On the Solar Eclipse Records from the Han Dynasty and Their Application to the Analysis of the Precison of the Systems of Calendrical Astronomy of the Han Dynasty

Abstract:On the basis of previous works and computer-aided analysis,the reliability of the records of solar eclipses from the Western and the Eastern Han dynasties is examined textu- ally and astronomically.Many mistakes are discovered in the records from such books as Han- shu,Hou Hanshu,Qian Hanji,Hou Hanfi,Tongzhi,Shishi Zhenggang and Quan Shanggu Sandai Qinhan Sanguo Liuchao Wen.More exactly,about three fifths of these records contain various kinds of mistakes.Most of the mistakes can be revised with certainty since the reasons for their erroneousness can be traced,while a few other mistakes are very difficult to be accoun- ted for.As far as the recording period is concerned,it's obvious that the solar eclipse records in official histories such as Shiji and Hanshu have a higher percentage of errors in the earlier peri- od of the Western Han dynasty,while the records during the remaining of the Western Han and all of the Eastern Han periods are of better integrality and reliability.In the period when Sifenli was promulgated in the Eastern Han dynasty,the observation sites of solar eclipses spread over nearly the entire territory of the dynasty.Therefore,the observation and documentation of solar eclipses in this period were very systematic.However,evidence also has been found that some- times the normal documentation process of the solar eclipse in this period could be spoiled by certain socio-political events.This can be seen from the example of the absence of the record from the official history about solar eclipse on 25 August 146,when the child emperor Zhidi was just murdered and another child emperor Huandi was put into the throne and the court was actually under the control of a queen from behind the screen.In spite of the interference of so- cio-political affairs,the observation and documentation of solar eclipse still played a key role in the development of calendrical astronomy of the time.Records of solar eclipses were used by calendar-makers of the period in checking the precision of competing systems of calendrical as- tronomy in syzygy calculation.Following the approach of these astronomers,the precision of the two officially promulgated systems of calendrical astronomy,i.e.Santongli and Sifenli,in syzy- gy calculation is examined in this paper against the reliable eclipse records.It is discovered that the calculated results done with Santongli truly lagged behind the actual syzygies,and the case became worsened in the early Eastern Han dynasty.The problem did not receive a perma- nent solution with the promulgation of the Sifenli because the length of the lunar month did not get a substantial improvement.
