous chiral gauge symmetry of relativistic one-dimensional fermions. The cancellation implies that, as the temperature and the scaling parameter are sent to zero, the linear response is the only contribution to the full response of the system. The explicit form of the leading contribution to the response function is determined by lattice conservation laws. In particular, the method allows to prove the quantization of the edge conductance of $2d$ quantum Hall systems from quantum dynamics.

Discrete-to-Continuum Limits of Long-Range Electrical Interactions in Nanostructures

Abstract:We consider electrostatic interactions in two classes of nanostructures embedded in a three dimensional space: (1) helical nanotubes, and (2) thin films with uniform bending (i.e., constant mean curvature). Starting from the atomic scale with a discrete distribution of dipoles, we obtain the continuum limit of the electrostatic energy; the continuum energy depends on the geometric parameters that define the nanostructure, such as the pitch and twist of the helical nanotubes and the curvature of the thin film. We find that the limiting energy is local in nature. This can be rationalized by noticing that the decay of the dipole kernel is sufficiently fast when the lattice sums run over one and two dimensions, and is also consistent with prior work on dimension reduction of continuum micromagnetic bodies to the thin film limit. However, an interesting contrast between the discrete-to-continuum approach and the continuum dimension reduction approaches is that the limit energy in the latter depends only on the normal component of the dipole field, whereas in the discrete-to-continuum approach, both tangential and normal components of the dipole field contribute to the limit energy.

Unexpected linear conductivity in Landau-Zener model: limitations and improvements of the relaxation time approximation in the quantum master equation

Abstract:The nonequilibrium steady states of quantum materials have many challenges. Here, we highlight issues with the relaxation time approximation (RTA) for the DC conductivity in insulating systems. The RTA to the quantum master equation (QME) is frequently employed as a simple method, yet this phenomenological approach is exposed as a fatal approximation, displaying metallic DC conductivity in insulating systems within the linear response regime. We find that the unexpected metallic behavior is caused by the fact that the density matrix in the RTA incompletely incorporates the first order of the external field. To solve this problem, we have derived a new calculation scheme based on the QME that ensure correct behavior in low electric fields. Our method reproduces well the overall features of the exact electric currents in the whole field region. It is not time-consuming, and its application to lattice systems is straightforward. This method will encourage progress in this research area as a simple way to more accurately describe nonequilibrium steady states.

Dynamics of electric transport in interacting Weyl semimetals

Abstract:The response to an electric field (DC and AC) of electronic systems in which the Fermi "surface" consists of a number of 3D Weyl points (such as some pyrochlore iridates) exhibits a peculiar combination of characteristics usually associated with insulating and conducting behaviour. Generically a neutral plasma in clean materials can be described by a tight binding model with a strong spin-orbit interaction. A system of that type has a vanishing DC conductivity; however the current response to the DC field is very slow: the current decays with time in a powerwise manner, different from an insulator. The AC conductivity, in addition to a finite real part which is linear in frequency, exhibits an imaginary part that increases logarithmically as function of the UV cutoff (atomic scale). This leads to substantial dielectric response like a large dielectric constant at low frequencies. This is in contrast to a 2D Weyl semimetal like graphene at neutrality point where the AC conductivity is purely pseudo-dissipative. The Coulomb interaction between electrons is long range and sufficiently strong to make a significant impact on transport. The interaction contribution to the AC conductivity is calculated within the tight binding model.
