Abstract:The KSS nest is a sophisticated choice of puzzle pieces given in [Ann. of Math. 165 (2007), 749–841]. This nest, once combined with the KL-Lemma, has proven to be a powerful machinery, leading to several important advancements in the field of holomorphic dynamics. We give here a presentation of the KSS nest in terms of tableau. This is an effective language invented by Branner and Hubbard to deal with the complexity of the dynamics of puzzle pieces. We show, in a typical situation, how to make the combination between the KSS nest and the KL-Lemma. One consequence of this is the recently proved Branner–Hubbard conjecture. Our estimates here can be used to give an alternative proof of the rigidity property.

Abstract:We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.

Abstract:A tableau inversion is a pair of entries from the same column of a row-standard tableau that lack the relative ordering necessary to make the tableau column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau with precisely $i$ inversion pairs, and may be interpreted as a generalization of (column-standard) Young tableau. Inverted Young tableau that lack repeated entries were introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, and were later developed as combinatorial objects in their own right by Beagley and Drube. This paper generalizes earlier notions of tableau inversions to row-standard tableaux with repeated entries, yielding an interesting new generalization of semistandard (as opposed to merely standard) Young tableaux. We develop a closed formula for the maximum numbers of inversion pairs for a row-standard tableau with a specific shape and content, and show that the number of $i$-inverted tableaux of a given shape is invariant under permutation of content. We then enumerate $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of shapes and contents, and generalize an earlier result that places $1$-inverted Young tableaux of a general shape in bijection with $0$-inverted Young tableaux of a variety of related shapes.

Abstract:An axiomatic definition of a quantum monodromy matrix and the representations of its corresponding Hopf algebra are discussed. The connection between the quantum inverse transform method and the representation theory of a symmetric group is considered. A new approach to the completeness problem of Bethe vectors is also given.

Abstract:A combinatorial description of the crystal B(infinity) for finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in terms of certain Young tableaux was developed by J. Hong and H. Lee. We establish an explicit bijection between these Young tableaux and canonical bases indexed by Lusztig's parametrization, and obtain a combinatorial rule for expressing the Gindikin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over the set of Young tableaux.

Abstract:Set-valued standard Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux due to Buch (2002) with applications in algebraic geometry. The enumeration of set-valued SYT is significantly more complicated than in the ordinary case, although product formulas are known in certain special cases. In this work we study the case of two-rowed set-valued SYT with a fixed number of entries. These tableaux are a new combinatorial model for the Catalan, Narayana, and Kreweras numbers, and can be shown to be in correspondence with both 321-avoiding permutations and a certain class of bicolored Motzkin paths. We also introduce a generalization of the set-valued comajor index studied by Hopkins, Lazar, and Linusson (2023), and use this statistic to find seemingly new q-analogs of the Catalan and Narayana numbers.

Canon permutations and generalized descents of standard Young tableaux

Abstract:Canon permutations are permutations of the multiset having $k$ copies of each integer between $1$ and $n$, with the property that the subsequences obtained by taking the $j$th copy of each entry, for each fixed $j$, are all the same. For $k=2$, canon permutations are sometimes called nonnesting permutations, and it is known that the polynomial that enumerates them by the number of descents factors as a product of an Eulerian polynomial and a Narayana polynomial. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$, and we relate the problem to the enumeration of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape with respect to generalized descent statistics. Our proof is bijective, and it also settles a conjecture of Sulanke about the distribution of certain lattice path statistics.

Polynomial Expressions for the Dimensions of the Representations of Symmetric Groups and Restricted Standard Young Tableaux

Abstract:Given a partition $\lambda$ of a number $k$, it is known that by adding a long line of length $n-k$, the dimension of the associated representation of $S_{n}$ is an integer-valued polynomial of degree $k$ in $n$. We show that its expansion in the binomial basis is bounded by the length of $\lambda$, and that the resulting coefficient of index $h$, with alternating signs, counts the standard Young tableaux of shape $\lambda$ in which a given collection of consecutive $h$ numbers lie in increasing rows. We also construct bijections in order to demonstare explicitly that this number is indeed independent of the set of consecutive $h$ numbers used.

On the Okounkov-Olshanski formula for standard tableaux of skew shapes

Abstract:The classical hook length formula counts the number of standard tableaux of straight shapes. In 1996, Okounkov and Olshanski found a positive formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. We prove various properties of this formula, including three determinantal formulas for the number of nonzero terms, an equivalence between the Okounkov-Olshanski formula and another skew tableaux formula involving Knutson-Tao puzzles, and two $q$-analogues for reverse plane partitions, which complements work by Stanley and Chen for semistandard tableaux. We also give several reformulations of the formula, including two in terms of the excited diagrams appearing in a more recent skew tableaux formula by Naruse. Lastly, for thick zigzag shapes we show that the number of nonzero terms is given by a determinant of the Genocchi numbers and improve on known upper bounds by Morales-Pak-Panova on the number of standard tableaux of these shapes.

Abstract:We study vectors formed by entries on the diagonal of standard Young tableaux of shifted shapes. Such vectors are in bijection with integer lattice points of certain integral polytopes, which are Minkowski sums of simplices. We also describe vertices of these polytopes, and construct corresponding shifted Young tableaux.

Abstract:We provide an algebraic-geometrical interpretation of the classical semistandard Young-tableaux via the notion of Seshadri stratifications. The columns appearing in such a tableau correspond to vanishing multiplicities of certain rational functions on Schubert varieties. To build a framework for this correspondence we generalize Seshadri stratifications to multiprojective varieties, which forms the largest part of this article.

Abstract:Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.

A non-iterative formula for straightening fillings of Young diagrams

Abstract:Young diagrams are fundamental combinatorial objects in representation theory and algebraic geometry. Many constructions that rely on these objects depend on variations of a straightening process that expresses a filling of a Young diagram as a sum of semistandard tableaux subject to certain relations. This paper solves the long standing open problem of giving a non-iterative formula for straightening a filling. We apply our formula to give a complete generalization of a theorem of Gonciulea and Lakshmibai.

Abstract:Many algorithms for inserting elements into tableaux are known, starting with the Robinson-Schensted algorithm. Much of those processes can be incorporated into the general framework of Fomin's "growth diagrams". Even for single types of tableaux, there are various alternative insertion algorithms and, due to the varying ways they are described, the relationships between the algorithms can be obscure. The distinguishing features of many algorithms can be codified into graphic "insertion diagrams" which make important aspects of the algorithms immediately apparent. We use insertion diagrams to build a graphic catalog or picture book of many of the tableau insertion algorithms in the literature.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over the complex field $\mathbb C$, $P$ a parabolic subgroup containing $B$ its Borel subgroup, $P'$ its derived group and $\mathfrak m$ the Lie algebra of its nilradical. The nilfibre $\mathscr N$ for this action is the zero locus of the augmentation $\mathscr I_+$ of the semi-invariant algebra $\mathscr I=\mathbb C[\mathfrak m]^{P'}$. For $G=SL(n)$ practically nothing was known previously. The only result of comparable, but lesser complexity, is for $\mathscr V:=\mathscr O\cap \mathfrak n$, with $\mathscr O$ a nilptent $G$ orbit and $\mathfrak n$ the set of strictly upper triangular matrices. Then $\mathscr V$ is equidimensional with components known as orbital varieties, parameterised by standard tableaux whose shape is dictated by $\mathscr O$. Here the components of $\mathscr N$ are studied for $G=SL(n)$. They increase exponentially in $n$ with no a priori discernable pattern. For each choice of numerical data $\mathcal C$, a semi-standard tableau $\mathscr T^\mathcal C$, is constructed from $\mathscr T$. A \textit{delicate and tightly interlocking} analysis constructs a set of excluded root vectors from $\mathfrak m$ such that the complementary space $\mathfrak u^\mathcal C$ has the following properties. First it is a subalgebra of $\mathfrak m$. Secondly $\mathscr C:=\overline{B.\mathfrak u^\mathcal C}$ lies in $\mathscr N$ to which, thirdly, a Weierstrass section can be associated. Fourthly $\dim \mathscr C = dim \mathfrak m-\textbf{g}$, where \textbf{g} is the number of generators of the polynomial algebra $\mathscr I$. Fifthly the Weierstrass section, is shown to imply that $\mathscr C$ an irreducible component of $\mathscr N$, yet $\mathscr C$ is \textit{ only sometimes} an orbital variety closure. The resulting Component Map $\mathscr T^\mathcal C\mapsto\mathscr C$ is shown to be injective. Evidence for its surjectivity is given.

Supersymmetric polynomials and algebro-combinatorial duality

Abstract:In this note we develop a systematic combinatorial definition for constructed earlier supersymmetric polynomial families. These polynomial families generalize canonical Schur, Jack and Macdonald families so that the new polynomials depend on odd Grassmann variables as well. Members of these families are labeled by respective modifications of Young diagrams. We show that the super-Macdonald polynomials form a representation of a super-algebra analog $\mathsf{T}(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_{1|1})$ of Ding-Ioahara-Miki (quantum toroidal) algebra, emerging as a BPS algebra of D-branes on a conifold. A supersymmetric modification for Young tableaux and Kostka numbers are also discussed.

Minimal skew semistandard tableaux and the Hillman--Grassl correspondence

Abstract:Standard tableaux of skew shape are fundamental objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics and no product formula for the number is known. In 2014, Naruse gave a formula (NHLF) as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. Subsequently, Morales, Pak, and Panova gave a $q$-analogue of this formula in terms of skew semistandard tableaux (SSYT). They also showed, partly algebraically, that the Hillman--Grassl map, restricted to skew semistandard tableaux, is behind their $q$-analogue. We study the problem of circumventing the algebraic part and proving the bijection completely combinatorially, which we do for border strips. For a skew shape, we define minimal semistandard Young tableaux, that are in correspondence with excited diagrams via a new description of the Hillman--Grassl bijection and have an analogue of excited moves. Lastly, we relate the minimal skew SSYT with the terms of the Okounkov-Olshanski formula (OOF) for counting standard tableaux of skew shape. Our construction immediately implies that the summands in the NHLF are less than the summands in the OOF and we characterize the shapes where both formulas have the same number of summands.

A cornucopia of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux

Abstract:Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux and refine standard Young tableaux. They are closely tied to the descent set of standard Young tableaux and were introduced by Assaf and Searles to tighten Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur functions. The descent set and descent statistic of standard Young tableaux repeatedly prove themselves useful to consider, and as a result, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux make appearances in many ways outside of their original purpose. Some examples, which we present in this paper, include the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials, the decomposition of Foulkes characters, and the bigraded Frobenius image of the coinvariant algebra. While it would be nice to have a product formula enumeration of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux in the way that semistandard and standard Young tableaux do, it has previously been shown by the author that there is little hope on that front. The goal of this paper is to address a handful of the numerous alternative enumerative approaches. In particular, we present enumerations of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux using $q$-hit numbers, semistandard Young tableaux, weighted lattice paths, and symmetric polynomials, as well as the fundamental quasisymmetric and monomial quasisymmetric expansions of their Schur generating function.
