Abstract:The thermal properties of coke are important for coking production and blast furnace operation. At present, the Coke Reactivity Index (CRI) and Coke Strength after Reaction (CSR) indices are used as key indicators for evaluating these thermal properties. Furthermore, the strength after a certain percentage of carbon loss has been used as a supplementary indicator. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the connection between microscopic characteristics and the post-reaction strength of coke. The pore structures of different industrial cokes were examined via optical microscopy. The indicators extracted from pore-wall distribution curves exhibited a strong correlation with the coke post-reaction strength. Using multiple linear regression analysis, we modeled the effects of ternary factors on this strength. The model may provide a new means of coal blending aimed at improving the quality of coke.

Abstract:To improve coke performance in the cupola, the authors discovered that coke used in blast furnaces [low coke reactivity index (CRI), high coke strength after reaction (CSR)] exhibits higher strength than foundry coke and may provide better performance due to larger coke pieces reaching the melt zone. Coke strength and sizing are extremely important in a cupola because the coke must reach the melt zone intact, stay in the melt zone long enough to replenish the coke bed, provide heat for melting and carbon pickup to the liquid iron. This research evaluates the cupola performance difference between cokes of high and low CRI. In addition, efforts were made to identify differences in characteristics of these cokes.

Abstract:Coke of FCC catalyst was detected online in the gas-solid fluidized bed by using the measurement of acoustic emission and multi-scale algorithm.Compared to the acoustic signals from the fresh catalyst particles beating on the wall,the signals from the coked catalyst were markedly different in frequency.According to multi-scale analysis of the acoustic signals,different results in energy percents on characteristic scale were presented.All experiments above proved that acoustic emission measurement could be used in detecting catalyst coke.

Abstract:Optimizing coal blending is important for high-quality development of coking industries, among which deep understanding of relationships between coal characteristics and coke quality is critical. This work selected four typical coals from Shanxi Province in China to investigate influences of their structures and properties on coke quality. Although these samples belong to coking coals, the mechanical strength and thermal strength of the corresponding cokes are quite different. Macerals in coals, especially vitrinite, have significant effect on thermal strength of cokes. The thermal strength of coke B is better than coke A, because coal A mainly contains desmocollinite and coal B has more telocollinite. The CSR of coke B, C and D is higher than 60%, indicating they possess good thermal property. In the coking process, relatively low initial softening temperature ( 100 °C), smooth fluidity region and appropriate maximum fluidity is helpful to improve coke quality based on Gieseler fluidity analysis. Coal C and Coal D have lower condensation degree, shorter aliphatic chain, and more hydrogen bond, which reveals that the condensation degree and hydrogen bond play important roles on the formation of plastic mass and coke thermal strength. Coke A shows unsatisfied properties because coal A has higher condensation degree and less hydrogen bond. In addition, TG-MS and CH4 evolution characteristics also imply the volatile matter released from coal A during pyrolysis mainly comes from the covalent bond with higher bond energy, which indicates that the chemical bond of coal A is more stable than other coals.

Abstract:Alkali metal is one of the key critical factors that determine the coke degradation. Previous studies on the influence of alkali metal on coke structure were mostly focus on the catalysis of alkali carbonates for coke gasification reaction. Besides, the difference of alkali metal and coke gasification effects on coke degradation was still not clear. Highly reactive coke developed by Nippon Steel was proved to increase the reaction efficiency and to decrease CO2 emission effectively. Therefore, conventional coke and highly reactive coke adsorbed 5% sodium were studied in this paper. Coke degradation tests were undertaken in atmosphere of N-2 and CO2. SEM, EDS and XRD were employed to analyze samples. Results showed that the degradation of conventional coke strength by sodium was stronger than highly reactive coke in the atmosphere of N-2. The effect of CaO catalyst on the coke reactivity has been interpreted as a change in highly reactive coke microstructure and strength.

Abstract:Metallurgical coke plays three primary roles in blast furnaces. It acts as a source for supplying reducing gases for reduction of metal oxide; it acts as a support to the raw material burden while descending through blast furnace and lastly it acts as a porous medium through which reactive gases can pass through the blast furnace. These roles are significant in blast furnace operation. Coke strength after reaction (CSR), coke reactivity index (CRI) along with parameters like Micum indices (M40/M10) assess the suitability of coke for blast-furnace operation. With the installation of larger blast furnaces, the need of coke with high CSR is more than ever. There are already many established methods to improve coke CSR through blend design, process optimization, additives, etc. But these works somewhat overlook the effect of particle size on coke CSR. The current work presents the impact of coal granulometry on coke CSR. It was observed in laboratory-scale carbonization of a commercial blend that the elimination of the > 5 mm fraction from the blend improves coke CSR by 2 points.

Abstract:Metallurgical coke is a crucial component in the production of steel worldwide. It is a porous composite material, created by conversion of metallurgical coal in a coke oven. A key property of metallurgical coke is its strength, and there is evidence that poor interface quality between the two key components of coke can have deleterious effect on coke strength. Here we create small samples of coke and image them using high resolution 3D micro-CT, with pixel size of approximately \(8\,\mu\)m. We use a Gabor filter, combined with morphology techniques to isolate the different components in the samples. Abstract:In order to study the association of coke quality with the little fluctuation of chemical structure of the coal, three coals (C1, C2 and C3) from the similar category were employed to prepare coke in a 10 kg-scale coke oven. The status-oriented (G value, inorganic and organic component, etc.) and process-oriented (fluidity, volatile release, etc.) properties of the three coals are assessed. The association of coal chemical structure with these properties and final coke quality is clarified based on the experimental results by C-13 NMR, Raman, etc. Clearly, the three coals from the similar category produce cokes with different properties. Chemical structure information obtained from C-13 NMR and Raman shows that large aromatic clusters (higher f(ar), C-a, etc.) with short chain hydrocarbon (lower CH2/CH3), and low graphitization degree (lower A(G)/A(D), PG-D) of coal are not favorable for the coke strength. On the one hand, these structural properties determine the low vitrinite reflectance of coal and restrict the crosslinking reaction that may assist in the formation of the turbostratic carbon structures and affect coke strength. On the other hand, large aromatic clusters but short chain hydrocarbon are difficult to be depolymerized to form mobile components or transferable hydrogen-rich radical donor or acceptor. The development of the fluidity is insufficient to enhance coke strength, which is manifested by narrow plastic range, high temperature zone of thermoplastic stage, and low fluidity. In addition, defected structures (high G(R)+V-L+V-R and IG(R)+V-L+V-R/I-D) in coal contribute to the high reactivity of corresponding coke. The unprotonated aromatic carbons (f(ar)(N)) may correspond to these defected structures in aromatic macromolecular. The results assist in establishing the association of apparent coal property and coke strength with coal chemical structure. The findings also support the assessment and prediction of coke strength for different coals, in particular, for coals that may fall into the similar category according to their similar apparent property.
Evolution of Coke Microstructure and Metallurgical Properties During Graphitization in a Blast Furnace

Abstract:The currently used low carbon operation in blast furnaces (BFs) leads to a thin coke layer and deterioration in gas and liquid permeability. Previous studies have reported that coke breeze, formed by the graphitization of coke, is one of the main influences on gas and liquid permeability in the high-temperature zone of a BF. To investigate the influence of the graphitization of BF coke on its metallurgical properties, the degree of coke graphitization under different heating temperatures from 1100 to 1500℃ was investigated. The dependence of the degree of graphitization on coke reactivity index (CRI) and coke strength after reaction (CSR) was also studied. The relationship between different degrees of graphitization in coke and alkali metals was clarified. Finally, the micro-morphology of coke was inspected and analyzed. Results show that with increasing temperature, the degree of coke graphitization intensifies. With every 100℃ rise in heating temperature, the degree of coke graphitization increases 1.8 times, the value of the spacing of layers (d002) decreases by 2%, and the values of the layers diameter of microcrystalline structure (La) and the stack height (Lc) are improved by 3% and 15%, respectively. In addition, it is observed that the surface stomata of the coke decreases particularly the large pores, the mosaic structure decreases, the isotropic structure increases, and the degree of structural ordering increases. When the degree of graphitization intensifies, the CRI of the coke gradually decreases, the CSR gradually increases, the degree of coke degradation weakens, the formed large pores reduced, and the trend for pore wall damage is reduced. Moreover, the alkali metal plays a catalytic role in improving the CRI and decreasing the CSR. It is considered that the graphitized coke resists the destruction of the alkali metal and thus decreases the degree of coke degradation.
A comprehensive investigation on the structural transformation and dissolution loss reaction of coke during gasification in CO 2 atmosphere

Abstract:The in-situ investigation of the structural transformation of coke during gasification can provide useful insights into its dissolution loss reaction in blast furnaces. In this study, the structural properties of coke are evaluated by analyzing its carbon matrix, pore distribution, and ash composition using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Raman spectroscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. The pore evolution and carbon structural transformation during gasification in CO 2 atmosphere are analyzed in-situ using synchrotron radiation SAXS-WAXS techniques for three coke samples prepared from coals with varying ranks. The strength and reactivity of coke are assessed based on its structure and dissolution-loss reaction mechanism during gasification. The results indicate that the high breakage resistance index (M 13 ) of coke is attributed to the interlocking of bent aromatic carbon layers with A D / A G less than 1.837. The amorphous structures characterized by A ( VL+VR+SL+S ) / A D higher than 0.935 in coke serve as the initiation site of reaction with CO 2 , leading to a decrease in the fractal dimension ( D S ) and interlayer spacing ( d 002 ) as well as an increase in the stacking width ( L a ). Subsequently, the etching of the carbon microcrystals and the dissolution loss of defective carbon structures alternately occur during gasification. The rough pore surface with D S more than 2.91 hinders the CO 2 diffusion, while the carbon matrix with A D /A G more than 2.269 effectively decreases the coke reactivity index (CRI) of coke. Overall, the findings of this study can offer a theoretical foundation for coke quality evaluation and effective optimization of iron-making processes.

Abstract:Two parameters proposed by RILEM,the critical stress intensity factor K ICS and critical crack tip opening displacement CTOD C ,and third parameter of the characteristic length l ch are applied for investigation of fracture characteristics of concrete,which is with different size of coarse aggregate and different content of silica fume,and under different curring condition.All specimens were tested at28days.The test results showthat for high strength concrete the compressive strength,splitting tensile strength,elastic modulus and critical stress intensity factor increase with the coarse aggregate size decreases,while the concrete behaves less brittleness.The use of silica fume improves the compressive strength,splitting tensile strength,elastic modulus and critical stress intensity factor of concrete;but at the same time,the concrete added with silica fume becomes more brittle.The longer the time of moist curing,the higher the values of compressive strength,splitting tensile strength,elastic modulus and critical stress intensity factor are.

Abstract:The results of a passive industrial experiment on coking at EVRAZ NTMK are analyzed using a selective matrix, rather than the whole data set, taking account of a comprehensive factor affecting the CSR and CRI values of the coke: the coking index of the batch CI ν0 . In this approach, broad variation in the response function ( CSR or CRI ) is ensured with a relative symmetric matrix, ruling out the predominance of a particular range of CI ν0 or the CSR and CRI values. Applying this approach to actual data for the industrial coking of batch at coke batteries 5–6 (wet quenching) and 9–10 (dry quenching) in a passive industrial experiment, we obtain mathematical models of for predicting the quality of wet- and dry-quenched industrial coke (the CSR and CRI values) as a function of the batch properties (CI ν0 ), with the existing conditions of coal preparation and coking at those batteries. Verification of the models for predicting the quality of wet- and dry-quenched coke (the CSR and CRI values) on the basis of extensive data for industrial coking at batteries 5–6 (62 runs) and 9–10 (58 runs) shows that the CSR and CRI values are predicted with acceptable accuracy for practical purposes.

Abstract:The structure of coke affects its reactivity and strength, which directly influences its performance in the blast furnace. This review divides coke structures into chemical structure, physical structure, and optical texture according to their relevant characteristics. The focuses of this review are the current characterization methods and research status of the coke structures. The chemical structures (element composition and functional group) can be characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging technology (13C NMR). The physical structures (pore structure and micro-crystallite structure) can be characterized by image method, X-ray CT imaging technique, mercury intrusion method, nitrogen gas adsorption method, X-ray diffraction method (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The optical textures are usually divided and counted by a polarizing microscope. In the end, this review provides an idea of the construction of a coke molecular structural model, based on the above characterization. With the coke model, the evolution principles of the coke can be calculated and simulated. Hence, the coke performance can be predicted and optimized.

Abstract:In this work, the influences of coal moisture control (CMC) and coal briquette technology on structure and reactivity of cokes were investigated by adding a certain proportion of briquette into raw coal with different moisture. The coking experiments were carried out in a tested coke-oven of 70 kg, and the properties of as-obtained coke were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and so on. The coke reactivity index (CRI), coke strength after reaction (CSR) and the optical texture of different cokes were also measured. The results indicated that the two technologies both can improve the structure of coke and reduce the reactivity of coke. The improved coke properties can be attributed to forming a more compact microcrystalline structure of coke to enhance its pore wall structure, its optical texture index (OTI) and its graphitization degree. Noticeably, the introduction of CMC technology in coal briquette process can produce the superposition effect to the great improvement of the coke properties. In addition, the results also indicated that the introduction of CMC technology in coal briquette process can reduce the sulfur content of coke due to the overflowed sulfur in the form of gas during the coking, and can almost be equivalent to substitute 10% briquette in coal briquette process in the improvement of the CRI and CSR from coke, implying the reduced amount of briquette to save coal resources.

Abstract:Coke is the only raw material that descends into the lower part of the blast furnace (BF) in its original form; therefore, it is of utmost importance to improve the coke properties for its use in BF operation. Over decades of operation, various advances have been made in the cokemaking process, and various advanced sensors have been employed that are useful for revealing process insights that are used for the development of process models for the carbonization process. In the present work, an attempt is made to review the various approaches adopted to achieve desirable coke properties. Furthermore, the comparison of the processes and their challenges are explained in detail, which led to the deterioration of coke. The various attempts to determine the end of the carbonization cycle and its importance in improving coke quality have been explained in detail. Furthermore, recommendations are made to improve the cokemaking process, and process models are focused on improving coke quality. Finally, the future of the coke-making process to reduce CO 2 emissions to meet global environmental regulations is briefly summarized.

Abstract:The effect of coke making to coke gasification reactivity is obvious.We made coke at different coke-forming time such as 60 min,30 min,20 min,10 min and at different coke making temperatures such as 800 ℃,700 ℃ and 600 ℃.We measured the coke gasification reactivity by using non-isothermal thermal gravimetric analyzer(TGA) at 1 200 ℃ and founded that the carbon conversion of coke-forming time of 60 min is the highest at different coke making temperatures. The specific reactivity of coke increased first and reduced afterwards. The maximum appeared at coke making temperature of 800 ℃ and coke-forming time of 60 min.So we deemed that coke making temperature of 800 ℃ and coke-forming time of 60 min was the appropriate coke-making condition.

Abstract:The geographically representative and time-related life cycle inventory (LCI) for intermediate industrial products is critical for further life cycle assessment (LCA) of final consumer products. A cradle-to-gate LCA is presented in this study to provide a Chinese-specific LCI of coke production and to compare its environmental performance in alternative quenching modes. The LCI was compiled using site-specific investigation data from local independent coking enterprises, complemented by literature, databases, and expert judgement. The results show that coke production with the newly promoted coke dry quenching (CDQ) technology, which reduces air emissions and recovers heat during the on-site quenching process, is more environmentally friendly than that with the traditional coke wet quenching (CWQ) technology, with up to 15% decrease regarding the selected environmental impact categories. Coal preparation and on-site coke production turn out to be the determining factors of environmental performance for both scenarios. This study provides an LCI for coke production in China, which, as an important intermediate product, will improve the LCA of the steel and iron industries. The quantitative LCA will also provide a solid basis for the neutralization of international trade barriers and the successful promotion of CDQ technology in China from an environmental perspective.

Abstract:China is the largest coke producer in the world, accounting for over 60% of the world coke production, which makes the coke industry in China a significant coal consumer and air pollutant emitter. Recently, China has taken a series of measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions from the coke industry, including eliminating old and low energy-efficiency coking technologies, promoting advanced technologies, and strengthening energy and environmental requirements on coking processes. As a consequence, China's coke industry is experiencing an unprecedented technology shift, which was characterized by the elimination of old, inefficient, and polluting indigenous ovens and small machinery ones within 10 years. This study examines the policies and the prompt technology shift in China's coke industry, as well as the associated energy and environmental effects, and discusses the implications with respect to the development of the coke industry in China towards a more efficient and clean future. As China sets stricter requirements on energy efficiency and the ambient environment, a more significant change focusing on technologies of energy saving and emission reduction is urgently needed at present. Those mature technologies, including coke dry quenching, coke oven gas recycle, fine particle removal, etc., should be enforced in the near future.
