Abstract:Graphite carbon anode is one of commercially available products because of its high charge/discharge capacity and steady cyclic property. As a result, modification of carbonaceous anode materials has been a research focus. The microstructure of the carbon nanoparticles were characterized by means of transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). Also the properties of carbon nanoparticles used as anode of lithium ion battery were discussed. It shows that carbon nanoparticles have high first charge capacity, which is 710mAh/g. But its first ratio of discharge is very low and the irreversible capacity is very high. It has some disadvantage for anode material of lithium ion battery. we must give it some proper modification to make it become a promising anode material for lithium ion battery.

Abstract:An attempt has been made to review and analyze the developments made during last few decades on the place of carbon in batteries. First identified as an anode of interest in the form of graphite, carbon has also made a place for itself as conductive agent added during electrode formulation or also as buffer with electrochemical active oxide processing by conversion. The focus is primarily on how to decrease the irreversibility of classical anode materials then how to increase its whole performance through nanostructures, mainly CNTs and graphene. We have identified post-lithium batteries as an opportunity for carbon as anode but also as support to reversible cathode material. Operando measurements may provide several breakthroughs and allow the rational and real design of carbonaceous materials for high power anodes in all types of batteries.

Research Progress on Fibrous Carbon Materials As Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Fibrous carbon materials have a variety of dimensions and structures. However, these materials were earlier restricted for use as anode materials for lithium ion batteries due to their cost and performance. With the development of nanotechnology, some modified and new forms of carbon fibers have emerged, which show good performance as anode materials. This paper reviews recent domestic and foreign research progress on fibrous carbon materials as anode materials. The electrochemical performance and prospective use of graphite fibers, carbon fibers and carbon nanofibers for this purpose are summarized. Research has ranged from non_graphitized to graphitized carbon fibers, from micron to nanometer diameter, and has focused on the parameters of their prepara_tion to the design of their microstructure. Fibrous carbon materials are likely to be important alternatives for carbon anode materials in the future based on their high capacity, high rate capability, low cost and ease of industrialization.

Abstract:Mild-exfoliated graphite (MEG) with a pyrolysis carbon coating has been prepared by low temperature heating treatment of H2SO4-Graphite Intercalation Compounds, which was synthesized by a chemical oxidation process under H2O2 addition, and then was coated with carbon film. The volume expansion of MEG was limited to less than 50% by controlling the heating temperature and the duration. XRD results showed that the grain size of MEGs decreases with the increase of treating temperature. The sample treated at 360 °C for 24 h with carbon coating could accommodate up to 378 mAh/g capacity and keep 100% capacity after 100 cycles. The cyclic voltammetry measurement indicated that the differences among the capacities of MEGs treated at different conditions were corresponding to the relative strength of the peak at 0.05 V. The porous structure analysis by BET method showed that the increase of micro-pores could make a great contribution to the enhancement of both the cycle stability and the reversible capacity.

Abstract:The nano-porous Si/graphite composite was prepared via two-step ball-milling followed by etching process. Then carbon coating was introduced to obtain nano-porous Si/graphite/C. The microstructure of the nanoporous silicon material was characterized by SEM and TEM. The results from electrochemical test reveal that nanoporous Si/graphite/C composite exhibits much better cycle performance than nanosized Si/graphite/C composite. On the other hand, it is found that influence of composition, carbon precursor, binder type and content on the electrode performance is remarkable. The nano-porous Si/graphite/C composite electrode containing LA132 binder (10wt%) exhibits a reversible capacity of 649.9 mAh (.) g(-1) after 200 cycles, with almost no capacity loss. The superior electrochemical characteristics are attributed to suppression of the volume expansion for lithium insertion via nanosized pores in Si particles, and the volume-buffering action as well as excellent electronic and ionic conductivity of carbon materials.

Abstract:The carbon powders and film electrode with core shell structure were prepared by carbonization in gas state with using refined coal as shell material and Artificial Graphite and Mesocarbon Microbeads (2 800 ℃) graphite as core material. Galvanostatic charge/discharge measurement showed that both steady charge/discharge capacity and first charge/discharge efficiency were improved. Cyclic voltammetry indicated that the peak at about 0.7 V vs. Li +/Li characteristic of decomposition of electrolyte got weakened, and a more compact film was formed. X ray diffraction measurement suggested the existence of amorphous carbon shell on the carbon powders and carbon film.

Abstract:Fe3C@carbonnanocapsules(*)/expanded graphite composite was successfully prepared by a new and facile method, including mix of starting materials and heat treatment of the precursor. It is featured by unique 3-D structure, where expanded graphite acts as scaffold to ensure a continuous entity, and Fe3C particles coated by carbon nanocapsules are embedded intimately. The Fe3C nanoparticles encased in carbon nanocapsules act as catalyst in the modification of SEI film during the cycles. The interesting 3-D architecture which aligns the conductivity paths in the planar direction with expanded graphite and in the axial direction with carbon nanocapsules minimizes the resistance and enhances the reversible capacity. The prepared composite exhibits a high reversible capacity and excellent rate performance as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The composite maintains a reversible capacity of 1226.2 mAh/g after 75 cycles at 66 mA/g. When the current density increases to 200 mA/g, the reversible capacity maintains 451.5 mAh/g. The facile synthesis method and excellent electrochemical performances make the composite expected to be one of the most potential anode material for lithium ion batteries. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The capacity and electrochemical kinetics mismatches between cathode and anode are two major obstacles for lithium ion capacitors. In the work, graphene coating and electrochemical prelithiation are used to reinforce the properties of activated carbon and graphitized carbon as cathode and anode. The activated carbon with high specific surface area, and the graphitized carbon with porosity are prepared with anthracite as raw material, then both of them are modified with anthracite-derived graphene. As cathode, activated carbon coated with graphene shows a capacitance of 302 F g-1 with 75% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The anode, graphitized carbon coated with graphene sheets delivers a capacity of 568.1 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 with 97% capacitance retention after 300 cycles. The LICs assembled with cathode and prelithiated anode show high energy and power densities, 315.1 Wh kg- 1 at 300 W kg- 1 and 133.3 Wh kg- 1 at 15000 W kg- 1, and superior cyclic stability, 78% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. This work illustrates surface graphene coating and prelithiation to balance the capacity and electrochemical kinetics mismatches of electrodes in LICs and blaze an efficient route to convert anthracite to high performance electrodes for LICs and other energy storage systems.

Abstract:The synthetic graphite with higher specific capacity and superior cyclic lifespan is prepared by high temperature graphitization of anthracite coupled with effective catalyst. In the process of graphitization, the thermodynamically unstable carbon atoms orderly convert from disordered structure to graphite crystal structure by thermal activation. However, it is necessary for the graphitization process at high temperature above 2800 ?C. The slow reaction speed, low conversion rate, and unmanageable temperature result in a low graphitization degree. Also, B2O3 as catalyst is beneficial to the directional growth of the aromatic layer in graphite structure, which reduces the cross-linking of the aromatic layer and enhances its coplanarity, as well as reduces energy barrier of graphitization and accelerates the formation of graphite phase. When served as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the material delivers high delithiation capacity of 369 mA h g-1 with first coulomb efficiency (FCE) of 85.3% at 0.05C and even 160 mA h g-1 at 3C. Moreover, at the current density of 0.5 C, the initial capacity still maintains more than 300 mA h g-1 accompanied with almost 98% capacity after 500 cycles. Often, more than 80% of capacity retention at 2 C enables it more competitive and attractive in the fields of anode materials. By matching the graphite as anode and commercial LiFePO4 as cathode, a full battery is assembled, which still remains the capacity of 93% after nearly 400 cycles, showing cyclic stability of the material. The research provides a direction for the mass production of graphite with coal.

Abstract:Anode materials that exhibit high energy density, high power density, long life cycle, and better safety profile for lithium‐ion batteries are necessary for the development of electric vehicles. Computational and experimental studies to describe the relevant aspects of carbon allotropes as anode materials are discussed, toward the significant improvement of specific power and energy capacity. The role of types of carbon ring and mixed hybridization (sp, sp2, and sp3) in carbon‐based anode materials for Li storage explored. An overview is provided on the procedures used to analyze the storage properties of anode materials using first‐principles theoretical methods such as intercalation energy, volume expansion, and open circuit voltage. Finally, the progress, importance, design, and the challenges of carbon‐based anode materials are comprehensively discussed.

Electrodeposition Behavior of Lithium Metal on Carbon Substrates with Surface Silvering

Abstract:Li-ion batteries (LIBs), the widely used energy storage devices, have been intensively studied to further increase their energy density and working life. To this end, lithium metal is the most promising high-capacity anode material, but the unstable electrochemical performance and dendrites formation inhibit its development. Based on DFT calculation, the adsorption energy analysis shows that the preferential and uniform Li deposition may occur on Li–Ag surface comparing to bare carbon surface. Therefore, we adopt thermal evaporation to silver the carbon surface to change the electrodeposition behavior of lithium metal. Li metal preferentially deposits on the Ag surface with flat appearance, restraining the formation of Li dendrites. The lithium metal/carbon composite anodes are subsequently prepared by electrodepositing Li metal on the bare or the modified carbon substrates, and three types of cell configurations, namely, Ag (B), bare CP and Ag (F), are compared in terms of electrochemical performance. The results show that the Ag (B) cell can effectively prolong the short-circuit time, enhance the electrochemical stability in the Coulombic efficiency, and better retain the specific capacity in full-cell tests due to the suppression of “dead Li”. This research provides a basic guidance for the electrochemical preparation of lithium metal/carbon composite anodes.

Abstract:The carbon-coated Si-Cu/graphite composite was obtained by mechanical milling of mixture of Si-Cu alloy and graphite followed by pyrolysis reaction of coal-tar pitch. XRD and SEM results showed Cu5Si alloy was formed after the intensive ball milling and SiC phase appeared after pyrolysis, composite particles were encapsulated by carbon matrix and the surface become smooth and compact. The electrochemical results exhibited the introduction of carbon-coating process decreased reversible capacity but obviously improved cycle performance. The reduced capacity was related to the inactive SiC phase and the improved cycle performance is mainly attributed to the homogeneous distribution of nanosized Si in silicon-copper alloy and elastic carbon matrix.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized and characterized Li4Ti5O12(LTO)-coated graphite as an anode material for Li-batteries. The surface of graphite powders was uniformly coated by the LTO nanoparticles to form a core-shelled structure via a sol-gel process, followed by calcination. The average size of graphite core was 20 mu m while the thickness of LTO shell was 60 nm to 100 nm. We found that LTO-coated graphite has better rate-capability and cycle life at RT and 55 degrees C, compared with the pristine graphite. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results of the cell with LTO-coated graphite anode showed a significant suppression of the impedance rise after 60 cycles. In addition, the Raman spectrum showed that after 60 charge-discharge cycles at 55 degrees C, the I-D/I-G ratio of the LTO-coated graphite electrode increased slightly, while that of the pristine graphite electrode increased significantly. The batteries with LTO-coated graphite anode exhibited excellent cyclic ability and high temperature performance. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Graphite is a perfect anode and has dominated the anode materials since the birth of lithium ion batteries, benefiting from its incomparable balance of relatively low cost, abundance, high energy density, power density, and very long cycle life. Recent research indicates that the lithium storage performance of graphite can be further improved, demonstrating the promising perspective of graphite and in future advanced LIBs for electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage stations. However, to obtain graphite electrodes with higher performance, it is essential to deeply understand the fundamentals of graphite and Li-graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), especially their crystal and electronic structures, and thus to regulate the structure to boost the kinetics of Li ion intercalation, storage, and diffusion in graphite. We introduce the crystal and electronic properties of pristine graphite and Li-GICs, specifically focusing on the development of theoretical calculations and their application in elucidating the band structure, stages, and phase stabilities of graphite and Li-GIC. Based on these fundamental aspects, the experimental researches on thermodynamics/kinetics, including electrochemical potential and Li diffusion rate of graphite anodes, are reviewed. Several key challenges and issues towards advanced graphite anodes with superior rate/capacity/cycle performances are discussed. In addition, advances of graphite and related materials for Na+/K+ storage are briefly summarized. Finally, we propose a series of promising strategies to improve the performance of graphite and recommend several research directions towards rational graphite anode design.
Dip-Coating of Carbon Fibers for the Development of Lithium Iron Phosphate Electrodes for Structural Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:This study describes a dip-coating method for applying an active material to commercially available intermediate modulus carbon fibers (CFs). A suite of tools were developed to assist with the handling and coating of CF tows to create disc electrodes. CF electrodes were fitted into 2025-type coin cells, for electrochemical analysis, first to determine their performance as anodes. Specimens of CFs were dip-coated with a slurry consisting of lithium iron phosphate, carbon black, and polyvinylidene fluoride, then dried, and fitted into half-cells to analyze the cathode performance. A cyclic voltammetry sweep was performed on each half-cell to determine suitable cycling potential limits, followed by galvanostatic cycling for a minimum of 30 cycles. Measured capacities for anode and cathode half-cells yielded 92 and 52.3 A h kg–1, respectively. A full-cell with CFs in both electrodes was assembled and tested, revealing a capacity of 24.7 A h kg–1 after 30 cycles. Finally, both the anode and cathode were examined with a scanning electron microscope to establish a benchmark (anode) to compare surface topologies and to analyze the quality of the active material applied via dip-coating (cathode).

Abstract:A summary of carbon/Li composite methods, lithiophilic design, types of carbon substrates, and in‐situ characterization techniques is given in this review. The lithium metal anode is a competitive candidate for next‐generation lithium‐ion batteries for its low redox potential and ultra‐high theoretical specific capacity. Nevertheless, obstacles regarding heterogeneous lithium deposition, dendrite growth, and poor Coulombic efficiency limit its practical application. Among rational electrode designs, carbon materials have been regarded as feasible hosts for stabilizing lithium to address the above issues due to their light weight, high conductivity, and adjustable physicochemical properties. Therefore, tremendous efforts have been made to design stereoscopic carbon materials with multitudinous lithiophilic sites and large specific surface areas to facilitate rapid lithium‐ion flux, nucleation and mitigate lithium dendrite formation by controlling the kinetics of lithium deposition. Furthermore, the mechanism of lithium plating/stripping is commendably elucidated with the help of advanced in situ characterization techniques. This progress report systematically reviews progress in carbon materials/lithium composite anodes for lithium metal batteries and the detailed parts are as follows: 1) carbon/lithium composite methods; 2) design lithiophilic mechanism; 3) various carbon materials substrates; 4) advanced in situ characterization techniques for lithium metal anodes; and 5) prospects toward the practical applications of advanced lithium metal batteries. This review provides new insights into lithium metal batteries' technological development and practical application.

Graphitic Carbon-Doped Mesoporous Fe 2 O 3 Nanoparticles for Long-Life Li-Ion Anodes

Abstract:Biomass carbon-coated and pseudocapacitance-assisted α-Fe2O3 has recently gained more attention for enhanced lithium storage performance. Herein, we used a waste poplar branch as a biotemplate and a carbon source to prepare graphitic-C-doped mesoporous α-Fe2O3 (α-Fe2O3/C) through a simple immersion–carbonization–calcination method. The influence of carbon content on both the microstructures and electrochemical properties was also studied. The product calcined in air at 400 °C (Fe2O3/C400) presents a hierarchically tubular structure with cross-linkage of 18% graphitic-C and α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of ∼28 nm. Meanwhile, the Fe2O3/C400 nanomaterial exhibits a large surface area of 114 m2 g–1 and mesopore size distribution centered at 2 nm. As lithium-ion battery anode material, such a unique hierarchical structure presents a certain pseudocapacitance behavior, thus improving its lithium storage performance. Electrochemical measurements show that the Fe2O3/C400 nanomaterial exhibits higher specific capacity and better rate performance. Especially, it can retain a capacity of 885 mA h g–1 at 1 A g–1 after cycling 1400 times, indicating good capacity retention and long-cycling stability. The good electrochemical performance mainly originates from the synergism of the unique microstructure of the Fe2O3/C400 nanomaterial, suitable doping of graphitic-C, and certain pseudocapacitance behavior. Abstract:The structures of modified carbons from bean dregs were regulated via graphitization treatment and chemical activation. The microstructure and electrochemical performance were studied using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrometer, SEM and TEM techniques. The electrochemical performance was investigated using electrochemical methods. After heat-treatment at 2800 degrees C, the obtained BDC-2800 possessed a high degree of graphitization and showed an outstanding cycling performance, delivering capacity decay from 423 to 396 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C after 100 cycles. The chemical-treated carbons also demonstrated enhanced electrochemical performance, especially for the KOH-treated sample. The BDC-K displayed superior specific charge capacity of 801 mAhg(-1) at 0.1 C, and showed an impressive rate capability of 643 mAhr g(-1) at 1 C. In addition, this sample delivered capacity retention of 94% after 500 cycles at 1 C. This good electrochemical performance was mainly due to its high surface area and abundant mesoporous structure. Abstract:The effects of carbonaceous materials on the physical and electrochemical performance of LiFePO4/C hybrids are reviewed. The major role, advantages and disadvantages of carbon-based materials in LiFePO4/carbon hybrids are discussed. The introduction of an in situ grown carbon coating would be beneficial to limiting the LiFePO4 particle growth and increasing the electric conductivity. The structure and precursors of the in situ grown carbons have a great influence in the rate performance of the hybrids, which can be related to an improved electron and ion transfer rate. Deposition of LiFePO4 into a carbonaceous matrix such as a templated membrane can increase the contact area between the active materials and the electrolyte, which favors a fast ion transport. The addition of conductive carbon and graphene would only effectively increase the electrical conductivity. In order to achieve an excellent electrochemical performance of LiFePO4, it is necessary to take advantage of and to combine these approaches to optimize electron and ion transfer rates. Also, it is most important to minimize the carbon content in LiFePO4/carbon hybrids to increase volumetric energy density and tap density when practical applications in electric vehicles are targeted.

Abstract:Porous carbon produced by reduction of supercritical carbon dioxide with alkali metals was used as anode material of lithium (Li) ion batteries. X‐ray diffraction, field‐emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and electron diffraction were used to characterize the structure of the products. It is shown that the products are consisted of graphite particles with relatively low graphitization and hold regular porous morphology. The porous carbon materials were evaluated as Li ion battery anodes. It exhibits a giant first discharge capacity of 1704 mAh/g at a constant current density of 0.20 mA/cm2, while the reversible capacity decreased to 200 mAh/g. The possible origins of the irreversible capacity of porous carbons and improvement method were discussed.
