Abstract:Index tracking is a very popular passive investment strategy. Since an index cannot be traded directly, index tracking refers to the process of creating a portfolio that approximates its performance. A straightforward way to do that is to purchase all the assets that compose an index in appropriate quantities. However, to simplify the execution, avoid small and illiquid positions, and large transaction costs, it is desired that the tracking portfolio consists of a small number of assets, i.e., we wish to create a sparse portfolio. Although index tracking is driven from the financial industry, it is in fact a pure signal processing problem: a regression of the financial historical data subject to some portfolio constraints with some caveats and particularities. Furthermore, the sparse index tracking problem is similar to many sparsity formulations in the signal processing area in the sense that it is a regression problem with some sparsity requirements. In its original form, sparse index tracking can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem. A commonly used approach is to use mixed-integer programming (MIP) to solve small sized problems. Nevertheless, MIP solvers are not applicable for high-dimensional problems since the running time can be prohibiting for practical use. The goal of this monograph is to provide an in-depth overview of the index tracking problem and analyze all the caveats and practical issues an investor might have, such as the frequent rebalancing of weights, the changes in the index composition, the transaction costs, etc. Furthermore, a unified framework for a large variety of sparse index tracking formulations is provided. The derived algorithms are very attractive for practical use since they provide efficient tracking portfolios orders of magnitude faster than MIP solvers.

Abstract:The passive management approach offers conservative investors a way to reduce risk concerning the market. This investment strategy aims at replicating a specific index, such as the NASDAQ Composite or the FTSE100 index. The problem is that buying all the index's assets incurs high rebalancing costs, and this harms future returns. The index tracking problem concerns building a portfolio that follows a specific benchmark with fewer transaction costs. Since a subset of assets is required to solve the index problem this class of problems is NP-hard, and in the past years, researchers have been studying solution approaches to obtain tracking portfolios more practically. This work brings an analysis, spanning the last decade, of the advances in mathematical approaches for index tracking. The systematic literature review covered important issues, such as the most relevant research areas, solution methods, and model structures. Special attention was given to the exploration and analysis of metaheuristics applied to the index tracking problem.

Abstract:Index investing is a passive strategy in the sense that the objective tracks an index as closely as possible.The indexing portfolio is constructed based on the historical prices movement of index and its component stocks with a series of quantitative methods.This paper reviews the development of overseas indexing portfolio and the research on tracking error and replication strategy.Based on the review,we find that the choice of a risk measure relative to the index,the combination of active and passive strategies as well as the dynamic rebalancing strategy are the main trend of index investing research.Suggestions on indexing investment in China are also discussed in the end.

Abstract:Index tracking is a popular passive investment strategy widely used by index funds and institutional investors.In this paper,we present a cardinality constrained index tracking model based on factor model.The model minimizes the variance of the portfolio with constraints on factor betas and expectes excess return.Taking into account the practical investment management,we also consider restrictions on the total number of stocks selected.The result of empirical analysis suggests that,by choosing different parameters,the optimal portfolios of our model can achieve low tracking error and excess return.
Empirical Study of the Replication Approaches of Index Tracking Portfolio

Abstract:The choice of index tracking portfolio replication approaches is important to index fund management. According to the point of systematic risk control, the optimal tracking portfolio was constructed. A comparison was made among index funds constructed by stratified sampling replication, full one and optimized one. The empirical results showed that the tracking precision of full replication approach is the best, the optimized replication approach is worst, the return and the accumulative return of optimized replication approach is the highest, and the full replication approach is the least. Regardless of the approaches of replication, the tracking error from the measurement approach of linear tracking error is least in the three measurement ones.

Abstract:With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, target tracking is a hot problem in the field of computer vision, which has a wide range of application prospects in industrial, military, transportation, medical and other fields. In this paper, Citespace software is used to conduct descriptive statistical analysis and knowledge mapping analysis of target tracking based on domestic CNKI database literature, and to explore the development status and frontier trends in the field of target tracking in China. On this basis, point out three shortcomings of current research: low accuracy of target tracking in complex environments, poor real-time target tracking, and few application directions, and give suggestions to improve algorithm robustness, real-time, accelerate engineering implementation, and focus on future research trends.

Abstract:Index tracking is an passive strategy in portfolio management, it mimics the performance of a benchmark index to construct portfolios for obtaining the average return of the target market. Index tracking has become popular in investors because it possesses the advantages of low cost, high liquidity and lower risk. This paper introduced sensitivity analysis to construct a fuzzy multi-objective index tracking portfolio model with value at risk (SA-IT-VAR-FMOPM) when return rate was set as parabolic fuzzy variable, the sensitivity and VaR factors were considered in the model. An improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm was used to search optimal solution for multi-objective problem. To verify the effective of the proposed model, Dow 30 index data were selected to the empirical experiment, the results show the fuzzy multi-objective index tracking portfolio model which considered the sensitivity and VaR factors can obtain more stable portfolio and achieve the average return of target market.

Abstract:There are numerous traditional indexes (such as hindex and g-index) to quantify an individual's scientific research output.However,most of them cannot characterize the scientific output of researchers in different disciplines reasonably due to the fact that they ignore the gaps between different disciplines.Besides,after statistical analysis,we found that citations are related to the published time and it is unreasonable to measure the articles which are published in different time by citations.As a result,in order to eliminate the impact of disciplines and published time,we build a statistical model to correct the h-index as well as g-index and put forward a new index:REL-index,as the supplement and development of h-index and g-index.

Abstract:The optimal portfolio for tracking the financial index with return constraints is constructed. The analytic form of the optimal portfolio is obtained. It can be represented as a convex combination of three funds. So a Three Funds Theorem is thus proved. It is shown that the tracking error is a quadratic function of the return which is a parabola in the error-return plane. Finally, the numerical examples are given for the cases with or without short sell constraints respectively.

Abstract:Using h-index as a reference to study reader's reading tendency,and the data of books in circulation as samples,this paper calculates the h indexes of different sorts of books,and based on the indexes obtained to make a research on the readers' reading tendency. The outcome of the research shows that the application of h- index method is of great use in analyzing and assessing the distributions and values of books of different subjects,thus it can provide a theoretical basis for the optimization of the information collection of libraries.

Abstract:Text retrieval systems require an index to allow efficient retrieval of documents at the cost of some storage overhead. This paper proposes a novel full-text indexing model for Chinese text retrieval based on the concept of adjacency matrix of directed graph. Using this indexing model, on one hand, retrieval systems need to keep only the indexing data, instead of the indexing data and the original text data as the traditional retrieval systems always do. On the other hand, occurrences of index term are identified by labels of the so-called s-strings where the index term appears, rather than by its positions as in traditional indexing models. Consequently, system space cost as a whole can be reduced drastically while retrieval efficiency is maintained satisfactory. Experiments over several real-world Chinese text collections are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of this model. In addition to Chinese, The proposed indexing model is also effective and efficient for text retrieval of other Oriental languages, such as Japanese and Korean. It is especially useful for digital library application areas where storage resource is very limited (e.g., e-books and CD-based text retrieval systems).

Abstract:Because the tracking data have important application value,the track index technology has been widely studied and concerned.Traditional indexing methods have many problems such as node overlap,lack of dynamic partitioning of spatial capabilities and loss of a large number of original information.Therefore,we propose GeoSAX,a track index method for similarity search.In this method,the original tracking was divided into several equal segments,and spatial coding based on Geohash was adopted.We designed an indexing architecture for the whole track after encoding,which was based on HBase storage.Thus,the similarity search was realized.GeoSAX not only does not overlap between nodes,but also dynamically divides the space according to the size of the data,while preserving the track information of the specified precision.Contrast experiments on real shipping and taxi data sets show that GeoSAX has better track search performance than traditional methods.

Abstract:Index tuning plays a crucial role in facilitating the efficiency of data retrieval within database systems, which adjusts index settings to optimize the database performance. Recently, with the growth of data volumes, the complexity of workloads, and the diversification of database applications, various Automatic Index Tuning (AIT) methods have been proposed to address these challenges. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on Automatic Index Tuning. First, we overview the AIT techniques from multiple aspects, including (i) problem definition, (ii) workflow, (iii) framework, (iv) index types, (v) index interaction, (vi) changing factors, (vii) automation level, and show the development history. Second, we summarize techniques in the main modules of AIT, including preprocessing , index benefit estimation , and index selection . Preprocessing involves workload compression, index candidate generation, feature representation of workloads and databases, and workload reduction. Index benefit estimation approaches are categorized into empirical methods and machine learning based methods. Index selection involves algorithms of offline AIT and online AIT. Moreover, we summarize the commonly-used datasets in AIT and discuss the applications of index tuning in commercial and opensource database products. Finally, we outline potential future research directions. Our survey aims to enhance both general knowledge and in-depth insights into AIT, and inspire researchers to address the ongoing challenges.

Abstract:The evaluation for visual tracking is of utmost importance in computer vision. During the last two decades, several evaluation frameworks have been proposed and applied by a large amount of researchers, such as average central error, success rate, or Pascal score. It turns out that it is not easy to compare trackers fairly, precisely, and comprehensively with just only one evaluation index. Given the fact, a novel method for the evaluation of visual tracking algorithms is proposed in this paper, which combines both central error and Pascal score. Using this metric, an experimental validation was conducted finally and may serve as a reference for related research.

Abstract:Progress in information technology and intelligent systems has brought computer vision to the forefront of IT research.Visual tracking is currently one of the most active research topics in computer vision.The state of research in visual tracking algorithms was examined for this paper.The authors reviewed the common visual tracking algorithms and their main mathematical methods.The examination included region-based tracking algorithms,active contour-based tracking algorithms,feature-based tracking algorithms,model-based tracking algorithms,parameter estimate algorithms and non-parameter density estimate algorithms.Significant issues needing further study were then discussed.

Abstract:Considering that investors usually adopt the safety first principle,the lower partial probability of the tracking deviation is taken as the risk measure;to overcome the computational intractability induced by the chance constraint while properly reflecting the fat-tall phenomenon of security return distributions,it is assumed that the joint distribution of stocks' return follows the multivariate t-distribution.The new financial index tracking model is then derived under the above framework.After analyzing the structure property of the established optimization problem,we derive its explicitly optimal solution.Empirical results demonstrate the efficiency and practical value of our new tracking model.
