Abstract:Objeetive To evaluate the therapeutic effect and complications of stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) for outlet obstructive constipation (OOC ). Methods The data of 214 patients who had undergone STARR for OOC from 2006 to 2009 were collected over a 38 months follow upat the Department of Colorectal Surgery,First People's Hospital of Chenzhou. Results Operations were successful in all patients. One week after operation, functional outcome was positive in 81.7% of the patients (excellent in 41.5%,good in 40.2%),fair in 17.8%,and no response in one patient. Six months after operation,136 patients were followed up. Functional outcome was positive for 80.1% of the patients (excellent in 33.1%,good in 47.1%),fair in 19.1%,and no response in one patient. Hemorrhage, incontinence, cavitas pelvis and retroperitoneal infection or rectovaginal fistula did not appear. Conclusions STARR is a safe and effective treatment for OOC caused by rectal intussusception and rectocele. Comparing with traditional surgery,STARR has such advantages as short hospital stay, short operative time, less complications and fast recovery.
