Abstract:Nowadays, the educational approach has changed its focus from individual knowledge construction to collective knowledge construction. As a method of collective knowledge construction, collaborative learning has become a main learning style in all levels of education, especially in higher education.Interaction is the basic unit of collaborative learning, which can provide insight into the nature of collaborative learning.Interaction analysis is the key in exploring the laws of collaborative learning and grasping the dynamic processes of collaborative learning. It can also diagnose whether learners achieve the learning objectives.Recently, the emphasis of interaction analysis has shifted from the influencing factors to the interaction process. However, previous studies focus on analyzing the macro-aspects such as the interaction pattern, the group member relationship, and the interaction behavior.Furthermore, the analysis dimension is not refined, interaction is still viewed statically and effective analysis methods remain vacant. The nine existing interaction analysis methods focus on coding discourse transcripts into speech acts, which are confronted with many challenges, such as dividing analysis unit, determining a objective and reusable coding scheme, and guaranteeing the reliability and validity of analysis methods. This study considers the collaborative learning as a complex information system and information flows are identified as the analysis focus. From a holistic perspective,an innovative analytic method based on information flows was developed.Focusing on the interaction process, the method is capable of effectively predicting group performance by computing the total activation quantity of the target knowledge map. With high objectivity and strong feasibility, this method is a promising approach for interaction analysis.
