Abstract:We introduce the ``Sequential Empirical Bayes Method'', an adaptive constrained-curve fitting procedure for extracting reliable priors. These are then used in standard augmented-$\chi^2$ fits on separate data. This better stabilizes fits to lattice QCD overlap-fermion data at very low quark mass where {\it a priori} values are not otherwise known. Lessons learned (including caveats limiting the scope of the method) from studying artificial data are presented. As an illustration, from local-local two-point correlation functions, we obtain masses and spectral weights for ground and first-excited states of the pion, give preliminary fits for the $a_0$ where ghost states (a quenched artifact) must be dealt with, and elaborate on the details of fits of the Roper resonance and $S_{11}(N^{1/2-})$ previously presented elsewhere. The data are from overlap fermions on a quenched $16^3\times 28$ lattice with spatial size $La=3.2 {\rm fm}$ and pion mass as low as $\sim 180 {\rm MeV}$.

Abstract:The determination of low-energy constants from data is an important component of most effective field theory programs, including that of chiral perturbation theory. We propose a novel method based on Bayesian probability theory which allows us to address several shortcomings of the standard approach to parameter extraction. Using a toy-model we argue that the Bayesian approach is ideally suited for the application in effective field theories. We also discuss the application to lattice QCD data.

Abstract:Bayesian inference provides a rigorous framework to encapsulate our knowledge and uncertainty regarding various physical quantities in a well-defined and self-contained manner. Utilising modern tools, such Bayesian models can be constructed with a remarkable flexibility, leaving us totally free to carefully choose which assumption should be strictly enforced and which should on the contrary be relaxed. The practical evaluation of these assumptions, together with the data-driven selection or averaging of models, also appears in a very natural way. In this presentation, I discuss its application in the context of lattice QCD and its common statistical problems. As a concrete illustration, I present a few parametric and non-parametric hierarchical models applied to actual correlator data, from single exponential fits to spectral functions.

Abstract:In this work, we apply black box methods (methods not requiring input) to find excited-state energies. A variety of such methods for lattice QCD were introduced at the 3rd iteration of the numerical workshop series. We first review a selection of approaches that have been used in lattice calculations to determine multiple energy states: multiple correlator fits, the variational method and Bayesian fitting. In the second half, we will focus on a black box method, the multi-effective mass. We demonstrate the approach on anisotropic lattice data, extracting multiple states from single correlators. Without complicated operator construction or specialized fitting programs, the black box method shows good consistency with the traditional approaches.

$ Δ$ baryon spectroscopy in lattice QCD

Abstract:A variational analysis is performed within the framework of lattice QCD to extract the masses of the spin-3/2 positive parity $ \Delta^+ $ baryons, including radial excitations. $2+1$ flavour dynamical gauge-field configurations provided by the PACS-CS collaboration via the ILDG are considered. To improve our interpolator basis, we perform an iterative process of source and sink smearing and solve a generalised eigenvalue problem using the resulting fermion operators. We obtain a clear signal for the ground and first excited states at a light quark mass corresponding to $ m_\pi = 413 $ MeV. Furthermore, we show that one can use the eigenvectors obtained in this method to investigate the nature of these states, allowing us to classify our results as $ 1s $ and $ 2s $ states for the ground and first excited states respectively. Finally, we briefly highlight the method of Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory which can be used to make comparison with quark model expectations.

Abstract:Preliminary results from an extensive lattice calculation of the B, B_c, and \Upsilon spectrum at quenched \beta = 6.0 are presented. The study includes radially and orbitally excited mesons, and baryons containing b quarks. The b quarks are formulated using NRQCD; for light and c quarks, a tadpole-improved clover action is used.

Abstract:We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium DGLAP evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann Transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high $p_T$ charged hadrons, D-mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient $\hat{q}$. To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. The usefulness of this new metric in improving Bayesian model emulation is shown to be highly beneficial for future such analyses.

QCD in the chiral SU(3) limit from baryon masses on Lattice QCD ensembles

Abstract:The baryon masses on CLS ensembles are used to determine the LEC that characterize QCD in the flavor-SU(3) limit with vanishing up, down, and strange quark masses. Here we reevaluate some of the baryon masses on flavor-symmetric ensembles with much-improved statistical precision, in particular for the decuplet states. These additional results then lead to a more significant chiral extrapolation of the Lattice data set to its chiral SU(3) limit. Our results are based on the chiral Lagrangian with baryon octet and decuplet fields considered at the one-loop level. Finite-box and discretization effects of the Lattice data are considered systematically. While in our global fit of the data we insist on large-Nc sum rules for the LEC that enter at N3LO, all other LEC are unconstrained. In particular, we obtain values for the chiral limit of the pion decay constant and the isospin-limit of the quark-mass ratio compatible with the FLAG report.

Bayesian Analysis of $χ$EFT at Leading Order in a Modified Weinberg Power Counting Approach

Abstract:We present a Bayesian analysis of renormalization-group invariant nucleon-nucleon interactions at leading order in chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) with momentum cutoffs in the range 400--4000 MeV. We use history matching to identify relevant regions in the parameter space of low-energy constants (LECs) and subsequently infer the posterior probability density of their values using Markov chain Monte Carlo. All posteriors are conditioned on experimental data for neutron-proton scattering observables and we estimate the $\chi$EFT truncation error in an uncorrelated limit. We do not detect any significant cutoff dependence in the posterior predictive distributions for two-nucleon observables. For all cutoff values we find a multimodal LEC posterior with an insignificant mode harboring a bound $^1{S}_0$ state. The $^3P_0$ and $^3P_2$ phase shifts emerging from the Bayesian analysis are less constrained and typically more repulsive compared to the results of a phase shift optimization. We expect that our inference will impact predictions for nuclei. This work demonstrates how to perform inference in the presence of limit-cycle-like behavior and spurious bound states, and lays the foundation for a Bayesian analysis of renormalization-group invariant $\chi$EFT interactions beyond leading order.

Lattice-Constrained Unitarity Bounds for $\bar B^0 \to π^+ l^- \bar ν_l$ Decays

Abstract:Lattice results, kinematical constraints and QCD dispersion relations are combined for the first time to derive model-independent bounds for QCD form factors and corresponding rates. To take into account the error bars on the lattice results we develop a general formalism which ascribes well-defined statistical properties to these bounds. We concentrate on $\bar B^0 \to \pi^+ l^- \bar\nu_l$ decays because of the relative simplicity of the analytical behavior of the relevant polarization functions and because of their immediate phenomenological relevance. To determine the range of applicability of the dispersive matching required to obtain the bounds, we have evaluated the leading perturbative and non-perturbative QCD corrections to the relevant polarization functions. Despite the lattice results' large error bars and limited kinematical range, the bounds we obtain appear to favor certain parametrizations for the form factors over others. The bounds also enable the determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from the total experimental rate with a theoretical error ranging from 27% to 37%, depending on the assumptions made. The techniques developed here are, in fact, quite general and are not limited to use with lattice results nor to semileptonic $\bar B^0 \to \pi^+ l^- \bar\nu_l$ decays.

Assessing Correlated Truncation Errors in Modern Nucleon-Nucleon Potentials

Abstract:We test the BUQEYE model of correlated effective field theory (EFT) truncation errors on Reinert, Krebs, and Epelbaum's semi-local momentum-space implementation of the chiral EFT ($\chi$EFT) expansion of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential. This Bayesian model hypothesizes that dimensionless coefficient functions extracted from the order-by-order corrections to NN observables can be treated as draws from a Gaussian process (GP). We combine a variety of graphical and statistical diagnostics to assess when predicted observables have a $\chi$EFT convergence pattern consistent with the hypothesized GP statistical model. Our conclusions are: First, the BUQEYE model is generally applicable to the potential investigated here, which enables statistically principled estimates of the impact of higher EFT orders on observables. Second, parameters defining the extracted coefficients such as the expansion parameter $Q$ must be well chosen for the coefficients to exhibit a regular convergence pattern -- a property we exploit to obtain posterior distributions for such quantities. Third, the assumption of GP stationarity across lab energy and scattering angle is not generally met; this necessitates adjustments in future work. We provide a workflow and interpretive guide for our analysis framework, and show what can be inferred about probability distributions for $Q$, the EFT breakdown scale $\Lambda_b$, the scale associated with soft physics in the $\chi$EFT potential $m_{\rm eff}$, and the GP hyperparameters. All our results can be reproduced using a publicly available Jupyter notebook, which can be straightforwardly modified to analyze other $\chi$EFT NN potentials.

Abstract:The properties of the momentum space quark propagator in Landau gauge are examined for the overlap quark action in quenched lattice QCD. Numerical calculations were done on two lattices with different lattice spacing a and similar physical volumes to explore the quark propagator in the continuum limit. We have calculated the nonperturbative wavefunction renormalization function Z(p) and the nonperturbative mass function M(p) for a variety of bare quark masses and perform a simple linear extrapolation to the chiral limit. We find the behaviour of Z(p) and M(p) in the chiral limit are in good agreement between the two lattices.

Abstract:Bayesian methods are used to constrain the density dependence of the QCD Equation of State (EoS) for dense nuclear matter using the data of mean transverse kinetic energy and elliptic flow of protons from heavy ion collisions (HIC), in the beam energy range $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2-10 GeV$. The analysis yields tight constraints on the density dependent EoS up to 4 times the nuclear saturation density. The extracted EoS yields good agreement with other observables measured in HIC experiments and constraints from astrophysical observations both of which were not used in the inference. The sensitivity of inference to the choice of observables is also discussed.

Numerical calculations are done on two lattices with different lattice spacing a and the same physical volume. We have calculated the nonperturbative wave function renormalization function Z(q) and the nonperturbative mass function M(p) for a variety of bare quark masses and perform a simple linear extrapolation to the chiral limit. We focus on the comparison of the behavior of Z(q) and M(p) in the chiral limit in the two gauge fixing schemes as well as the behavior on two lattices with different lattice spacing a. We find that the mass functions M(p) are very similar for the two gauges while the wave-function renormalization function Z(q) is more strongly infrared suppressed in the Laplacian gauge than in the Landau gauge on the finer lattice. For Laplacian gauge, it seems that the finite a error is large on the coarse lattice which has a lattice spacing a of about 0.124 fm.
Bayesian inference for form-factor fits regulated by unitarity and analyticity

Abstract:We propose a model-independent framework for fitting hadronic form-factor data, which is often only available at discrete kinematical points, using parameterisations based on to unitarity and analyticity. In this novel approach the latter two properties of quantum-field theory regulate the ill-posed fitting problem and allow model-independent predictions over the entire physical range. Kinematical constraints, for example for the vector and scalar form factors in semileptonic meson decays, can be imposed exactly. The core formulae are straight-forward to implement with standard math libraries. We take account of a generalisation of the original Boyd Grinstein Lebed (BGL) unitarity constraint for form factors and demonstrate our method for the exclusive semileptonic decay $B_s\to K \ell \nu$, for which we make a number of phenomenologically relevant predictions, including the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$.
