Application of laparoscopic technique via transumbilical single incision in abdominal surgery

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical value of the laparoscopic technique via transumbilical single incision in abdominal surgery.Methods The clinical data of 43 patients who received transumbilical single incision laparoscopic operations between May 2009 and Nov.2009 in Xinhua Hospital,Shanghai Jiaotong University,were retrospectively analyzed and compared with those of 58 patients who received routine two holes laparoscopic operations during the same period of time.Results All patients in the two groups underwent successful operation and achieved satisfactory recovery,without bleeding,bile leakage,incision infection or other complications.The mean operation time of single incision group was(54.2±23.3)min,significantly longer than that of the routine two hole group([39.4±13.2] min,P<0.05).The mean hospital stays were similar between the two groups([5.9±2.3] vs.[5.2±3.1] d,P>0.05).The incision in single incision group healed well and the scars were difficult to find,with 93%(40/43)patients having a better result than expected.Conclusion The transumbilical laparoscopic operations via single incision is difficult to manage,but it has the advantage of small scars,which are difficult to be noticed.The technique should be used in hospital of its standard while strictly controlling the indications.(Shanghai Med J,2010,33:747-749)
