Abstract:The optical transient and kinetics characterizations of the transients formed in the reaction of OH with benzotrifluoride (BTF) were performed by a laser flash photolysis technique. The results indicated that the formation of pi-type adduct of C6H5(OH)CF3 was the major reaction channel, and the sigma-type adduct of C6H5CF3OH formation was an additional minor process in the oxidation reaction of BTF attacked by OH radicals yielded from the photolysis of H2O2. Addition of OH to the CF3 group led to the fluoride ion elimination to yield alpha,alpha-difluorophenylcarbinol (C6H5CF2OH). Trifluoromethylphenol (HOC6H4CF3) of meta-,para- and ortho-substituted isomers resulted from the addition of OH to the BTF aromatic ring.

Abstract:Spectroscopic investigations discovered that the in-situ generated phenylhydrazone anion was significantly bathochromically shifted to visible light region for photoactivation under irradiation. The photoexcited phenylhydrazone anion was potential to reduce aryl iodides via single electron transfer process for the subsequent radical chain reaction. A redox-neutral photochemical carbonylation of aryl iodides was developed on basis of the special spectroscopic features of phenylhydrazone anion. This protocol provided a convenient and efficient synthetic tool for accessing carbonylation products under redox neutral conditions without the need of transition-metals.

Photodissociation Reaction of 1,2-Diiodoethane in Solution: A Theoretical and X-Ray Diffraction Study

Abstract:Various molecular species are known to form during the photoreaction of C2H4I2 in the gas phase and in solution. We have studied all species involved in this reaction by ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations: Geometries, energies, and vibrational frequencies of C2H4I2, bridged C2H4I*, anti C2H4I*, C4H4, I2, I3-, and the isomer C2H4I-I were calculated. The absorption peaks and oscillator strengths of selected species along the potential energy surface (PES) were calculated using time-dependent DFT and were compared with available experimental results. The calculated PES satisfactorily describes the observed reactions of the photoexcited C2H4I2 molecule. In the gas phase, there is only one reaction pathway: the first C-I bond ruptures followed by a secondary C-I breakage in the haloethyl radical C2H4I*. In solution, by contrast, another reaction channel, which is energetically more favored over the secondary dissociation, is switched on due to a solvation effect: the bridged C2H4I* can bind to the free iodine atom to form a C2H4I-I isomer without any energy barrier. The isomer can then break into C2H4 and I2. The rotational barriers in the gas phase and in solution were also calculated and compared. To provide experimental data on the structure of C2H4I2 in solution, the ground state structure of C2H4I2 in methanol was determined from static X-ray diffraction data using 88 keV (lambda = 0.14 A) X-rays. The structural parameters are compared with those from the theoretical results.

Abstract:Iodine chemistry has a broad range of implications for atmospheric processes including new particle formation. Hypoiodous acid (HOI) is a major iodine reservoir species. Its heterogeneous recycling in marine aerosols influences the lifetime of ozone in the troposphere. One important step of such recycling is the reaction between HOI and HY (Y = Cl, Br, I). In this article, we employ ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and quantum chemistry to investigate these reactions at the surface of atmospheric aerosols. Di-halogen (XY) can be formed in a picosecond time scale, with the formation of a loop structure connected by hydrogen and halogen bonds. The photolysis of XY at the surface of an aerosol is faster than in the gas phase. In addition to the formation of di-halogen, a new pathway to forming a [H2O···I···OH2]+ complex by the direct or indirect proton transition is identified. Results presented in this study deepen our understanding of the faster iodine-heterogeneous recycling at the surface of aerosols.

Abstract:The use of abundant and inexpensive fluorine feedstocks to synthesize fluorinated compounds is a promising strategy that has not been extensively investigated. Dibromodifluoromethane (CF2Br2) is an inexpensive fluorine source that has rarely been used for C-H fluoroalkylation. This study reveals an iridium-catalyzed, tunable strategy for synthesizing acyl fluorides and difluorobromomethylated products using CF2Br2. To achieve the desired products, this process only requires the change of solvent (from DMSO to 1,4-dioxane) under blue LED illumination. A variety of arenes and heteroarenes with electron-donating substituents were successfully used, yielding the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. Mechanistic experiments revealed that DMSO served a dual role, functioning as both solvent and nucleophilic reagent in C-H fluorocarbonylation.

Abstract:Iodoform (CHI 3 ) has garnered significant attention for its unique ability to induce photo-cyclopropanation of olefins by releasing an iodine radical through C–I bond cleavage. However, the detailed mechanism underlying CHI 3 photodissociation is still not fully understood. Here, we elucidate the ultrafast structural dynamics of CHI 3 upon photoexcitation using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray liquidography (fs-TRXL) at an X-ray free-electron laser facility. The fs-TRXL data was decomposed into the isotropic and anisotropic data. The isotropic data reveal that the formation of CHI 2 and I radicals upon photolysis precedes the emergence of iso -CHI 2 –I. After a short induction period, two competing geminate recombination pathways of CHI 2 and I radicals take place: one pathway leads to the recovery of CHI 3 , while the other results in the formation of iso -CHI 2 –I. Additionally, the anisotropic data show how the transient anisotropic distribution of both the species formed upon photoexcitation and the ground-state species depleted upon photoexcitation decays through rotational dephasing. Furthermore, the observed structural dynamics of CHI 3 has distinctive differences with that of BiI 3 , which can be attributed to differences in their central moieties, CH and Bi. Our findings provide insights into the photoinduced reaction dynamics of CHI 3 , enhancing the understanding of its role in photochemical reactions.

Abstract:The sulfur dioxide surrogate of DABCO center dot(SO2)(2) is used as an efficient catalyst for the cleavage of the perfluoroalkyl-halogen bond under visible-light irradiation for the first time. This unexpected reaction of perfluoroalkyl halides and 1,3-diarylprop-2-yn-1-ones catalyzed by DABCO center dot(SO2)(2) in the presence of visible light proceeds smoothly, leading to 3-fluorinated indenones in good yields. During the reaction process, the cleavage of the perfluoroalkyl-halogen bond and subsequent radical oxidative cyclization are involved under metal-free conditions. A broad reaction scope is observed. Moreover, a plausible mechanism supported by theoretical calculations is proposed.

Abstract:We have investigated the structural dynamics in photoexcited 1,2-diiodotetrafluoroethane molecules (C2F4I2) in the gas phase experimentally using ultrafast electron diffraction and theoretically using FOMO-CASCI excited state dynamics simulations. The molecules are excited by an ultra-violet femtosecond laser pulse to a state characterized by a transition from the iodine 5p orbital to a mixed 5p|| hole and CF2 antibonding orbital, which results in the cleavage of one of the carbon-iodine bonds. We have observed, with sub-Angstrom resolution, the motion of the nuclear wavepacket of the dissociating iodine atom followed by coherent vibrations in the electronic ground state of the C2F4I radical. The radical reaches a stable classical (non-bridged) structure in less than 200 fs.

Defluorinative C−O Coupling between Trifluoromethylarenes and Alcohols via Copper Photoredox Catalysis

Abstract:Fluorine-containing compounds have shown unparalleled impacts in the realm of functional molecules, and the ability to prepare novel structures has been crucial in unlocking new properties for pharmaceutical and materials science. Herein, we report a copper-catalyzed, photoinduced defluorinative C‒O coupling between trifluoromethylarenes and alcohols. This method allows for direct access to a wide selection of difluorobenzylether (ArCF2OR) molecules, including a com-pound displaying liquid crystal behavior. Through slight modification of the protocol, we were able to generate ArCF2I products, another class of synthetically useful fluorine-bearing molecules. Comprehensive mechanistic investigations first suggested ArCF2I as a reservoir to steadily supply the key ArCF2• radical species. Furthermore, experimental evi-dence supported a mechanism consisting of two collaborative cycles: C‒F activation operated by a homoleptic Cu(I) co-ordinated by two bisphosphine ligands as the photocatalyst and C‒O coupling promoted by a Cu(I) ligated by a single bisphosphine ligand. The critical roles of the two salt additives, lithium iodide and zinc acetate, in orchestrating the two cycles were also elucidated. This dual-role copper catalyst demonstrates the power of base metal photoredox catalysis in achieving both substrate activation and chemical bond formation via a single catalytic system.

Abstract:Criegee intermediates (CIs), also known as carbonyl oxide, are reactive intermediates that play an important role in the atmospheric chemistry. Investigation on the structures and reactivity of CIs is of fundamental importance in understanding the underlying mechanism of their atmospheric reactions. In sharp contrast to the intensively studied parent molecule (CH2OO) and the alkyl-substituted derivatives, the knowledge about the fluorinated analogue CF3C(H)OO is scarce. By carefully heating the triplet carbene CF3CH in an O2-doped Ar-matrix to 35 K, the elusive carbonyl oxide CF3C(H)OO in syn- and anti-conformations has been generated and characterized with infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The spectroscopic identification is supported by 18O-labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) and MP2/6-311++G(2d,2p) levels. Upon the long-wavelength irradiation (λ > 680 nm), both conformers of CF3C(H)OO decompose to give trifluoroacetaldehyde CF3C(H)O and simultaneously rearrange to the isomeric dioxirane, cyclic-CF3CH(OO), which undergoes isomerization to the lowest-energy carboxylic acid CF3C(O)OH upon UV-light excitation at 365 nm. The O2-oxidation of CF3CH via the intermediacy of CF3C(H)OO and cyclic-CF3CH(OO) might provide new insight into the mechanism for the degradation of hydro-chlorofluorocarbon CF3CHCl2 (HCFC-123) in the atmosphere.
Isomer-Dependent Fragmentation Dynamics of Inner-Shell Photoionized Difluoroiodobenzene

Abstract:The fragmentation dynamics of 2,6- and 3,5-difluoroiodobenzene after iodine 4$d$ inner-shell photoionization with soft X-rays are studied using coincident electron and ion momentum imaging. By analyzing the momentum correlation between iodine and fluorine cations in three-fold ion coincidence events, we can distinguish the two isomers experimentally. Classical Coulomb explosion simulations are in overall agreement with the experimentally determined fragment ion kinetic energies and momentum correlations and point toward different fragmentation mechanisms and time scales. While most three-body fragmentation channels show clear evidence for sequential fragmentation on a time scale larger than the rotational period of the fragments, the breakup into iodine and fluorine cations and a third charged co-fragment appears to occur within a few hundred femtoseconds -- a time scale larger than the rotational period of the fragments, the breakup in other channels appears to occur within a few hundred femtoseconds.

Abstract:The cleavage of the aryl C−X bond under UV‐irradiation and its subsequent addition into an intramolecular alkyne moiety have been studied carefully. By simply regulating the addition of electron donor, highly chemoselective intramolecular hydroarylation and haloarylation reactions were achieved, providing efficient methods for the synthesis of 9‐benzylidene‐9H‐fluorene and 9‐(halo(phenyl)methylene)‐9H‐fluorene derivatives.
Probing C-I Bond Fission in the UV Photochemistry of 2-Iodothiophene with Core-to-Valence Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:The UV photochemistry of small heteroaromatic molecules serves as a testbed for understanding fundamental photoinduced transformations in moderately complex compounds, including isomerization, ring-opening, and molecular dissociation. Here, a combined experimental-theoretical study of 268 nm UV light-induced dynamics in 2-iodothiophene (C$_4$H$_3$IS) is performed. The dynamics are experimentally monitored with a femtosecond XUV probe pulse that measures iodine N-edge 4d core-to-valence transitions. Experiments are complemented by density functional theory calculations of both the pump-pulse induced valence excitations as well as the XUV probe-induced core-to-valence transitions. Possible intramolecular relaxation dynamics are investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Gradual absorption changes up to ~0.5-1 ps after excitation are observed for both the parent molecular species and emerging iodine fragments, with the latter appearing with a characteristic rise time of 160$\pm$30 fs. Comparison of spectral intensities and energies with the calculations identify an iodine dissociation pathway initiated by a predominant $\pi\to\pi^*$ excitation. In contrast, initial excitation to a nearby n$_\perp\to\sigma^*$ excited state appears unlikely based on a significantly smaller oscillator strength and the absence of any corresponding XUV absorption signatures. Excitation to the $\pi\to\pi^*$ state is followed by contraction of the C-I bond, enabling a nonadiabatic transition to a dissociative $\pi\to\sigma_\textrm{C-I}^*$ state. For the subsequent fragmentation, a narrow bond-length region along the C-I stretch coordinate between 230 and 280 pm is identified, where the transition between the parent molecule and the thienyl radical + iodine atom products becomes prominent in the XUV spectrum due to rapid localization of two singly-occupied molecular orbitals on the two fragments.
