Abstract:The catalytic activities of nanophase doped cerium oxides have been investigated. Markedly enhanced catalytic activities for the reaction 2 CO + SO2 → 2 CO2 + S0 were invoked by the dopants. A Ca-doped CeO2 sample had a light-off temperature at 430 °C, which was 70 °C lower than an undoped CeO2 sample. Neither of the samples were subject to phase changes during the reaction. Samples of Pb-doped and Co-doped CeO2 initially showed low catalytic activities for the reaction, but became, during the experiments, more active than the undoped CeO2 sample. These samples developed a PbS and a CoS2 phase during the respective experiments. All samples showed a hysteresis in the activity for the reaction. This hysteresis was larger for the doped samples than the undoped, giving fall-off temperatures in the range of 200–320 °C. The materials were further evaluated by temperature programmed reduction and oxidation (TPR/TPO) studies using CO and SO2 gases.
