Abstract:Due to the complexity of aerosol formation and the combustion process, fire and explosion hazards of flammable aerosols formed in the process industry are not fully understood. In this study, the flame propagation process of aerosolized industrial heat transfer fluids was investigated to understand the combustion phenomena in aerosol systems. Experimental observation shows different characteristics of flames propagation in aerosol systems, which are determined by the evaporated fuel vapor in aerosol system prior to encountering the flame and the amount of fuel vapor from droplets evaporating inside flames. Numerical modeling revealed that these factors were mainly determined by aerosol droplet size and velocity. The observed characteristics of the aerosol flames and the nature of continuous fuel evaporation that causes the reduction of droplet sizes suggest that ignition of flammable aerosols in the process plant might create more severe consequences than ignition of vapor mixtures. Results also imply that the aerosol dispersion conditions, as well as its formation conditions in scenarios of industrial fluid release, which determine the droplet size and movement velocity, need to be considered in assessment of fire hazard from the flammable aerosols.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the petrochemical industry, sulfur-related devices are increasing. In this paper, a fire accident occurred in a petrochemical storage tank of a petrochemical enterprise. Through analysis, we found that the direct cause of the accident was the spontaneous combustion of ferrous sulfide (FeS), which caused the explosion of the oil and gas mixture between the floating disk and the tank top. In addition, we analyzed the corrosion of aluminum floating plates in oil tanks by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The analyses showed that although AlMn1 Cu aluminum alloy has high corrosion resistance, the material composition contains impurity elements such as silicon and iron, which weakens the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy, and the intergranular corrosion and corrosion effects such as pitting corrosion cause cracks to form in the floating disk. The oil and gas that volatilize in the oil tank diffuse through the pores between the floating plate and the top of the tank to form an explosive mixture of oil gas and air. Next, the corrosion products of the manhole cover and the edge of the floating plate were sampled and were analyzed the sulfur and iron contents by elemental analysis. The results showed that the sulfur content in the sample of the manhole of the No. 1 tank was 25.04 wt%, and the sulfur content in the sample at the edge of the floating plate was 7.49 wt%. This was owing to the manhole at the bottom of tank No. 1 is not in contact with air. The edge of the floating plate of tank No. 1 has a low sulfur content due to the long-term contact with air and the burning process during an accident. Using Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), we conclude that the necessary conditions for the accident are appropriate heat storage conditions. The key factors are bad desulfurization effect on the refining process, sulfur in the crude oil, nonresistance of the tank material to corrosion and presence of S2- in the tank. Finally, corresponding countermeasures are proposed.

Abstract:When LPG tanks are exposed to fire, they will fail in different mode. And the failure mode determines whether catastrophic boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE) take place. The objective of this work is to develop a correlation between the failure severity and the tank condition at failure. In this paper, the process and mode of fire-induced failure of LPG tanks was analyzed. And three failure modes of short-duration BLEVE, long-duration BLEVE, and jet release were presented, for each failure mode, the preconditions and key factors were analyzed. At last, a BLEVE accident was analyzed.

Abstract:Reformer furnace hot outlet manifold is a critical component in aromatic plants. Unfortunately, a hot outlet manifold used in Nanjing YPC Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. failed after it has been in service for only 2years. In the present paper, a failure analysis of the failed hot outlet manifold was performed by careful visual observation, mechanical properties tests, chemical content examination, microstructural analysis and microchemical analysis of fine precipitates. Finite element method (FEM) considering creep effect was also employed to define the evolution of critical region. Experimental results showed that the failure was a combination of overheating and high stress concentration. Exposing it to excessive temperatures at high stress significantly accelerated the creep rate, thus, leading to the premature failure. FEM analysis showed that hoop stress generated by the work inner pressure was the main reason leading to the crack initiated and propagated along axial direction of the manifold. Moreover, sequence of the failure region achieved by the simulation correlated well with the experimental analysis. To prevent the failure, better control of operating temperature was strongly recommended.

Abstract:The corrosion of petroleum containing sulfur in refining process and the accidental spontaneous combustion of petroleum containing sulfur in tanks are always problems in refining enterprises at home and abroad. The accidents of spontaneous combustion of petroleum containing sulfur in tanks happen very often. Analysis of the mechanisms of spontaneous combustion and finding the causes of accidents are important for preventing such accidents. The mechanisms and causes of spontaneous combustion of petroleum containing sulfur in a tank are analyzed through on-the-spot research and analysis of several typical accidents in the present study. The factors influencing the accidents, such as the type of petroleum, tank material, oxygen content in environment, contact chance of sulfide and atmosphere, refining technique, environmental temperature and environmental moisture are summarized. On this basis, the method of fault tree analysis is used and a FTA logic chart of such accidents is built (Fig.1). After the calculation of minimal cut set of the fault tree, the causes of the spontaneous combustion accidents, the main critical conditions are found. They are as follows: (1) Petroleum contains sulfur; (2) Inner wall of the oil tank is not corrosion resistant; (3) There are S 2- . Accordingly the technical prevention measures including refining techniques of oil, lean oil operation, design of oil tank and the routine management are put forward. It is expected that they will provide useful guidance for preventing similar spontaneous combustion accidents from happening.

Abstract:The accident equipment and accident mediums from 2001 to 2006 were statistically analyzed in China's chemical industry. The rules for equipment accidents and the distribution features of accident mediums were summarized. The typical physical evidences for fire and explosion accident investigation, including explosion debris, accident vessels, splashing materials, soot and traces of sootiness were discussed. Accident causes were qualitatively and quantitatively discussed. The above research results are very helpful to the theoretical analysis of accident causes and the effective accident prevention.

Abstract:Factory explosion accidents not only cause damages of factory facilities and equipment, or casualties usually, but also cause fire disaster due to various reasons, resulting in larger losses. After the occurrence of accidents, timely, accurate, and efficient response is an urgent need to protect the safety of people's lives and property. A hazardous Factory Explosion accident in North China in 2019 was taken as an example by this paper. It conducts research from four aspects, including the basic situation of the accident, the handling of the explosion accident, and the analysis of the cause of explosion accident. The useful advice and efficient disposal methods of accidents, the enhancement of disaster prevention and disaster relief capabilities, and the formation of a long-term mechanism to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property are expounded in this paper, in order to provide a reference for similar accident management.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:Alcohol-based fuel is widely used in the catering industry due to the excellent economy, but its explosion risk has not been paid much attention in thermal engineering. In this paper, a serious fire accident caused by the leakage of civil alcohol-based fuel vapor in Northeast China is introduced in detail. A case study is carried out by means of on-site investigation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, and the accurate evaluation and reproduction of the multi-physical field loads are realized. There were two flammable and explosive gas leakage sources, liquefied petroleum gas and alcohol-based fuel, in the building during the accident. Which kind of gas was involved in the explosion process in the early stage of the accident and caused a major fire is an important part of the primary solution of the accident investigation team. In this paper, the damage consequences of the two gases after explosion were effectively restored by CFD. By comparing the on-site damage and numerical results, the explosion medium is identified as the alcohol-based fuel vapor and air explosive mixed gas in the gas cylinder room. The explosion process is that the sparks and high-temperature spatter generated during the welding process of the bracket ignite the methanol-air vapor near the inlet of the fuel tank, and the flame enters the upper gas-phase space of the tank from the inlet pipe and cause the explosion, resulting in a large amount of fuel splashing in the tank and causing fire. The key investigation techniques and research ideas provide an important reference for accident investigation and disaster analysis, and have scientific significance for revealing the accident cause and preventing similar accidents.

Abstract:The causes of two similar coke cooling water tanks' explosion incidents are analyzed in this paper.The flash explosion incidents are determined as chemical explosion according to occurrence conditions of mechanical explosions and chemical explosions.Then the causes of these incidents are analyzed based on occurrence conditions of chemical explosions.The results show that the air comes in with the drop of level and it mixes with the combustible gases in the tank to form flammable mixture,which is ignited by the heat released by the spontaneous combustion of iron sulfide formed during sulfur corrosion on the tank wall.Finally,safety countermeasures such as nitrogen seal,water spray and so on are proposed in order to avoid similar accidents.

Abstract:This paper deals with the consequences assessment associated with the accidental catastrophic explosion in the case of high-pressure tank (165 L, 35 MPa) rupture during fire test. Two catastrophic explosion accidents caused by the thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) failure in activating in time were reported. The detailed explosion processes were recorded and analyzed, providing a valuable study case for improving the hazard identification. A method was developed for calculating the explosion energy stored in high-pressure hydrogen tank based on the real-gas state equation of the hydrogen. Three kinds of damage patterns were analyzed synthetically considering the intensity of the blast wave, thermal radiation, and flying fragments. It is found that for the overpressure of blast wave, the slight injury for human and minor damage for equipment are expected in the radius range of within 14.0 m and 65.4 m, respectively. Similarly, the safe radius distances of thermal radiation for human and equipment are 140 m and 52.1 m. The flying distance of the destructed tank increases with the increment of projection angle. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the data collected from the accidents. The proposed method provides a theoretical support for taking enough safety measures in advance to prevent dangerous consequences of high-pressure storage hydrogen tank during fire test.
Experimental and Theoretical Study on Erosion of Tanks Containing Coking Gasoline

Abstract:Self-combustion accidents of tanks containing coking gasoline are a great threat to the safety production in oil refining enterprises. The simulating experiment study about it was performed. A few kinds of steel materials including A 3, stainless steel, 20 # and aluminum were used in the experiment. The experimental samples can be direct erosion samples and steel samples with dope. The experiment results could be analyzed by the mass difference of samples before and after the experiment. The erosion can be removed by both mechanical and chemical reaction methods. The characters of the sample surface and the composition and structure of erosion resultants were analyzed by electron microscope, X-rays instrument respectively. The result shows that the erosion rate of different steels is different not only to the same kinds of oil but also to the different oil. The erosion production of steel to oil comprises FeS, FeS 2, Fe 3S 4 and Fe 9S 8. The higher the sulfur content is, the more serious the erosion of coking gasoline to tanks is. On the basis of the analysis of the experimental study, the mechanism of erosion and spontaneous combustion of tanks containing coking gasoline was studied. The key factors to the erosion and self-combustion of tanks containing coking gasoline were also discussed. It can be concluded from theoretical study that spontaneous combustion of tanks containing coking gasoline is mainly caused by the erosion productions of tanks. The type of oil, the steel materials, the content of oxygen and environmental temperature are influence factors to the erosion and self-combustion of tanks containing coking gasoline. The study results are available for the safety design of tanks containing coking gasoline and the improvement of production of coking gasoline.

Abstract:This research was based on a rare case involving an explosion accident of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bus that occurred in the second week of December 2019 in China. The author of this paper participated in the whole accident investigation process as expert. Through the nonlinear elastoplastic analysis of the bursting tank by finite element simulation, this explosion accident was caused by the rapid phase transition of residual LNG during the deicing of the frozen pipeline by water, and the human factor was the direct cause of the accident. To understand the accident causation in depth, human factors involving safety issues in the LNG vehicle maintenance operation were identified using a modified human factors analysis and classification system and the analytic hierarchy process method. Furthermore, the lessons learned, and recommendations were revealed to prevent such accidents in the field of liquefied natural gas vehicle.

Abstract:Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a vital energy source as well as a chemical feedstock, known for its flammable and explosive property. The demand for LPG has increased in recent years, leading to the frequent occurrence of leaks and explosion accidents, which pose a serious threat to public safety. This paper investigates the process of the consequences evolution of leakage of LPG and explosion accidents, using the Wenling, Zhejiang, China, LPG tanker explosion accident as an example. The main explosive processes that occurred after the leak, i.e., Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE) and Vapor Cloud Explosion (VCE), were reconstructed through the collection and organization of data from the incident. The EFFECTS software was used for the simulation of container rupture, vapor dispersion and explosion pressure. The simulation results were consistent with the actual on-site effects. Multi-energy TNO method was used to measure the impact of VCE on overpressure hazards. This resulted in a blast energy of 3.1 × 10 5 MJ and a staff wound radius of 324 m. Based on the site's terrain and traffic route layout, measures were proposed to install protective walls around the turnaround area. Effective measures were taken to reduce the range and intensity of the explosion and thus to mitigate the consequences of the accident. This measure reduced the damage radius of the accident by 25.6%. This work will serve as a reference for investigation, analysis, scenario development and recommendations to prevent accidents.

Abstract:With the rapid development and application of hydrogen in the chemical and energy industry, the safety of hydrogen industrial facilities has been widely concerned. In this study, the safety of hydrogen accidently released from a high-pressure tube storage system (tube diameter:10 mm, storage tank volume:4 L) was explored experimentally. The combustion behavior of the transient hydrogen jet and explosion overpressure under self- ignition and electric spark induction were investigated. Besides, the explosion overpressure and jet flame evolution laws of the hydrogen cloud induced by the release of unsteady turbulent hydrogen jets into the open environment were analyzed. The results revealed that the peak value of hydrogen self-ignition explosion overpressure was higher than that of electric spark ignition overpressure. Compared with spark ignition, hydrogen self-ignition flame structures can be maintained for longer time. However, spark ignition at low release pressures was more likely to cause hydrogen ignition and explosion compared to self-ignition. Finally, the combustion behavior and potential hazards of the ignited free transient hydrogen jet under different ignition modes were analyzed. This study can provide a reference for the prevention and control of hydrogen explosion accidents in practice.

Abstract:In recent years, the explosion accidents of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have induced tremendous losses. To analyze the deflagration danger of LPG, the explosion pressure and flame propagation features of the premixed LPG–air mixture in a closed pipeline at increased initial pressures and temperatures were examined by the numerical method. It has been shown that with an increase in the initial temperature, the highest explosion pressure and explosion induction period decrease, while the maximum flame temperature increases. As the initial temperature rises, the formation of the tulip flame accelerates, and the depression of the flame front increases at the same time. The elevated initial pressure raises the highest explosion pressure and the maximum flame temperature. Nevertheless, when the initial pressure exceeds 0.5 MPa, its impact on the flame temperature slowly diminishes. In addition, the gray relational analysis approach was utilized to evaluate the correlation between the initial condition and the derived parameters. The findings indicate that the initial pressure exerts the largest influence on the four explosion parameters. The research finding is important for exposing the deflagration risk features of LPG under complicated working situations, evaluating the explosion risk of correlated procedures and devices, and formulating scientific and effective explosion-proof measures.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Overheating and Failure Analysis on the Fire Tube of Heating Furnace after Scaling

Abstract:In order to find out the causes of a burning leakage accident of fire tube in oil heating furnace,fouling and microstructure of the fire tube were analyzed and metal temperature under the fouling of the same kind fire tube was detected. The results showed that fouling on the surface of fire tube led to metal overheating and damage of spheroidizing microstructure,which caused the decrease in the bearing capacity of fire tube. Under the pressure of furnace for a long time,the fire tube crept,swelled and became thinning,which resulted in the damage and leakage. Several measures were put forward to avoid the occurrence of similar accidents,such as detecting and evaluating the microstructure damage,replacing with the heat resistant steel and shortening the cleaning period.

Abstract:Gas explosion accidents in connected devices significantly compromise industrial safety. To study the dynamic characteristics and propagation behaviors of gas explosions in connected device, the vessel-duct explosion test system and Fluent conducted explosion experiments and numerical simulations on CH 4 /air mixtures. The study found that the overpressure peak tends to decrease at first and then increase with distance, and the overpressure peak near the sudden contraction structure of the connected device is smaller than those at other measuring points. The maximum overpressure peak and flame speed show a proportional relationship with increased blocking rates. When the obstruction rate of impediments inside the duct is 0.75, the maximum overpressure peak and flame speed inside the duct are respectively 0.414 MPa and 242 m/s. These values are 21.8% and 61.3% higher than when there are no obstacles, respectively. The obstacles in the propagation duct also have a positive effect on the increase of overpressure in the ignition vessel. The mechanism of flame acceleration in connected device was discussed, supported by experimental and numerical findings. The findings of this research can offer not only theoretical but also technical guidance for explosion-proof and disaster reduction related to connected device operations in the chemical industry and other industries.

Abstract:Experimental and analytical studies were carried out related to the detection and extinguishing of fires, the toxicity of products in equipment with oxygen-enriched media and at elevated pressure. Toxicity of combustion products in the pressurized pressure chambers is due to the release of aerosol particles and gaseous products of thermal-oxidative destruction of materials, for which empirical dependences are presented over a wide temperature range allowing calculations to determine the integral relative yields of reaction products. Analysis of the experimental results shows that the increase in the mass yield of aerosol particles occurs more intensely than that of toxic gases, and a noticeable release of gases begins at a temperature of about 523 K, while the release of dispersed particles occurs already at a temperature of approximately 473 K. At the early stage of thermal destruction in the temperature range 473–623 K, the yield of aerosols is 5 times higher than the yield of gases by mass. When the temperature rises close to the ignition temperature, the combustion source can be detected using gaseous products, in particular CO and CO2. Justification for the methodology for assessing the main parameters of fire extinguishing in the pressurized chambers is given. The most important elements of the main components, elements and installation as a whole are: inertia, intensity of supply of fire extinguishing agent. Dependence obtained analytically, which was confirmed in experiments, between the extinguishing time and the intensity of the supply of fire extinguishing agent is presented, which considers the characteristics of the environmental parameters in the chamber and the thermophysical properties of the flame. Dependences were obtained related to the extinguishing time on the intensity of the supply of sprayed water, on the size of the sample, and on the oxygen content in the chamber atmosphere. Results of the experimental studies indicate that changes in oxygen concentration in the atmosphere have a more noticeable effect on extinguishing parameters than changes in gas pressure.
Combustion characteristics and fire hazard assessment of small-scale pool fires in increased oxygen concentration

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of oxygen concentration on pool fire combustion in specific locations where oxygen concentrations exceed 21% due to oxygen leaks, such as rocket launch sites, aircraft, submarines, etc. The combustion characteristics of small-scale pool fires under high oxygen concentrations should be conducted by experimental and theoretical analysis. This study discussed the effects of high oxygen concentrations on heat release rate, burning rate, and combustion efficiency under Fire Propagation Apparatus (FPA) test conditions and measured the flame height and boiling mechanisms in a Semi-open Oxygen-adjustable Experimental Platform (SOEP). The results show that boiling combustion of small-scale pool fires is more intense, the burning rate and heat release rate in the boiling stage are significantly enhanced under high oxygen concentrations. Empirical models of flame height and heat feedback have been established. In conclusion, the hazards of oxygen-enriched fires were evaluated. This study provides foundational data and predictive models to mitigate the threats posed by oxygen-enriched pool fires in the process industry.
