Abstract:This chapter studies the coupled human-environment evolution of Shanghai as a unit and as a system composed of different social units, i.e., 13 urban districts, from 1949. Using a multidisciplinary approach based on theories and methods in urban studies, human geography, and environment sciences, it employs socio-economic data analysis, remote sensing, and geographic information system to characterize that evolution. First, this chapter presents an overall picture of urban sprawl and transformation of the urban population and environment of Shanghai. Second, at the district level, it analyzes the co-evolution of land use, economic conditions, and environment conditions to reveal the internal heterogeneity. While some districts exhibited positive urbanization trends, indicated by rapid economic growth, better environment conditions, and more appropriate land use, such as Pudong New Area, Minghang and Xuhui, others showed negative urbanization trends, illustrated by slow economic growth, worse environment conditions, and less appropriate land use, such as Zhabei and Yangpu. Although this is a preliminary assessment, we argue that studies on vulnerability to climate hazards should also consider the coupled human-environment evolution at finer scales as different entitlements, endowments, and coping capacities to deal with perturbation and stress are rested within the different social, economic, institutional, and political structures. We further identified the major driving forces contributing to the coupled human-environment evolution as economic restructuring and globalization, migration policy, and institutional involvement. We recommend mitigating the increasing disparity between urban districts, in order to achieve a more sustainable urban development in future that encompasses efficiency, equality, and environment in Shanghai.
