Abstract:Droplet reactors have received considerable attention in recent years as an alternative route to the synthesis and potentially high-volume production of colloidal metal nanocrystals. Interfacial adsorption will immediately become an important issue to address when one seeks to translate a nanocrystal synthesis from batch reactors to droplet reactors due to the involvement of higher surface-to-volume ratios for the droplets and the fact that nanocrystals tend to be concentrated at the water-oil interface. Here we report a systematic study to compare the pros and cons of interfacial adsorption of metal nanocrystals during their synthesis in droplet reactors. On the one hand, interfacial adsorption can be used to generate nanocrystals with asymmetric shapes or structures, including one-sixth-truncated Ag octahedra and Au-Ag nanocups. On the other hand, interfacial adsorption has to be mitigated to obtain nanocrystals with uniform sizes and controlled shapes. We confirmed that Triton X-100, a nonionic surfactant, could effectively alleviate interfacial adsorption while imposing no impact on the capping agent typically needed for a shape-controlled synthesis. With the introduction of a proper surfactant, droplet reactors offer an attractive platform for the continuous production of colloidal metal nanocrystals.

Abstract:A simple but effective aqueous-organic phase-transfer method for gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles was developed on the basis of the decrease of the PVP's solubility in water with the temperature increase. The present method is superior in the transfer efficiency of highly stable nanoparticles to the common phase-transfer methods. The gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles transferred to the 1-butanol phase dispersed well, especially silver and platinum particles almost kept the previous particle size. Electrochemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles in an oil-water system was achieved by controlling the reaction temperature at 80 degrees C, which provides great conveniences for collecting metal particles at the oil/water interface and especially for fabricating dense metal nanoparticle films. A technique to fabricate gold nanofilms on solid supports was also established. The shapes and sizes of gold nanoparticles as the building blocks may be controllable through changing reaction conditions.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the utility of an interfacial living/controlled (reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer, RAFT) radical miniemulsion polymerization in nano-encapsulation. The principles and methodology behind this technique are readily scalable and highly efficient. The living/controlled nature of the system offers great opportunities to tune the properties of the polymer shell-like thickness, surface functionality, molecular weight, and inner-wall functionality by simply using a semicontinuous polymerization technique.

Abstract:A general two‐step phase transfer, which uses amphiphilic polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and intermediate solvent, to improve the synthesis of nanocomposites is designed. This method can be generally applied to 10 types of nanoparticles with six different surface ligands, and can continue to expand. This work enables us to better understand the role of the initial solvent in the phase transfer process. For most nanoparticles, the synthetic environment usually differs from the application environment, making phase transfer a critical bottleneck in the exploration of nanotechnology. Herein, a general phase transfer method by using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and an intermediate solvent is demonstrated. A variety of nanoparticles can be transferred into different media, such as water, polar organic solvent, nonpolar solvent, and polymer precursor, while maintaining their colloidal stability. In the traditional methods of two‐phase transfer, the initial solvent is a powerful competitor, which greatly limits the window of applicable conditions. A two‐step approach where the incubation with the intermediate solvent removes the initial solvent and allows sufficient time for ligand exchange is designed. This avoids the complications caused by partial ligand exchange at the limited area of the interface. Such a method of general phase transfer to different solvents and the understanding of the underlying mechanism would broaden the application of nanomaterials.

Abstract:A phase-transfer assisted experimental procedure has been developed for the self-assembly of noble metal nanoparticles prepared by wet-chemistry methods. The protocol calls for firstly the mixing of the metal hydrosol with an ethanol solution of alkylamine, and then the extraction of the alkylamine-stabilized metal nanoparticles into a non-polar organic solvent (such as toluene, hexane, or chloroform). This method offers an effective approach to assemble metal nanoparticles on a substrate. It is therefore an attractive alternative for the preparation of self-assembled nanoparticle layers.

Abstract:The amphiphilic reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) agent with multi-carboxylic acid groups was used as the surfactant precursor to prepare the miniemulsion of styrene and paraffin by chemical shearing method. It was found that the sub-micrometer particles could be prepared by chemical shearing, and the compositions and structures of the RAFT agents had significant influence on the formation of miniemulsions. The poly(AAm-b-Stn)RAFT and poly(MAAm-co-Stn)RAFT showed better emulsifying ability. The well-defined nanocapsules of paraffin(core-structure nanocapsule particles) could be obtained using the two RAFT agents by interfacial miniemulsion polymerization, and the polymerization was more stable using the first RAFT.

Abstract:AgI nanoparticle has been reported to exhibit size-dependent properties. In the paper, we reported the use of combinations of surfactants, such as AOT, SDS, PVP and TWEEN20, to control the AgI synthesis. AgI nanoparticles can be obtained with different sizes. Measured and confirmed by DLS and TEM, the nanoparticles can be massively and evenly prepared with the sizes less than 20nm. The post-processing of extraction for the nanoparticles is relatively simple and environmentally friendly. Further experimental results demonstrate that the stability of the nanoparticles is greatly dependent on the formula of the surfactant compositions. The method presented here is a potential high-throughput technique that could be applied to synthesize many other nanoparticles.

Abstract:The phase transfer efficiencies of silica and Au nanoparticles (NPs) using four different types of cationic surfactants have been investigated. The pH value has a significant effect on the phase transfer efficiencies of NPs because the amount of surface charge of NPs will increase with the increase of pH values. At the optimal pH value, the phase transfer efficiencies follow the order of: 1–2 type >2–2 type >1–1 type >3–2 type.Meanwhile, the order of the phase transfer efficiencies agrees with the results of the contact angle. According to these results, we define a parameter P, which is the hydrophobicity per unit surface area induced by the adsorption of surfactants. The increase in the P value suggests that more hydrophobicity has been introduced to NPs per unit surface area, thus enhances the phase transfer efficiencies of NPs. Owing to the shorter alkyl chain, DTAB and MQAS12 cannot transfer the silica NPs to the organic phase, while DTAB, BQAS12, and MQAS12 cannot transfer Au NPs to the organic phase. Although other surfactants can transfer NPs successfully to the organic phase, only 1–2 type surfactants can effectively disperse NPs in the organic phase, which is also related to the properties of the organic phase.

Continuous Processing of Phase-Change Materials into Uniform Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared-triggered Drug Release

Abstract:We report a method based on interfacial, anti-solvent-induced precipitation in a fluidic device for the continuous and scalable processing of phase-change materials (PCMs) into uniform nanoparticles with controlled diameters in the range of 10-100 nm. A eutectic mixture of lauric acid and stearic acid, with a well-defined melting point at 39 °C, serves as an example to demonstrate the concept. In the fluidic device, a coaxial flow is created by introducing a PCM solution in ethanol and a lipid solution in water (the anti-solvent) as the focused and focusing phases, respectively. The formation of lipid-capped PCM nanoparticles is governed by diffusion-controlled mixing of ethanol and water. During the production, both doxorubicin (DOX, an anticancer drug) and indocyanine green (ICG, a near-infrared dye) can be readily loaded into the PCM nanoparticles to give a smart drug release system. Upon irradiation with near-infrared light, the photothermal heating caused by ICG can melt the PCM and thereby trigger the release of DOX. This work not only provides a new technique for the continuous processing of PCMs and other soft materials into uniform nanoparticles with controlled sizes but also demonstrates a biocompatible system for controlled release and related applications.
Rapid Nanostructuration of Polymer Colloid Surfaces by Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation

Abstract:We have designed an effective strategy for producing nanostructures on the polymer colloid surfaces within few minutes. The poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-stabilized polystyrene colloid latex dispersed in ethanol was exposed to a nonsolvent medium of PVP and nanometric droplets formed on the polymer colloid surfaces within few minutes. Surface wettability of the polymer colloids with nanoprotrusions experienced a significant change as compared with the smooth polymer colloids. The formation mechanism was ascribed to the precipitation of PVP phase due to the nonsolvent induced phase separation. To further confirm the proposed mechanism, the material components included in the polymer colloid lattices before the nanostructuration process and surface compositions on the nanostructured polymer colloid surfaces were characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) respectively. This new strategy provides an alternative and promising method for patterning curved polymer surfaces. The polymer colloids with different surface textures would be ideal for use as model systems in biomedical research such as targets in phagocytosis and platforms of drug delivery.

Abstract:Achieving versatile dispersion of nanoparticles in a broad range of solvents (e.g., water, oil, and biofluids) without repeatedly recourse to chemical modifications are desirable in optoelectronic devices, self-assembly, sensing, and biomedical fields. However, such a target is limited by the strategies used to decorate nanoparticle’s surface properties, leading to a narrow range of solvents for existing nanoparticles. Here we report a concept to break the nanoparticle’s dispersible limit via electrochemically anchoring surface ligands capable of sensing the surrounding liquid medium and rotating to adapt to it, immediately forming stable dispersions in a wide range of solvents (polar and nonpolar, biofluids, etc.). Moreover, the smart nanoparticles can be continuously electrodeposited in the electrolyte, overcoming the electrode surface-confined low throughput limitation of conventional electrodeposition methods. The anomalous dispersive property of the smart Ag nanoparticles enables them to resist bacteria secreted species-induced aggregation and the structural similarity of the surface ligands to that of the bacterial membrane assists them to enter the bacteria, leading to high antibacterial activity. The simple but massive fabrication process and the enhanced dispersion properties offer great application opportunities to the smart nanoparticles in diverse fields.

Abstract:To achieve better control of the formation of silver sulfide (Ag2S) nanoparticles, ultrasmall Ag nanoclusters protected by thiolate ligands (Ag44(SR)30 and Ag16(GSH)9) are used as precursors, which, via delicate chemistry, can be readily converted to monodisperse Ag2S nanoparticles with controllable sizes (4–16 nm) and switchable solvent affinity (between aqueous and organic solvents). This new synthetic protocol makes use of the atomic monodispersity and rich surface chemistry of Ag nanoclusters and a novel two-phase protocol design, which results in a well-controlled reaction environment for the formation of Ag2S nanoparticles.

Abstract:In order to enhance the dispersion ability of hydrophobic nanoparticles in water while maintaining their unique properties, we utilized poly(ethylene glycol) grafted hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (h-PAMAM-g-PEG) to modify three types of hydrophobic nanoparticle, CdSe, Au, and Fe(3)O(4), and transferred them into water to extend their applications in biology. Considering the large amounts of amino groups in hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (h-PAMAM) polymer, complexation interaction between h-PAMAM-g-PEG copolymer and nanoparticles was achieved and ligand exchange between the copolymers and original small molecules ligands occurred. The transferred nanoparticles could be easily dispersed in water with better stability, and their unique properties, such as fluorescence, surface plasmon resonance, and superparamagnetism, were well maintained in the ligand exchange process. In addition, increasing the number of grafted PEG showed a negative effect on the ligand exchange process. Due to the existence of h-PAMAM-g-PEG ligands, the stabilized nanoparticles have improved stability in aqueous and ionic solutions. In the case of CdSe nanoparticles, the h-PAMAM-g-PEG layer leads to a lower cytotoxicity when compared with bare CdSe particles, and they could be directly used in bioimaging.

Abstract:Platinum, palladium and rhodium nanoparticles stabilized by poly( N -vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) can be synthesized by ethanolic reduction of the corresponding metal halide salts and when immobilized in an ionic liquid, 1- n -butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMI][PF 6 ]), are very effective olefin hydrogenation catalysts which are capable of being recycled by a simple decantation procedure without loss of activity.

Abstract:We report a versatile water-based method for transferring nanostructures onto surfaces of various shapes and compositions. The transfer occurs through the intercalation of a layer of water between a hydrophilic substrate and a hydrophobic nanostructure (for example, graphene flakes, carbon nanotubes, metallic nanostructures, quantum dots, etc.) locked within a hydrophobic polymer thin film. As a result, the film entrapping the nanostructure is lifted off and floats at the air-water interface. The nanostructure can subsequently be deposited onto a target substrate by the removal of the water and the dissolution of the polymeric film. We show examples where graphene flakes and patterned metallic nanostructures are precisely transferred onto a specific location on a variety of patterned substrates, even on top of curved objects such as microspheres. The method is simple to use, fast, and does not require advanced equipment.

Abstract:In order to realize the multifunctionality of materials and to promote the application of nanomaterials in various fields, the transfer technology of multi-material nanofilms provides a method for the precise assembly of materials. We report a multi-material nanofilm transfer process based on hydroxide catalysis bonding technology, which can be used to transfer nanoscale thin-film materials such as gold, silver, chromium onto the interface of silica materials, and realize the patterned transfer of gold and silver. The technology provides a method for precise glue-free assembly of materials, where different types of materials can be efficiently integrated, providing more functional options for applications such as electronics and sensors.

Abstract:Large and faceted nanoparticles, such as gold bipyramids, presently require synthesis using alkyl ammonium halide ligands in aqueous conditions to stabilize the structure, which impedes subsequent transfer and suspension of such nanoparticles in low polarity solvents despite success with few nanometer gold nanoparticles of shapes such as spheres. Phase transfer methodologies present a feasible avenue to maintain colloidal stability of suspensions and move high surface energy particles into organic solvent environments. Here, we present a method to yield stable suspensions of gold bipyramids in low-polarity solvents, including methanol, dimethylformamide, chloroform, and toluene, through the requisite combination of two capping agents and the presence of a co-solvent. By utilizing PEG-SH functionalization for stability, dodecanethiol (DDT) as the organic-soluble capping agent, and methanol to aid in the phase transfer, gold bipyramids with a wide-range of aspect ratios and sizes can be transferred between water and chloroform readily and maintain colloidal stability. Subsequent transfer to various organic and low-polarity solvents is then demonstrated for the first time.

Abstract:Well-defined metal–organic framework (MOF)@polymer core–shell composite particles with polyamide, polyurea, and polythiourea as the shell layer have been constructed for the first time using non-solvent-induced surface-aimed polymerization. This surface polymerization method utilizes non-solvent-induced phase separation to concentrate and direct monomers onto MOF particle surfaces, thus completing the coating process in less than 5 min. The generalizability of this method has been demonstrated with different MOFs. Coating MOF particles with any of the three polymers can effectively improve the stability of the MOF in harsh chemical environments. When used for heavy metal removal, polythiourea-coated composite particles (MOF@HDA-PDTC) exhibited a drastically improved Hg(II) removal rate and full utilization of the thione groups for Hg(II) binding compared to their neat polymer counterparts. This highlights the unique benefit of this core–shell architecture for the optimization of diffusion.
