Abstract:The selection of the type of the structured beam is great importance in the study of optical and first-order rainbow scattering by a particle. The Airy light-sheet is a specific type of limited-diffracting beam (in 2D), which has been used in investigations related to radiation forces and torque. Equally important and of practical significance is the study of the electromagnetic/optical resonance and first-order rainbow scattering by a dielectric sphere. The purpose of this paper is to calculate the electromagnetic resonance scattering, energy efficiencies and far-field scattered intensity of a lossless homogeneous dielectric spherical particle of arbitrary size, illuminated by a linearly-polarized non-diffracting electromagnetic Airy light-sheet. A rigorous parametric study is undertaken here to investigate the effect of varying the light-sheet parameters γ, kw0, and its polarization state as well as the size parameter ka of the lossless dielectric sphere on the scattering efficiencies and intensity. The analysis is extended to examine the first-order rainbow scattering phenomenon in the context of Airy light-sheets with different polarizations. Numerical results show that kw0, γ, ka and the state of polarization affect the amplitude and scattering directivity patterns of the efficiencies and intensity. Rainbow scattering arises along the polar scattering angle θ=143°, and is minimally influenced by the different values of the parameters kw0, γ, polarization, and ka. The results are of some practical significance in optical resonance scattering and related applications in optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, particle characterization, and the measurement of temperature, velocity and size of a liquid jet to name a few applications.
Analysis of Rainbow Scattering by A Chiral Sphere

Abstract:Based on the scattering theory of a chiral sphere, rainbow phenomenon of a chiral sphere is numerically analyzed in this paper. For chiral spheres illuminated by a linearly polarized wave, there are three first-order rainbows, with whose rainbow angles varying with the chirality parameter. The spectrum of each rainbow structure is presented and the ripple frequencies are found associated with the size and refractive indices of the chiral sphere. Only two rainbow structures remain when the chiral sphere is illuminated by a circularly polarized plane wave. Finally, the rainbows of chiral spheres with slight chirality parameters are found appearing alternately in E-plane and H-plane with the variation of the chirality.

Abstract:Rainbow refractometry has been used in the past to measure size and refractive index of spherical particles, typically droplets in a spray. In the present study, conventional optical configurations for point measurements or line measurements have been extended to allow also the particle position in a plane to be determined, and hence, the designation planar rainbow refractometry. However, this extension introduces challenges in accurately calibrating the 2D scattering angles with the image coordinates. This challenge has been met using a novel calibration method, employing a monodispersed droplet stream traversed through the measurement plane. Experiments confirm achievable horizontal and vertical position accuracies of 0.42 mm and 0.36 mm, respectively, and a refractive index uncertainty of 2 × 10 − 4 .

Abstract:The rainbow patterns of oblate spheroidal drops have been observed in experiments nearly forty years ago [Nature312, 529 (1984)10.1038/312529a0]. However, the prediction for those complex patterns has been a challenge for conventional light scattering models. The vectorial complex ray model (VCRM) allows to account for the direction, the polarization, the phase, the amplitude and the wavefront curvature of waves and provides a powerful tool for the study of the light/electromagnetic wave interaction with a homogeneous object of any shape with smooth surface. In [Opt. Lett.46, 4585 (2021)10.1364/OL.434149], the authors have reported an important breakthrough of VCRM for the three-dimensional scattering (VCRM3D) and the simulated rainbow patterns of oblate drops. The present paper is devoted to the detailed description of the numerical implementation allowing the simulation of the 3D scattering field by a nonspherical particle. Its ability to predict both the fine and coarse intensity structures of the rainbows and the near-backward scattering patterns of spheroids is demonstrated. This work opens perspectives for exploring the 3D scattering characteristics of large objects with any smooth shape and developing relevant optical techniques for particle characterization.
Stray light simulation and control in imaging systems including diffraction elements

Abstract:Some imaging optical systems include diffraction elements, both the even reflected stray light and multi-order diffraction stray light need to be considered at the image. They are related to the reflectivity and diffraction efficiency of optical surfaces. In this paper the binary tree is employed to describe the multifurcating tree in which each sampling ray's information is kept. According to the multi-order diffraction efficiency, paraxial ray and real sampling rays are traced, and the calculating results are applied to analyze the stray light in optical systems including diffraction components, and then the stray light energy distribution at any space especially at the image can be obtained. A new calculated wavelength is used to replace the designing wavelength for binary optical elements to calculate the reflected diffraction stray light. Based on the principles above, the stray light analysis software is developed. By tracing and analyzing all sampling rays the positions of ghosts are shown, especially at image surface. In this procedure, the first surface of the system serves as the entrance pupil or stop, instead of the entrance pupil in original imaging system, so as to collect all sampling rays from all direction, in or out the field of view, and then all possible ghosts are obtained. According to the simulation, the glare shields or control methods can be designed.

Abstract:This paper extends the Fraunhofer diffraction theory for multiple slits to realistic image synthesis. By incorporating a diffraction term of grating in Whitted's illumination model, we derive a new illumination model which can simulate some natural phenomena depicted only by wave optics, such as the rainbow patterns on the gratings, which are never generated by traditional illumination models.

Abstract:This work proposed a synthetic aperture rainbow refractometry (SARR) by synthesizing rainbow signals of the same droplet with dual-wavelength laser beams, in order to increase the aperture of rainbow refractometry. In this way, the SARR can apply to long distance and small droplets measurement. An achromatic imaging system, which simultaneously records while separating the two rainbow signals in two channels of a color image, is elaborately designed. A data processing algorithm is developed to retrieve the optimal droplet refractive index and size. Numerical simulations of different droplet sizes from 10 mu m to 200 mu m certify the viability of the SARR. Proof-of-concept experiments of micron-sized ethanol droplets are performed with 1650 mm measurement distance. Results show that the SARR can accurately measure droplet refractive index and size with uncertainties of 2.3 x 10(-4 )and 2 mu m, respectively. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed SARR are successfully demonstrated, paving the way for rainbow refractometry applied to large-scale industrial applications. Abstract:Polarization state of only completely polarized light can be analyzed by some software, ZEMAX for example. Based on principles of geometrical optics, novel descriptions of the light with different polarization state are provided in this paper. Differential calculus is well used for saving the polarization state and amplitudes of sampling rays when ray tracing. The polarization state changes are analyzed in terms of several typical circumstances, such as Brewster incidence, total reflection. Natural light and partially polarized light are discussed as an important aspect. Further more, a computing method including composition and decomposition of sampling rays at each surface is also set up to analyze the energy transmission of the rays for optical systems. Adopting these analysis methods mentioned, not only the polarization state changes of the incident rays can be obtained, but also the energy distributions can be calculated. Since the energy distributions are obtained, the surface with the most energy loss will be found in the optical system. The energy value and polarization state of light reaching the image surface will also be available. These analysis methods are very helpful for designing or analyzing optical systems, such as analyzing the energy of stray light in high power optical systems, researching the influences of optical surfaces to rays' polarization state in polarization imaging systems and so on.

Abstract:Accurate measurement of droplet size, temperature and concentration in sprays is of great importance but still challenging in applications. The secondary rainbow refractometry is investigated in this work to measure refractive index and size of transparent spherical droplets, with better sensitivity than the first rainbow. Inversion algorithm of the secondary rainbow is used and validated through processing the secondary rainbow signals simulated by the Lorenz-Mie theory. The secondary rainbow refractometry is applied to measure monodispersed spherical droplets of ethanol and N-heptane with different diameters in the isothermal conditions. Measured refractive indices of both liquids are 1.3621 and 1.3950 with diameter of about 145 mu m and uncertainty of size measurement is down to 1 mu m with RMS error of 0.3 mu m. Compared with results from the microscopic imaging, the maximum of deviation as well as the relative error are within several microns and 4%. This work confirms the feasibility and high accuracy of the secondary rainbow refractometry in spherical droplet size and refractive index measurement at room temperature of about 300K.

Abstract:In this paper we outline a new all-optical non-contact technique for measurement of the surface tension of a Newtonian fluid. It is based on the accurate measurement of the spacing of the supernumerary fringes produced by the diffraction pattern of a laser beam transmitted through or reflected by a thin vertically-draining film of the liquid. We discuss the basic theory and application of this technique, and several issues which must be addressed before it can be used commercially.

Abstract:Topological photonics provides a robust platform for the study of nanophotonic devices. The topological rainbow can be used to separate, slow, and trap topological photonic states of different frequencies at different positions. Although numerous reports have investigated the construction of traditional rainbow devices, limited methods have been proposed to realize topological rainbow phenomena and devices. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of the basic concept and mechanisms of rainbow trapping. A topological rainbow is discussed in terms of the implementation of synthetic dimensions. Additionally, recent advances of the topological rainbow are presented for elastic and acoustic waves. We introduce current physical methods of realizing the topological rainbow and discuss potential applications in physics and engineering.

Abstract:Based on Fermat’s Principle, a set of formulae for ray tracing through diffractive optical elements is derived in this paper. These formulae do not involve the calculation of local fringe spacing and direction, and take a simple, Snell’s-Law-like form. Yet they are completely general, and can be applied to diffractive optical elements with arbitrary continuous phase function formed on substrates of arbitrary shape. Then the concept of the extended Snell’s law, which is applicable to any kind of surfaces, is presented, and so make it easy to improve the traditional optical program into a hybrid one with the ability to design and analyze diffractive and hybrid elements. Some testing experiments have been made by using a diffractive optical lens with large astigmatism. The computational results are compared with experimental data, and the correctness of the formulae is verified.

Abstract:Since the dawn of modern optics and electromagnetics, the optical prism is one of the most fascinating optical elements for refracting light. Exploiting its frequency dispersive behavior, a prism is able to refract different frequencies in different directions, realizing polychromatic light rainbows. Recently, thanks to their engineerable electromagnetic response, metamaterials have been exploited for achieving novel refractive scattering processes, going beyond the classical prism effects. In this Letter, we report on a rainbow-like scattering process taking place at the interface of a boundary-induced temporal metamaterial realized by instantaneously opening the boundary conditions of a parallel plate waveguide. Changing abruptly the conductivity of one of the two metallic plates, we demonstrate that an equivalent temporal interface between two different media is realized, and the monochromatic wave propagating into the waveguide gets scattered into a polychromatic rainbow in free space. We derive the relationships between the waveguide mode and the raising rainbow in terms of scattered amplitude and frequencies as a function of the elevation angle with respect to the waveguide axis. We apply the underlying physics to control the temporal rainbow by imposing a principal direction of scattering by design. Full-wave numerical simulations are performed for computing the rainbow temporal scattering and verifying the design guidelines for achieving controlled temporal rainbow scattering.

Abstract:As a classical concept in the research of scattering randomness, the relationship between scattering entropy and depolarization is commonly used to analyse the polarization properties in substances, which is quanlified by a two-dimensional plane, called E–D relation plane. From the observation of lots of experiments, there is a region without any distribution of entropy and depolarization in E–D relation plane. Based on this phenomenon, this paper adds the scattering anisotropy into E–D relation and aims to analyse the relationship between depolarization and scattering anisotropy in different cases. Through the numerical approximation, a series of significant expressions are deduced to represent this relationship. The correctness and reasonability of the analysis process are verified both by numerical simulations (including evenly-spaced-sample simulation and Monte Carlo simulation) and experiments. This paper reveals the physical law between depolarization and scattering anisotropy, extending the E–D relation to three-dimensional space. Furthermore, this paper provides a creative analysis process for the research of scattering randomness in theory. With the analysis between depolarzation and anisotropy, the polarization property in substances can be reflected more clearly.

Abstract:Based on geometrical optics (GO), this paper develops a representation theory of multiple specular reflections from perfect electric conducting target with an arbitrary patchwise smooth surface. In the course of rays' multiple reflections, the polarization of each ray is found to change in a manner consistent with the variations of its propagating direction, which can be described with an equivalent 3-D rotation transformation. This transformation provides a new representation of the polarization rotation effect induced by multiple reflections. More importantly, the parameters of this transformation characterize the target's GO field response, and their values can classify six classes of geometrical structures. Furthermore, we derive explicit formulas relating these parameters to target's geometrical attributes for double and triple reflections, by using a quaternion algebra method. In order to validate this representation theory, we construct a parametric model of bistatic scattering from an arbitrary multiplate structure, by combining the GO–physical optics (PO) method with this representation. Through two special cases, the representation theory is validated by comparing the RCSs calculated by the parametric model with those by a shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) algorithm. The representation and derived concise parametric model are useful for extracting geometrically relevant features from bistatic radar measurement.
