Abstract:Report on a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) passively mode-locked picosecond Nd:YVO4 laser, with adjustable durations between 8.7 and 70 ps. The pulse duration was adjustable by varying the length of type II phase matching KTiOPO4 (KTP) crystal. Type II phase matched second harmonic interaction in combination with the anisotropic emission characteristic of Nd:YVO4 introduced additional bandwidth limiting through birefringent filtering.

Abstract:We report on the LD-pumped passively mode-locked solid-state laser with SESAM (semiconductor saturable absorber mirror), in which the output beam is single passed through a flat mirror. The CW mode-locking pulse at 1064 nm, with an output power of 5 W, a pulse repetition rate of 98 MHz, and a pulse width of 25.3 ps. The beam quality is M 2 < 1.12 and the optical-optical efficiency is 35.7%.

Abstract:We report an oblique incidence on semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) method in the LID pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 picosecond laser in this article, making SESAM as the intracavity reflecting mirror, which produces maximum average output power of 1 W, pulse repetition rate of 120 MHz, and stable continuous mode-locked pulse at 1064 nm with the pulse width of 19.2 ps. To our knowledge, this was the first demonstration that got CW mode-locking in standing-wave laser with a reflected mirror SESAM in oblique incidence way.

Abstract:Passively Q-switched diode-pumped Nd: YVO4 laser was realized with a novel central semiconductor saturable absorption mirror (SESAM). The shortest pulse duration is 8.3 ns. The highest peak power is 135 mW. The repetition rate varies between 400 kHz and 2 MHz. The repetition rate of Q-switch with the absorber is much higher than which of the most absorbers known as far.

Abstract:A diode pumped Nd:YVO 4 semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAM) passive mode-locked intracavity frequency doubled laser was studied. A type I phase matching LBO frequency doubling crystal was inserted in the cavity. With a pump power of 4.5 W, a 140 mW output of frequency doubled beam was achieved with LBO, while the power of one fundamental frequency beam was 240 mW with repetition rate of 85 MHz, and pulse duration of 5.2 ps.

Abstract:A laser diode end-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO(4) solid-state laser with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), in which the intracavity laser beam spot on the SESAM can be adjusted periodically, is investigated. Inserting a rectangular prism (RP) into the laser cavity is a promising approach towards the goal of periodically moving the position of the focus spot of the intracavity pulse on the SESAM surface to avoid the long-time irradiation of the laser beam on the same position, thereby solving a series of problems caused by damage to the SESAM and greatly prolonging its usage life. The adjustment of the rectangular prism in the laser cavity does not break the stable continuous wave (CW) mode-locked condition. The laser generates a stable picosecond pulse sequence at 1064 nm with an output power of 3.6 W and a pulse width of 14 ps. The instabilities of the output power and the pulse width are 1.77% and 4.5%, respectively.

Abstract:A diode end-pumped passively mode-locked Nd∶YVO_4 picosecond laser with home made semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) is presented. By choosing a low-transmission output coupler and extending the cavity length, the Q-switching mode-locked pulses are suppressed and the proportion of direct current is decreased in V shaped resonator. When the cavity length is increased from 0.66 m to 1.27 m and 1.86 m, the proportion of direct current is decreased from 52% to 13.6% and 0.3%. At last, a stable continuous mode-locked pulses are attained and the pulse repetition rate is 80 MHz. The spectral width is measured to be 0.15 nm. Considering the thermal effect of the crystal, a four-mirror Z-cavity is designed using the matrix method. Average output power of 1 W at a pulse repetition rate of 150 MHz is obtained. The benefit and disadvantage of the V-shaped cavity and the four-mirror Z-cavity are compared and analyzed.

Abstract:We have demonstrated stable self-starting passive mode-locking in a diode-end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). An In0.25Ga0.75As single quantum-well SESAM, which was grown by the metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition technique at low temperature, acts as a passive mode-locking device and an output coupler at the same time. Continuous-wave mode-locked transform-limited pulses were obtained at 1064 nm with a pulse duration of 2.1 ps and an average output power of 1.28 W at a repetition rate of 96.5 MHz.

Abstract:Efficient passively Q-switched Er:Y2O3 ceramic lasers operating at 2.7 mu m were demonstrated. Using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) of 2.4% modulation depth, we achieved 63 ns pulses that are close to the limit set by the cavity length. For 9.5 W of the absorbed pump power, an average output power of 0.88 W was generated with a pulse energy of 17.4 mu J and a pulse duration of 63 ns, resulting a pulse peak power of 0.27 kW. By using an SESAM with a lager modulation depth, shorter pulses of 29 ns were generated. To our knowledge, this is the first report of sub-100 ns pulses from the continuously pumped similar to 3-mu m passively Q-switched lasers. The prospects for further pulse shortening are considered, and these results may give a further insight into 3-mu m passively Q-switched laser systems.

Abstract:Passively Q-switched green output with Cr 4+ :YAG as saturable absorber and PPMgLN as the frequency doubling crystal was realized in a compact diode end-pumped Nd:YVO 4 laser. The green light output power, pulse width, pulse repetition rate, pulse energy and peak power with three Cr 4+ :YAG of different initial transmissions were investigated. The maximum average output power was 1.2 W at the pump power of 4.0 W and the maximum conversion efficiency was 30% with the Cr 4+ :YAG of 90% initial transmission. The maximum pulse energy and minimum pulse width were 10.9 μJ and 12 ns with the Cr 4+ :YAG of 75% initial transmission.

Abstract:Based on the reflectance of saturable absorber depended on the optical intensity and the interference theory, we investigate the reflectance bandwidth characteristic of the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Two kinds of SESAMs, one of which satisfies the antiresonance condition, and the other does not, are contrastively studied in mode-locked Nd:YAG lasers. Results show that stabilized continuous-wave mode-locking can also be obtained in picosecond regime by the SESAM, which dose not fulfill the antiresonance condition, as good as the results obtained using a mature commercial SESAM satisfying the antiresonance condition. Because the bandwidth of picosecond regime mode-locked pulse is not broad; therefore a broad bandwidth and a minimal group velocity are not necessary. Without considering the limit of the antiresonance condition, the difficulty of designing and growing SESAMs will be decreased significantly and there will be more freedom in the macroscopic parameters.

Abstract:A picosecond tunable ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber oscillator with semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locking large mode area (LMA) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is demonstrated. Without any tunable elements in the oscillator, we obtain self-starting mode locking ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator tunable over 35.5nm. The center wavelength in the ranges from 1028.5nm to 1064nm with excellent beam quality is achieved by proper adjusting the polarization beam splitter (PBS), half-wave plate (HWF) and SESAM in the laser cavity. The output power ranges from 0.76W to 1.01W at the different center wavelengths under the same incident pump power. A narrow spectral bandwidth with only 0.25–0.5nm and pulsed duration with 7.9ps have been obtained at the different center wavelengths. The repetition rate has been measured to be about 45.9MHz, which has a slight change for the different center wavelengths.

Abstract:The generation of passively Q-switched mode-locking operation with 100% modulation depth has been observed from a diode-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser with a low temperature In0.25Ga0.75As saturable absorber, which was grown by the metal–organic chemical–vapor deposition technique and acted as saturable absorber as well as output coupler. The repetition rate and pulse duration of the mode-locked pulses concentrated in the Q-switch envelop were 455MHz and 12ps, respectively. The average output power was 1.8W and the slope efficiency was 36%.

Abstract:We report on the formation of the nanosecond pulse in an erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked with a molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2)-deposited microfiber. The evolution of the pulse states from slightly chirped picosecond pulse to highly chirped nanosecond pulse was observed. As the pump power increases to a certain value, the picosecond pulse abruptly transforms into nanosecond pulse with the pulse duration of 70 ns and the maximum pulse energy of 21 nJ at the fundamental repetition rate of 3.54 MHz. With the advantages of high pulse energy, large pulse duration, and low peak power, the nanosecond pulse could be destined for amplification and compression to achieve high-power applications promisingly.

Abstract:We passively Q switched a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 microchip crystal with an antiresonant Fabry-Perot saturable absorber and achieved single-frequency pulses as short as 56 ps. We can vary the pulse width from 56 ps to 30 ns and the repetition rate from 27 kHz up to 7 MHz by changing the design parameters of the saturable absorber and the pump power.

Abstract:Two semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs), of which one is coated with 50% reflection film on the top and the other is not, were contrastively studied in passively mode-locked solid-state lasers which were pumped by low output power laser diode (LD). Experiments have shown that reducing the modulation depth of SESAM by coating partial reflection film, whose reflectivity is higher than that between SESAM and air interface, is an effective method to get continuous wave (CW) mode-locking instead of Q-switched mode-locking (QML) in low power pumped solid-state lasers. A simple Nd:YVO4 laser pumped by low power LD, in which no water-cooling system was used, could obtain CW mode-locking by the 50% reflector coated SESAM with average output power of ~ 20 mW.

Abstract:A quarter-wave plate and the thin film polarizer (TFP) are used for the LD end-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser with semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) to obtain a single beam output with a total power of 4.8 W. An optical-optical efficiency is achieved to be 24% for a stable CW mode-locking operation at 1064 nm, with a pulse repetition rate of 70 MHz and pulse width of 16 ps. The multipulse in the pulse sequence is eliminated for reaching a peak power as high as 4 kW.

Abstract:We present a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked thin disk laser (TDL) based on Yb:CaGdAlO(4) (Yb:CALGO) generating 62 fs pulses, which is the shortest pulse duration achieved from mode-locked TDLs to date. The oscillator operates at a repetition rate of 65 MHz and delivers 5.1 W of average output power. The short pulse duration of our TDL in combination with the high intracavity peak power of 44 MW makes this oscillator attractive for intracavity table-top extreme nonlinear optics applications such as high harmonic generation and vacuum ultraviolet frequency comb generation. The current average power was limited by the quality of the Yb:CALGO disk. However, power scaling of Yb:CALGO TDLs to the multi-10-W range with short pulse durations (<100 fs) appears feasible in the near future by using thinner disks of better quality and further optimized SESAMs.

Abstract:Pico-second solid-state lasers with multi-watt average power and multi-kilowatt peak power are required for numerous applications such as UV generation and pumping of optical parametric oscillators for RGB laser TV display. In the past few years laser diode bars as pump source with continue output power of hundreds watts or more have become commercially available. LD side pumping YAG laser module can be used to generate high reputation mode locked output pulse with SESAM (Semiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror) as an end cavity mirror. In this paper, we demonstrate an all solid-state mode-locked YAG laser with three-mirror folded cavity with a SESAM mirror, 80MHz pulse rate, about 10ps pulse width, and 2W 1064 nn output power. Thermal effect of laser rod, and polarization of intra-cavity beam are considered in laser cavity design. The enhancement of laser performance and decreasing Q switching effect are discussed. Further investigation is greatly needed.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser. Pumped by a 976 nm single-mode fiber laser, a self-starting mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser was demonstrated, delivering a 618-mW output power with 140-fs pulses and a 95.4-MHz repetition rate. The output spectrum is centered at 1053 nm with a spectral width of 10.4 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse ever generated from a mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser.
