Lots and Lots of Perrin-Type Primality Tests and Their Pseudo-Primes

Abstract:We use Experimental Mathematics and Symbolic Computation (with Maple), to search for lots and lots of Perrin- and Lucas- style primality tests, and try to sort the wheat from the chaff. More impressively, we find quite a few such primality tests for which we can explicitly construct infinite families of pseudo-primes, rather, like in the cases of Perrin pseudo-primes and the famous Carmichael primes, only proving the mere existence of infinitely many of them.

Abstract:Permutation polynomials over finite fields constitute an active research area and have applications in many areas of science and engineering. In this paper, four classes of monomial complete permutation polynomials and one class of trinomial complete permutation polynomials are presented, one of which confirms a conjecture proposed by Wu et al. (Sci China Math 58:2081–2094, 2015 ). Furthermore, we give two classes of permutation trinomial, and make some progress on a conjecture about the differential uniformity of power permutation polynomials proposed by Blondeau et al. (Int J Inf Coding Theory 1:149–170, 2010 ).

Abstract:The structure of the group (ℤ/nℤ)* and Fermat’s little theorem are the basis for some of the best-known primality testing algorithms. Many related concepts arise: Euler’s totient function and Carmichael’s lambda function, Fermat pseudoprimes, Carmichael and cyclic numbers, Lehmer’s totient problem, Giuga’s conjecture, etc. In this paper, we present and study analogues to some of the previous concepts arising when we consider the underlying group Gn:= {a + bi ∈ ℤ[i]/nℤ[i]: a2 + b2 ≡ 1 (mod n)}. In particular, we characterize Gaussian Carmichael numbers via a Korselt’s criterion and present their relation with Gaussian cyclic numbers. Finally, we present the relation between Gaussian Carmichael number and 1-Williams numbers for numbers n ≡ 3 (mod 4). There are also no known composite numbers less than 1018 in this family that are both pseudoprime to base 1 + 2i and 2-pseudoprime.

Abstract:We give a new sufficient condition which allows to test primality of Fermat's numbers. This characterization uses uniquely values at most equal to tested Fermat number. The robustness of this result is due to a strict use of elementary arithmetic technical tools and it will be susceptible to open gates for revolutionary statement that all Fermat's numbers are all decomposable.

Abstract:Although a deterministic polytime algorithm for primality testing is now known, the Rabin-Miller randomized test of primality continues being the most efficient and widely used algorithm. We prove the correctness of the Rabin-Miller algorithm in the theory V1 for polynomial time reasoning, from Fermat's little theorem. This is interesting because the Rabin-Miller algorithm is a polytime randomized algorithm, which runs in the class RP (i.e., the class of polytime Monte-Carlo algorithms), with a sampling space exponential in the length of the binary encoding of the input number. (The class RP contains polytime P.) However, we show how to express the correctness in the language of V1, and we also show that we can prove the formula expressing correctness with polytime reasoning from Fermat's Little theorem, which is generally expected to be independent of V1. Our proof is also conceptually very basic in the sense that we use the extended Euclid's algorithm, for computing greatest common divisors, as the main workhorse of the proof. For example, we make do without proving the Chinese Reminder theorem, which is used in the standard proofs.

Abstract:In this expository paper we describe four primality tests. The first test is very efficient, but is only capable of proving that a given number is either composite or 'very probably' prime. The second test is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to prove that a given numer is either prime or composite. The third and fourth primality tests are at present most widely used in practice. Both tests are capable of proving that a given number is prime or composite, but neither algorithm is deterministic. The third algorithm exploits the arithmetic of cyclotomic fields. Its running time is almost, but not quite polynomial time. The fourth algorithm exploits elliptic curves. Its running time is difficult to estimate, but it behaves well in practice.

Abstract:Monier and Rabin proved that an odd composite can pass the Strong Probable Prime Test for at most $\frac 14$ of the possible bases. In this paper, a probable prime test is developed using quadratic polynomials and the Frobenius automorphism. The test, along with a fixed number of trial divisions, ensures that a composite $n$ will pass for less than $\frac 1{7710}$ of the polynomials $x^2-bx-c$ with $\left(b^2+4c\over n\right)=-1$ and $\left(-c\over n\right)=1$. The running time of the test is asymptotically $3$ times that of the Strong Probable Prime Test.

Abstract:We recall Charles Babbage's 1819 criterion for primality, based on simultaneous congruences for binomial coefficients, and extend it to a least-prime-factor test. We also prove a partial converse of his non-primality test, based on a single congruence. Two problems are posed. Along the way we encounter Bachet, Bernoulli, Bezout, Euler, Fermat, Kummer, Lagrange, Lucas, Vandermonde, Waring, Wilson, Wolstenholme, and several contemporary mathematicians.

Abstract:Primality testing is an especially useful topic for public-key cryptography. In this paper, a novel primality test algorithm based on the Pell's cubic will be introduced, and its necessary primality conditions will be proved using three integer sequences connected to operations applied in the projectivization of the Pell's cubic. The number of operations involved in the test grows linearly with respect to the bit-length $\log_2(n)$ of the input integer $n$. The algorithm is deterministic for integers less than $2^{32}$.

Abstract:In 1876, Edouard Lucas showed that if an integer $b$ exists such that $b^{n-1} \equiv 1 (\mathrm{mod} \ n)$ and $b^{(n-1)/p} \not\equiv 1( \mathrm{mod} \ n)$ for all prime divisors $p$ of $n-1$ , then $n$ is prime, a result known as Lucas's converse of Fermat's little theorem. This result was considerably improved by Henry Pocklington in 1914 when he showed that it's not necessary to know all the prime factors of $n-1$ in order to determine if $n$ is prime. In this paper we optimize Pocklington's primality test for integers of the form $ap^{k}+1$ where $p$ is prime, $a<p$, $k\ge 1$. An extension of Lucas's converse of Fermat's little theorem is given. We also prove a new general-purpose primality test that requires that only a single odd prime divisor of $n-1$ be found for the test to be implemented. Contrary to the well-known result: There are infinitely many Fermat pseudoprimes to any base $b$; In this paper we prove the finitude of Fermat pseudoprimes in some forms of integers.

Abstract:A heuristic algorithm for testing absolute irreducibility of multivariate polynomials over arbitrary fields using Newton polytopes was proposed in Gao and Lauder (Discrete Comput. Geom. 26:89–104, [ 2001 ]). A preliminary implementation by Gao and Lauder (2003) established a wide range of families of low degree and sparse polynomials for which the algorithm works efficiently and with a high success rate. In this paper, we develop a BSP variant of the absolute irreducibility testing via polytopes, with the aim of producing a more memory and run-time efficient method that can provide wider ranges of applicability, specifically in terms of the degrees of the input polynomials. In the bivariate case, we describe a balanced load scheme and a corresponding data distribution leading to a parallel algorithm whose efficiency can be established under reasonably realistic conditions. This is later incorporated in a doubly parallel algorithm in the multivariate case that achieves similar scalable performance. Both parallel models are analyzed for efficiency, and the theoretical analysis is compared to the performance of our experiments. In the empirical results we report, we achieve absolute irreducibility testing for bivariate and trivariate polynomials of degrees up to 30,000, and for low degree multivariate polynomials with more than 3,000 variables. To the best of our knowledge, this sets a world record in establishing absolute irreducibility of multivariate polynomials.

Reducing Randomness Via Irrational Numbers

Abstract:We propose a general methodology for testing whether a given polynomial with integer coefficients is identically zero. The methodology evaluates the polynomial at efficiently computable approximations of suitable irrational points. In contrast to the classical technique of DeMillo, Lipton, Schwartz, and Zippel, this methodology can decrease the error probability by increasing the precision of the approximations instead of using more random bits. Consequently, randomized algorithms that use the classical technique can generally be improved using the new methodology. To demonstrate the methodology, we discuss two nontrivial applications. The first is to decide whether a graph has a perfect matching in parallel. Our new NC algorithm uses fewer random bits while doing less work than the previously best NC algorithm by Chari, Rohatgi, and Srinivasan. The second application is to test the equality of two multisets of integers. Our new algorithm improves upon the previously best algorithms by Blum and Kannan and can speed up their checking algorithm for sorting programs on a large range of inputs.
On the Infinitude of Some Special Kinds of Primes

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to try to establish a generic model for the problem that several multivariable number-theoretic functions represent simultaneously primes for infinitely many integral points. More concretely, we introduced briefly the research background-the history and current situation-from Euclid's second theorem to Green-Tao theorem. We analyzed some equivalent necessary conditions that irreducible univariable polynomials with integral coefficients represent infinitely many primes, found new necessary conditions which perhaps imply that there are only finitely many Fermat primes, obtained an analogy of the Chinese Remainder Theorem, generalized Euler's function, the prime-counting function and Schinzel-Sierpinski's Conjecture and so on. Nevertheless, this is only a beginning and it miles to go. We hope that number theorists consider further it.

Abstract:Abstract We study how often exceptional configurations of irreducible polynomials over finite fields occur in the context of prime number races and Chebyshev's bias. In particular, we show that three types of biases, which we call “complete bias,” “lower order bias,” and “reversed bias,” occur with probability going to zero among the family of all squarefree monic polynomials of a given degree in as , a power of a fixed prime, goes to infinity. The bounds given extend a previous result of Kowalski, who studied a similar question along particular one‐parameter families of reducible polynomials. The tools used are the large sieve for Frobenius developed by Kowalski, an improvement of it due to Perret–Gentil and considerations from the theory of linear recurrence sequences and arithmetic geometry.

Abstract:Let F-q be the finite field of order q and f (x) be an irreducible polynomial of degree n over F-q. For a positive divisor n(1) of n, define the n(1)-traces of f (x) to be Tr(alpha; n(1)) = alpha+alpha(q) +...+alpha(qn1-1) where alpha's are the roots of f (x). Let N-q*(n; n(1)) denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials of degree n over F-q with nozero n(1)-traces. Ruskey, Miers and Sawada have found the formula for N-q*(n; n). Based on the properties of linearized polynomials, we obtain the formula for N-q*(n; n(1)) in the general case, including a new proof to the result by Ruskey, Miers and Sawada.
