Abstract:Pavement preventive maintenance (PPM) has been a research topic in recent years at home and abroad because of the importance and cost-effectiveness of timely preventive maintenance (PM) for pavements. But the timing of PPM is still an unsolved problem for us. Based on the function of PPM and the situation of highway development in China, the indexes of asphalt pavement functional performance-based PM is given in this paper. These indexes include the aging of asphalt pavement, permeability coefficient of pavement under driving condition, safety of driving on asphalt pavement(including Skid Resistance and rut), ride quality index (RQI) and pavement condition index (PCI). The key questions during determining these indexes are also given respectively.

Abstract:The degree of homogeneity determines directly the performance-related properties and service life of asphalt pavements, and influences the overall life cycle cost of pavement preservation. Homogeneity has been an index of asphalt pavement Quality Assurance (QA) / Quality Control (QC). At present the effect of homogeneity on the mechanical response of pavements has been investigated lesser, even homogeneity is paid much attention in the field. The purpose of this research is to study the relation of homogeneity and mechanical response of asphalt pavements. The basic assumptions were introduced in brief. The pavement structural models and structural parameters were also given. Finally based on multilayered elastic analysis software program BISAR, the relationship between homogeneity and the mechanical response of asphalt pavements was investigated via computing the stress, strain and displacement at the bottom of each structural layer. Results show that homogeneity influences the mechanical response of asphalt pavements; under the same vehicle load and natural environmental factors the displacement is more in flexible base asphalt pavement than in semi-rigid base asphalt pavement, and the tensile strain is more at the flexible base bottom than at the semi-rigid base bottom; the tensile stress almost always appears at the asphalt surface and the base bottom, and usually is more at the semi-rigid base asphalt surface than at the flexible base asphalt surface.

Abstract:Critical element of an effective preventive maintenance (PM) program is to determine the appropriate time to conduct the certain treatment on the right pavement. Several methods could assist to determine when will be most effective to perform the pavement preventive maintenance (PPM). These methods include application of ride quality index or distress index (RQI or DI), condition based or time based PM, cost benefit evaluation, life cycle cost analysis (LCCA), decision trees or decision matrix, etc. By evaluation, the limitation of these methods was given. Based on the limitation of determination of appropriate time of PPM and the complexity of pavement destruction, the suggestion was made that the appropriate time of PPM should be based on multi criteria and pavement performances. The idea of pavement functional performance based PM was also given.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:Pavement unevenness affects the vehicle operating cost, speed, riding comfort, safety,pavement service life and etc. The current mechanistic-empirical（M-E） design procedure of asphalt pavements is based on the computational model of a flat pavement instead of uneven pavement as it is the case in reality. In this paper, a tire-pavement-interaction FE model is developed to investigate the influence of pavement unevenness on the mechanical responses of asphalt pavements. For both winter and summer conditions, the strain at the bottom of the asphalt layer due to the tire load is found to decrease as the wavelength of the unevenness increases. Moreover, the strain is larger at lower speeds and decreases as the speed increases. It is found that the stress levels are higher in summer conditions than under winter conditions for the same pavement irrespective of wavelength. The fatigue life increases with increase in speed of the tire for a pavement and also increases with increase in the wavelength of the pavement unevenness. The results indicate that pavement unevenness significantly influence the mechanical responses of asphalt pavements and thus influences the service life of asphalt pavements. As a result,the current M-E design algorithm of asphalt pavements should be modified to consider the pavement unevenness to allow better design processes for asphalt pavement.

Pavement premature failure on a moisture susceptible base

Abstract:A forensic investigation was conducted to determine the underlying cause of a premature pavement failure. The premature pavement failure was occurred in the form of rutting and alligator cracking. Through extensive field and lab testing, it was found that the moisture susceptible base is the primary cause of the premature failure and the porous asphalt concrete (AC) being the secondary cause. It is noted that the base layer was built according to plan and met the current material and field density requirements. As part of the field investigation, ground penetration radar (GPR) was utilized to survey the entire area. AC cores were taken to correlate the dielectric measurements from GPR with the lab measured density to generate the density/air-void map. More than 50 cores were taken to accurately determine the air void content. The results indicate that the air void exceeds 10 and did not meet the specification requirements. Based on the lab results, there are 36 of the cores fall into the category of either penalty or remove and replace. It was concluded that material requirements which are only based on the field density and moisture content are inadequate to control the construction quality, as it was not able to protect against premature failures illustrated in this paper from occurring. Even though it is tedious to conduct the moisture susceptibility tests to determine strengths at different moisture levels, it is a viable tool to minimize the premature pavement failures. © 2011 ASCE.
Influences of Pavement Irregularity on Ground Vibrations Generated by Moving Traffic Load

Abstract:A traffic load-uneven pavement-double-layered ground coupling model was established in order to study the influences of pavement irregularity on the vibrations of layered ground generated by moving traffic load. The upper and lower soil layers were simulated as elastic medium and a fully saturated poroelastic half-space governed by Biot’s theory, respectively. The pavement was simplified as a Kirchhoff thin plate, and the road surface irregularities were simulated by sine curves. The wheel-road dynamic loading was obtained through the linear Hertizian contact model. The governing equations of this coupling model were solved by the Fourier transform and the time-domain results were obtained by applying the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). Numerical results show that the influence of wheel-pavement dynamic loading caused by pavement irregularity on the vibration of layered foundations cannot be ignored. When the shear modulus of the upper soil was small, the acceleration of the ground surface caused by the dynamic loading was greater than that caused by the axle load, which is the main factor that causes the ground surface vibration response. As the shear modulus of the upper soil layer increased, the vibration caused by the dynamic loading decreased, but it is still non-negligible. In addition, the dynamic loading is the main factor that causes the excess pore water pressure response in the lower saturated soil layer.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement, with its good mechanical properties, durability, driving comfort, and aesthetic environmental protection, is suitable for various vehicles to pass through, and has solid, durable, flat, and good anti-skid, anti-seepage, fatigue resistance, and high-temperature cracking resistance. However, due to various reasons, early damage to asphalt pavement often occurs, which has been listed as one of the common problems in highway engineering quality, demonstrating its universality and severity. This article investigates typical diseases of asphalt pavement in Xinjiang region and proposes corresponding prevention and control measures, providing reference for the maintenance of asphalt pavement.

Abstract:In order to analyze the positions of premature damage occurred in asphalt pavement,the common semi-rigid base asphalt pavement was modeled by finite element method.The stress and strain characteristics of asphalt pavement structural layers under dynamic and static loads and the maximum shear stress varying with depth were simulated and analyzed.Major types of pavement premature damage position and the damage resistance characteristics which different layers should have were analyzed from the perspective of pavement mechanical response.Then the trial research to fight against premature damage was carried on.The results show that(1) the 3D compression stress fluctuates in 0-3 cm depth from pavement surface;(2) the area of 2-10 cm depth from pavement surface belongs to high shear stress area where the rutting may occurr easily;(3) the bottom layer of asphalt pavement bears tensile stress under static load and tension-compression stress under cyclic loads,and fatigue damage may occurr easily.

Abstract:The accidented pavements could bring displacement disturbance to the vehicles moving on them;and the irregular disturbance caused the vibration of the vehicle,which made the vehicles produce additional dynamic loads on pavement during vehicles running.The vehicle dynamic loads are the main reason that caused the pavement failure.The correlative studies concentrated on the dynamic load of single vehicle on pavement,while the unstable traffic flow loads worked on pavement actually.Aimed at the engineering problem,the car-following model was used to simulate the velocities and relative distances of every vehicle on pavement.PSD(Power Spectral Density) was used to describe the stochastic characteristic of pavement roughness.Then,the simulation model of the quarter vehicle vibration system was built using Simulink.The dynamic response analysis of cement concrete pavement under traffic flow loads was processed;and some conclusions were drawn,that could provide references for the structural design of pavement and vehicle,and the analysis of dynamic interaction between vehicles and pavements.

Abstract:Based on the index of homogeneity of asphalt mixture and the data from field survey,partial segregation causes for asphalt pavements during construction,such as aggregate stockpile,asphalt paver selection and conveyance of asphalt mixture were quantitatively investigated.The research results show that improper aggregate stockpile,inappropriate asphalt paver selection and conveyance of asphalt mixture all influence homogeneity of asphalt pavements and can give rise to segregation.Finally corresponding preventive countermeasures against segregation were put forward,i.e.aggregate should be on flat and rigid ground to avoid intermixing of different batches and water intrusion;half width paver should be selected;and the mixture delivery distance should be reduced as much as possible.
A Novel Dynamic Detection Method of Impact Factor Considering Deterioration of Pavement Roughness

Abstract:The influence mechanism between the impact factor of bridge and pavement roughness was analyzed and a novel bridge dynamic detection method was presented in this article. Based on the vehicle-bridge vibration theory, the effect of both the spatial and frequency domain characters of pavement roughness on the impact factor were analyzed. Then, derived from the probability distribution model of the impact factor data, a new index for the dynamic increment that was excited by the pavement roughness was introduced. The new index can indicate the impact factors caused by the pavement roughness of different Power Spectral Density grades with selected assurance factors. Lastly, together with the new index, a novel dynamic detection method, which was developed from the obstacle moving truck testing method, was proposed. With a new equivalent design method, the dynamic increment excited by the artificial obstacles could be set similar to that which was caused by different degrees of pavement deterioration. The future dynamic response of the bridge could be predicted.

Abstract:Abstract In the context of rapid social and economic development, the transportation industry is under increasing pressure, and the requirements of vehicles on roads are increasing. People are paying more and more attention to the quality of asphalt pavement. However, due to the threat of excessive diseases, the pavement is prone to water damage and cracks. Therefore, it is particularly important to strengthen the quality control of asphalt pavement construction and disease prevention. Based on this, this article conducts an in-depth study on asphalt pavement disease and construction quality control under the background of big data. Based on the big data mining technology, this paper realizes the research on the relationship between pavement disease problems and influencing factors such as air temperature, surface porosity and traffic load, summarizes and analyzes several problems in the construction process, and proposes common disease prevention measures. Research shows that to improve construction quality management, it is necessary to establish a construction information database based on scientific statistical methods, monitor key indicators in the construction process in real time, and control and manage the entire construction process. Once problems are found, effective measures must be taken Solve it in time to ensure that the construction can be carried out smoothly, thereby effectively improving the level of pavement construction.
Reinforcement of interlaminar mechanical properties between rigid and flexible layers of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement using interlayer treatment

Abstract:To increase the interlaminar mechanical properties between the asphalt course and the semi-rigid base course, a novel method is proposed, which utilises pits to lock and bond them. Three types of pavement with different treatments are constructed and tested to assess their interlaminar mechanical properties. The experimental results show that the shear strength and pulling strength of the interface connected by nine pits of 18 mm between the asphalt mixture and the cement-stabilised macadam are, respectively 41.6% and 29.6% higher than those of the prime coat asphalt. When the ambient temperature rises, the maximum interlaminar shear strength of the pavement treated with pits decreases with the slowest rate, becoming 16.6% lower than that of the prime coat asphalt. When the shear rate increases, the interlaminar shear strength of the pavement treated with pits increases at the fastest rate, resulting to be 28.5% higher than that of the prime coat asphalt. Furthermore, since the size has an important effect on the interlaminar mechanical properties, the larger interlocking area between the asphalt mixture and the cement-stabilised macadam results in the ability to bear greater interlaminar shear strength and pulling strength. The proposed method provides several advantages for future engineering applications.

Abstract:Rutting damage of asphalt concrete pavement has become one of the most main disea-ses.The performance and service quality of asphalt concrete pavement are descended because of rutting.Soformation mechanism and influence factors of rutting are analyzed and the control measures are put forward,they are still a very exigent task.The research on interlayer connection,the voids of surface course,the aggregate gradations of surface course,the density of each layer is made in order to study the formation mechanism of rutting and analyze the influence factors of causing rut.In the end,some improvement suggestions are presented.The research findings can be consulted in engineering practice and design.
