Abstract:The reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of isopropanol and propylene to acetone over the 10% V2O5/TiO2 catalyst were modeled according to the results of FTIR, microcalorimetric adsorption and microreactor kinetics. The two reaction mechanisms are closely correlated since isopropanol can be taken as the intermediate for the oxidation of propylene to acetone. The simulations revealed how the reaction conditions affect surface coverages that in turn influence the reaction activities. The abstraction of α-H from the surface isopropoxy groups by the oxidation sites (V5+–O) is the rate-limiting step for the oxidative dehydrogenation of isopropanol to acetone, while the adsorption of propylene on surface Brönsted acid sites (V–OH) to form the surface isopropoxy groups is the rate-limiting step for the selective oxidation of propylene to acetone. Both Brönsted acid sites and oxidation sites (V5+–O) are required for the conversion of propylene to acetone. Thus, one way to promote the rate of propylene adsorption in order to enhance the rate of propylene conversion to acetone may be to increase the strength of the Brönsted acid sites by adding some other acidic materials. The oxygen deficient vanadium sites were found to promote the dissociative adsorption of isopropanol to form the surface isopropoxy groups and the adsorption of water to form the surface Brönsted acid sites (V–OH) needed for the adsorption of propylene.
Microcalorimetric Adsorption Characterizations of Supported Vanadia Catalysts for the Selective Oxidation of Propylene to Acetone

Abstract:Structural characterizations and chemisorption of O2 revealed that vanadium species in our 10% V2O5/TiO2 and 10% V2O5/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were highly dispersed polyvanadates, while that in the 10% V2O5/SiO2 was small-crystalline V2O5. Although the 10% V2O5/H–ZSM-5 exhibits strong Brønsted acidity that favors the adsorption of propylene, the poorly dispersed vanadium species makes it a poor catalyst for the conversion of propylene to acetone. The key factors determining the activity of the reaction are the number and strength of Brønsted acid sites of V–OH groups and the oxidation ability of oxidized vanadium species in the catalysts. The V2O5/TiO2 catalyst exhibits the strongest Brønsted acidity of V–OH groups in the catalysts studied, and therefore it adsorbs propylene and shows the high activity for the conversion of propylene to acetone. In fact, Fourier transform infrared indicates that the adsorption of propylene on the V2O5/TiO2 catalyst at room temperature leads to the formation of surface isopropoxy groups and adsorbed acetone. Both the 10% V2O5/γ-Al2O3 and 10% V2O5/SiO2 catalysts possess weak Brønsted acidity of V–OH groups and therefore exhibit the low activity for the conversion of propylene to acetone. Microcalorimetric adsorption of reactants and products on the catalysts provides the information about the surface bonding strengths that may be used for the microkinetic analysis of the corresponding surface reactions. The initial heat for water adsorption on the V2O5/TiO2 catalyst is lower than 90 kJ/mol, indicating that water is reversibly adsorbed at temperatures higher than 360 K. The heat of adsorption of acetone on the reduced V2O5/TiO2 catalyst is about 100 kJ/mol, which can be used to estimate the activation energy for desorption of acetone from the catalyst. O2 adsorption on the reduced catalysts produces high heat, indicating that the reoxidation of reduced vanadium species by O2 is an irreversible reaction step.

Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to make propylene oxide catalyzed by μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins is investigated.The results indicate that the reaction temperature,reaction time,molar ratio of acraldehyde to propylene,and concentration and type of catalysts have significant effects on the reaction.The appropriate reaction conditions are as follows:100℃,1.5 h,500 rpm for stirring velocity,n (acraldehyde) ∶n (propylene)=0.625,catalyst concentration at 9.72×10-5mol％.The central metal and substituent group ofμ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins also have influence on catalytic activity.The catalytic activity order of different substituent group of μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins are —OCH3 ＞—H＞—F.With different central metal,the catalytic activity order are Fe＞Cu.Of which the best catalytic result is given by [T(p-OCH3) PPFe] 2 O,with the yield,selectivity and conversion rate being 27.31％,93.95％ and 29.06％ respectively.
Characterization and catalytic performance of supported molybdophosphoric acid catalysts for the oxidation of propylene to acetone

Abstract:The oxidation of propylene to acetone was studied over supported molybdophosphoric acid catalysts at 463K in the presence of water. Raman spectroscopy revealed that molybdophosphoric acid retained its Keggin structure when supported on SiO2 while it decomposed to MoO3 when supported on γ-Al2O3. Microcalorimetric adsorption of NH3 showed that the H3PMo12O40/SiO2 catalyst exhibited strong acidity (152kJ/mol) and the MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst prepared from molybdophosphoric acid displayed fairly strong acidity (137kJ/mol). FTIR showed that both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites were present on the surface of the two catalysts. Since the reaction can be taken as the coupling of the hydration of propylene and the oxydehydrogenation of propanol, both acid and redox sites are needed to form the active catalysts. However, the H3PMo12O40/SiO2 catalyst showed almost no activity while the MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited fairly good activity. Thus, the hydration of propylene may not be rate-limiting for the reaction on these catalysts. Microcalorimetric adsorption of propylene and acetone demonstrated that adsorption of propylene and desorption of acetone might not be rate-limiting, either. It can be concluded that the abstraction of the α-H of surface isopropoxy groups may be the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODP) on the anatase supported vanadia catalysts (VOx/TiO2) have been investigated using periodic DFT calculations. Free energy profiles indicate that the first C-H activation step is the rate-determining (RD) step and the transition state (TS) of the propene formation step is the RD-TS. ODP activity can be tuned by vanadia dispersion and support surface via the modification of the electronic structure of the active oxygen sites. For the RD step, on both dimer VOx/TiO2 catalysts terminal sites have higher activity. On monomer VOx/TiO2 (1 0 0) terminal and interface sites exhibit similar activity, while on monomer VOx/TiO2 (0 0 1) interface sites have higher activity. With increasing vanadia loading, the formation of propene changes from propyl radical mechanism to a concerted propoxide one. The results suggest that TiO2 (1 0 0) is a better support surface. Terminal and interface oxygen sites act cooperatively as the first and second C-H bond activation centers, respectively. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane to propene over a vanadium-based catalyst suffers from side reactions of further and complete oxidations of propene and other intermediates, which limit the yield of propene. These further oxidation reactions are also referred to as deep oxidation reactions of ODH. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the deep oxidation reactions in the ODH of propane over the V2O5(001) surface using the periodic density functional theory method. It is shown that the main source of deep oxidation byproducts originates from the dehydrogenation reaction of the surface intermediate isopropoxide, leading to acetone and the following deep oxidation reactions of acetone and propene. Thorough oxidation of acetone is more difficult than that of propene. Noticeably, formation of acetone and deep oxidation of acetone and propene are only feasible on the terminal oxygen site O(1) of the V2O5(001) surface. The bridging site O(2) has similar reactivity for propene formation but is inert for the side reactions, showing its superiority for selectivity of propane ODH.

Abstract:We prepare alpha-Fe2O3 nanosheet supported 0.38, 0.81, and 1.36 wt% Au (average particle size = 4.0 nm) nanocatalysts, and investigate their performance and mechanism for the selective catalytic oxidation of isopropanol to acetone. In the presence of 1.2 vol% isopropanol and 40 vol% O-2, 1.36 wt% Au/alpha-Fe2O3 exhibits excellent catalytic performance, due to its moderate acidic sites and better redox properties, with acetone selectivity and yield being as high as 99% and 95% at 220 degrees C, respectively. In addition to acetone, little propylene, acetic acid, acetaldehyde, methyl vinyl ketone, 2-butanone, isopropyl ether, isopropyl acetate, 3-penten-2-one, isopropyl acrylate, isopropyl propionate, and 2, 4-dimethylfuran are detected. The possible reaction mechanism is proposed for the selective catalytic oxidation of isopropanol to acetone over the present catalysts. We believe the present selective catalytic oxidation method, rather than the traditional complete catalytic oxidation method, provides an alternative and economic method for VOCs emissions control.

Abstract:The understanding of reaction mechanisms of supported metal oxide catalysts has significantly increased over the last years due to new methods being applied. This increased knowledge allows to develop approaches towards catalytic materials for reactions with low selectivities by rational design, such as the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane, which is of great technical importance. Vanadia (VOx) supported on reducible oxides (TiO2, CeO2, etc.) has shown promising catalytic properties in propane ODH. In this study, we followed a rational-design approach employing atomic layer deposition (ALD) to synthesize a VOx/TiOx/CeO2 catalyst with superior selectivity, by combining favourable properties of the individual catalysts (VOx/TiO2, VOx/CeO2). By applying multiple spectroscopies, including multi-wavelength Raman, UV-Vis, DRIFT, and XP spectroscopy as well as XRD, we were able to identify the functions of each oxide and develop a mechanistic picture. The increased selectivity is the result of distinct interactions between the oxides that slow down the oxygen dynamics in the catalyst and favour reaction pathways beneficial to propylene formation. Our findings highlight the use of rational design to develop improved catalysts based on previously established mechanistic knowledge.

Abstract:The TiO2(anatase)-supported vanadia catalyst with different vanadia loadings has been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and NH3 microcalorimetric adsorption. XRD and Raman spectroscopy show that a monolayer coverage of vanadia is formed over the 8% V2O5/TiO2 catalyst. TPR profiles reveal that the monolayer dispersed vanadia species are easier to be reduced than the polymeric and crystalline species formed when the vanadia loading exceeds the monolayer coverage. Microcalorimetric adsorption of NH3 indicates that the acidity of the V2O5/TiO2 catalyst decreases with the increase in V2O5 loading up to the monolayer coverage and remains unchanged above the monolayer coverage. The reaction behavior of the V2O5/TiO2 catalyst in the dehydrogenation and dehydration of isopropanol is correlated with their surface properties. The V2O5/TiO2 catalyst exhibits mainly redox properties when the reaction is carried out at the presence of O-2. The selectivity for acetone is greater than 95%, which is almost independent of the vanadia loading. When the reaction is carried out in N-2 (without O-2) the catalyst shows both acidity and redox properties. In this case, the selectivity for acetone increases and the selectivity for propylene decreases with increasing vanadia loading. Over the 10% V2O5/TiO2 catalyst, the selectivity for acetone is almost equal to the selectivity for propylene. As the surface acidity is concerned, the results of the isopropanol dehydrogenation and dehydration correlate well with those of the microcalorimetric adsorption of NH3 This indicates that the reaction can be used as a proper probe reaction for the characterization of the surface acidity and redox properties of metal oxide catalysts.
Highly Selective Activation of C–H Bond and Inhibition of C–C Bond Cleavage by Tuning Strong Oxidative Pd Sites

Abstract:Improving the product selectivity meanwhile restraining deep oxidation still remains a great challenge over the supported Pd-based catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a universal strategy where the surface strong oxidative Pd sites are partially covered by the transition metal (e. g., Cu, Co, Ni, and Mn) oxide through thermal treatment of alloys. It could effectively inhibit the deep oxidation of isopropanol and achieve the ultrahigh selectivity (>98%) to the target product acetone in a wide temperature range of 50-200 °C, even at 150-200 °C with almost 100% isopropanol conversion over PdCu1.2/Al2O3, while an obvious decline in acetone selectivity is observed from 150 °C over Pd/Al2O3. Furthermore, it greatly improves the low-temperature catalytic activity (acetone formation rate at 110 °C over PdCu1.2/Al2O3, 34.1 times higher than that over Pd/Al2O3). The decrease of surface Pd site exposure weakens the cleavage for the C-C bond, while the introduction of proper CuO shifts the d-band center (εd) of Pd upward and strengthens the adsorption and activation of reactants, providing more reactive oxygen species, especially the key super oxygen species (O2-) for selective oxidation, and significantly reducing the barrier of O-H and β-C-H bond scission. The molecular-level understanding of the C-H and C-C bond scission mechanism will guide the regulation of strong oxidative noble metal sites with relatively inert metal oxide for the other selective catalytic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:The gas-phase acetone hydrogenation to isopropanol is an environmentally benign process relevant to chemical, energy and medical fields, but the catalysts qualified at low temperature and pressure remain challenging. Herein, we show the intensified gas-phase hydrogenation of acetone to isopropanol at metal-oxide interface. The Pt/CeO2 catalyst with highly active and stable Pt-CeO2 interface delivers 92 % acetone conversion with 99 % isopropanol selectivity at 80 °C, weight hourly space velocity of 10 h−1, H2/acetone molar ratio of 2, and 0.1 MPa, and its catalytic performance is preserved during a single-running test of 200 h. A series of electron microscopic, thermal, and spectroscopic analyses testify that acetone could be efficiently adsorbed on oxygen vacancy at Pt-CeO2 interface. The H atoms dissociated by Pt spill over to the interface to hydrogenate the chemically-adsorbed acetone thereon to form isopropanol. Inspired by such observation, the Pt-CeO2 interface was extended to other metal-oxide interfaces (metal: Pt and Ni; oxide: CeO2, TiO2, ZrO2 and Fe3O4), all exhibiting excellent catalytic performance. For example, the Ni/CeO2 could offer 91 % acetone conversion and 99 % isopropanol selectivity, identical to that of Pt/CeO2 under the same conditions. This work particularly investigated the acetone adsorption at the metal-oxide interface, establishing the foundation for rational design of high cost performance catalysts for aldehydes/ketones hydrogenation and other reactions.

V–O–Ag Linkages in VAgO x Mixed Oxides for the Selective Oxidation of p -Xylene to p -Methyl Benzaldehyde

Abstract:Selective oxidation of alkanes/aromatics to desirable oxygenated molecules offers a pathway toward an efficient chemical process. However, high selectivity is hampered due to the overoxidation reaction. Here, we show that α-Al2O3-supported VAgO x mixed oxides can selectively catalyze the oxidation of p-xylene to p-methyl benzaldehyde with an up to 92% selectivity, as compared to 57% on VO x /α-Al2O3, at a 1% conversion and 295 °C. Even at a higher conversion (∼6%) via increasing the residual time, the aimed selectivity on the optimized mixed oxides is about 2 times that of their counterpart, i.e., 73% vs 35%. A combination of kinetic investigation and temperature-programmed surface reaction experiments indicates that the enhanced selectivity on VAgO x mixed oxides is attributed to the terminated parallel combustion reaction (forming CO2) via weakening the adsorption strength between aromatics and the catalyst. Furthermore, the linear correlation between the Raman intensity and the formation rate of products, obtained in operando Raman experiments, suggests that the V–O–Ag linkages in VAgO x /α-Al2O3 are active sites for selective oxidation of p-xylene, as further verified by their complete regeneration under an O2 atmosphere after consumed by p-xylene. This work provides spectroscopic evidence for understanding active sites on mixed oxide catalysts and supports the importance of modulating the chemistry of lattice oxygen for selective oxidation reactions.

Abstract:The state and reactivity of surface oxygen species of mesoporous silica-supported vanadium oxide catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane have been investigated by microreactor tests combined with in-situ electron spin resonance, temperature-programmed surface reaction, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The pore diameter of the SBA-15, MCM-41, and silica gel supports exert great influences on the dispersion state of VOx species and the catalytic properties of the supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The SBA-15-supported vanadium oxide catalyst has the highest selectivity for propylene because of its larger pore diameter and higher surface area. Surface lattice oxygen species of the VOx/SBA-15 catalyst are main active species for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene. Highly dispersed VOx species have high catalytic reactivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. CO2 can regenerate the lattice oxygen species of supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The high propylene selectivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 on supported vanadium oxide catalysts is related to weaker oxidizing effect of CO2, which inhibits the direct C3H8 oxidation and the consecutive oxidation of C3H6 to COx.
Propylene Production via Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane with Carbon Dioxide over Composite MxOy-TiO2 Catalysts

Abstract:The CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODP) was investigated over titania based composite metal oxides, 10% MxOy-TiO2 (M: Zr, Ce, Ca, Cr, Ga). It was found that the surface basicity of composite metal oxides was significantly higher than that of bare TiO2 and varied in a manner which depended strongly on the nature of the MxOy modifier. The addition of metal oxides on the TiO2 surface resulted in a significant improvement of catalytic performance induced by a synergetic interaction between MxOy and TiO2 support. Propane conversion and propylene yield were strongly influenced by the nature of the metal oxide additive and were found to be superior for the Cr2O3-TiO2 and Ga2O3-TiO2 catalysts characterized by moderate basicity. The reducibility of the latter catalysts was significantly increased, contributing to the improved catalytic performance. This was also the case for the surface acidity of Ga2O3-TiO2 which was found to be higher compared with Cr2O3-TiO2 and TiO2. A general trend was observed whereby catalytic performance increased significantly with decreasing the primary crystallite size of TiO2. DRIFTS studies conducted under reaction conditions showed that the adsorption/activation of CO2 was favored on the surface of composite metal oxides. This may be induced by the improved surface basicity observed with the MxOy addition on the TiO2 surface. The Ga2O3 containing sample exhibited sufficient stability for about 30 h on stream, indicating that it is suitable for the production of propylene through ODP with CO2 reaction.

Here, we capitalized ethane as the feedstock and developed ZSM-5-supported PdO nanoparticles for the direct oxidation of ethane to acetaldehyde by utilizing O2 and CO. PdO nanoparticles clearly demonstrate effectively activity and prevent the further deep oxidation of acetaldehyde.

Abstract:The direct oxidation of propane to acrylic acid has become a hot spot in catalytic oxidation of light alkanes in recent years. The MoVTe ( Sb) NbO mixed metal oxide catalysts are the most important catalysts for this reaction. This article intends to review recent progress in preparation methodologies and in understanding vital crystalline structures which are closely related to catalytic performance. The latest knowledge on the functions of the constituent elements in the catalysts is summarized in terms of the reaction pathways of propane oxidation. It is recognized that modification of particle size and morphology, phase composition and structure, surface acidity and redox property of catalyst are critical to achieve superb catalyst performance and stability.

Abstract:Vanadia-containing mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts were prepared and characterized for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane. It is demonstrated that the vanadia-supported SBA-15 catalysts exhibit a much higher catalytic activity than those reported in the literature obtained over vanadium-supported mesoporous MCM-41 catalysts in the ODH of propane. The high catalytic performance of the mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts is attributed to the particularly large pore diameters and low surface acidity.
