[Poly(styryl)phenanthroline]palladium Catalyst. Synthesis and Some of Its Applications in Vinylic Substitution Reactions with Organic Halides

Abstract:A polymer-bound phenanthroline palladium catalyst, -ph-phen -Pd (reduced), has been synthesized although the precise form of the Pd has not yet been established unambiguously. The catalyst is very stable to air and moisture and can be stored for long periods. It was characterized by IR, DRS, ESCA, electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. The catalyst showed high activity for vinylic substitution reactions of iodobenzene with olefins. In general, smaller amounts of catalyst were used than those in homogeneous reactions, while the yields were about equal or a little higher. The catalyst can be recovered and reused, with tributylamine as the base: however, the catalytic activity was dramatically reduced after three runs as a result of leaching of palladium from the polymer support. Bromobenzene can also be induced to react with styrene using this catalyst in the absence of phosphine ligands.

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:Alkyne-based click polymerizations have been well-established. However, in order to expand the family to synthesize polymers with new structures and novel properties, new types of click polymerizations are highly demanded. In this study, for the first time, we established a new efficient and powerful phenol-yne click polymerization. The activated diynes and diphenols could be facilely polymerized in the presence of the Lewis base catalyst of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) under mild reaction conditions. Regio-and stereoregular poly(vinylene ether ketone)s (PVEKs) with high molecular weights (up to 35200) were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99.0 %). The reaction mechanism was well explained under the assistance of density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Furthermore, since the vinyl ether sequence acts as a stable but acid-liable linkage, the polymers could be decomposed under acid conditions, rendering them applicable in biomedical and environmental fields.

Abstract:The "thio-click" polymerization is a well-expanded concept of click polymerization. Among the click polymerizations, the thiol-yne click polymerization is less developed and still in its infancy stage. In general, UV light, elevated temperature, amine, or transition metal complexes is needed to catalyze the thiol-yne click polymerization, which greatly complicates the experimental operation and limits its application. In this work, a facile and powerful thiol-yne click polymerization was developed, which could be carried out under very mild conditions without using external catalyst. Simply mixing the aromatic diynes (1a-1e) and dithiols (2-4) with equivalent molar ratio in THF at 30 degrees C will readily produce soluble and regioregular functional poly(vinylene sulfide)s (PIa-PIe, PII, and PIII) with high molecular weights (M-w, up to 85 200) in excellent yields (up to 97%) after as short as 2 h. Furthermore, no double addition product of an ethynyl group was found. This catalyst-free thiol-yne click polymerization has remarkably simplified the reaction conditions and will facilitate the preparation of functional materials applied in diverse areas.

Abstract:A series of imido-vanadium complexes containing bulky aryloxo ligand have been isolated and employed as catalyst in ethylene (co)polymerization. The introduction of bulky ligand in the vanadium complex structure could promote the thermal stability of catalyst in ethylene polymerization. Especially the corresponding catalysts remain good activity in the ethylene copolymerization with polar monomers such as 10-undecen-1-ol (UOH) and methyl 10-undecenoate (UA). In the attempted copolymerization with acrylate monomer, the vanadium catalysts still show moderate activity but only afford polyethylene.

Abstract:Fast, atom-economical, phosphine-free, and eco-friendly microwave-irradiated reactions permitting the "green synthesis" of 5,6-disubstituted imidazo[2,1- b ]thiadiazole derivatives using heterogeneous palladium catalyst in triethylammonium 2-(1,1-dioxido-3-oxobenzo[ d ]isothiazol-2(3H)-yl)acetate ([Et 3 NH][Sac-CH 3 CO 2 ]) ionic liquid via CH bond activation reaction of 6-substituted imidazo[2,1- b ]thiadiazole derivatives, are reported. This method provides a straightforward route to a wide variety of substituted imidazo[2,1- b ]thiadiazoles and has the advantages of reusability of the heterogeneous catalyst, simple methodology, high yields, and easy work-up.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed fluorosulfonylvinylation reaction of organic iodides is described. Catalytic Pd(OAc)2 with a stoichiometric amount of silver(I) trifluoroacetate enables the coupling process between either an (hetero)aryl or alkenyl iodide with ethenesulfonyl fluoride (ESF). The method is demonstrated in the successful syntheses of eighty-eight otherwise difficult to access compounds, in up to 99 % yields, including the unprecedented 2-heteroarylethenesulfonyl fluorides and 1,3-dienylsulfonyl fluorides.

Abstract:The effects of different bases on Heck arylation catalyzed by the polymeric catalyst have been studied. The yield of product and the lifetime of the catalyst are influenced by the nature of the base used. The leaching of palladium from the polymeric catalyst is caused mainly by the competitive complexation of the ligands existing in the reaction media towards the metal. When tributylamine is replaced by DMF-H2O-NaOAc, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused, the yields are higher and the products are found to be more pure. For the reaction of acrylamide with iodobenzene, even after ten consecutive runs the recovered catalyst still has high catalytic activity. In the DMF-H2O-NaOAc system, the catalyst can also tolerate the presence of a variety of functional groups; acrylamide could be introduced to react with substituted iodobenzenes in good yields.

Abstract:The Merrifield resin-supported diphenylphosphinobiphenyl ligand via an ether linkage was successfully prepared. Complexation with allylpalladium chloride dimer afforded the polymer-supported catalyst, which exhibits good activities for the Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. A range of aryl iodides and bromides can couple with phenylboronic acid to provide the respective biaryls. The resin-bound catalysts can be recycled for five times without obvious decline in activity.

Abstract:The potential of (2-bromoethyl)diphenylsulfonium triflate to be a powerful vinylation reagent was determined by the Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions with terminal alkynes. The vinylation proceeded smoothly at 25 °C under Pd/Cu catalysis to afford a variety of 1- and 2-unsubstituted 1,3-enynes in moderate to excellent yields. Abstract:A highly enantioselective palladium-catalyzed iodine atom transfer cycloisomerization of unactivated alkenes has been developed. This represents the first example of highly enantioselective carboiodination of olefin-tethered aryl iodides, which provides a perfect atom economy method to construct a series of optically active 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, indolines and chromane bearing an alkyl iodide group in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the use of readily available starting materials, a broad substrate scope, high selectivity, mild reaction conditions, as well as versatile transformation of the product make this approach attractive. The mechanism of this Pd(0)-catalyzed asymmetric carboiodination of alkenes has been investigated with density functional theory.

Abstract:An excellent chemo- and regioselective palladium-catalyzed cascade intermolecular N-arylation/aryl-aryl coupling process has been developed. Employing Pd(TFA)2, PCy3•HBF4, K2CO3 and 1,4-dioxane in an oil bath at 100°C for 12 h, diverse C4-substituted phenanthridinones are synthesized from o-bromobenzamides in 42-92% yield. Broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance are observed. The synthetic utility of this method is illustrated by the further derivatization to prepare multiple-substituted phenanthridinones in 30-75% yield.

Abstract:Bearing the merits of convenient functionalization and versatile framework composition, hypercrosslinked polymers are employed as promising candidates in green catalysis. In this study, a new hypercrosslinked polymer supported palladium catalyst has been synthesized based on pyrrole functionalization from triphenyl benzene and pyrrole via Scholl reaction and palladium anchoring on the polymer surface. The structure of prepared Pd catalyst was confirmed by TEM, SEM, EDX, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, solid state 13C NMR, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, and ICP analyses. The novel complex can be served as an effective catalyst for the preparation of biphenyl compounds with the yields up to 100 % in EtOH: H2O (1:1) at 60 °C by using 0.07 mol% of catalyst in air. More importantly, the catalyst also has significant advantages in terms of facile availability of raw materials, chemical and thermal stability, and cost-effective synthesis. Due to the high specific surface area, and the coordination of pyrrole groups with palladium on the surface of this polymer, this catalyst could effectively prevent palladium leaching (<1.1 %). Furthermore, the catalyst could be recovered by simple centrifugation for four consecutive times. The study provides new insight into the immobilization of palladium on such polymer surface in other heterogeneous catalysis systems.

Abstract:An attractive and novel methodology involving Pd/Cu-catalyzed tandem head-to-tail dimerization/ cycloisomerization of terminal ynamides for the synthesis of 3,5-disubstituted oxazolones was developed. Under Pd(PPh3)(2)Cl-2/CuI cooperative catalyzed reaction conditions, it provided efficient access to 5-vinyloxazolones with exceptional functional group tolerance and good chemoselectivity. The control experiments demonstrated that Pd(PPh3)(2)Cl-2 serves a key role in the dimerization of terminal ynamides and shows low catalytic activity in the intramolecular cyclization. Moreover, the hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of product 5-vinyloxazolones was also described, which provided polycyclic oxazolones in good yield.
