Abstract:For aerial target detection,it is highly important to study the radiance of sky background.The model and method for calculating the radiance of sky are set up.The calculating formula is established by layered atmosphere.Combined with the formula,the calculating of absorption and scattering is discussed in detail.The absorption of vapor,carbon dioxide,ozone and the scattering of aerosol are mainly considered.At last,the absorption,the scattering,the transmission,the spectral radiance and the radiance of sky are calculated by typical data,furthermore,the results are compared with MODTRAN.And the features of the sky infrared radiation are analyzed.

Abstract:The efficiency and lumen output of light source for illumination system were analyzed based on Etendue, this analytical approach can predict light source collection efficiency. A new method for measuring the output intensity distribution of light source with elliptical reflector was put forward; the collection efficiency vs. Etendue curve was estimated with this technique. The Etendue was changed by moving the mobile aperture gradually and the intensity distributions were recorded by CCD camera in this measurement method. The method is very convenient and the experimental result matches well with the theoretical model.

Abstract:The pseudo-spectral time domain (PSTD) and the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) are two popular and robust methods for the numerical simulation of dielectric particle light scattering. The present study compares the numerical performances of the two methods in the computation of the single-scattering properties of homogeneous dielectric spheres and spheroids for which the exact solutions can be obtained from the Lorenz-Mie theory and the T-matrix theory. The accuracy criteria for the extinction efficiency and the phase function are prescribed to be the same for the PSTD and DDA in order that the computational time can be compared in a fair manner. The computational efficiency and applicability of the two methods are each shown to depend on both the size parameter and the refractive index of the scattering particle. For a small refractive index, a critical size parameter, which decreases from 80 to 30 as the refractive index increases from 1.2 to 1.4, exists below which the DDA outperforms the PSTD. For large refractive indices (>1.4), the PSTD is more efficient than the DDA for a wide size parameter range and has a larger region of applicability. Furthermore, the accuracy shown by the two methods in the computation of backscatter, linear polarization, and asymmetry factor is comparable. The comparison was extended to include spheroids with typical refractive indices of ice and dust and similar conclusions were drawn. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Scattering phase function is a very important physical parameter in lidar detection of multiple scattering returns.In this paper,scattering phase function of one particle radius is calculated by recursive formula of Mie theory.The result of forward and backward scattering peaks increase when the radius of particle has added according to the theory of scattering.At the same time,scattering phase function of non-one particle radius is calculated by recursive formula of Mie theory,which can use for research on multiple scattering of aerosols such as atmosphere,fog,clouds and so on.

Abstract:Sky conditions, and the corresponding luminance and radiance distribution patterns are essential to daylighting, energy and thermal environmental studies. The CIE Standard Skies define the overcast, partly cloudy, and clear sky conditions intuitively by rigorous luminance distributions, which are, however, usually determined by sophisticated and uncommon measurements (e.g. radiation in multiple vertical directions). This study proposes a simple approach to identifying the hourly sky conditions from the global horizontal irradiance (EHG) that is most widely accessible in weather stations with basic radiation measurement facilities. The sophisticated measurements are, therefore, avoided for simple applications. The partly cloudy sky, especially, is identified by the notable disparity of its EHG measurement from the theoretical cloudless condition. The proposed approach interprets the ISO/CIE Standard Sky conditions and their diffuse luminance and radiance distributions successfully. From the datasets at two sites with different climates, the approach correctly identifies 7% more sky conditions than a previous work when the direct beam and diffuse radiation measurements were not accessible. The model can thus be essential to solar energy studies for places with ground-based solar radiation measurements only.

Abstract:A new system has been developed and calibrated to measure the characteristics and distribution of skylight polarization. With a series of measurements obtained, we verified that the distribution of degree and angle of skylight polarization accords well with the predictions of Rayleigh scattering. The differences of the characteristics and distribution of skylight polarization across the principal plane owning to measurements' errors have been analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple all-weather sky radiance model (diffuse component). The model development was motivated by the intention to find a balance between the model's simplicity and ease of use on the one side and predictive capability on the other side. To develop the model, measured data collected at the microclimatic monitoring station of our institute (the Department of Building Physics and Building Ecology of the Vienna University of Technology) was deployed. To formulate the model, a formalism based on the concept of irradiance coefficient was used. Irradiance coefficient denotes, in percentage, the fraction of global horizontal irradiance attributable to a distinct sky patch. Thus, the developed model can be used to estimate the contributions of a set of discrete sky patches toward the overall global horizontal irradiance. The irradiance coefficient is estimated as a function of a number of salient variables related to sky Clearness Factor (an original function of the sky Clearness Index), angular distance of the observed patch from the sun patch, and observed patch altitude. The performance of the resulting model was assessed against a separate set of measurements. The comparison displayed good agreement.

Abstract:Sky-luminance distribution is the basic requirement for daylighting calculations and design. It is also important for describing and defining the different sky types. However, owing to the lack of test equipment and measurement data, research on sky-luminance distribution in China has been limited. Therefore, for the first time, we have obtained the sky-luminance distribution data using our self-developed spectrum sky scanner from observations over 12 months. Furthermore, we have established a relationship between the actual sky types of Beijing and the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage standard sky model. These data are very important in the study of the daylight climate of China.

Abstract:A novel method is developed to study the relation between scatterometer scattering and surface scattering, which shows that they can be expressed by an equivalent image formation process with the convolution law. Based on the physical concepts, a scatterometer is constructed and a polished silicon wafer is measured. The power spectrum density function and the autocorrelation function of the surface roughness are calculated from the measured data by the application of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of the atmospheric scattering phase function is difficult to perform since most observational techniques are limited to daylight hours. Among known aerosol optical properties, only atmospheric optical depth (AOD) is measured routinely during clear nights at a few ground stations. In this paper we develop theoretical and experimental techniques to retrieve the scattering phase function from radiometry of a laser beam whose light is scattered in the lower nocturnal atmosphere. The field experiment we conducted in a night environment demonstrates the capability of the method to determine in real‐world settings. We show that extracting the scattering phase function from radiance data is realizable over a wide range of angles, which makes possible the use of an analytical extrapolation to approximate across the full range of scattering angles.

Abstract:We present an algorithm that estimates a clear sky performance signal from the measured power of a PV system. The algorithm uses only observed power output, and assumes no knowledge of weather, irradiance data, or system configuration metadata. This is a novel approach to understanding the clear sky behavior of an installed PV system, that does not rely on traditional atmospheric and geometric modeling techniques.

Abstract:An approach to a two-dimensional vector thermal radiative transfer equation for a layer of spatially inhomogeneous atmospheric rain and cloud is developed. By using the Fourier transformation in discrete form and matrix expression, 1-D radiative transfer equation is derived. Employing an iterative approach, the zeroth- and first-order solutions from integral radiative transfer equation are obtained. Numerical results of polarized brightness temperature of atmospheric rain and cloud with a Gaussian fractional volume are obtained. The functional dependence of brightness temperature to inhomogeneous scale, frequency, polarization, and other parameters are discussed.
A revised simplified scattering model for the moonlit sky brightness profile based on photometry at SAAO

Abstract:This paper presents multi-filter measurements of the night sky brightness at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Sutherland in the presence of a bright moon. The observations cover a wide range of sky directions, lunar phases and lunar positions. A revised simplified scattering model is developed for estimating the sky brightness due to moonlight that more accurately reflects the atmospheric extinction of the lunar beam compared to models frequently applied in astronomical studies. Contributions to night sky brightness due to sources other than moonlight are quantified and subtracted from the total sky background radiation to determine the spectral intensity and angular distribution of scattered moonlight. The atmospheric scattering phase function is then derived by comparing the sky brightening to the strength of the incoming lunar beam, estimated using a novel approach. The phase function is shown to be an excellent match to the combined theoretical Rayleigh and Mie scattering functions, the latter with a Henyey--Greenstein form instead of the exponential angular relationship often used in previous studies. Where deviations between measured and model sky brightness are evident in some bands these are explained by contributions from multiple scattering or airglow, and are quantified accordingly. The model constitutes an effective tool to predict sky brightness at SAAO in optical photometric bands, especially with a bright moon present. The methodology can also be readily be adapted for use at other astronomical sites. The paper furthermore presents $UBV(RI)_c$ and Str{ö}mgren photometry for 49 stars, most with no prior such data.

Abstract:Identification of atmospheric precipitation and different Earth surfaces and algorithms of the parameter retrieval have been extensively studied during the course of SSM/I calibration/validation effort. However, we have found that some conventional algorithms are not valid in many applications due to their empirical restriction. We have developed the vector radiative transfer modeling at SSM/I channels for Earth surfaces such as snow/vegetation, rough sea surface, scattering media of sea ice, etc., and derived several new algorithms from theoretical simulations to invert some parameters from SSM/I data. Our retrieval results and analysis are well compared with the ground truth data measurements

Abstract:In the intra-hour time scale, shielding of solar radiation by clouds is the main reason for the fluctuation of photovoltaic, so cloud parameters are important for intra-hour solar irradiance and photovoltaic power forecasting. Extracting cloud regions from cloud images provides a basis for quantifying cloud size and shape. It is difficult to detect clouds in these three cases, such as clouds in circumsolar region, clouds in haze weather and thin clouds at cloud edge. Aiming at such problems, this study firstly establishes a clear sky library based on pixel-level sun positions and haze conditions to deal with the complex changes of sky brightness. Then this study proposes a cloud detection method for ground-based images, which performs two segmentations on the cloud image. The initial segmentation process is a combination method that uses clear sky library method when the sun is visible and uses adaptive threshold method when the sun is occluded. The secondary segmentation process is based on superpixels and local threshold method, which restores some thin clouds that are easily ignored. Finally, for the influence of ghosts, this study summarizes the position and color features of ghosts, and uses different color channel information to deal with them.

Abstract:Radiance and polarization patterns in an optically deep region, the so-called diffusion region or asymptotic region, of a homogeneous atmosphere or ocean, depend mainly on the scattering phase matrix and the single-scattering albedo of the medium. The radiance and polarization properties in the diffusion region for an arbitrary scattering phase matrix can be obtained in terms of a series of the generalized spherical functions. The number of terms is closely related to the single-scattering albedo of the medium. If the medium is conservative, the radiance is isotropic in conjunction with no polarization. If the single-scattering albedo is close to 1, several terms are sufficient to obtain the patterns, in which the degree of polarization feature is less than 1%. If the medium is highly absorptive, more expansion terms are required to obtain the diffusion patterns. The examples of simulated radiance and polarization patterns for Rayleigh scattering, Henyey–Greenstein–Rayleigh scattering, and haze L and cloud C1 scattering, defined by Deirmendjian, are calculated.

Abstract:The first and second-order iterative solutions of the scalar radiative transfer equation for a layer of random non-spherical particles are derived. An iterative method for retrievals of the Legendre coefficients of the phase function linking with the physical parameters of small spheroids is developed. Using two measurements of azimuth distribution of bistatic scattering, the dielectric constant of random small spheroids and number of particles per unit area are iteratively inverted.

Abstract:We tackle the problem of modeling light scattering in homogeneous translucent material and estimating its scattering parameters. A scattering phase function is one of such parameters which affects the distribution of scattered radiation. It is the most complex and challenging parameter to be modeled in practice, and empirical phase functions are usually used. Empirical phase functions (such as Henyey-Greenstein (HG) phase function or its modified ones) are usually presented and limited to a specific range of scattering materials. This limitation raises concern for an inverse rendering problem where the target material is generally unknown. In such a situation, a more general phase function is preferred. Although there exists such a general phase function in the polynomial form using a basis such as Legendre polynomials \cite{Fowler1983}, inverse rendering with this phase function is not straightforward. This is because the base polynomials may be negative somewhere, while a phase function cannot. This research presents a novel general phase function that can avoid this issue and an inverse rendering application using this phase function. The proposed phase function was positively evaluated with a wide range of materials modeled with Mie scattering theory. The scattering parameters estimation with the proposed phase function was evaluated with simulation and real-world experiments.
