Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which is currently prepared by catalyzing the oxidation of 5-hydroxyme-thylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased platform compound with broad market prospects. Herein, a detailed free-radical chain reaction mechanism consisting of both main and side reaction pathways was proposed to describe the liquid-phase air oxidation process of 5hydroxyme-thylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over a Co/Mn/Br catalyst. The higher reactivity of the hydroxymethyl group than the aldehyde group for HMF oxidation was first explained according to the retardation effect of alcohols on free-radical reactions and the reactive activity of active hydrogen on the two substituents of HMF. Considering the low stability of HMF, the possible side reactions including condensation, decarboxylation, decarbonylation, and ring-opening for HMF oxidation were further investigated. Subsequently, to obtain more reliable model parameters, a lumped kinetic scheme was developed considering only the formation of important and detectable reactants, intermediates, and products. Since the total reaction rate is not sensitive to the reactant concentration, a fractional kinetic model was adopted to correlate the experimental results and evaluate the kinetic parameters.

Abstract:We have developed an effective route for obtaining 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with a yield of 92.6 mol% from the dehydration of fructose in N,N-dimethylformamide using a mixture of AlCl3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 as catalyst. The NMR analysis showed the intermediate formed among fructose, AlCl3 and H3PO4 plays an important role in the novel result.

Abstract:2, 4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde was prepared using 1, 3-dimethoxybenzene as raw material through Vilsmeier formylation with DMF directly. The compound was characterized by IR and NMR as a qualified product. Under the optimal conditions the product obtained from the orthogonal experiments could be given in 94.2% yield with purity of 98.64%, after purification the purity of final compound could be reached 99.6%.

Abstract:Recently, we have developed highly regio- and stereoselective carbometalation of 2-alkynols and 2,3-allenols. The organometallacyclic intermediates may be trapped with I(2) to afford 3-iodoalk-2-en-1-ols. These 3-iodoalk-2-en-1-ols may readily undergo the Sonogashira coupling with terminal propargyl alcohols to form 4-alkyn-2-ene-1,6-diols. Subsequent cycloisomerization in DMA or CH(2)Cl(2) with Au(PPh(3))Cl and AgOTf as the catalyst would afford polysubstituted 2-(1-alkenyl)furans; with PdCl(2) as the catalyst and the reaction in DMA in the presence of allylic bromides, the same substrates afforded polysubstituted 2-(1,4-alkadienyl)furans. In both types of catalyzed cyclization reactions, the elimination of H(2)O promoted the aromatization to form the furan ring. Different alkyl or aryl groups could be introduced into different positions of furans due to the substituent-loading capability of 3-iodoalkenols and diversity of the terminal propargyl alcohols and allylic bromides.

Abstract:A novel process involving the coupling of the hydrogenation of furfural and the dehydrogenation of 1,4-butanediol has been studied in the vapor phase for the synthesis of 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL) over the same Cu-based catalyst. It was found that hydrogen and heat energy are utilized with high efficiency in this process.

Abstract:In this paper,THF was used as carbonyl source and tert-butyl hydroperoxide(TBHP)was used as oxidant to oxidize THF to 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran,and then isomerization to 4-hydroxybutyraldehyde by ring-opening reaction,then it reacted with ethanolamine under acid catalysis to form imine intermediate(M). On the other hand,benzaldehyde was obtained from benzyl alcohol by copper catalyzed oxidation reaction, and then reacted with M to obtain stereospecific(E)-alpha-hydroxyethyl-alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes,which was further derivatized to obtain the a-functionalized alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes. The configuration of the product was confirmed by COSY(homonuclear chemical shift correlation spectroscopy). Our method has the advantages of low cost and simple synthesis process.

Abstract:In this study we report a new reaction pathway in which the hydroxyl and the aldehyde groups of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural were aminated respectively.Hydroxyl group was aminated via Ritter reaction followed by direct reductive amination of aldehyde group.For the Ritter reaction of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural,mixture of trifluoromethane sulfonic acid and phosphoric anhydride showed good performance and the intermediate N-acyl-5-aminomethyl furfural with the highest yield of 89.1 wt％ was obtained.Optimization of direct reductive amination of 2,5-bis(aminomethyl) furan was conducted and a yield of 45.7 wt％ was achieved.This study presents a simple way for preparing bis(amino)furans from renewable biomass based 5-hydroxymethyl furfural,which enriches the biorefinery concept from biomass.

Abstract:Fast and efficient galvanostatic conversion of 2,4-diarylfurans into dimeric furan-2(5H)-ones is now possible in one pot and good yields at room temperature in sustainable aqueous organic solvent. Recent applications of these highly desired structures demand our attention since they are a versatile alternative to acrylates in polymerization to achieve green materials. The reaction mechanism proposal, supported by density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations, involves furanoxy radicals, detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), as the last intermediate before a homocoupling step that affords butenolides. The process can be successfully extended to an array of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on the aromatic ring. The proposed pathways to explain the formation of the products are rationalized and discussed. A concomitant oxidation of water to hydroxyl radicals is not discarded, particularly with electron-withdrawing substituents at the aromatic ring. In addition, the biological activity as biocides of the obtained compounds was tested, and they showed promising activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract:A strategy for the stereoselective synthesis of desacyl furanmonogones A and B has been achieved. The key steps in this synthesis are (1) an Fe(ClO4)3-mediated oxidative radical cyclization for construction of a cis-fused [5-6]-bicyclic core with a bridged lactone substitute, (2) a phosphorane-mediated rearrangement to convert the cis-fused [5-6]-bicyclic core to the corresponding trans-fused [5-6]-bicyclic core, and (3) a Au-catalyzed cascade reaction for formation of the 4,5-seco-3(2H)-furanone motif.

Abstract:We describe here a synthesis of (4S)-2-(acetoxymethyl)-4-(tert-butyldiphenylsilyloxy)-2-cyclopenten-1-one 1 from l-malic acid in seven steps via an intramolecular aldolization–dehydration cyclization reaction of the acyclic 1,6-dialdehyde 10. The conditions of the intramolecular aldolization–dehydration cyclization reaction were also optimized.

Abstract:A strategy of C3/C4 and C5/C4 bis-C–H functionalization of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is presented. This task has been accomplished by the initial iridium-catalyzed C–H borylation of furfural, equipped with an appropriate imine function. Depending on the nature of the ligand employed, the borylation takes place selectively at C3 or C5, the products serving in turn as partners in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings. After aldehyde function regeneration, some of the resulting heterobiaryl compounds underwent a, C3- or C5-directed, C4-selective Pd-catalyzed Fujiwara-Moritani olefination. These hitherto unknown serial C3/C4 and C5/C4 bis C–H functionalization strategies allow the straightforward conversion of the bio-sourced platform molecules furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into tri- and tetra-substituted furaldehyde derivatives

Abstract:2-(Methylthio)-1,4-diaryl-2-butene-1,4-dione (3) are prepared from readily available aryl methyl ketones in the presence of copper(II) oxide, iodine, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The success of the cross-coupling reaction of 4-chloroacetophenone with 2-acetylthiophene confirms a proposed self-sorting tandem reaction mechanism. Both Z- and E-isomers of compound 3 are readily converted into the corresponding 3-methylthio 2,5-diaryl furan 7 in good yield through a domino process involving the reduction of the double bond followed by the Paal-Knorr furan synthesis. Meanwhile, 4-bromo-3-methylthio 2,5-diaryl furan 10 is obtained either by the treatment of furan 7 with molecular bromine or by the treatment of diketone 3 with 30% hydrogen bromide in acetic acid solution in one pot. Removal of the methylthio group is accomplished by the treatment of 7 with Raney Ni in ethanol, which affords the diaryl-substituted furan 11 in excellent isolated yield. Selective reduction of the double bond of compound 3 leads to the formation of the saturated 1,4-diketone 13, which is easily converted to the corresponding 3-methylthio-2,5-diaryl-substituted pyrrole 14 and thiophene 15 via the Paal-Knorr cyclization reaction.

Abstract:Objective To simplify the synthesis of 3-aryl-2,2-disubtituted dihydrobenzofurans.Methods It involves a selective cross McMurry reaction coupling of a 2-hydroxyphenyl-aryl-methanone with an aldehyde as a pivotal step and a sequential acid-promoted cyclization of the resulting ortho-vinylphenols.Results The structure of 3-aryl-2,2-disubtituted dihydrobenzofurans was confirmed by IR,1H-NMR,13C-NMR and HRMS(EI).An array of 3-aryl-2,2-disubtituted dihydrobenzofurans were conveniently and efficiently obtained with two-step total yields of 89%~98%.Conclusion The advantages of this synthetic approach are as follows: the reagents are readily available,the conditions are mild and the operations are simple,and the preparations are suitable for scale-up.

Abstract:An electron-donating heteroatom substituent at position-2 of a furan promotes regiospecific opening of the 7-oxa bridge of the Diels-Alder cycloadduct with hexafluoro-2-butyne, producing a 4-heterosubstituted 2,3-di(trifluoromethyl)phenol building block in a single step. The phenol and heteroatom substituent are easily transformed to the corresponding iodide or triflate that readily undergoes Heck, Suzuki, and Stille reactions to install a variety of substituents in high yields. This methodology provides a facile and general synthesis of 1,4-disubsituted 2, 3-di(trifluoromethyl)benzenes.

Abstract:2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF) is a significant biomass-derived compound with diverse applications in novel furan-based materials, fragrances, fuel additives, and drug synthesis. A pivotal challenge in DFF synthesis is developing a method to produce DFF under mild conditions using sustainable feedstocks. In this study, an affordable 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPOL)- assisted Cu(OAc)2 catalytic system for aerobic oxidation reaction of HMF to DFF in liquid sunlight methanol solvent was developed. The effects of parameters such as metal species, catalyst amount, solvent species, ligand structure, and reaction temperature were systematically investigated. The evolution of product distribution in the reaction solution at various times was monitored and analyzed using 1H-NMR spectroscopy. FT-IR and ESI-MS characterizations were employed to integrate experimental findings and elucidate the reaction mechanism. The highest DFF yield of 96% and complete conversion of HMF were obtained. Furthermore, a total DFF yield of 68.6% was achieved from fructose using a two-steps method, demonstrating the potential for scalable production. The establishment of this catalytic system presents a novel approach for the selective preparation of DFF from sustainable feedstocks.

Abstract:BF3·OEt2-mediated one-pot formal (4 + 2) and (5 + 2) stereocontrolled cycloaddition of 4-alkenols 3 and 4 with veratrol affords the respective substituted tetralins 5 and benzosuberans 6 in good yields. The cascade protocol combines a facile double Friedel-Crafts benzannulation of 4-alkenols 3 and 4 (having two electrophilic sites) and veratrol (7a) (having two nucleophilic sites). A plausible mechanism was studied and proposed.
