Cognitive Function of Children with Schizophrenia

Abstract:Objective To understand the cognitive function of children with schizophrenia.Methods Seventy-six children with first episode of schizophrenia were investigated with Chinese Wechsler intelligence scale for children(C-WISC).The spoken language intelligence quotient(VIQ),the operation intelligence quotient(PIQ) and the entire meter intelligence quotient(FIQ) were used to express the evaluation results.And these were compared with the norm,and undertook the correlation analysis with C-WISC.Sample rate and overall rate difference indicating statistical significance in examination were used to compare the difference of mold C-WISC unusual formation rate between study group and the norm,using Pearson correlation analysis to evaluate relation between C-WISC and PANSS meter grading.Results There were 39 patients(51.32%) whose VIQ minus PIQ was equal to or more than 14,and 36 patients(47.43%)was equal to or more than 18.There was no patient whose PIQ minus VIQ was equal to or more than 14.The range between VIP and PIQ varied from-11 to 58,and their average was 16.49.The patients of FIQ,VIQ,PIQ were equal to or less than 79 and 89,and the percentage was apparently higher than norm(u=3.0-20.44 Pa<0.01).The patients whose FIQ,PIQ were equal to or less than 69,and the percentage was apparently hig-her than norm(u=4.27,14.62,21.45 Pa<0.05;u=2.30 P<0.01).Negative symptom score was significantly negatively correlated with the core of comprehension and vocabulary and picture completion and picture arrangement and the total score of performance test(r=-0.244,-0.254,-0.248,-0.235,-0.227 Pa<0.05).The score of comprehension was significantly negatively correlated with general pathologic score and total score of PANSS(r=-0.246,-0.271 Pa<0.05).Conclusions Childhood schizophrenia has significantly cognitive impairment,and the cognitive impairment has relation with negative symptoms.Both cognitive impairmend and negative symptoms have similar basis of the potential brain damage.
