Abstract:The $N$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are the maximally entangled states of $N$ qubits, which have had many important applications in quantum information processing, such as quantum key distribution and quantum secret sharing. Thus how to distinguish the GHZ states from other quantum states becomes a significant problem. In this work, by presenting a family of the generalized Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, we show that the $N$-qubit GHZ states can be indeed identified by the maximal violations of the generalized CHSH inequality under some specific measurement settings. The generalized CHSH inequality is simple and contains only four correlation functions for any $N$-qubit system, thus has the merit of facilitating experimental verification. Furthermore, we present a quantum phenomenon of robust violations of the generalized CHSH inequality, in which the maximal violation of Bell's inequality can be robust under some specific noises adding to the $N$-qubit GHZ states.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is the key resource for quantum information processing. Device-independent certification of entangled states is a long standing open question, which arouses the concept of self-testing. The central aim of self-testing is to certify the state and measurements of quantum systems without any knowledge of their inner workings, even when the used devices cannot be trusted. Specifically, utilizing Bell’s theorem, one can infer the appearance of certain entangled state when the maximum violation is observed, e.g., to self-test singlet state using CHSH inequality. In this work, by constructing a versatile entanglement source, we experimentally demonstrate a generalized self-testing proposal for various bipartite entangled states up to four dimensions. We show that the high-quality generated states can approach the maximum violations of the utilized Bell inequalities, and thus, their Schmidt coefficients can be precisely inferred by self-testing them into respective target states with near-unity fidelities. Our results indicate the superior completeness and robustness of this method and promote self-testing as a practical tool for developing quantum techniques.

Abstract:We propose a new method for detecting entanglement of two qubits and discuss its relation with the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality. Without the need for full quantum tomography for the density matrix we can experimentally detect the entanglement by measuring less than 9 local observables for any given state. We show that this test is stronger than the CHSH-Bell inequality and also gives an estimation for the degree of entanglement. If prior knowledge is available we can further greatly reduce the number of required local observables. The test is convenient and feasible with present experimental technology.

Abstract:Using NMR techniques, we implemented the simulation of the violations of two Bell-type inequalities: Mermin–Ardehali–Belinskii–Klyshko (MABK) inequality and Chen's inequality, for the 3-qubit generalized GHZ states. The experimental results are in good agreement with the quantum predictions and show that Chen's inequality is more efficient than MABK inequality in the case of the generalized GHZ entangled states.

Abstract:The original Gisin's theorem states that all the entangled pure states of two qubits violate a single Bell's inequality, namely Clause-Horne-Shimony- Holt (CHSH) inequality. In this paper we show that all the entangled pure states for n particles also violate a single Bell's inequality, namely Hardy's inequality arising from Hardy's nonlocality test without inequality. Thus Gisin's theorem is proved in its most general form from which it follows that for pure states Bell's nonlocality and quantum entanglement are equivalent. In the sense of Gisin's theorem, Hardy's inequality can be regarded as a natural generalization of CHSH inequality.

Abstract:We use the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality to investigate the relationship among entanglement, purity and violation of the Bell inequality. On the one hand, we show numerically that all two-dimensional (qubit) states, whose entanglement of formation (EOF) is larger than 2 + root 2/4, violate the CHSH inequality. On the other hand, any state with purity smaller than 0.5562 may not violate it.

Abstract:Scientific imagination and experimental ingenuity are at the heart of physics. One of the most known instances where this interplay between theory (i.e., foundations) and experiments (i.e., technology) occurs is in the discussion of Bell's inequalities. In this paper, we present a revisitation of the violation of Bell's inequality in the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) form with entangled quantum states. First, we begin with a discussion of the 1935 Einstein-Podolski-Rosen (EPR) paradox (i.e., incompleteness of quantum mechanics) that emerges from putting the emphasis on Einstein's locality and the absolute character of physical phenomena. Second, we discuss Bell's 1971 derivation of the 1969 CHSH form of the original 1964 Bell inequality in the context of a realistic local hidden-variable theory (RLHVT). Third, identifying the quantum-mechanical spin correlation coefficient with the RLHVT one, we follow Gisin's 1991 analysis to show that quantum mechanics violates Bell's inequality when systems are in entangled quantum states. For pedagogical purposes, we show how the extent of this violation depends both on the orientation of the polarizers and the degree of entanglement of the quantum states. Fourth, we discuss the basics of the experimental verification of Bell's inequality in an actual laboratory as presented in the original 1982 Aspect-Grangier-Roger (AGR) experiment. Finally, we provide an outline of some essential take home messages from this wonderful example of physics at its best.

Abstract:Graph states-one of the most representative families of multipartite entangled states-are important resources for multiparty quantum communication, quantum error correction, and quantum computation. Device-independent certification of highly entangled graph states plays a prominent role in quantum information processing tasks. Here we have experimentally demonstrated device-independent certification for multipartite graph states by adopting the robust self-testing scheme based on scalable Bell inequalities. Specifically, the prepared multi-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and linear cluster states achieve a high degree of Bell violation, which are beyond the nontrivial bounds of the robust self-testing scheme. Furthermore, our work paves the way to the device-independent certification of complex multipartite quantum states.

Abstract:The effects of Aharonov-Casher (AC) and He-McKellar-Wilkens (HMW) phases on entangled spin-1/2 quantum systems are investigated. We use linear charge distributions positioned at the center of resulting closed orbits, capitalizing on Mach Zender-type interferometers modified with phase retarders to unveil the topological effects. We analyze how AC-HMW phases influence the Bell angles and maximal violation of Bell-CHSH inequalities (BI) without any classical interaction. We incorporate the spin and path of particles in the interferometers as observables to test noncontextual hidden variable theories against quantum mechanics, leveraging the non-local features of AC-HMW effects. Furthermore, we discuss potential implementations of our scheme in physical systems.

It also serves as a convincing demonstration that a given system behaves in a truly non-classical way. Abstract:Violation of the CHSH inequality supposedly demonstrates an irreconcilable conflict between quantum mechanics and local, realistic hidden variable theories. We show that the mathematical assumptions underlying the proof of the CHSH inequality are, in fact, incompatible with the physics of the experiments testing such inequality. This implies that we cannot dismiss local realistic hidden variable theories on the basis of currently available experimental data yet. However, we also show that an experimental proof of CHSH inequality is, in principle, possible, but it is unclear how to implement, in practice, such an experiment.

Abstract:Bell's inequality is established based on local realism. The violation of Bell's inequality by quantum mechanics implies either locality or realism or both are untenable. Leggett's inequality is derived based on nonlocal realism. The violation of Leggett's inequality implies that quantum mechanics is neither local realistic nor nonlocal realistic. The incompatibility of nonlocal realism and quantum mechanics has been urrently confirmed by photon experiments. In our work, we propose to test Leggett's inequality using the Aharonov-Casher effect. In our scheme, four entangled particles emitted from two sources manifest a two-qubit-typed correlation that may result in the violation of the Leggett inequality, while satisfying the no-signaling condition for spacelike separation. Our scheme is tolerant to some local inaccuracies due to the topological nature of the Aharonov-Casher phase. The experimental implementation of our scheme can be possibly realized by a calcium atomic polarization interferometer experiment.

Abstract:In this Letter, we study the quantum nature of non-Bunch–Davies states in de Sitter space by evaluating CHSH inequality on a localized two-atom system. We show that quantum nonlocality can be generated through the Markovian evolution of two-atom, witnessed by a violation of CHSH inequality on its final equilibrium state. We find that the upper bound of inequality violation is determined by different choices of de Sitter-invariant vacua sectors. In particular, with growing Gibbons–Hawking temperature, the CHSH bound degrades monotonously for Bunch–Davies vacuum sector. Due to the intrinsic correlation of non-Bunch–Davies vacua, we find that the related violation of inequality can however drastically increase after certain turning point, and may persist for arbitrarily large environment decoherence. This implies that the CHSH inequality is useful to classify the initial quantum state of the Universe. Finally, we clarify that the witnessed intrinsic correlation of non-Bunch–Davies vacua can be utilized for quantum information applications, e.g., surpassing the Heisenberg uncertainty bound of quantum measurement in de Sitter space.

Abstract:Optical hybrid entanglement can be created between two qubits, one encoded in a single photon and another one in coherent states with opposite phases. It opens the path to a variety of quantum technologies, such as heterogeneous quantum networks, merging continuous and discrete variable encoding, and enabling the transport and interconversion of information. However, reliable characterization of the nature of this entanglement is limited so far to full quantum state tomography. Here, we perform a thorough study of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality tests, enabling practical verification of quantum correlations for optical hybrid entanglement. We show that a practical violation of this inequality is possible with simple photon number on/off measurements if detection efficiencies stay above 82%. Another approach, based on photon-number parity measurements, requires 94% efficiency but works well in the limit of higher photon populations. Both tests use no postselection of the measurement outcomes and they are free of the fair-sampling hypothesis. Our proposal paves the way to performing loophole-free tests using feasible experimental tasks such as coherent state interference and photon counting, and to verification of hybrid entanglement in real-world applications.

Abstract:Nonlocality, evidenced by the violation of Bell inequalities, not only signifies entanglement but also highlights measurement incompatibility in quantum systems. Utilizing the generalized Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality, our high-efficiency optical setup achieves a loophole-free violation of $2.0132$. This result provides a device-independent lower bound on entanglement, quantified as the entanglement of formation at $0.0159$. Moreover, by tuning the parameters of the generalized Bell inequality, we enhance the estimation of measurement incompatibility, which is quantified by an effective overlap of $4.3883 \times 10^{-5}$. To explore the intricate interplay among nonlocality, entanglement, and measurement incompatibility, we generate mixed states, allowing for flexible modulation of entanglement via fast switching among the four Bell states using Pockels cells, achieving a fidelity above $99.10\%$. Intriguingly, our results reveal a counterintuitive relationship where increasing incompatibility initially boosts nonlocality but eventually leads to its reduction. Typically, maximal nonlocality does not coincide with maximal incompatibility. This experimental study sheds light on the optimal management of quantum resources for Bell-inequality-based quantum information processing.

Abstract:We devise a general setup to investigate the violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality in the vacuum state in the context of Quantum Field Theory. We test the method with massless spinor fields in $(1+1)$-dimensional Minkowski space-time. Alice's and Bob's test functions are explicitly constructed, first by employing Haar wavelets which are then bumpified into proper test functions via a smoothening procedure relying on the Planck-taper window function. Relativistic causality is implemented by requiring the support of Alice's and Bob's test functions to be located in the left and right Rindler wedges, respectively. Violations of the Bell-CHSH inequality as close as desired to Tsirelson's bound are reported. We briefly comment on the extra portal, compared to earlier works, this opens to scrutinize Bell-CHSH inequalities with generic, interacting Quantum Field Theories.

Testing Multipartite Entanglement with Hardy's Nonlocality

Abstract:Multipartite quantum states may exhibit different types of quantum entanglement in that they cannot be converted into each other by local quantum operations only, and fully understanding mathematical structures of different types of multipartite entanglement is a very challenging task. In this paper, from the viewpoint of Hardy's nonlocality, we compare W and GHZ states and show a couple of crucial different behaviors between them. Particularly, by developing a geometric model for the Hardy's nonlocality problem of W states, we derive an upper bound for its maximal violation probability, which turns out to be strictly smaller than the corresponding probability of GHZ state. This gives us a new comparison between these two quantum states, and the result is also consistent with our intuition that GHZ states is more entangled. Furthermore, we generalize our approach to obtain an asymptotic characterization for general $N$-qubit W states, revealing that when $N$ goes up, the speed that the maximum violation probabilities decay is exponentially slower than that of general $N$-qubit GHZ states. We provide some numerical simulations to verify our theoretical results.
