Abstract:A concise and efficient synthetic approach was developed for the synthesis of functionalized chromeno[4,3-b]pyrrol-4(1H)-ones via a one-pot, three-component reaction of 4-aminocoumarin, arylglyoxal monohydrates, and aromatic amines promoted by KHSO4 in toluene under reflux condition. The attractive features of this protocol are operational simplicity, short reaction time, easy purification of products and good to excellent yields.

Abstract:A facile and efficient domino cyclization between 3-aminocoumarins and arylglyoxal monohydrates in the presence of para-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA) as a promoter was employed for the synthesis of two libraries of chromeno[3,4-b]pyrrol-4(3H)-one derivatives. Simple workup procedures were used to obtain the products in moderate to excellent yields. The solvents toluene and ethanol served important roles in the selective formation of the pyrrolocoumarin derivatives characterized by their different substitution patterns.

Abstract:Yb(OTf) 3 is used as an alternative to conventional acid catalysts in the Pechmann condensation reaction of phenols with β-keto esters leading to the formation of coumarin derivatives. Abstract:An efficient approach was developed for synthesis of 3-tosyloxy-4-hydroxycoumarins under mild conditions by using Koser's reagents. The reaction tolerated various functional groups, and the products served as useful aromatic building blocks. Additionally, a plausible mechanism via iodonium ylide was proposed, and the oral anticoagulant Warfarin was synthesized in good yield.
An Efficient and Versatile Deep Eutectic Solvent-Mediated Green Method for the Synthesis of Functionalized Coumarins

Abstract:Herein, we report a green and efficient synthetic route for the construction of diverse functionalized coumarins in good-to-excellent yields (60-98%) via the Pechmann condensation. The optimized synthetic route involves a biodegradable, reusable, and inexpensive deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride and l-(+)-tartaric acid in a ratio of 1:2 at 110 °C. Interestingly, phloroglucinol and ethyl acetoacetate, upon reaction, furnished the functionalized coumarin (20) in 98% yield within 10 min. On the other front, the same DES at relatively lower reaction temperature (90 °C) was found to provide the bis-coumarins in decent yields (81-97%) within 20-45 min. Moreover, this particular method was found to be quite effective for large-scale coumarin synthesis without noteworthy reduction in the yields of the desired products. Noticeably, in this versatile approach, the DES plays a dual role as solvent as well as catalyst, and it was effectively recycled and reused four times with no significant drop-down in the yield of the product.

Abstract:A straightforward protocol for the direct conversion of readily available coumarin‐3‐carboxylic acids to the corresponding 3‐iodocoumarins is described herein. Heating acetonitrile solution of coumarin‐3‐carboxylic acids, molecular iodine and potassium hydrogen phosphate resulted in the decarboxylative iodination of coumarin‐3‐carboxylic acids via radical mechanism. Various electron rich and electron poor coumarin‐3‐carboxylic acids were compatible with the established reaction conditions and consequently afforded the corresponding 3‐iodocoumarins in (46‐93%) reaction yields with minimum purification efforts. The formed products serve as valuable precursors to streamline more complex organic compounds incorporating coumarin core.

Abstract:The Er(OTf) 3 -catalyzed cascade cyclization reaction of para -quinone methides ( p -QMs) with various 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed, which efficiently constructed a series of versatile 4-aryl-3,4-dihydrocoumarins and 4-aryl-4 H -chromenes. Herein, we not only propose a novel cyclization strategy of p -QMs, but also provide an easy access to structurally diverse coumarins and chromenes.

Abstract:A novel iodine-mediated intermolecular iodosulfonylation reaction of alkenes for dual C-S and C-I bond formation is described. A series of alkenes could be selectively converted into the corresponding beta-iodo sulfones, which are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Abstract:A facile silver-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation of arylthiodifluoroacetic acids or aryloxydifluoroacetic acids with coumarins/quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones was developed. This transformation provided a series of C-3 aryloxydifluoromethylated or arylthiodifluoromethylated coumarins/quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones containing various functional groups in moderate to good yields, featuring good functional group tolerance, easily accessible starting materials and operational simplicity.

Abstract:A highly efficient and convenient procedure to access a series of coumarin-containing phthalides and derivatives is developed. The novel bis-heterocyclic products are obtained via reactions between 4-hydroxycoumarins (or 4-hydroxy-2-quinolones) with different 2-formylbenzoic acids in water as an environmentally friendly solvent. 4-Aryl substituted derivatives of 3-(4-hydroxy)coumarinylphthalide are obtained in excellent yields by initial conversion into the corresponding triflate and subsequent palladium-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura coupling with arylboronic acids.

Abstract:A facile synthesis of substituted coumarins via Pechmann condensation catalyzed by SnCl4 grafted on silica gel is described, which was conducted under solvent-free condition in high yields. The catalyst is noncorrosive and can be easily prepared and separated from the reaction mixture. This methodology offers some advantages with regard to yield of products, simplicity in operation and green aspects.
