Abstract:In this paper, we study the global-in-time compressible Euler-Poisson limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system with soft potential for the whole range \gamma \in (-3, 0), as the Knudsen number tends to zero. By using the truncated Hilbert expansion, we first transform the original system to a remainder system. After choosing a new time-velocity weight and establishing some new inequalities of the nonlinear term, we obtain the low-velocity and high-velocity a priori estimates of solutions to the remainder system. Due to the effects of a self-consistent electric field which requires higher regularities than the Boltzmann equation, we then derive the extra weighted W1,\infty estimates to close the total energy. Finally, according to the classical L2--L\infty interplay mecha-nism of the system, we rigorously prove the validity of the global-in-time hydrodynamic limits of the VPB system in a soft potential case. Our results generalize those obtained by Guo and Jang [Comm. Math. Phys., 299 (2010), pp. 469--501], where the same system with a hard-sphere collision kernel was considered. Our results also reveal the effect of the soft potentials on the compressible Euler -Poisson limit of the VPB system: for the hard-sphere collision kernel case, the validity time interval is [0, \epsilon 1 2k -3 2 2k -2], k \geq 6, while for the soft potential case, it becomes [0, \epsilon -\gamma (2-\gamma )(1-\gamma ) ], \gamma \in (-3, 0).
