Abstract:Silver nanocrystals with uniform sizes were synthesized in droplet microreactors through seed-mediated growth. The key to the success of this synthesis is the use of air as a carrier phase to generate the droplets. The air not only separates the reaction solution into droplets but also provides O-2 for the generation of reducing agent (glycolaldehyde). It also serves as a buffer space for the diffusion of NO, which is formed in situ due to the oxidative etching of Ag nanocrystals with twin defects. For the first time, we were able to generate Ag nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes in continuous production by using droplet microreactors. For Ag nanocubes, their edge lengths could be readily controlled in the range of 30-100 nm by varying the reaction time, the amount of seeds, and the concentration of AgNO3 in the droplets. Furthermore, we demonstrated the synthesis of Ag octahedra in the droplet microreactors. We believe that the air-driven droplet generation device can be extended to other noble metals for the production of nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes.
A Mechanistic Study on the Nucleation and Growth of Au on Pd Seeds with a Cubic or Octahedral Shape

Abstract:This article reports a systematic study on the seed-mediated growth of PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a variety of controlled morphologies. The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by controlling a set of experimental parameters, which include the amount of ascorbic acid used as a reductant, the amount of HAuCl4 as a precursor to elemental Au, the reaction temperature, and the type of seeds employed. Starting from Pd nanocubes of 18 nm in edge length, PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, which includes hybrid dimers, coreshell nanocubes with flat faces, and coreshell nanocubes with concave faces could all be obtained by simply speeding up the reduction of HAuCl4. The same synthesis and control could also be extended to seeds based on Pd octahedrons. For the first time, it was possible to generate Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes and octahedrons with concave faces. The Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes with concave faces exhibited enhanced activity in catalyzing the oxidization of ascorbic acid relative to their counterparts with flat faces or the cubic Pd seeds.

Abstract:Arrays of noble metal nanoparticles show potential applications in (bio-) sensing, optical storage, surface-enhanced spectroscopy, and waveguides. For all such potential devices, controlling the size, morphology, and interparticle spacing of the nanoparticles is very important. Here, we combine seed-mediated growth with nanosphere lithography to study the controllable growth of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), in which the self-assembly monolayer of polystyrene (PS) on a silicon surface is used to guide the modi. cation of alkanesilanes and the subsequent adsorption of gold seeds; seed-mediated growth is applied to controlling the morphology and size of Au NPs. The size of adsorption region (determining the number of adsorbed gold seeds) is controlled by etching PS microspheres with oxygen plasma or annealing PS microspheres at the glass transition temperature. The size and morphology of the Au NPs are controlled by changing growth conditions. In such a way, we have achieved the dual control of the obtained Au NPs. Preliminary results show that this strategy holds a great promise. This approach can also be extended to a wide range of materials and substrates.

Abstract:Single-crystal gold nanospheres with controlled diameters in the range 5-30 nm were synthesized by using a facile approach that was based on successive seed-mediated growth. The key to the success of this synthesis was the use of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a capping agent and a large excess of ascorbic acid as a reductant to ensure fast reduction and, thus, single crystallinity and a spherical shape of the resultant nanoparticles. The diameters of the gold nanospheres could be readily controlled by varying the amount of seeds that were introduced into the reaction system. The gold nanospheres could be produced with uniform diameters of up to 30 nm; thus, their localized surface plasmon resonance properties could be directly compared with the results that were obtained from theoretical calculations. Interestingly, we also found that these gold nanospheres self-assembled into dimers, larger aggregates, and wavy nanowires when they were collected by centrifugation, dispersed in deionized water, and then diluted to different volumes with deionized water.

Abstract:A facile seed-growth method was developed to synthesize AgAu alloy and core/shell nanocrystals (NCs) using different-sized Ag NCs (6.1, 7.4, and 9.6 nm) as seeds and octadecylamine as the reducing agent, surface ligand, and solvent. Pre-synthesized Ag NCs acted as catalysts for the reduction of Au precursors at 130 °C. Transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and optical absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize as-synthesized NCs. Spherical AgAu alloy NCs were obtained when pre-synthesized 6.1 and 7.4 nm Ag NCs were used as seeds. While, if 9.6 nm Ag NCs were used as seeds, cubic Ag/Au core/shell NCs were finally obtained. The shapes and structures of AgAu NCs are related to the Ag seed sizes and the growth mechanism of alloy and core/shell NCs is discussed in detail. Different reaction temperatures were tested to optimize the synthesis of AgAu alloy NCs, and it was found that the optimum reaction temperature for the growth of AgAu alloy NCs is 130 °C.
Synthesis of Gold Colloid with Exclusion of Nonspherical Nanoparticles by Seeding Growth

Abstract:This paper reports a method for the preparation of monodispersed gold colloid by seeding growth, with elimination of the nonspherical by-products, which were often observed and difficult to separate in previous works. The formation of nonspherical particles was found to be closely associated with the experimental conditions, such as, molar ratios and addition sequence of the reagents. The larger the [NH2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratio, the less and smaller the nonspherical particles. In addition, the effect of addition sequence can be ascribed to that of [N-H2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratio, since different addition sequences make different instantaneous [NH2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratios during the addition and thus lead to different shape distribution of particles. Based on these findings, a method is adopted to rule out the nonspherical particles, by using high ratios of [NH2OH] to [HAuCl4] (the [NH2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratio being kept in the range of 10 similar to 30) and favorable addition sequence (NH2OH being added to seeds prior to HAuCl4). No nonspherical nanoparticles can be observed, and the resulted gold colloid shows good monodispersity and excellent size-controllability.
Wet chemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles using silver seeds: a shape control from nanorods to hollow spherical nanoparticles

Abstract:A seed-mediated method was employed here for CTAB-assisted gold nanoparticle growth. 3–4 nm silver aqueous colloid was stabilized by sodium citrate and used as seed solution to initial gold particle growth. The concentration of seed solution was calculated based on its relationship with silver atom concentration and seed particle statistical mean volume. It was found that there is a maximum seed concentration of 8.57 × 10−12 M (~25 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M seed solution added) in 10 ml 2.5 × 10−4 M HAuCl4 growth solution for growth of rodlike particles. Below this seed amount, the aspect ratio of nanorods could be controlled by varying the silver seed amount, i.e. nanorods with aspect ratio ~18.9 were obtained when the seed concentration in the growth solution was 0.343 × 10−12 M by adding 1 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M silver seed solution and nanorods with aspect ratio ~9.69 were obtained when the seed concentration in the growth solution was 1.715 × 10−12 M by adding 5 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M silver seed solution. As the seed concentration in the growth solution was more than 8.58 × 10−12 M (25 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M silver seed solution was added), there were no rodlike particles formed but spherical ones instead. These spheres were further studied by TEM and found to all be hollow structures. It was suggested that there were probably two different nucleation processes for growth of nanorods and spheres. For hollow spheres, the reaction between Ag seeds and Au ions formed hollow structures based on the Ag particle template effect. Then further growth of Au on these hollow structures produced hollow gold nanospheres. For nanorods, due to the very low concentration of silver seed (molar ratio of Ag seed: Au = 3.426 × 10−8), the growth process here probably was started by silver-induced Au nucleation, in which reduction of gold ions by silver resulted in small gold clusters. These gold clusters further grew up into nanoparticles and nanorods in the presence of CTAB.

Abstract:High-angle annular dark field imaging in the electron microscope has been exploited to reveal the internal structure of monodispersed, bimetallic gold (Au) - silver (Ag) nanoparticles of similar to 4 nm diameter, prepared using a seed-growth wet chemical method and passivated with an organic layer. Starting with a 3 nm Ag seed particle, deposition of Au atoms to a final overall atomic ratio of Ag:Au=1:2 leads to nanoparticles with an Ag-rich core and an Au-rich shell, as expected. If the overall atomic ratio is 2:1, the core/shell structure is not observed. The physical significance of these observations is discussed in terms of the stability of particles of nanoscale dimensions. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
Controlling the size and morphology of Au@Pd core-shell nanocrystals by manipulating the kinetics of seeded growth.

The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by tuning a set of reaction parameters, including the type and concentration of capping agent, the amount of ascorbic acid used as the reducing agent, and the injection rate used for the precursor solution. Starting from Au nanospheres of 11 nm in diameter as the seeds, Au@Pd coreshell nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, including octahedra, concave octahedra, rectangular bars, cubes, concave cubes, and dendrites, could all be obtained by simply altering the reaction rate. For the first time, it was possible to generate Au@Pd nanocrystals with concave structures on the surfaces while their sizes were kept below 20 nm. In addition, the as-prepared Au@Pd nanocubes can be used as seeds to generate Au@Pd@Au and Au@Pd@Au@Pd nanocrystals with multishelled structures.

Abstract:Seed-mediated synthesis strategies, in which small gold nanoparticle precursors are added to a growth solution to initiate heterogeneous nucleation, are among the most prevalent, simple, and productive methodologies for generating well-defined colloidal anisotropic nanostructures. However, the size, structure, and chemical properties of the seeds remain poorly understood, which partially explains the lack of mechanistic understanding of many particle growth reactions. Here, we identify the majority component in the seed solution as an atomically precise gold nanocluster, consisting of a 32-atom Au core with 8 halide ligands and 12 neutral ligands constituting a bound ion pair between a halide and the cationic surfactant: Au 32 X 8 [AQA + •X - ] 12 (X = Cl, Br; AQA = alkyl quaternary ammonium). Ligand exchange is dynamic and versatile, occurring on the order of minutes and allowing for the formation of 48 distinct Au 32 clusters with AQAX (alkyl quaternary ammonium halide) ligands. Anisotropic nanoparticle syntheses seeded with solutions enriched in Au 32 X 8 [AQA + •X - ] 12 show narrower size distributions and fewer impurity particle shapes, indicating the importance of this cluster as a precursor to the growth of well-defined nanostructures.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile method for generating Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes with edge lengths controllable in the range of 13.4-50 nm. The synthesis involved the use of single-crystal, spherical Au nanocrystals of 11 nm in size as the seeds in an aqueous system, with ascorbic acid serving as the reductant and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as the capping agent. The thickness of the Ag shells could be finely tuned from 1.2 to 20 nm by varying the ratio of AgNO(3) precursor to Au seeds. We also investigated the growth mechanism by examining the effects of seeds (capped by CTAC or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)) and capping agent (CTAC vs CTAB) on both size and shape of the resultant core-shell nanocrystals. Our results clearly indicate that CTAC worked much better than CTAB as a capping agent in both the syntheses of Au seeds and Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes. We further studied the localized surface plasmon resonance properties of the Au@Ag nanocubes as a function of the Ag shell thickness. By comparing with the extinction spectra obtained from theoretical calculations, we derived a critical value of ca. 3 nm for the shell thickness at which the plasmon excitation of the Au cores would be completely screened by the Ag shells. Moreover, these Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes could be converted into Au-based hollow nanostructures containing the original Au seeds in the interiors through a galvanic replacement reaction.

Abstract:Designed experiments are carried out to systematically study the effects of silver ions on morphology and yield of gold nanorods synthesized via a seed-mediated method. Gold nanorods synthesized with different silver ions and CTAB concentrations were characterized by absorption spectroscopy and TEM. The shape and yield of gold nanorods were effectively controlled by adjusting the concentration ratio of CTAB and silver ions for synthesis. Dark field images of a glass slide sample with gold nanorods deposit and a sample with gold nanrods staining cells further confirmed that high quality gold nanorods were obtained.
Size-dependent growth dynamics of silver-gold core-shell nanoparticles monitored by in situ second harmonic generation and extinction spectroscopy

Abstract:The in situ growth dynamics of colloidal silver-gold core-shell (Ag@Au CS) nanoparticles (NPs) are studied using time-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) and extinction spectroscopy. Four sequential additions of chloroauric acid, sodium citrate, and hydroquinone are added to a silver nanoparticle solution to form a gold shell around a 45 nm silver core under different reaction conditions, resulting in final sizes ranging from 80 to 125 nm in diameter. In the first addition, a bumpy, urchin-like surface morphology is produced, while the second, third, and fourth additions provide additional nanoparticle growth with the surface morphology becoming more smooth and uniform, as shown using transmission electron microscopy measurements. The in situ extinction spectra increase in intensity for each addition, where blue-shifting and spectral narrowing are observed as the Ag@Au CS NPs grow in size. The extinction spectra are compared to Mie theory simulations, showing general agreement at later stages of the reactions for smooth CS surfaces. The in situ SHG signal is dominated by surface-enhanced plasmonic hotspots at the early stages of the shell growth, followed by gradual decreases in signal as the surface becomes more smooth. Two-photon fluorescence is also monitored during the CS growth, showing complementary information for comparisons to the extinction and SHG results. The holistic study of the synthesis and characterization of Ag@Au CS nanoparticles using in situ SHG spectroscopy, extinction spectroscopy, and Mie theory simulations allows for a comprehensive analysis of the complex growth dynamics occurring at the nanoscale for developing optimized plasmonic nanomaterial properties.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are attracting tremendous attention in biomedicine, and their related performances are shape and size-dependent. For biomedical applications, water-soluble AgNPs are necessary. However, aqueous syntheses of AgNPs with controlled shape and size are relatively difficult as the balance between nucleation and growth is hard to regulate. This paper describes a robust method for controllable synthesis of quasi-spherical AgNPs based on the combination of the seed-mediated growth and the Lee-Meisel method by thermal reduction of AgNO(3) with citrate. In the presented method, citrate-stabilized AgNPs with tunable sizes up to 80 nm were achieved through one-step or stepwise growth process using qualified spherical 4 nm AgNPs as starter seeds. Specially, the two main difficulties (formation of nanorods and secondary nucleation during the growth stage) in the previous studies have been effectively overcome by tailoring the experimental parameters such as the reaction temperature and the seed amount, without extra additives, pH adjustment, and laser treatment. The crucial factors that affect the uniformity of the resulting AgNPs are discussed.
Improved Size Control of Large Palladium Nanoparticles by A Seeding Growth Method

Abstract:A new approach to the preparation of large palladium nanoparticles with diameters between 25 and 100 nm is presented. In this approach PdCl42- ions are reduced on the surface of performed 12-nm-diameter gold "seeds'' by the introduction of ascorbic acid. The resultant particles exhibit improved monodispersity relative to previous work. Interestingly, these nanoparticles possess Au-Pd core-shell structures. The method can be scaled up to produce 50-110 mg of large palladium nanoparticles.

Abstract:We report herein a modified approach to the seed-mediated synthesis of large-diameter quasispherical gold nanoparticles by using 2-mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) as a reducing agent in aqueous solution at room temperature. Simply through a one-step seeding growth approach, gold nanoparticles in the size range 30–150 nm were prepared from 15 nm gold seeds under the particular [HAuCl4 ]:[MSA] ratio of 1:0.6. Particle diameters could be controlled by varying the ratio of [HAuCl4]:[seeds]. The resultant gold nanoparticles are quasispherical with narrow size distributions (relative standard deviation, RSD<10%) and high yields; other nanostructures (nanorods, triangles, or hexagonal nanoplates) are rarely found, although they are frequently observed during the seeding growth when using hydroxylamine or ascorbic acid as reducing agents. The presence of MSA, which is not only a reducing agent but also a capping agent, is believed to make a great contribution to the isotropic growth of gold seeds and the formation of such monodisperse quasispherical particles.

Abstract:We synthesized SiO2@Ag core–shell particles with uniform and complete silver shells with an improved seed-mediated growth method. Silver nuclei produced on silica spheres with an electroless plating method served as nucleation sites for the growth of outer silver shells. By adjusting the Ag/SiO2 ratio, the thickness of silver shells was tuned, and the extinction peaks of SiO2@Ag particles shifted from visible to near-infrared (NIR) region. Comparing with previously reported methods, two important strategies were employed in the growth step of silver shells. First, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was added to control the isotropic growth of silver nuclei and improve the stability of core–shell particles. Second, the growth step of the outer silver shells was completed in a few seconds by increasing the reaction temperature and pH value. Furthermore, the SiO2@Ag core–shell particles were self-assembled into a monolayer, which served as a good SERS substrate.

Abstract:Aiming at spherical and monodisperse silver nanoparticles with diameters up to 100nm, the potential of heterogeneous nucleation of silver particles was explored. Gold seed particles, mainly produced with a spark discharge generator, were carried by nitrogen through a three-zone tube furnace. Silver was evaporated at 1210°C in the first zone of the furnace and particle growth and shaping took place in the subsequent zones, heated to 730°C and 390°C, respectively. The generated aerosol was monitored by a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), while parameters, such as furnace temperature, seed particle size and concentration and nitrogen carrier gas flow, were investigated. Off-line atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the morphology of the silver nanoparticles in addition to the SMPS scans. Spherical silver nanoparticles with a mobility diameter of more than 115nm and a geometric standard deviation of typically 1.09 or lower at concentrations as large as 5×105 cm−3 could be produced. The mobility diameter of the monodisperse aerosol could be varied in the range of 50nm to 115nm by changing the furnace temperature or the gold seed particle size. Elemental analysis revealed that the gold from the seed particles formed a homogeneous alloy with the silver ( ≤ 3.5 at.% of gold). The growth mechanism could not be identified unambiguously since the obtained silver particles could both originate from heterogeneous nucleation of silver vapour on the seed particles or from coagulation and coalescence of the seed particles with smaller, homogeneously nucleated silver particles. Moreover, the narrow size distribution opens the opportunity to obtain an exclusively singly charged, monodisperse calibration aerosol at sufficient concentrations after an additional mobility selection process.

Abstract:Seed-mediated growth method (SMGM) in preparation of gold nanoparticles becomes one of the most popular methods due to the simplicity of the experimental procedures and flexibility in structural modifications. In this paper, we report a new method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles using silver seeds. The effect of seed concentration and growth time are investigated in this work. By increasing the silver seed concentration, it is found that the color of the colloidal gold nanorods obtained are changed from light pink to reddish purple, the surface plasmon resonance band is shifted to the blue region whereas absorption spectra becomes narrower. The additional peak is also spotted when increasing silver seed concentration to 5 μl. Meanwhile, increasing the growth time from 5 to 240 minutes tends to increase the color concentration of the solution. Besides that, the absorbance of colloidal gold nanorods is also increased with an increase in the growth time whereas optimum growth time is found to be 45 minutes. FESEM characterization shows that gold nanoparticles shapes are dominated by nanorods with average length, width, and aspect ratio are 129.8 nm, 42.9 nm, and 3.4, respectively. The energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) shows the chemical composition of the synthesized sample is Gold (Au) with weight % and atomic % are 32.23 and 5.98, respectively. Besides that, signals from Carbon (C), Oxygen (O), and Indium (In) atoms were also recorded from EDS spectra. The present approach thus provides new method for synthesis gold nanoparticles with additional plasmon resonance peak thus it has very potential for application in plasmonic sensing.
