Abstract:Spherical and well-dispersed silica/poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (SiO2/PSA) core-shell particles have been synthesized using an improved phase-inversion process. The resulting particles were successfully used as supports for polyolefin catalysts in the production of polyethylene with broadmolecular weight distribution. Through the vapor phase, instead of the liquid phase in the traditional process, a non-solvent was introduced into a mixture of micrometer-sized SiO2 and PSA solution. The core-shell structure of the resulting SiO2/PSA microspheres was confirmed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transfer infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. In order to avoid agglomeration of particles and to obtain a good dispersion of the SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres, the non-solvent was added slowly. As the concentration of PSA solution increased, the surface morphology of the core-shell particles became looser and more irregular. However, the surface area and the pore volume remained the same under varying PSA concentrations. The SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres obtained were used as a catalyst carrier system in which the core supported (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2 and the shell supported TiCl4. Ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization results indicated that the zirconocene and titanium-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts were compatible in the hybrid catalyst, showing high activities. Abstract:Nanostructured polymer/silica hybrid materials have gained attention as they combine the advantageous properties of organic and inorganic materials in one entity. Herein, we report incorporation of chloromethyl moieties into a living diatom to prepare an alkyl-halide activated siliceous biotemplate. Subsequent, in situ polymerization via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization generated a polymer/silica microparticle with defined geometry.

Abstract:Addition of interelement compounds across alkynes is a straightforward strategy for the synthesis of densely functionalized alkenes, which are versatile units in numerous biologically active compounds. Of these processes the bis-silylation of alkynes is of particular interest, due to the synthetic use of the alkenyl silane reaction products. While cis -bis-silylation of alkynes is well known, trans -bis-silyation of alkynes is relatively underdeveloped. Here, we report the intermolecular trans -bis-silylation of terminal alkynes, using Pd-catalysis and disilane reagent 8-(2-substituted-1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilanyl)quinoline (TMDQ), to selectively form trans -bis-silylated alkenes. The reaction process was found to be compatible with aryl and alkyl alkynes as well as those bearing electron-withdrawing groups and other alkenyl or alkynyl functionalities. The use of the reaction was displayed through late-stage functionalization of terminal alkynes bearing natural product or drug motifs and onward synthetic transformations of the trans -bis-silylated alkenes reaction products. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction probably proceeds through a combined cis -bis-silylation and Z / E isomerization process and that the use of TMDQ as the limiting reagent is key to the desired reactivity.
On the Biocatalytic Synthesis of Silicone Polymers

Abstract:Polysiloxanes, with poly(dimethyl)siloxane (PDMS) being the most common example, are widely used in various industrial and applications due to their Si-O-Si backbone structure. The conventional synthesis of PDMS involves the hydrolysis of dichlorodimethylsilane, which raises environmental concerns due to the usage of chlorinated compounds. Herein, a biocatalytic approach for PDMS synthesis is demonstrated using Silicatein-α (Silα), an enzyme from marine sponges that is known to catalyse the hydrolysis and condensation of Si–O bonds. Using dialkoxysilane precursors, it was found that Silα catalyses the formation of PDMS in non-aqueous media, yielding polymers with higher molecular weights (approximately 1000-2000 Da) compared to non-enzymatic methods (typically 0-700 Da). However, on prolonged exposure, the gradual degradation of the polymers was also observed. Overall these observations indicate that Silα catalyses the formation polysiloxanes, demonstrating the potential of biocatalysis for more sustainable polysiloxane production.

Abstract:Well-defined Ag modified hollow SiO2/TiO2 hybrid spheres were successfully prepared through a two-step hydrothermal synthesis based on polystyrene templates followed by calcination. The employed protocol involves successive coating of the functionalized polystyrene (PS) template with SiO2 and TiO2 layers, followed by Ag doping using AgNO3 as the Ag source. Finally, a calcination process is carried out for the elimination of the PS core, thermal decomposition of AgNO3 to yield Ag nanoparticles and crystallization of the amorphous TiO2 layer simultaneously to acquire the final products. With this method, a complete, homogeneous and smooth hollow SiO2/TiO2 hybrid structure with uniformly dispersed Ag nanoparticles was formed. Photocatalytic properties of the fabricated Ag modified hollow SiO2/TiO2 hybrid spheres has been investigated for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Ag deposition significantly enhanced the RhB photodegradation under visible light irradiation due of the Schottky barrier formed at the Ag–TiO2 interface, which serve as the electron trap, facilitating the separation of electrons and holes.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:A modified Stober method has been developed which permits the controlled growth of spherical hollow spheres with diameters between 197 and 208 nanometers by consecutively cocondensed methyltrimethoxysilane and dimethyldimethoxysilane monomers onto microemulsion of polydimethylsiloxane and subsequently removing the templated polydimethylsiloxane by exposure to solvents. Ammonia was used as a morphological catalyst. The morphology of the polymer spheres was demonstrated by transmission electron micrographs. (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Abstract:We described the comprehensive synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of a novel type of the ordered cubic Ia3̅d supermicroporous silicas by using tetraethyl orthosilicate as a silicon source and a hydroxyl-functionalized quaternary ammonium salt as a template under alkali conditions. The effects of various reaction conditions on the pore structure and morphology of the silica materials were thoroughly investigated. Our results showed that under a wide range of reaction conditions, supermicroporous silicas with a highly ordered cubic Ia3̅d structure can be produced with a large BET specific surface area of 1741 m2/g, high pore volume of 0.91 cm3/g, concentrated pore size at 19.1 Å, and crystalline morphology. After Al doping, the obtained aluminosilicates preserved a highly ordered cubic supermicroporous structure. By using the H-form aluminosilicates as catalysts, we selectively dimerized β-pinene. The catalysts exhibited an excellent catalytic activity for β-pinene dimerization with a conversion yield up to 100%. Compared with conventional mesoporous H-form Al-MCM-48 catalysts, the prepared supermicroporous catalysts exhibited superior catalytic performance due to their excellent shape-selective properties, producing the β-pinene dimer in a yield up to 72.4% with dimer/oligomer ratios in the range of 7.5–10.1. Abstract:Herein we report an inside-out preinstallation-infusion-hydration method for targeted synthesis of Keggin heteropoly acids (silicomolybdic acid, H(4)SiMo(12)O(40)) within mesoporous silica (SiO(2)) hollow spheres. In this process, discrete molybdenum dioxide (MoO(2)) nanoparticles with diameter size ranging from 25 to 60 nm were first prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal route in water/ethanol mixed solvents at 180 °C, which were then used as cores to grow the shell of supramolecular templated silica with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and hexadecyltrimethyl- ammonium chloride (CTACl) in alkaline solution. By thermal treatment of as-synthesized MoO(2)@SiO(2) core-shell spheres, the organic template was burned off and mesoporous shell was formed (BET specific surface area was as high as 872 m(2)/g). Meanwhile, the encapsulated MoO(2) was oxidized to Mo(6+) and infused to the mesoporous silica shells, forming heptamolybdate species (Mo(7)O(24)(6-)) uniformly dispersed on the mesopore surfaces of silica, while generating void space at the center of spheres. After hydration with water, H(4)SiMo(12)O(40) was formed by reaction between the surface Mo(7)O(24)(6-) and silica species in the presence of water. The prepared H(4)SiMo(12)O(40) @mSiO(2) hollow spheres were tested for Friedel-Crafts alkylation of toluene by benzyl alcohol. The H(4)SiMo(12)O(40)@mSiO(2) catalysts fabricated via this novel route exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward benzylation of toluene, which was approximately 2.6 times as high as that of commercial Amberlyst-15 catalyst. In addition, the H(4)SiMo(12)O(40)@mSiO(2) catalyst was very robust and could be reused after regeneration.

Abstract:Titanium silicalites have been synthesized in the TPABr+ammonia, TPABr+hexanediamine, TPABr+ethylenediamine, TPABr+diethylamine, TPABr+TEAOH, TPABr+n-butylamine, TPABr+TBAOH and TBAOH+n-butylamine systems. As-synthesized titanium silicalites were characterized by XRD, IR and 13C CP MAS NMR. Catalytic performance in epoxidation of propylene and template effect was investigated. It has been shown that both TPABr and TBAOH serve as templating agent in TPABr+TBAOH system. But in other systems, when there is enough TPABr, organic amines or ammoniums only act as the bases. TEAOH or n-butylamine can take the role of template when less TPABr is added. It indicates that the ability of organic amines or ammoniums to direct the Pentasil structure decreases as follows: TPA+>TBA+>TEA+>n-butylamine. Catalysts exhibiting good performance in epoxidation of propylene can be attained using TPABr as the template and ammonia, n-butylamine, diethylamine, hexanediamine or TBAOH as bases.
Scalable Synthesis of Uniform Mesoporous Aluminosilicate Microspheres with Controllable Size and Morphology and High Hydrothermal Stability for Efficient Acid Catalysis.

Abstract:Mesoporous aluminosilicates are promising solid acid catalysts. They are also excellent supports for transition metal catalysts for various catalytic applications. Synthesis of mesoporous aluminosilicates with controllable particle size, morphology, and structure, as well as adjustable acidity and high hydrothermal stability, is very desirable. In this work, we demonstrate the scalable synthesis of Al-SBA-15 microspheres with controllable physicochemical properties by using the microfluidic jet-spray-drying technology. The productivity is up to similar to 30 g of dried particles per nozzle per hour. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres possess uniform controllable micron sizes (27.5-70.2 mu m), variable surface morphologies, excellent hydrothermal stability (in pure steam at 800 degrees C), high surface areas (385-464 m(2)/g), ordered mesopore sizes (5.4-5.8 nm), and desirable acid properties. The dependence of various properties, including particle size, morphology, porosity, pore size, acidity, and hydrothermal stability, of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres on experimental parameters including precursor composition (Si/Al ratio and solid content) and processing conditions (drying and calcination temperatures) is established. A unique morphology transition from smooth to wrinkled microsphere triggered by control of the Si/Al ratio and solid content is observed. The particle formation and morphology-evolution mechanism are discussed. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres exhibit high acid catalytic performance for aldol-condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and ethyl alcohol with a high benzaldehyde conversion (similar to 56.3%), a fast pseudo-first-order reaction rate (similar to 0.1344 h(-1)), and a high cyclic stability, superior to the commercial zeolite acid (H-ZSM-5). Several influencing factors on the catalytic performance of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres are also studied.

Abstract:Hollow polysiloxane particles with diameters between 1.40 and 1.60 micrometres were fabricated by consecutive cocondensation of methyl trimethoxysilane and diphenyldimethoxysilane monomers onto polydiphenylsiloxane, subsequently removing the templated polydiphenylsiloxane by exposure to solvents. TEM and AFM measurement reveal that there are obvious hollow sphere structures for the polysiloxane microsphere particles. The hollow spheres are envisioned to have applications in areas ranging from dye-industry, catalysis, pharmaceutics to materials science.

Abstract:Here, we disclose a general approach for the diverse synthesis of alkenylsilanes in a highly efficient, stereoselective, and atom-economic manner by leveraging the palladium-catalyzed disilylation reaction of 2-bromostyrene derivatives with hexamethyldisilane, which is suitable for the preparation of a series of disubstituted, trisubstituted, and tetrasubstituted alkenylsilanes. Furthermore, the resulting tetrasubstituted alkenylsilanes could be readily transformed into the corresponding diarylated benzosiloles, which have been proven to be a potential AIE material and a fluorene material.

Abstract:alpha-AgBiS2 nanowhiskers have been prepared by a solvothermal method at 160degreesC. The characterized results showed that the product was alpha-AgBiS2 which was well crystallized as uniform nanowhiskers. The chain type structure of Bi-S compound under the circumstance of ethylenediamine was found crucial in the formation of alpha-AgBiS2 nanowhiskers in the possible mechanism.

Abstract:Silica microspheres (SMs) feature non-toxic and high chemical stability, which have a wide range of applications in sensors, photosensitive emulsion and medicine. However, applying SMs as catalysts for synthesis of fine chemicals in organic and medical chemistry field has few been reported before. In this work, SMs were efficiently synthesized through hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction of ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in an alkaline system, and the surface modified SMs catalysts were successfully prepared by the impregnation method. The surface modified SMs catalyzed X − H (X = C, O, N, S) and C C bonds insertion reactions from various diazo compounds with acyclic and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, arylamines and thiophenols were reported, giving the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. The modified species played the key role in the reactions and were identified as the catalytic active species. HRTEM and XRD revealed that the modified species are highly dispersed on the modified SMs surface.

Abstract:Hydrothermally stable mesoporous aluminosilicates Al-SBA-1 with hierarchical pore structure have been successfully synthesized under alkaline condition at 120 °C by employing organic mesomorphous complexes of polyelectrolyte (poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)) and cationic surfactant (hexadecyl pyridinium chloride (CPC)) as template. The Si/Al ratio could be as high as 5 and the incorporation of Al into the silica framework did not disturb the well-ordered cubic Pm ̅3n mesostructure. Meanwhile, the incorporation of Al could greatly increase the specific surface area and pore volume of the samples. The Al-SBA-1 materials exhibited a high hydrothermal stability and remained stable even after being treated in boiling water for 10 days. The catalytic activity of the Al-SBA-1 materials was investigated by employing the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of toluene with benzyl alcohol as a model reaction and they exhibited excellent catalytic property due to the incorporated acid sites and the hierarchically mesoporous structure.
Novel Method to Fabricate Sio2/Ag Composite Spheres and Their Catalytic, Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Properties

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method for the fabrication of SiO2/Ag composite spheres with the aid of the reducing and stabilizing function of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). In this approach, [Ag(NH3)2]+ ions were first adsorbed on the surfaces of silica spheres via electrostatic attraction between the silanol groups and ions; these [Ag(NH3)2]+ ions adsorbed on silica spheres were then reduced and protected by PVP to obtain SiO2/Ag composite spheres. Neither additional reducing agent nor core surface modification was needed; the particle size and the coverage degree of silver nanoparticles on the silica spheres could be easily tuned by altering the concentration of the precursor-[Ag(NH3)2]+ ions. UV−visible spectrometer analysis showed these composite spheres had very good catalytic property; Raman spectrometer measurement showed that these composite spheres exhibited excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance.
Core-template-free Synthesis of Molecularly Ethane-Bridged Hollow Mesoporous Silica Spheres from Acid-Hydrolyzed Precursor

Abstract:Herein, using an acid-hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)/bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTEE) mixture as a precursor for the traditional surfactant-assembly synthesis of mesostructured silica spheres instead of directly purchased commercial precursors, molecularly ethane-bridged hollow mesoporous silica spheres (MEB-HMSs) with radial mesochannels and an enlarged pore size were successfully synthesized without any additional core templates. The composition, pore size, particle size, shell thickness, and rate could be controllably tailored by only changing the amount of reagents used in the reaction. The cytotoxicity assay confirmed that MEB-HMSs have good biocompatibility, together with good Dox-loading capacity.
