Study of Mental Health Status of AIDS Affected Children in Central China

Abstract:Objective To evaluate mental health status of AIDS-affected children living in central China and provide information for improving their psychological conditions.Methods Self-rating SCL-90 scale was used for questionnaire survey,and SAS8.0 software was applied for data analysis.Results SCL-90 scores in AIDS orphans(141.82±39.36)were higher than in AIDS affected children with single parent(137.37±33.32)and in those living with two parents(161.36±41.17).SCL-90 scores in AIDS affected girls living with single parent(147.07±34.75)were higher than in boys with similar family condition(119.27±21.50).A total of 120 students of secondary schools affected with AIDS were surveyed,of whom 33 lost both parents,43 were living with single parent and 44 were living with both parents.Conclusion AIDS-affected children have a high level of psychological stress,and psychological interventions should be provided based on their different genders and family status.
