Abstract:This paper presents a simple method for approximating a rational Bezier curve with Bezier curve sequence, whose control points are those of degree-elevated rational Bezier curves. It is proved that the derivatives with any given degree of the Bezier curve sequence constructed this way would uniformly converge to the corresponding derivatives of the original rational Bezier curve.

Abstract:To compress the data of geometric information,based on the center curve and error curve of the interval Bézier curve,the approximate merging of a pair of rational Bézier curves by interval Bézier curve was obtained.The basic idea is to get the polynomial Bézier curve as the center curve which approximately merges the neighbouring rational Bézier curves by using the perturbation theory first.Then,we compute the error curve with constant or non-constant interval by solving linear equations or solving a quadratic programming problem.Both of the two error curves can be improved by the application of the well-known subdivision approach to this method.Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the correctness and validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:An algorithm is proposed to give a global approximation of an implicit real plane algebraic curve with rational quadratic B-spline curves. The algorithm consists of four steps: topology determination, curve segmentation, segment approximation and curve tracing. Due to the detailed geometric analysis, high accuracy of approximation may be achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. The final approximation keeps many important geometric features of the original curve such as the topology, convexity and sharp points. Our method is implemented and experiments show that it may achieve better approximation bound with less segments than previously known methods. We also extend the method to approximate spatial algebraic curves.

Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:By studying the existing higher order derivation formulas of rational Bézier curves, we find that they fail when the order of the derivative exceeds the degree of the curves. In this paper, we present a new derivation formula for rational Bézier curves that overcomes this drawback and show that the $k$th degree derivative of a $n$th degree rational Bézier curve can be written in terms of a $(2^kn)$th degree rational Bézier curve.we also consider the properties of the endpoints and the bounds of the derivatives.

Abstract:Subdivision curves are always generated by repeated approximation or interpolation from an initial control polygon.A new geometric subdivision scheme is proposed for curve design by corner cutting.Instead of cutting corners by beeline,every corner is cut by a polyline.It is shown that curves generated by this scheme have the similar properties such as convexity preserving property,convex hull property as Bezier curves.Several parameters are used for the control of the subdivision process,and the influence of every parameter is local.It is shown that the subdivision curve is C~1 when the parameters lie within a certain range.Moreover,circles can be generated by the new scheme explicitly.

Abstract:According to some identities and inequalities about the intermediate weights and control points of the de Casteljau algorithm for rational Bézier curve, we derive a new bound of the derivative of rational Bézier curves. The comparison of the new bounds with some existing ones is also presented. Based on some previous bounds, the bound presented in this paper and many numerical examples, we propose a conjecture of the bound for the derivative of rational Bézier curves.

Abstract:As for curvature continuity curves, they are usually constructed by means of rational cubic curves. A method for interpolating global curvature continuity curves with conic segments is presented. Firstly, the curvature continuity conditions between two adjacent rational quadratic curve segments are derived. Secondly, an optimal algorithm is presented for solving out the tangent lines at every points of a closed point set in a plane. Finally, several examples are given out to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:C-Bézier curves are an extension of cubic Bézier curves. In addition to having many properties that Bézier curves have, they have the adjustable shape parameter, α, and can represent arcs precisely. This paper presents the subdivision algorithm and G1 condition of C-Bézier curves based on the analysis of C-Bézier basis functions and terminal properties. The results have definite geometric meanings that are useful for the shape modification and representation of C-Bézier curves. The results can also be extended to surface modeling with C-Bézier.

Abstract:An explicit formula is developed to decompose a rational triangular Bézier patch into three non-degenerate rational rectangular Bézier patches of the same degree. This formula yields a stable algorithm to compute the control vertices of those, three rectangular subpatches. Abstract:Based on the study of some intrinsic properties of the weights of rational Bezier curve, it has been found that the shape of a curve can be changed by adjusting the weights without moving its control points. An approach for improving the geometric continuity order between two adjacent curves by modifying the weights is presented. The G(3) continuity conditions for two adjacent curves are first derived, which reveals that the geometric meaning of G(3) continuity is torsion continuity. A constructive method is then presented to blend two rational Bezier curves with G(3) continuity. Finally, the proposed method is used to construct closed G(2) curves, or G(3) curves by changing or inserting one control point.

Abstract:Bеzier surfaces are among the most commonly used parametric surface in computer aided geometric design. By using operator representation of Bеzier surface and reparametrization techniques, this paper presents Bеzier representation of a subpatch which is defined on a quadrilateral in domain of a Bеzier surface; the new control points can be computed from the control points of original surface by an explicit formula. The traditional subdivision method and the generalized subdivision method are special cases of this theorem.

Abstract:New geometric methods for fast evaluation of derivatives of polynomial and rational Bézier curves are proposed. They apply an algorithm for evaluating polynomial or rational Bézier curves, which was recently given by the authors. Numerical tests show that the new approach is more efficient than the methods which use the famous de Casteljau algorithm. The algorithms work well even for high-order derivatives of rational Bézier curves of high degrees.

Abstract:OR curve is polynomial and rational parametric plane curve whose offsets are rational. We here utilize the necessary and sufficient condition for properly parameterized plane curves to be offset-rational and the definite endpoint conditions, construct G1 quadratic OR curve and G1 cubic OR curve with a modulating factor、G1 quartic OR curve、C2 OR curve with transition point、C2 OR curve. A given Bézier curve is subdivided several segments by inserting knots. An OR-spline curve which is an approximation for the Bézier curve is constructed according to the conditions of endpoints of each subdivision. The exact offset to OR-spline curve can be generated directly by means of properly parameterization, which further can be regarded as an approximation for the Bézier curve. The errors between the Bézier curve and OR-spline is also estimated.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a method to obtain a constrained approximation of a rational B\'{e}zier curve by a polynomial B\'{e}zier curve. This problem is reformulated as an approximation problem between two polynomial B\'{e}zier curves based on weighted least-squares method, where weight functions $\rho(t)=\omega(t)$ and $\rho(t)=\omega(t)^{2}$ are studied respectively. The efficiency of the proposed method is tested using some examples.
