Abstract:A Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) formed on a curved surface with a distinct topology has been a hot topic of intense research, in search of new phenomena in quantum physics as well as for its possible application in quantum computing. In addition to the study of a spherical-shell-shaped BEC, we studied the formation of a cylindrical-shell-shaped harmonically-trapped dipolar BEC of $^{164}$Dy atoms theoretically using an improved mean-field model including a Lee-Huang-Yang-type interaction, meant to stop a collapse at high atom density. To test the robustness of the cylindrical-shell-shaped BEC, here we study its expansion in the same model. We find that as the harmonic trap in the $x$ and $y$ directions are removed, maintaining the axial trap, the cylindrical-shell-shaped BEC expands in the $x$-$y$ plane without deformation, maintaining its shell-shaped structure. After an adequate radial expansion, the axial trap can be relaxed for a desired axial expansion of the cylindrical-shell-shaped BEC allowing its observation.

Abstract:We discuss in detail properties of trapped atomic condensates with anisotropic dipole interactions. A practical procedure for constructing anisotropic low-energy pseudopotentials is proposed anti justified by the agreement with results of numerical multichannel calculations. The time dependent variational method is adapted to reveal several interesting features observed in numerical solutions of condensate wave function. Collective low-energy shape oscillations and their stability inside electric fields are investigated. Our results shed new light into macroscopic coherence properties of interacting quantum degenerate atomic gases.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. The dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as the oscillation amplitude. The anharmonic properties beyond the effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as the amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at a place with a divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate a unique feature of the spin-orbit coupled system predicted by a sum-rule approach, stating that spin polarization susceptibility-a static physical quantity-can be measured via the dynamics of dipole oscillation. The divergence of polarization susceptibility is observed at the quantum phase transition that separates the magnetic nonzero-momentum condensate from the nonmagnetic zero-momentum phase. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results provides a benchmark for recently developed theoretical approaches.

Abstract:We study ground-state properties of trapped atomic condensates with electric-field-induced dipole-dipole interactions. A rigorous method for constructing the pseudopotential in the spirit of ladder approximation is developed for general nonspherical (polarized) particles interacting anisotropically. We discuss interesting features not previously considered for currently available alkali-metal condensates. In addition, to provide a quantitative assessment for controlling atomic interactions with electric fields, our investigation may also shed a different light into the macroscopic coherence properties of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of dilute interacting atoms.

Mini droplet, mega droplet and stripe formation in a dipolar condensate

Abstract:We demonstrate mini droplet, mega droplet and stripe formation in a dipolar 164Dy condensate, using an improved mean-field model including a Lee-Huang-Yang-type interaction, employing a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) trap in a way distinct from that in the pioneering experiment, M. A. Norcia et. al., Nature 596, 357 (2021), where the polarization z direction was taken to be perpendicular to the quasi-2D x-y plane. In the present study we take the polarization z direction in the quasi-2D x-z plane. Employing the same trapping frequencies as in the experiment, and interchanging the frequencies along the y and z directions, we find the formation of mini droplets for number of atoms N as small as N = 1000. With the increase of number of atoms, a spatially-periodic supersolid-like one-dimensional array of mega droplets containing 50000 to 200000 atoms are formed along the x direction in the x-y plane. These mega droplets are elongated along the polarization z direction, consequently, the spatially periodic arrangement of droplets appears as a stripe pattern in the x-z plane. To establish the supersolidity of the droplets we demonstrate continued dipole-mode and scissors-mode oscillations of the droplet-lattice pattern. The main findings of the present study can be tested experimentally with the present know-how.

Abstract:We study the merging and splitting of quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with strong dipolar interactions. We observe that if the dipoles have a non-zero component in the plane of the condensate, the dynamics of merging or splitting along two orthogonal directions, parallel and perpendicular to the projection of dipoles on the plane of the condensate are different. The anisotropic merging and splitting of the condensate is a manifestation of the anisotropy of the roton-like mode in the dipolar system. The difference in dynamics disappears if the dipoles are oriented at right angles to the plane of the condensate as in this case the Bogoliubov dispersion, despite having roton-like features, is isotropic.

Abstract:We study the effect of inter-condensate dipole-dipole interactions in a setup consisting of physically disconnected, single-species dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. In particular, making use of the long-range and anisotropic nature of dipole-dipole interactions, we show that the density of a {\em target} dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate can be axially confined and engineered using a trapped {\em control} dipolar condensate. Increasing the number of control condensates leads to exotic ground state structures, including periodic patterns in the target condensate. The latter leads to a structural transition between single and double-peaked structures with coherence between the peaks controlled via the separation between the control condensates.

Abstract:We study the spin distribution and macroscopic entanglement in spinor condensates confined in an anisotropic potential under external magnetic fields. Different types of magnetic phases can be reached by tuning the magnetic dipolar interaction strength by modifying the trapping geometry. We investigate the atom-number fluctuations of the ground state and show that the different internal hyperfine states exhibit super-Poissonian, Poissonian, and sub-Poissonian distributions with different trapping geometries and strengths of the external magnetic field. We also propose a scheme to create a macroscopic maximally entangled spin state by slowly sweeping the external magnetic field.

Abstract:It remains a challenge to independently manipulate the magnetic dipolar and the spin-exchange interactions, which are entangled in many spin systems, particularly in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. For this purpose, we put forward a sequence of rf pulses and the periodic dynamical decoupling sequence of optical Feshbach resonance pulses to control the dipolar and the spin-exchange interactions, respectively. Our analytic results and the numerical simulations demonstrate that either of the two interactions can be suppressed to make the other dominate the spin dynamics; furthermore, both of the interactions can be simultaneously suppressed to realize spinor-condensate-based magnetometers with a higher sensitivity. This manipulation method may find its wide applications in magnetic resonance and spintronics.

Abstract:We study the phase separation of a Bose-Einstein condensate system with the conversion of one-species bosonic atoms into molecules via Feshbach resonance. Adopting the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we plot the phase diagrams of the system in two different parameter spaces for different atom-molecule interactions. In the presence of an isotropic trap, the density profiles in spatial space with fixed total number of atoms are also plotted. The clear phase separation in spatial space enables one to determine the location of atoms in the trap, which may be used as a possible experimental probe method.

Abstract:The path integral Monte Carlo method is used to simulate dilute trapped Bose gases and to investigate the equilibrium properties at finite temperatures. The quantum particles have a long-range dipole-dipole interaction and a short-range s-wave interaction. Using an anisotropic pseudopotential for the long-range dipolar interaction and a hard-sphere potential for the short-range s-wave interaction, we calculate the energetics and structural properties as a function of temperature and the number of particles. Also, in order to determine the effects of dipole-dipole forces and the influence of the trapping field on the dipolar condensate, we use two cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinements (a cigar-shaped trap and a disk-shaped trap). We find that the net effect of dipole-dipole interactions is governed by the trapping geometry. For a cigar-shaped trap, the net contribution of dipolar interactions is attractive and the shrinking of the density profiles is observed. For a disk-shaped trap, the net effect of long-range dipolar forces is repulsive and the density profiles expand.

Abstract:We study the semiclassical dynamics of a spinor condensate with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction included. The time evolution of the population imbalance and the relative phase among different spin components depends greatly on the relative strength of interactions as well as on the initial conditions. The interplay of spin exchange and dipole-dipole interaction makes it possible to manipulate the atomic population on different components, leading to the phenomena of spontaneous magnetization and Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping. Simple estimate demonstrates that these effects are accessible and controllable by modifying the geometry of the trapping potential.

Abstract:We study the effects of dipole–dipole interactions on the diffusion of an expanding atomic Bose–Einstein condensate with tunable s -wave interactions in three-dimensional disorder potentials. First-order correction due to local and nonlocal nonlinearities to the average atomic density is analytically calculated in the long expanding time limit using a perturbative theory. It is found that the diffusion coefficient exhibits a stronger anisotropy dependence due to the dipolar interactions. We show that the intriguing interplay of dipolar and nondipolar interactions and disorder potential may affect the diffusive expansion.

Expansion dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a synthetic magnetic field

Abstract:We investigate the expansion dynamics of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates subjected to a synthetic magnetic field, after their release from an external harmonic trap. Our findings reveal that the condensate experiences a spin-dependent rotation and separation due to the rigid-like rotational velocity field, which leads to a spin density deflection. The deflection angle reaches a peak at a time that is inversely related to the frequency of the harmonic trap. When the detuning gradient is below a critical value for vortex nucleation, our analytical results derived from a spinor hydrodynamic theory align closely with numerical results using the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Beyond this critical value, we also numerically simulated the expansion dynamics of the condensates containing vortices with negative circulation. Our findings highlight the pivotal role of the rigid-like rotational velocity field on the dynamics of the condensate and may stimulate further experimental investigations into the rich superfluid dynamics induced by synthetic magnetic fields.

Abstract:Recent experimental breakthroughs in trapping, cooling and controlling ultracold gases of polar molecules, magnetic and Rydberg atoms have paved the way toward the investigation of highly tunable quantum systems, where anisotropic, long-range dipolar interactions play a prominent role at the many-body level. In this article we review recent theoretical studies concerning the physics of such systems. Starting from a general discussion on interaction design techniques and microscopic Hamiltonians, we provide a summary of recent work focused on many-body properties of dipolar systems, including: weakly interacting Bose gases, weakly interacting Fermi gases, multilayer systems, strongly interacting dipolar gases and dipolar gases in 1D and quasi-1D geometries. Within each of these topics, purely dipolar effects and connections with experimental realizations are emphasized.

Abstract:Recently, effects of Feshbach resonances in atom-atom interactions were observed by varying the external magnetic field of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We point out that the quasi-bound molecules created in the intermediate state of the resonance can form a second, molecular condensate. The many-body state of the system is then a hybrid atomic/molecular condensate with inter-condensate tunneling of atom pairs. A sudden variation of the magnetic field results in oscillations of the number of atoms and molecules in their respective condensates, providing a signature of this novel type of quantum tunneling.

Exploring the order parameter symmetry of p-wave Fermi condensates

Abstract:We discuss the time-of-flight expansion of dilute p-wave Fermi condensates on the BEC side of Feshbach resonances, as a way to extract information about the order parameter symmetry for superfluidity. We show that the cloud profile is in general sensitive to the interaction strength between fermions, the magnitude and direction of external magnetic fields, and to the angular momentum projection of the order parameter. In particular, due to the anisotropic nature of p-wave interactions we show that the time-of-flight expansion of a p-wave superfluid is anisotropic even if the superfluid is confined to a completely isotropic trap, unlike the case of Bose or s-wave Fermi condensates, which under the same circumstances expand isotropically. Furthermore, we demonstrate that expanding p-wave superfluids released from axially symmetric traps experience anisotropy inversions, where the aspect ratio between the axial and radial directions change during expansion, while the axial symmetry can also be lost reflecting the spatial anisotropy of the underlying interaction.

Abstract:We derive rigorous one- and two-dimensional mean-field equations for cigar- and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary polarization angle. We show how the dipolar interaction modifies the contact interaction of the strongly confined atoms. In addition, our equations introduce a nonlocal potential, which is anisotropic for pancake-shaped condensates. We propose to observe this anisotropy via measurement of the condensate aspect ratio. We also derive analytically approximate density profiles from our equations. Both the numerical solutions of our reduced mean-field equations and the analytical density profiles agree well with numerical solutions of the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation while being more efficient to compute.
