Abstract:Ammonia and aliphatic amines react readily in the oxygen-rich regions of the Cs symmetric fullerene peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 (1) and C60(OH)(Br)(OOtBu)4 (2 c). Michael addition-type hydroamination of the 1,4-diene moiety on the central skew-pentagon was observed when 1 was treated with ammonia or with nonbulky primary amines, while sterically demanding primary amines opened the epoxy moiety to form vicinal aminohydroxy fullerene compounds with the amino group on the central pentagon. In 2 c the bromo group was replaced under similar conditions by ammonia and primary amines. Cyclic secondary amines showed different reaction patterns, forming hydrogenation products or aminoketal-fullerenes when treated with 1 and 2 c, respectively. Single-electron transfer (SET) is the key step in all the proposed mechanisms. The compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data, and in addition, three single-crystal X-ray structures were obtained.

Abstract:The first umpolung strategy for the cycloacylation of fullerene using a N-heterocyclic carbene organocatalyst is reported. The coupling of [60]fullerene with different structural α,β-unsaturated aldehydes efficiently furnishes interesting [60]fullerene-fused cyclopentan-1-ones or cyclohex-2-en-1-ones in good to excellent yields. This new reaction displays a wide substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and diverse substituents such as aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, alkyl, and ester can be installed by using the corresponding enals.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:In the current work, the reactions of [60]fullerene with alkynes promoted by OH − (base) are addressed. The treatment of C 60 with alkynes in the presence of TBAOH produces alkynylation products (R-C 60 –H) with high selectivity in o -DCB at 100 °C. Plausible reaction mechanisms were proposed. This work provides a convenient and environmental friendly method for the functionalization of fullerenes.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxide C(60) (OH)(Cl)(OOtBu) reacts with PhMe(2)SiH/B(C(6)F(5))(3) to give oxahomofullerene. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the hydroxyl group in the central pentagon ring is essential to convert the tert-butylperoxo group into a ketal moiety. Migration of the silyl group and transformation of the siloxy group into a phenyl group are observed in the deprotection of the fullerene bound siloxy group. A 12-membered open-cage fullerendione was obtained through oxidation of a [6,6]-fullerendiol. This orifice could be closed to form ketal/hemiketal moieties by BF(3)-catalyzed reaction with methanol. All of the new fullerene derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic data, and structure of the open-cage fullerendione was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:Hexachloro[60]fullerene, C60Cl6, was reacted with a mixture of ROH/H2O (R = Me, Et, n-Pr, (CH2)(2)C CH) to form both C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) and C60Cl(OR)(5). Only the C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) were isolated with bulky alcohols, ROH (R = (CH2)(3)C CH, (CH2)(4)C CH). Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides, C-60(O)(OR)(4), were prepared by treating C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) with CuI. The epoxy moiety could be hydrolyzed to the vicinal diol derivatives, C-60(OH)(2)(OR)(4), and then oxidized to form dicarbonyl open-cage fullerenes, C60O2(OR)(4). CuI was found to convert the terminal alkynyl addends into iodoalkynyl addends on the C-60 cage.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 exhibit chemo- and regioselective reactions under mild conditions. The epoxy moiety is opened by ferric chloride to form vicinal hydroxy chloride C60Cl(OH)(OOtBu)4. BF3 is also effective in opening the epoxy moiety. The O-O bond of the fullerene mixed peroxide is cleaved by aluminum chloride to form both [5,6]- and [6,6]-fullerene hemiketals (oxohomo[60]fullerenes). A Hock-type rearrangement is proposed for the formation of the hemiketals, in which a fullerene C-C bond is cleaved. Lewis acids and/or visible light can initiate isomerization of the hemiketal isomers. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed the results.

Abstract:Abstract Phase-transfer catalytic reaction involving the use of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) as catalyst and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution as the source of hydroxide ions is among the popular choices for synthesis of fullerenol, the polyhydroxylated fullerene. To further understand the process, two experiments were conducted to preliminarily explore the influences of the amount of TBAH and NaOH, respectively, in terms of the achieved level of hydroxylation (i.e. number of hydroxyl groups per fullerenol molecule). The process responded to the variation of the amount of TBAH (over a twofold series of 3–192 drops, average volume 0.0223 ± 0.0004 ml per drop) in a nonlinear manner with a local maximum achieved from 24 drops TBAH (giving 13 OH groups) and a local minimum from 48 drops (giving 8 groups). To the variation of the amount of NaOH (over the range of 0.5–8.0 ml NaOH), the fitted function of the process response resembled Freundlich adsorption isotherm, with an initially increasing trend before levelling off at 4.0 ml NaOH (giving 15 OH groups). It is therefore suggested that fullerene hydroxylation could be explained by liquid–solid adsorption. In addition, it was found that ambient carbon dioxide led to the existence of sodium carbonate in the bulk of the collected product (although not chemically bound). It was also discovered that ambient ozone adversely affected fullerenol synthesis by converting C 60 fullerene into fullerene epoxide (C 60 O). The affected syntheses thus produced epoxide-containing fullerenol instead.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:Photolysis of aminopolycarboxylates with C 60 has been shown to be an effective method for the preparation of isomerically pure fullerene derivatives.A series of fullerroaminopolycar boxylate derivatives have been prepared by this method.For example,glycine esters react with C 60 to give C 60 (ROOCCHNHCHCOOR),the mechanism of which is proposed to involve complicated bond breaking and formation processes.Aminoacid esters with secondary and tertiary amino groups can add to C 60 by simply losing two H atoms.Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate(EDTA) with C 60 yields the EDTA containing fullerene monoadduct C 60 (MeOOCCH) 2NCH 2CH 2N(CH 2COOMe) 2.Compared to well known 1,3 dipole addition method of fulleropyrrolidine preparation,the photoreaction reported here avoids the use of aldehydes or ketones and is specially suited for the preparation of the fullerene containing complexones such as the EDTA C 60 derivative.Langmuir Blodgett film formation and the photoelectric properties of these fulleropyrrolidine ccompounds are investigated.Due to the presence of hydrophilic groups the derivatives form stable and transferable monolayer.By using metal ion sonlution as the subphase,metal complexes of the fullerocarboxylic derivatives are prepared at the air/water interface.Photoelctrical behavior of the LB film fabricated on ITO are studied under various conditions.For most of the compounds electrons flow from the electrolyte through the LB film to the ITO.The quantum yield of the fullerene derivatives can reach 8%.

Abstract:The fullerendiol C60(OH)2(OOt-Bu)4 1 reacts with various arylboronic acids ArB(OH)2 to form fullerene-containing boronic esters C60(O2BAr)(OOt-Bu)4 in up to 95% yield depending on the structure of aryl group. Bis(pinacolato)diboron (B(OCMe2)2)2 also reacts with 1 to form C60(O2BB(OCMe2)2)(OOt-Bu)4. The bisboronic ester C60(O)(O2BAr)2(OOt-Bu)2 was also obtained starting from a tetrahydroxyl fullerene derivative C60(O)(OH)4(OOt-Bu)2. The fullerenyl boronic esters are moderately stable in air. Single crystal X-ray structure of C60(O2BPh)(OOt-Bu)4 was obtained.

Abstract:The fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(OOt-Bu)(6) was found to react with FeCl3 to form open-cage compounds C-60(O)(4)(OOt-Bu)(4) 2 and C-60(O)(2)(OH)(OOt-Bu)(5) 3. Addition of hydroxyl amine to 3 closes the opening, yielding compound 5 with a hemiacetal and hemiaminal moiety. Oxidation of 5 with diacetoxyliodobenzene eliminates the hydroxylamine addend and reforms the open-cage compound 3.

Abstract:Four isomers are currently known for the trioxygenated fullerene derivative C-60(O)(3), three regioisomers with all of the oxygen addends as epoxy groups and the unstable ozonide isomer with a 1,2,3-trioxlane ring. Here we report the synthesis of an open-cage isomer for C-60(O)(3) with a ketolactone moiety embedded into the fullerene skeleton through a three-step procedure mediated by fullerene peroxide chemistry. Two fullerene skeleton carbon-carbon bonds are cleaved in the process. The open-cage derivative C-60(O)(3) can be converted back to C-60 through deoxygenation with PPh3. Single crystal X-ray structure confirmed the open-cage structure.

Abstract:Fullerene skeleton modification has been investigated through selective cleavage of the fullerene carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions. Several cage-opened fullerene derivatives including three [59]fullerenones with an 18-membered-ring orifice and one [59]fullerenone with a 19-membered-ring orifice have been prepared starting from the fullerene mixed peroxide 1, C60(OOtBu)6. The prepositioned tert-butyl peroxy groups in 1 serve as excellent oxygen sources for formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The cage-opening reactions were initiated by photoinduced homolysis of the tBu-O bond, followed by sequential ring expansion steps. A key step of the ring expansion reactions is the oxidation of adjacent fullerene hydroxyl and amino groups by diacetoxyliodobenzene (DIB). Aminolysis of a cage-opened fullerene derivative containing an anhydride moiety resulted in multiple bond cleavage in one step. A domino mechanism was proposed for this reaction. Decarboxylation led to elimination of one carbon atom from the C60 cage and formation of [59]fullerenones. The cage-opened [59]fullerenones were found to encapsulate water under mild conditions. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data. Single-crystal structures were also obtained for five skeleton-modified derivatives including two water-encapsulated fulleroids.

Abstract:Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides C-60(O)Ar-n(NR2)(4-n), n = 1, 2, have been prepared by treating 1,4-adducts C-60(OH)Ph and C-60(Tol)(2) with cyclic secondary amines. The epoxy moieties in these mixed tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides were hydrolyzed into the corresponding diol derivatives, which were further oxidized into diketone open-cage fullerenes with a 10-membered orifice. A few other reactions also showed that the present tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides with both amino and aryl addends exhibit improved chemical reactivity over the tetraamino[60]fullerene epoxide without any aryl group.

Abstract:A series of isomerically pure alkynyl-substituted fullerenol derivatives such as C-60(OH)(6)(O(CH2)(3)CCH)(2) were synthesized through Lewis acid catalyzed epoxy ring opening and/or S(N)1 replacement reactions starting from the fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(t-BuOO)(4). Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition readily converted the terminal alkynyl groups into triazole groups. Intramolecular oxidative alkyne coupling afforded a fullerenyl crown ether derivative.
