Abstract:Based on Wittgenstein's philosophical thinking and some related contemporary western thoughts, this paper discusses participation rules in interpreting activity with focus on the relationship between presence and absence.Three major arguments are put forward.Firstly, interpreting is a special language game, where meaning interpreting is fundamental.Secondly, the integral idea of I-Thoudefines the scope of participation in interpreting, namely, delegate, audience, interpreter, interactive utterance and multiplicity of context.Thirdly, the notions of presence and absence represent the integrative I-Thouscope in language game and the two are interdependent. It is concluded that the inherent participants in the disguise of absence should be activated in order to sustain the vigor of the presence and to ensure the success of interpreting communication.
