Knowledge and Attitude Towards Adolescence and STD/AIDS in Middle School Students' Parents in Xinxiang

Abstract:Objective To investigate parents' knowledge and attitude towards adolescence and STD/AIDS,and to provide scientific basis for family education. Methods Four hundred and forty-four students' parents from 4 middle schools were sampled and their knowledge and attitude towards adolescence and STD/AIDS were investigated by questionnaires. Results The correct answer rate about AIDS was 62.8%-95.4%.Among 25 related questions,there were only 15 ones whose rates of awareness were above 70%. And 63.8%-94.5% of the parents could correctly answer the questions about adolescence. No significant differences were found between fathers and mothers in the knowledge about AIDS and adolescence. The parents who had only one child got higher marks than the ones who have two; the parents who graduated from college or university got higher marks than the ones with lower education, the differences were significant. About 79.3% parents objected to the boys' sexual intercourse before marriage, 82.7% parents objected to the girls' sexual intercourse before marriage; 19.9% parents permitted their children to study with AIDS patients or HIV infectors in the same class, 12.4% parents believed HIV infection had no relationship with adolescents, 22.3% parents considered AIDS was near to the parents. The leading sources for parents' AIDS knowledge were books and magazines (55.5%), television program and broadcast (22.8%) and medical experts (13.2%). Conclusion Parents should develop their knowledge of AIDS and adolescence health. Their attitudes towards STD/AIDS should be changed also.
