Abstract:In order to efficiently deliver peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic in an orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing based passive optical network (OFDM-PON) system, the NC technology has been proposed to encode P2P traffic, thus reducing the P2P traffic loads. On the other hand, different ONUs may have different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) to the OLT in the OFDM-PON system, and so applying NC to encode and delivery the P2P traffic between a high-SNR ONU and a low-SNR ONU may reduce the capacity of the link between the OLT and the high-SNR ONU. That is, the high-SNR ONU, which can apply a higher-order modulation format to receive data from the OLT, has to compromise on the low-SNR ONU to use a lower-order modulation format. In order to improve the network capacity and bandwidth utilization, hierarchical modulation (HM) is proposed to be integrated into the NC based OFDM-PON system, where the high-SNR ONU can apply a higher-order modulation format without degrading the performance of the low-SNR ONU in receiving its P2P traffic from the OLT. The NC and HM based OFDM-PON system structure in both uplink and downlink is illustrated. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed system. Also, the relation between power ratio of HM and the system performance under different network settings is discussed and analyzed via the simulations.

Abstract:The Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network(OFDM-PON) technology is one of the current research focuses in optical access networks.This paper first briefly describes its study background,explains its principle,network architecture and key technologies.Then it studies and analyzes OFDM-PON-based services and bandwidth scheduling and predicts the prospects of its applications.Study results show that compared with the conventional PON systems,OFDM-PON system has its transmission bandwidth dramatically increased and realizes subcarrier-,modulation format-,and time slot-based services and bandwidth scheduling.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate, transmit, and receive an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) continuous phase modulation (CPM) signal, which is combining minimum shift keying (MSK) coding with OFDM optical modulation, for downlink application in a 4 x 2.5-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical access network, is proposed and experimentally validated. We also realize wavelength remodulation for carrying upstream on-off keying (OOK) data to reduce the cost budget at the optical network unit. The experimental results show that the power penalties for the downlink and the uplink data after transmission over 25-km SMF-28 fiber are 0.1 dB and smaller than 0.4 dB, respectively.

Abstract:In recent years, the innovation in devices and schemes of physical layer plays an important role in promoting the development of WDM-PON (Wavelength Division MultiplexingPassive Optical Network). Among the key technologies adopted in the WDM-PON system, advanced modulation formats at downstream and remodulations at upstream attract the most attention. DPSK (Differential Phase Shift Keying Modulation), FSK(Frequency-Shift Keying), IRZ(Inverted Return-to-Zero) and Manchester are four of the most common formats and each of them was studied before, but, however, nobody compared and analyzed them together. So, we will do the job by numeralsimulation in this paper. During our simulation, the 40-Gbit/s FSK is generated through the demodulation of two DPSK signals and 40-Gbit/s Manchester signal bases of employing a delay interferometer (DI) and an optical delay line as format conversion device to convert RZ-DPSK(Return to Zero-Differential Phase Shift Keying Modulation) coding to Manchester coding, both of the two format generation schemes are novel. Meanwhile, this paper emphasizes the input optical power and dispersion tolerance, which both related to the sensitivity of the system. Analyze the sensitivity with DPSK, FSK, IRZ and Manchester, and then compare the four advanced modulation formats.

Abstract:With the continuously growing demand for optical network bandwidths,multi-dimensional and multi-level modulation formats,such as 8PSK,8QAM,16QAM,have become a current focal point of research.In this paper,we make a comprehensive comparative analysis of the principles and topologies for the realization of these formats and obtain 8PSK,8QAM and 16QAM modulated optical signals by using commercially available modulation devices configured in a serial or hybrid structure.We can improve the system integration level and signal transmission performances by using configuration in a parallel structure,but it often needs multiple parallel structures,which raises harsh requirements on the cost and processes for system integration.

Abstract:Future passive optical network (PON) should combine various multiplexing method to realize larger-scale access. In this paper, mode division multiplexed (MDM) as a new multiplexing dimension is proposed, in which both the transmission few-mode fiber and the mode multiplexer/demultiplexer have low mode-crosstalk so that no multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) digital signal processing is required at the receiver. We show by experiments the feasibility of MDM-PON and hybrid MDM-TDM-PON. 10-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) signals are successfully transmitted over 1.8-km 2-mode fiber without MIMO processing.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new access networks concept: wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks. We emphasize the superiority of its architecture and analyze two special technologies adopted by recent WDMPON architecture: optical source sharing and spectral slicing. In the end, we indicate that WDMPON is the best candidate for future broadband network. It will offer important reference for telecommunication carriers to consider the best choice for the future OAN.

Abstract:Increasing bandwidth requirements have posed significant challenges for traditional access networks. It is difficult for intensity modulation/direct detection to meet the power budget and flexibility requirements of the next-generation passive optical network (PON) at 100G and beyond considering the new requirements. This is driving researchers to develop novel optical access technologies. Low-cost, wide-coverage, and high-flexibility coherent PON is emerging as a strong contender in the competition. In this article, we will review technologies that reduce the complexity of coherent PON (CPON), enabling it to meet the commercial requirements. Also, advanced algorithms and architectures that can enhance system coverage and flexibility are also discussed.

Abstract:Recently,to enhance the receiver performance,there have been increasing interests in utilizing coherent technology in passive optical network(PON).However,the cost and complexity of the optical network unit(ONU) are big problems.So a novel self-coherent PON using 16QAM modulation is proposed and demonstrated by simulation.To control the cost of ONU,all lasers needed are centralized to the optical line terminal in this scheme.Meanwhile,the optical carrier for uplink signal and local oscillator signal for coherent reception of downlink signal is generated through band-pass filter at the ONU.The simulation result proves that 10Gb/s 16QAM downlink signals can be successfully transmitted over 30km SMF at the EVM<10%.

Abstract:With the official adoption of the single-wavelength 50G PON standard at the International Telecommunication Union Study Group 15 (ITU-T SG15) meeting, both industry and academia have started extensive research on the next-generation optical access network beyond 50G. It is envisioned that 100G and 200G per wavelength and even beyond will be required in the next-generation optical access network to support the continuously growing bandwidth demands. Coherent passive optical network (C-PON), which is based on multi-access coherent optics and digital signal processing (DSP), appears to be a promising candidate for future 100/200G and even beyond single-wavelength PON, thanks to its superior sensitivity compared with current direct-detection based PONs. Actually, multi-access coherent optics brings many benefits to the optical access network beyond the improvement of sensitivity. In this invited paper, we review recent studies and progress on the flexible C-PON for optical access network in terms of access speed, multiple-access architecture, and deployment scenarios. Rate-adaptive coherent access is first introduced in this paper as a promising solution to achieve flexible C-PON. Adaptive modulation formats based on constellation shaping is highlighted to realize fine granularity of information rate and wide flexibility. We have also discussed the flexible multiplexing schemes beyond TDM, to take the full advantages of coherent access. Finally, we analyze the flexible deployment scenarios under the large power budgets thanks to coherent detection. All these flexibilities provided by coherent access would be interesting and beneficial in the next generation optical access network.

Abstract:Coherent optics is considered a promising candidate for realizing single-wavelength passive optical networks (PONs) at 100 G/lambda and beyond. It has been a game changer for enabling ultra-high-speed data transmission in long-haul and metro networks. Interest in coherent optics is at an all-time high for application to short-reach access networks. The use of a local oscillator in coherent beating with received signals results in superior receiver sensitivity and thereby an extended power budget that supports high-capacity, long-reach, and large-split-ratio access. It has also been demonstrated to be beneficial for flexible deployment and adaptive access by advanced modulation formats and powerful digital signal processing. In this article, we review use cases, challenges, and recent progress in high-speed coherent PONs for 100 G/lambda, and beyond. We also provide technical insights into key enabling technologies in coherent PONs, including innovations for simplification and optimization of coherent optics and coherent upstream burst-mode detection. Finally, we discuss the outlook for coherent PONs toward realizing a rate-flexible and adaptive fiber access network. The architecture of a rate-flexible single-wavelength time-and-frequency-division multiplexing coherent PON based on digital subcarrier multiplexing technology is introduced. In addition, the adaptive fiber access network enabled by the adaptive modulation and coding scheme is also discussed.

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a promising solution for the next generation of high-speed optical access network, capable of supporting 100G and beyond data rate. Moreover, the flexibility and adaptability of coherent PON (CPON) have attracted increasing interest. A flexible PON can enhance system throughput through adaptive modulation formats, baud rates, and coding techniques. One critical challenge for adaptive-modulation flexible CPON is the need for fast-tracking of the channel status, particularly for the downstream transmission. This is particularly important as signals with different modulation formats are continuous in downstream transmission. In the present study, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a pilot-aided digital signal processing (DSP) scheme in a 300 G flexible CPON based on 41664-QAMs, which avoids burst-signal processing in downstream transmission during modulation-format switching. The pilot symbols that we insert enable continuous tracking of the state-of-polarization, finite impulse response (FIR) coefficients for channel equalization, and carrier phase. The feasibility of the proposed pilot-aided DSP scheme was verified experimentally in four transmission cases involving different modulation formats. As a proof of concept, we achieved continuous signal processing in the downstream coherent signal detection, enabling 100-300 G flexible data transmission. We achieved total power budgets of 38, 30, and 20 dB for 25-GBaud polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) 41664-QAM signals after 20-km single-mode fiber (SMF), respectively.

Abstract:High-order external modulation and coherent detection technology are generally used in long-haul optical communication systems to improve the overall system transmission capacity.However,a low-cost direct modulation-direct detection technology tends to be more used in short-haul optical communication systems.In this case,it is necessary to adopt advanced multilevel modulation to realize high-rate large-capacity transmission.Currently,there are three principal modulation schemes considered internationally,i.e.Pulse Amplitude Modulation(PAM),Direct Detection-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(DD-OFDM)modulation,Carrierless Amplitude/Phase(CAP)modulation.This paper analyzes and compares their principles and performances,hoping to use them as the basis for the design of future short-haul large-capacity optical communication systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigated a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of a different modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. In the central office (CO), based on the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and differential-phase-shift-keying to amplitude-shift-keying conversion using Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer, 40-Gb/s optical frequency shift keying (FSK) is generated and employed for transmitting the downstream data. In the remote node (RN) or optical network unit (ONU), the upstream data is re-modulated at 2.5-Gb/s by an intensity modulator and sent back to CO with the same fiber. Since only one light source is needed for each WDM channel, and the MZM to generate carrier suppressed signal can be shared by all the channels, a centralized 40-Gb/s WDM-PON access system with low-cost configuration is realized. Error free transmission over 20-km SMF can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:Recently, mode-division multiplexing (MDM) has been investigated in transmission systems and optical access networks for capacity enhancement. In this paper, recent progress in MDM optical passive networks (PON) enabled by low-modal crosstalk few-mode fibers (FMFs) and optical components is reviewed. All-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexers (MUX/DeMUX) composed of mode-selective couplers (MSCs) are introduced to simultaneously multiplex or demultiplex multiple modes. Few-mode circulators (FMCs) are employed to realize bidirectional MDM-PON transmission. Direct detection without complex multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) is applied. Moreover, multidimensional PONs by cascading MDM optical distribution network (ODN) with conventional time-division multiplexing (TDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) ODNs are proposed and experimentally demonstrated.
