Abstract:In this article, our aim is to consider an efficient finite volume element method combined with the L2−1σ formula for solving the coupled Schrödinger equations with nonlinear terms and time-fractional derivative terms. We design the fully discrete scheme, where the space direction is approximated using the finite volume element method and the time direction is discretized making use of the L2−1σ formula. We then prove the stability for the fully discrete scheme, and derive the optimal convergence result, from which one can see that our scheme has second-order accuracy in both the temporal and spatial directions. We carry out numerical experiments with different examples to verify the optimal convergence result.

A Finite Difference Method for Time-periodic Solutions of Nonlinear Parabolic Equations

Abstract:A finite difference method with accuracies of fourth order in space and second order in time is proposed for time-periodic solutions of a nonlinear parabolic boundary value problem. A monotone iterative scheme is developed for proving the existence and uniqueness of the periodic solutions of the nonlinear discrete scheme, and the computational algorithms for the periodic solutions are also provided. The convergence of the discrete scheme is discussed. The numerical results show the advantages of the method.
Finite Element Method for Time-Space-Fractional Schrodinger Equation

Abstract:In this article, we develop a fully discrete finite element method for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) with time- and space-fractional derivatives. The time-fractional derivative is described in Caputo's sense and the space-fractional derivative in Riesz's sense. Its stability is well derived; the convergent estimate is discussed by an orthogonal operator. We also extend the method to the two-dimensional time-space-fractional NLS and to avoid the iterative solvers at each time step, a linearized scheme is further conducted. Several numerical examples are implemented finally, which con firm the theoretical results as well as illustrate the accuracy of our methods.

Abstract:In this paper,finite element analysis for a class of neutral delay parabolic equation is considered.Based on a linear finite element space,one semi-discrete and two full discrete finite element schemes are constructed for the neutral delay parabolic equation.Then,the L2 norm error estimates of the semi-discrete and two full discrete schemes are obtained by the projection operator.Numerical experiments proves the validity of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A Newton linearized Galerkin finite element method is proposed to solve nonlinear time fractional parabolic problems with non-smooth solutions in time direction. Iterative processes or corrected schemes become dispensable by the use of the Newton linearized method and graded meshes in the temporal direction. The optimal error estimate in the \(L^2\)-norm is obtained without any time step restrictions dependent on the spatial mesh size. Such unconditional convergence results are proved by including the initial time singularity into concern, while previous unconditional convergent results always require continuity and boundedness of the temporal derivative of the exact solution. Numerical experiments are conducted to confirm the theoretical results.

Abstract:A fully discrete modified finite element nonlinear Galerkin method is presented for the two-dimensional equation of Navier-Stokes type. The spatial discretization is based on two finite element spaces X H and X h defined on a coarse grid with grid size H and a fine grid with grid size h << H, respectively; the time discretization is based on the Euler explicit scheme with respect to the nonlinear term. We analyze the stability and convergence rate of the method. Comparing with the standard finite element Galerkin method and the nonlinear Galerkin method, this method can admit a larger time step under the same convergence rate of same order. Hence this method can save a large amount of computational time. Finally, we provide some numerical tests on this method, the standard finite element Galerkin method, and the nonlinear Galerkin method, which are in a good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, a high‐order accurate numerical method for two‐dimensional semilinear parabolic equations is presented. We apply a Galerkin–Legendre spectral method for discretizing spatial derivatives and a spectral collocation method for the time integration of the resulting nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. Our formulation can be made arbitrarily high‐order accurate in both space and time. Optimal a priori error bound is derived in the L2‐norm for the semidiscrete formulation. Extensive numerical results are presented to demonstrate the convergence property of the method, show our formulation have spectrally accurate in both space and time. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Finite element method as a very effective numerical analysis method applying in the analysis large-scale complex structure.This article introduced the space non-linear finite element analysis method,the iteration method and increases method which was often used in the analysis non-linear problem and their respective shortcomings were discussed.Mixed method which becomes by iteration method and increase method union,effectively solved shortcomings and insufficiencies of purely iteration method and increase method.Finally,the finite element computation to the engineering structure was carried out by applying the mixed method and its bearing capacity was analyzed.The results showed that the error of analysis space non-linear problem could be reduced.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this article, we present a parareal exponential finite element method, with the help of variational formulation and parareal framework, for solving semilinear parabolic equations in rectangular domains. The model equation is first discretized in space using the finite element method with continuous piecewise multilinear rectangular basis functions, producing the semi‐discrete system. We then discretize the temporal direction using the explicit exponential Runge–Kutta approach accompanied by the parareal framework, resulting in the fully‐discrete numerical scheme. To further improve computational speed, we design a fast solver for our method based on tensor product spectral decomposition and fast Fourier transform. Under certain regularity assumption, we successfully derive optimal error estimates for the proposed parallel‐based method with respect to H1 ‐norm. Extensive numerical experiments in two and three dimensions are also carried out to validate the theoretical results and demonstrate the performance of our method.

Abstract:The solutions of the nonlinear time fractional parabolic problems usually undergo dramatic changes at the beginning. In order to overcome the initial singularity, the temporal discretization is done by using the Alikhanov schemes on the nonuniform meshes. And the spatial discretization is achieved by using the finite element methods. The optimal error estimates of the fully discrete schemes hold without certain time-step restrictions dependent on the spatial mesh sizes. Such unconditionally optimal convergent results are proved by taking the global behavior of the analytical solutions into account. Numerical results are presented to confirm the theoretical findings.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel numerical scheme to effectively solve the weak, strong, and hyper-singular time-space integrals in the 3D time domain boundary element method (BEM). To deal with the singularities of P- or S-wavefront elements, the element subdivision method is used to identify non-zero valued sub-elements on the wavefronts, and the non-zero valued sub-elements containing source points are solved by the power series expansion method, which achieves the effect of obtaining satisfactory accuracy with fewer Gaussian points. In the present scheme, the non-uniform rational B-Spline (NURBS) basis functions are used to determine the physical coordinates of each sub-element with very high precision. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme can effectively implement a high-precision singular time-space integral solution under a unified framework. In addition, this paper uses the time-weighting method to improve the time integration algorithm to solve the instability problem. The validity and accuracy of the algorithm are verified by dynamics examples of the finite elastic body and infinite elastic body, and the effects of different weight points and integration schemes in the time-weighting method on the stability are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for large-scale elastodynamics problems is also examined using the 27 spherical cavities problem.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with numerical solutions of time-fractional nonlinear parabolic problems by a class of L1-Galerkin finite element methods. The analysis of L1 methods for time-fractional nonlinear problems is limited mainly due to the lack of a fundamental Gronwall type inequality. In this paper, we establish such a fundamental inequality for the L1 approximation to the Caputo fractional derivative. In terms of the Gronwall type inequality, we provide optimal error estimates of several fully discrete linearized Galerkin finite element methods for nonlinear problems. The theoretical results are illustrated by applying our proposed methods to the time fractional nonlinear Huxley equation and time fractional Fisher equation.

Abstract:Laplace- and Helmholtz-type boundary value problems with singularities are considered. A sequence of approximations to the exact boundary conditions at an artificial boundary is given. Then the original problem is reduced to a boundary value problem in a domain away from the singularities. Furthermore, finite-element approximations are applied to this problem and error estimates are obtained. Finally, some numerical examples show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the finite element method (FEM) to solve the time-space fractional Bloch-Torrey equation on irregular domains in R3. Based on linear Lagrange basis functions, a space semi-discrete FEM scheme is given. By adopting the L2−1σ approximation for the Caputo fractional derivative, a fully discrete scheme is presented. Furthermore, we provide the details on how to implement our FEM for the space fractional Bloch-Torrey equation. Also, the stability and convergence of the fully discrete scheme is investigated. The error estimations with respect to the L2 and energy norms are given. In addition, some numerical examples are presented to verify the efficiency of our method.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a split-step finite element method (FEM) for the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with Riesz fractional derivatives in space. The space-fractional NLS is first spatially discretized by finite element scheme and the semi-discrete variational scheme is obtained. We prove that it maintains the mass and energy conservation laws. Then, we establish a fully discrete split-step finite element scheme for the considered problem, which avoids the iteration at each time layer, thereby significantly reducing computational cost. The discrete mass conservation property and error estimate of this split-step finite element scheme is derived. Finally, illustrative tests and the numerical simulation of dynamic of wave solutions are included to confirm its effectiveness and capability.

Abstract:In this paper, a new one-dimensional space-fractional Boussinesq equation is proposed. Two novel numerical methods with a nonlocal operator (using nodal basis functions) for the space-fractional Boussinesq equation are derived. These methods are based on the finite volume and finite element methods, respectively. Finally, some numerical results using fractional Boussinesq equation with the maximally positive skewness and the maximally negative skewness are given to demonstrate the strong potential of these approaches. The novel simulation techniques provide excellent tools for practical problems. These new numerical models can be extended to two- and three-dimensional fractional space-fractional Boussinesq equations in future research where we plan to apply these new numerical models for simulating the tidal water table fluctuations in a coastal aquifer.
