Abstract:Electron beam patterned permalloy circular dots of 700 nm diameter with small separations were studied by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) in the presence of an in situ magnetic field. Images in the demagnetized state show that the dot is in a vortex state with a vortex core (singularity) in the center. Local hysteresis loops, measured by cantilever frequency shift in an external field, indicate that the magnetization reversal of individual disks is a vortex nucleation and annihilation process. By carefully doing MFM, nucleation and annihilation fields without MFM tip stray field distortions are obtained. Configurational anisotropy originated from magnetostatic coupling is found through hysteresis loops.

Abstract:Magnetic structure and magnetization reversal of permalloy ring arrays and elongated permalloy particle array were studied by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). For single domain permalloy particles, the hysteresis loop is constructed by counting the percentage of switched elements imaged at remanence. For permalloy ring elements, two different states are energetically stable: a vortex state and an onion state. Their hysteresis loop is obtained by MFM imaging at a field between the switching fields of these two states. The magnetostatic coupling among these ring elements is directly revealed. Abstract:In situ investigation of displaced chain walls in 80 at% Ni Permalloy under applied in-plane magnetic field has been carried out by out-of-focus methods of Lorentz electron microscopy. The magnetic flux in the plane of the film is schematically illustrated. The in-plane magnetic field applied to the foil is produced by a homemade magnetizing stage. By adjusting magnitude and direction of the electric current through the coils of the magnetizing stage, the magnetization reversal process of the magnetic domain wall has been in situ observed. Abstract:Diffracted magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) technique was used to study the quasistatic magnetization switching of thin-film permalloy ring structures. Two different switching mechanisms were observed, dependent on the width of the annular portion of the ring. For small widths, a two-step switching is found, from an initial onion state to a state of circulation magnetization around the ring to a final onion state. In the wider rings, the switching from the circulation state to the onion state takes place via nucleation of a vortex within the annulus. The presence of the vortex is determined by the higher spatial frequency information revealed by diffracted MOKE, and through comparison with micromagnetic simulation.

Abstract:Electron-beam-patterned submicron permalloy elements with different aspect ratios were studied by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The MFM tip stray field can be used to control a particle's magnetic state. By suitably choosing the operating mode and tip coatings, the tip induced distortion of the magnetic structure of soft permalloy elements can be largely reduced. The particle switching field can be precisely obtained by operating MFM at remanence. Through studying the remanent magnetization behavior, it was revealed that for large aspect ratio elements (>4:1) magnetization reversal occurs directly from one single domain state to the reversed single domain state, while for medium aspect ratio elements (less than or equal to4:1) the magnetization reversal occurs in a two-step process with two characteristic switching fields. Initially single domain particles switch into a low moment state (vortex state) at the first field H-s, while at the higher field H-a, the magnetic moments form a reversed single domain state. The forming of the low moment state is due to the fact that the vortex states can be trapped in the elements during magnetization reversal. This is consistent with micromagnetic simulations and can be directly demonstrated by controlled local MFM tip induced switching. The variations in the measured distribution of the switching fields for both large and small aspect ratio particle arrays are attributed to different reversal mechanisms as well as individual difference in size, thickness, and edge roughness.

Abstract:Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-coupling reveals a primary contribution from the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As.

Abstract:Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), one of antisymmetric exchanges, originates from the combination of low structural symmetry and large spin-orbit coupling and favors magnetization rotations with fixed chirality. Herein, this work reports a DMI-like behavior in permalloy via coupled vortices in confined structures. Under the in-plane magnetic fields, continuous reversals of different coupled vortices are directly observed by in situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, and reproduced by complementary micromagnetic simulations. The statistical results show that coupled vortices with opposite chirality appear more frequently with the frequency up to about 60%. Such an asymmetric phenomenon mainly arises from a DMI-like behavior, associated with the increased total energy difference between different ground-state coupled vortices. Moreover, in the reversal process, the junction between disks accelerates the annihilation of vortices moving toward it and is also the starting point of vortex nucleation. These results provide an effective method to generate a DMI-like behavior in magnetic systems with symmetry breaking surface and benefit the future development of vortex-based spintronic devices.

Abstract:We experimentally observe nonlinear spin torque in metallic bilayers of platinum and permalloy by means of spin-torque ferromagnetic-resonance (ST-FMR) under massive dc current injection. The observed nonlinear spin torque exerted to permalloy magnetization is attributed primarily to nonlinear spin polarization. Additional origin of the nonlinear spin torque is magnon generation (annihilation) followed by shrinkage (expansion) of effective magnetization, which is reveled by STFMR and unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements. The present study paves a way to spin-Hall effect based nonlinear spintronic devices as well as time-varying nonlinear magnetic metamaterials with tailor-made permeability.

Abstract:We reported in situ investigation of the magnetic domains in Permalloy thin film with the out-of-focus methods of Lorentz microscopy. The perpendicular magnetic field to the foil is produced by the objective lens current. The component of the magnetic field, parallel to the foil plane, is applied in a novel way, simply by tilting the specimen. The circle Bloch line movements along the main wall between two cross-tie walls under the influence of a hard-axis field normal to the wall and a variation of the main wall curvature by buckling of located parts of the wall under the influence of an easy-axis field parallel to the wall has been in situ observed.

Abstract:We report about element specific measurements of ultrafast demagnetization and magnetization precession damping in Permalloy (Py) thin films. Magnetization dynamics induced by optical pump at $1.5$eV is probed simultaneously at the $M_{2,3}$ edges of Ni and Fe with High order Harmonics for moderate demagnetization rates (less than $50$%). The role of the intersublattice exchange interaction on both longitudinal and transverse dynamics is analyzed with a Landau Lifshitz Bloch description of ferromagnetically coupled Fe and Ni sublattices. It is shown that the intersublattice exchange interaction governs the dissipation during demagnetization as well as precession damping of the magnetization vector.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y $$_3$$ 3 Fe $$_5$$ 5 O $$_{12}$$ 12 (YIG)/Permalloy (Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude and phase evolution caused by the magnon–magnon coupling. Our work offers a new route towards studying phase-resolved spin dynamics and hybrid magnonic systems.

Abstract:We have systematically explored the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling effect of Co/BiFeO3 multiferroic heterostructured nanodot arrays, fabricated by the anodic aluminum oxide template method. Piezoresponse hysteresis loops of these nanodots demonstrate a significant enhancement of the ME coupling effect. More intriguingly, we have realized a magnetic domain transformation from an initial single-domain state to a vortex state by applying a regional or local voltage, and the single-domain state can be recovered by using an external in-plane magnetic field. Our results will guide the invention of high-density, energy-efficient, non-volatile multifunctional ME microdevices.

Abstract:In this paper,we discuss the field-induced inhomogeneity in ferrofluids based on our theoretical analysis and experimental measurement.First,the dielectric tensor of the anisotropic media with particle chain is analyzed by using the electromagnetic theory.Second,based on a microscopic model,we discuss the behavior of the chain aggregation in the ferrofluids under external magnetic fields.Then,we relate the observable quantity—refraction index differences of the two propagating modes to the ratio between chains of different sizes and the strength of magnetic field.Finally,we experimentally measure the magneto-optical effect of ferrofluids by detecting polarization state change of the laser passing through the ferrofluids film,and the ratio between chains of different sizes is obtained by using computer simulation.

Abstract:In this study, we show the real-space observation of the magnetic domain configuration in amorphous Ce14Fe80B6 ribbon using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Cross-tie domain walls composed of magnetic vortices (Vs) and antivortices (AVs) are observed. The evolution of Vs/AVs manipulated by temperature, in-plane magnetic field, and electrical current is clearly demonstrated. Magnetic V nucleation and annihilation in pair are observed because of the stimulus of external fields.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of self-organized arrays of Fe nanostripes with a period of 3.5 nm, by sequential deposition of Fe and Ag on Mo(110). The wires display a strong in-plane uniaxial anisotropy along their length, and are superparamagnetic above Tb=185+/-15K. The large value of nucleation volumes, inferred from the analysis of the thermal dependence of coercivity below TB, suggests the existence of interactions between the wires.

Abstract:Electron holographic experiments were performed to study the magnetization reversal process of patterned Py/Al/Py (20nm/20nm/10nm) asymmetric ring stacks. By changing the in-plane field applied perpendicular to the ring’s symmetric axis, we directly observed the vortex-based magnetization reversal process through controlled domain wall motion and annihilation. The two magnetic layers were found to switch at different critical fields, leading to the existence of various distinct domain state combinations. Quantitative agreement was obtained between measured phase shifts and those derived from micromagnetic calculations, which allows us to resolve the layer-by-layer magnetic behavior as a function of applied external field.

Abstract:In this work, we theoretically investigate the dynamics of magnetic vortex in a double-plate nanostructure, in which two square permalloy plates are joined together by imposing closely on a thin permalloy film. It is found that magnetic vortices have been formed in the two square permalloy plates. Due to the involving of the joint, the out-of-plane magnetization can also be observed at the sidewalls between the square plates and the joint area. The ground states with the vortex polarities (1,1) and (1, -1) are obtained when the thickness of the joint area is varied. By applying a short in-plane magnetic field pulse, the vortices deviate from their equilibrium positions and gyrate with damping radius. Interestingly, the vortex polarity can be switched if the strength of magnetic field approaches the threshold of switching field. Particularly by changing the strength of magnetic field, the two vortices can be switched alternatively in the double-plate nanostructure. The investigations may provide potential applications in magnetic vortex memories.

Abstract:We investigated the local coupling between dense magnetic stripe domains in transcritical permalloy (tPy) thin films and ferroelectric domains of BaTiO3 single crystals in a tPy/BaTiO3 heterostructure. Two distinct changes in the magnetic stripe domains of tPy were observed from the magnetic force microscopy images after cooling the heterostructure from above the ferroelectric Curie temperature of BaTiO3 (120 °C) to room temperature. First, an abrupt break in the magnetic stripe domain direction was found at the ferroelectric a-c-domain boundaries due to an induced change in in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Second, the magnetic stripe domain period increased when coupled to a ferroelectric a-domain due to a change in out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that local magnetic anisotropy energy from inverse magnetostriction is conserved between in-plane and out-of-plane components.
