Abstract:AIM: To investigate neural processing of emotional target words proceded by masked affective priming words presented in either subliminal or supraliminal condition,with the masked priming paradigm and event-related potential (ERP) spatiotemporal pattern. METHODS: The experiment was conducted at Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University between September or October in 2005. Without any suffering or family history of mental disorder,23 college students with normal or corrected sight were volunteered to participate the observation.1Totally 1 355 common nouns or adjectives were collected for scoring emotional valence (positive,neutral,negative) and familiarity (frequencies of subjective words) by 5 ranks. Then 60 words of high familiarity and distributed affective valence were further selected for three emotional categories of positive,negative and neutral on Chinese double-character words (presentation duration: 300 ms),which was proceeded by masked primes.2There were three relations between prime and target: congruent (positive-positive,negative-negative) incongruent (negative-positive,positive-negative) neutral (neutral-positive,neutral-negative).3The stimulus onset asynchrony between prime and target was 600 ms and 693 ms separately. The three-way 2 (prime presentation: subliminal-11.7 ms,supraliminal-105 ms) ×3 (prime-target valence relations: congruent,neutral,incongruent)×2 (target valence: positive,negative) analysis of variance (ANOVA) of repeated-measures was performed for reaction time. And the two-way 3 (prime-target relations)×2 (target valence) ANOVA of repeated-measures was performed twice for ERP in both subliminal and supraliminal presentations separately. The resultant F-value was interpolated to generate statistical parametric mapping (SPM):1interaction (affective priming×target)2target effect (positive/negative)3affective priming (congruent/incongruent/neutral). RESULTS: Five subjects were rejected due to EEG artifact and high sensitivity,thus 18 testees were involved in the result analysis.1Reaction time: The difference was significant between positive target and negative target (628.59±13.32) ms,(639.58±12.26) ms,F(1,17)=4.25,P=0.055 Whereas no notable effect was found in awareness factor and affective priming factor.2F-value SPM of ERP: Under subliminal condition,SPM (F) suggested significant interaction between prime-target factor and target valence appeared bilateral frontoparietal regions and left hemisphere (150-200 ms) significant target effect occurred in left frontotemporal region (120-150 ms),right hemisphere (200-300 ms) and bilateral frontoparietal areas (325-375 ms) significant prime-target effect was present in bilateral frontoparietal areas (550-575 ms). Under supraliminal presentation,SPM (F) suggested no significant interaction existed significant target effect showed in left fronto-parieto-temporal region (100-150 ms) and extensive bilateral hemispheres (175-600 ms) significant prime-target effect appeared in bilateral occipital regions twice (125-150 ms and 300-325 ms) and extensive bilateral hemispheres (475-600 ms). CONCLUSION: ERP index indicates emotional words as prime can make a significant impact on elaborating the target stimulant no matter presented in subliminal or supraliminal conditions. The time course of affective priming is longer than 600 ms. Significant interaction between prime-target relations and target valence just under subliminal presentation suggests affective priming may be further classified into several subtypes including negative priming effects.
