Abstract:Electron beam physical vapor deposition is a vacuum evaporation technology,with a high evaporation rate and no pollution,now widely used in production of coatings.Ion beam assisted deposition and plasma assisted deposition can increase the particle incident energy and diffusion capacity,improve density of condensate.The current status of electron beam physical vapor deposition is reviewed.And the prospect of this technology is pointed out.

In recent years,with the continuous expansion of PVD technology applications,higher requirements for the perfor-mance of the coatings have arose,and how to improve the corrosion resistance while ensuring the mechanical proper-ties of the coating has become a hot topic.The paper outlines the application of PVD in anti-corrosion materials,re-views the relationship between growth characteristics,component and corrosion behaviors,and respectively expounds the improving methods and mechanisms of corrosion resistance of the coating in the PVD technology.

Abstract:The progress of research on the preparation of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) coatings is systematically described with emphasis on the three coating preparation methods of thermal spraying, electrophoretic deposition, and melt extrusion coating, and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and their main applications are reviewed. At the same time, research into the modification of PEEK coatings is also introduced, including modification using inorganic materials and chemical modification. Finally, the application of PEEK coatings is introduced, and its future development directions are prospected.

Abstract:Due to various difficult-to-machine materials and increasingly severe machining conditions, more and more attention has been paid to the physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology in recent decades to deposit hard coatings on cutting tools. Combined with the status of industrial application of PVD technology, this paper reviews the main PVD techniques for coated cutting tools from the perspective of the overall PVD coating equipment, including cathodic arc evaporation and magnetron sputtering as well as their hybrid techniques, and the plasma etching which is critical for coating adhesion strength is also involved. With regard to hard coating deposition on cuffing tools, the basic principle, cathode configuration, magnetron and power supply are outlined. Issues related to target ionization ratio, coating deposition rate, coating properties and industrial application of numerous PVD techniques are also highlighted. On plasma etching, inert gas ion etching and metal ions etching are discussed. Finally, this paper summarizes and prospects the PVD technology used for coated cutting tools.

Abstract:Nuclear energy is essential for the future development of countries. However, both structural and functional components of nuclear power equipment are facing severe challenges of nuclear irradiation damage after experiencing irradiation growth and irradiation creep. How to avoid irradiation damage to nuclear power equipment has become a hotspot in international research and development of surface protection technology. Deposition of protective coatings on the underlying object surface or in bulk materials has been considered as a near-term solution to enhanc functional components. Different substrate materials are selected according to other service conditions within the reactor. Suitable material selection combined with relevant optimization can significantly increase the service life of materials. This review summarizes recent research on several categories of anti-irradiation coatings prepared by physical vapor deposition technology for current industrial applications. These includes metallic, ceramic, composite and high entropy alloy coatings. The review endeavors to impart a thorough understanding of the properties of these selected anti-irradiation coatings, from the fundamental aspects of their substrate materials to their practical applications across diverse settings. It explores not only the current research progress but also the potential avenues for future advancements. Additionally, the intricate relationships between coating formulations, their resistance to irradiation, and their ultimate performance in various environments are illuminated in this paper.

Abstract:With the development of more sophisticated cooling schemes,the structure of internal channels of blades becomes more complicated,which led to the difficulty in coating those sections.Due to the limitation of techniques,physical vapor deposition(PVD) and plasma spraying(PS) could not carry out to coat internal channels.But chemical vapor deposition(CVD) techniques can meet the demand of coating internal channels.Advanced CVD equipment,internal coating technique,performance of coating for internal channels of blades has been discussed.The result showed that the CVD equipment for internal coating was reliable and vapor aluminide coatings had good oxidation resistance,the parameter and process were stable and 100% internal surface were covered.The CVD protective coatings for the surface of internal cooling channels could be used in advanced aircraft engine blades.

Abstract:Advanced coatings play an important role in a wide range of industrial applications. These coatings are commonly used in machining tools due to their high hardness and wear resistance, but also can be applied in jewellery and decorative purposes. Deposition techniques have seen a strong evolution as result of the directly related devices, control evolution and software. Several variants have been developed around the main techniques: arc evaporation and sputtering. The coatings produced present significant differences in their characteristics, namely in terms of structure, mechanical properties and surface morphology. Depending on the substrate material and application, the deposition process needs to be properly selected, providing the particular characteristics requested. This paper intends to do a critical review of the evolution of the advanced coatings deposition process, mainly focused on the Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) process, particularly in the Magnetron Sputtering technique, which is able to produce smooth surfaces, using lower temperatures, presenting excellent mechanical and tribological properties and having very good adhesion to the main materials used as substrate.

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) guarantee the service life of high-temperature alloy substrates under harsh service environments. Premature failure of TBCs due to coating fracture, high-temperature oxidation, and calcium oxide–magnesium oxide–aluminum oxide–silicon oxide (CMAS) corrosion, which significantly reduce their service lifespan. In this study, Al film was applied on the surface of EB-PVD TBCs using arc ion plating, and then converted it to α-Al 2 O 3 by an in situ reaction between Al and ZrO 2 . The α-Al 2 O 3 have toughening effect resulting in a higher bending resistance of EB-PVD TBCs. Because α-Al 2 O 3 could seal the columnar inter-crystal gaps on the surface of EB-PVD TBCs, it reduced oxygen penetration, which enhanced the high-temperature oxidation resistance. CMAS reacted with α-Al 2 O 3 to generate spinel and calcium‐aluminum yellow feldspar compounds at 1350 °C, which prevented following CMAS penetration and corrosion. Furthermore, Al-modification reduced the surface roughness, which made Al-modified TBCs have better wetting resistance.

Preparing and Study of EB-PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings on Titanium Substrates

Abstract:Two kinds of thermal barrier coatings with NiCoCrAlY bond coatings deposited by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) and high velocity oxy-fuel thermal spraying (HVOF), respectively, as well as 8wt% Y 2O 3-ZrO 2 ceramic layers deposited in one batch by EB-PVD were prepared on near-α titanium alloys. The field emission scanning electronic microscopy and microhardness indentation were used in comparatively study of microstructures, microhardness of samples. Cracking modes and crack characteristics in TBCs were investigated after thermal cycling in atmosphere, along with the discussion of roles of residual stresses, bonding strengths and mechanical properties of bonding coats in different failure extents. It is found that morphologies of BCs deposited by different methods (EB-PVD and HVOF) resulted in the different microstructures and microhardness of their upper YSZ. The denser and more homogeneous BC prepared by EB-PVD led to the YSZ with slim and dense columnar clusters and higher microhardness, and the inhomogeneous and porous latter resulted in the upper YSZ with coarse and loose bonded columnar grains and lower microhardness, and the TBC with BC deposited by EB-PVD was more protective, which was synthetically induced by residual stresses, bonding strengths and mechanical properties of bonding coats.

Abstract:Due to the unique properties of titanium (Ti) and its alloys, it has a particularly wide range of applications in aerospace, automotive, medical and other fields. However, the problems of low surface hardness, high friction coefficient and low wear resistance of Ti alloys limit its development to a certain extent. The destruction of Ti and its alloys often occurs on the surface of materials such as wear damage, corrosion, and oxidation resistance. Therefore, the exploration and application of surface strengthening technology is particularly important. The cathodic plasma electrolytic deposition (CPED) technology, as a surface modification technology, can achieve better adhesion and facilitate the material to achieve better comprehensive performance. This paper briefly introduces the basic concepts, principles and development progress of CPED. Starting from the preparation of ceramic coatings, metal coatings, diamond-like carbon films and composite coatings, it summarizes the application of CPED in Ti and its alloys. Applications in alloys to improve thermal oxidation resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and film-based adhesion. At the end, its development in the new era environment is prospected.

Abstract:plasma spray-physical vapor deposition(PS-PVD) technology which has many characteristics of the multi-structure regulation, provides the possibility for the preparation of thermal barrier coatings with high thermal insulation and long life. It is one of the key technology to realize the development of high performance aero-engine. The unique microstructure of PS-PVD columnar structure coatings has dual advantages of high thermal insulation and long thermal cycle life, and has broad application prospects in the field of thermal barrier coatings for aircraft engines. However, the process control of PS-PVD columnar structure coating is achieved on the basis of a large number of experiments, and there is a lack of relevant theoretical research. Moreover, the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2(CMAS) corrosion failure problem faced by the columnar structure coating with high porosity restricts the use of the coating. The influence of deposition unit phase states on the coating structure was described from the structural characteristics of the coating, and the vapor deposition mechanism of columnar coating was revealed. Based on the phase transition of coating material in the jet, the essence of process parameters regulation was clarified. In addition, the corrosion mechanism of CMAS and the corrosion resistance mechanism of Al-modified coating were investigated. Finally, the structure control and performance improvement of PS-PVD coating and the application of PS-PVD technology in environmental barrier coatings and functional films were prospected.

Abstract:Abstract The article presents a new technology of thermal barrier coating deposition called Plasma Spray – Physical Vapour Deposition (PS-PVD). The key feature of the process is the option of evaporating ceramic powder, which enables the deposition of a columnar ceramic coating. The essential properties of the PS-PVD process have been outlined, as well as recent literature references. In addition, the influence of a set of process conditions on the properties of the deposited coatings has been described. The new plasma-spraying PS-PVD method is a promising technology for the deposition of modern thermal barrier coatings on aircraft engine turbine blades.

Abstract:Firstly, the necessity of thermal conductive coating research was analyzed based on the application background of thermal conductive coating. Secondly, the thermal conduction mechanism of the coating and the macroscopical and microcosmic factors affecting the thermal conductivity of the coating were discussed. On this basis, the research status of PVD thermal conductive coatings was described, and three common PVD thermal conductive coatings, namely SiC, AlN and DLC, were emphatically analyzed. Phonon scattering was the direct factor affecting the thermal conductivity of the coating, and phonon scattering could be caused by some factors, such as coating internal isotope, impurities, defects and grain boundary. The interfacial thermal resistance caused by phonon scattering had great influence on the thermal conductivity of the coating. Thermal conductivity of the coating could be improved to a certain extent by reasonably selecting preparation technology and accurately controlling process parameters. Abstract:Physical vapor deposition (PVD) technologies are widely used to produce wear and corrosion resistant coatings for a variety of industrial applications. In recent years, there has been remarkable interest in the development of novel wear resistant coatings prepared through PVD methods, which helps to reduce friction and wear, as a result of recovering energy losses up to 30% due to friction and economy loss due to wear. This chapter provides comprehensive data of recent progress in wear resistant coatings prepared using PVD methods, starting with the introduction of it needs, significance, physiochemical properties, and the selection criteria of wear resistant coatings. The applications, physical, and chemical properties of superhard materials such as diamond like carbon (DLC), titanium nitride (TiN), chromium nitride (CrN), and tantalum nitride (TaN) are also presented.
