Abstract:Bell's theorem states that no local hidden-variable model is compatible with quantum mechanics. Surprisingly, even if we release the locality constraint, certain nonlocal hidden-variable models, such as the one proposed by Leggett, may still be at variance with the predictions of quantum physics. Here, we report an experimental test of Leggett's nonlocal model with solid-state spins in a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center. We entangle an electron spin with a surrounding weakly coupled C-13 nuclear spin and observe that the entangled states violate Leggett-type inequalities by more than four and seven standard deviations for six and eight measurement settings, respectively. Our experimental results are in full agreement with quantum predictions and violate Leggett's nonlocal hidden-variable inequality with a high level of confidence.

Abstract: We use two different approaches to derive multipartite Leggett-type inequalities, which are generalizations of the two-qubit Leggett-type inequality obtained in [Nature Phys. \textbf{4}, 681 (2008)]. The first approach is based on the assumption that the probability distributions should be non-negative. The second approach is based on a very simple algebraic equation and is, to some extent, easier than the first approach. Although these inequalities might not be the optimal ones in the sense that their quantum violations may not be the strongest, our results make the first step of generalizing Leggett-type inequality to multi-qubit systems and provide the possibility to experimentally test non-local realism in such systems. Moreover, the two approaches here may shed new light on the challenging problem of obtaining stronger multipartite Leggett-type inequalities.

Based on the philosophical assumptions of macrorealism and noninvasive measurability, Leggett and Garg devised a series of inequalities (LG inequalities) involving a single system with a set of measurements at different times. Introduced as the Bell inequalities in time, the violation of LG inequalities excludes the hidden-variable description based on the above two assumptions. We experimentally investigated the single photon LG inequalities under decoherence simulated by birefringent media. These generalized LG inequalities test the evolution trajectory of the photon and are shown to be maximally violated in a coherent evolution process. The violation of LG inequalities becomes weaker with the increase of interaction time in the environment. The ability to violate the LG inequalities can be used to set a boundary of the classical realistic description.

Abstract:Leggett formulated an inequality which seems to generalize the Bell theorem to non-local hidden variable theories. Leggett inequality is violated by quantum mechanics, as was confirmed by experiment. However, a careful analysis reveals that the theory applies to a class of local theory. Contrary to what happens in the derivation of Bell inequality, it is not necessary to make the hypothesis of outcome independence to derive the Leggett inequality.

Abstract:Bell's inequality is established based on local realism. The violation of Bell's inequality by quantum mechanics implies either locality or realism or both are untenable. Leggett's inequality is derived based on nonlocal realism. The violation of Leggett's inequality implies that quantum mechanics is neither local realistic nor nonlocal realistic. The incompatibility of nonlocal realism and quantum mechanics has been urrently confirmed by photon experiments. In our work, we propose to test Leggett's inequality using the Aharonov-Casher effect. In our scheme, four entangled particles emitted from two sources manifest a two-qubit-typed correlation that may result in the violation of the Leggett inequality, while satisfying the no-signaling condition for spacelike separation. Our scheme is tolerant to some local inaccuracies due to the topological nature of the Aharonov-Casher phase. The experimental implementation of our scheme can be possibly realized by a calcium atomic polarization interferometer experiment.

Measurement-induced Nonlocality Based on the Relative Entropy

Abstract:We quantify the measurement-induced nonlocality [Luo and Fu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 120401 (2011)] from the perspective of the relative entropy. This quantification leads to an operational interpretation for the measurement-induced nonlocality, namely, it is the maximal entropy increase after the locally invariant measurements. The relative entropy of nonlocality is upper bounded by the entropy of the measured subsystem. We establish a relationship between the relative entropy of nonlocality and the geometric nonlocality based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm, and show that it is equal to the maximal distillable entanglement. Several trade-off relations are obtained for tripartite pure states. We also give explicit expressions for the relative entropy of nonlocality for Bell-diagonal states.

Abstract:We discuss the use of inequalities of the Leggett-Garg type (LGtI) to witness quantum coherence and present the first experimental violation of this type of inequalities using a light-matter interfaced system. By separately benchmarking the Markovian character of the evolution and the translational invariance of the conditional probabilities, the observed violation of a LGtI is attributed to the quantum coherent character of the process. These results provide a general method to benchmark "quantumness" when the absence of memory effects can be independently certified and confirm the persistence of quantum coherent features within systems of increasing complexity.

Abstract:The Leggett-Garg inequalities probe the classical-quantum boundary by putting limits on the sum of pairwise correlation functions between classical measurement devices that consecutively measured the same quantum system. The apparent violation of these inequalities by standard quantum measurements has cast doubt on quantum mechanics' ability to consistently describe classical objects. Recent work has concluded that these inequalities cannot be violated by either strong or weak projective measurements [1]. Here I consider an entropic version of the Leggett-Garg inequalities that are different from the standard inequalities yet similar in form, and can be defined without reference to any particular observable. I find that the entropic inequalities also cannot be be violated by strong quantum measurements. The entropic inequalities can be extended to describe weak quantum measurements, and I show that these weak entropic Leggett-Garg inequalities cannot be violated either even though the quantum system remains unprojected, because the inequalities describe the classical measurement devices, not the quantum system. I conclude that quantum mechanics adequately describes classical devices, and that we should be careful not to assume that the classical devices accurately describe the quantum system.

Abstract:Investigating the boundary between a quantum mechanical description and a classical realistic view is of fundamental importance. The Leggett-Garg (LG) inequality provides a criterion to distinguish between quantum systems and classical systems, and can be used to prove the macroscopic superposition state. A larger upper bound of the LG function can be obtained in a multilevel system. Here, we present an experimental violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality in a three-level system using a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond by ideal negative result measurements. The experimental maximum value of the Leggett-Garg function is K-3(expt) = 1.625 +/- 0.022, which exceeds the Ltiders bound with a 5 sigma level of confidence.

Abstract:We investigate the maximal violations for both sides of the d-dimensional CGLMP inequality by using the Bell operator method. It turns out that the maximal violations have a decelerating increase as the dimension increases and tend to a finite value at infinity. The numerical values are given out up to d = 10(6) for positively maximal violations and d = 2 x 10(5) for negatively maximal violations. Counterintuitively, the negatively maximal violations tend to be a little stronger than the positively maximal violations. Further we show the states corresponding to these maximal violations and compare them with the maximally entangled states by utilizing entangled degree defined by von Neumann entropy. It shows that their entangled degree tends to some nonmaximal value as the dimension increases.

Abstract:Leggett-Garg inequalities are tests of macroscopic realism that can be violated by quantum mechanics. In this letter, we realise photonic Leggett-Garg tests on a three-level system and implement measurements that admit three distinct measurement outcomes, rather than the usual two. In this way we obtain violations of three- and four-time Leggett-Garg inequalities that are significantly in excess of those obtainable in standard Leggett-Garg tests. We also report violations the quantum-witness equality up to the maximum permitted for a three-outcome measurement. Our results highlight differences between spatial and temporal correlations in quantum mechanics.
Geometric entanglement in the Laughlin wave function

Abstract:We study numerically the geometric entanglement in the Laughlin wave function, which is of great importance in condensed matter physics. The Slater determinant having the largest overlap with the Laughlin wave function is constructed by an iterative algorithm. The logarithm of the overlap, which is a geometric quantity, is then taken as a geometric measure of entanglement. It is found that the geometric entanglement is a linear function of the number of electrons to a good extent. This is especially the case for the lowest Laughlin wave function, namely the one with filling factor of 1/3. Surprisingly, the linear behavior extends well down to the smallest possible value of the electron number, namely, N = 2. The constant term does not agree with the expected topological entropy. In view of previous works, our result indicates that the relation between geometric entanglement and topological entropy is very subtle.

Abstract:Nonlocality, manifested by the violation of Bell inequalities, indicates entanglement within a joint quantum system. A natural question is how much entanglement is required for a given nonlocal behavior. Here, we explore this question by quantifying entanglement using a family of generalized Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-type Bell inequalities. Given a Bell-inequality violation, we derive analytical lower bounds on the entanglement of formation, a measure related to entanglement dilution. The bounds also lead to an analytical estimation of the negativity of entanglement. In addition, we consider one-way distillable entanglement tied to entanglement distillation and derive tight numerical estimates. With the additional assumptions of qubit-qubit systems, we find that the relationship between entanglement and measurement incompatibility is not simply a trade-off under a fixed nonlocal behavior. Furthermore, we apply our results to two realistic scenarios --- non-maximally entangled and Werner states. We show that one can better utilize the nonlocal statistics by optimizing the Bell inequality for better entanglement estimation.

Abstract:Nonlocality and entanglement are not only the fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics but also important resources for quantum information and computation applications. Exploiting the quantitative relationship between the two different resources is of both theoretical and practical significance. The common choice for quantifying the nonlocality of a two-qubit state is the maximal violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. That for entanglement is entanglement of formation, which is a function of the concurrence. In this paper, we systematically investigate the quantitative relationship between the entanglement and nonlocality of a general two-qubit system. We rederive a known upper bound on the nonlocality of a general two-qubit state, which depends on the state's entanglement. We investigate the condition that the nonlocality of two different two-qubit states can be optimally stimulated by the same nonlocality test setting and find the class of two-qubit state pairs that have this property. Finally, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition that the upper bound can be reached.

Abstract:We study the nonlocality of arbitrary dimensional bipartite quantum states. By computing the maximal violation of a set of multi-setting Bell inequalities, an analytical and computable lower bound has been derived for general two-qubit states. This bound gives the necessary condition that a two-qubit state admits no local hidden variable models. The lower bound is shown to be better than that from the CHSH inequality in judging the nonlocality of some quantum states. The results are generalized to the case of high dimensional quantum states, and a sufficient condition for detecting the non-locality has been presented.

Abstract:The Leggett–Garg (LG) test of macroscopic realism involves a series of dichotomic non-invasive measurements that are used to calculate a function which has a fixed upper bound for a macrorealistic system and a larger upper bound for a quantum system. The quantum upper bound depends on both the details of the measurement and the dimension of the system. Here we present an LG experiment on a three-level quantum system, which produces a larger theoretical quantum upper bound than that of a two-level quantum system. The experiment is carried out in nuclear magnetic resonance and consists of the LG test as well as a test of the ideal assumptions associated with the experiment, such as measurement non-invasiveness. The non-invasive measurements are performed via the modified ideal negative result measurement scheme on a three-level system. Once these assumptions are tested, the violation becomes small, despite the fact that the LG value itself is large. Our results showcase the advantages of using the modified measurement scheme that can reach higher LG values, since these leave a larger margin for violating the inequality in the face of experimental imperfections.

Abstract:The Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) places a bound for the distinction between quantum systems and classical systems. Despite that the tests of temporal quantum correlations on LGIs have been studied in Hermitian realm, there are still unknowns for LGIs in non-Hermitian conditions due to the interplay between dissipation and coherence. For example, a theoretical hypothesis to be experimentally validated, suggests that within non-Hermitian systems, the non-unitary evolution of the system dynamics allows the boundaries of the LGIs to surpass the constraints imposed by traditional quantum mechanics. Here, we demonstrate the experimental violation of LGIs in a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric trapped-ion qubit system by measuring the temporal correlation of the evolving states at different times. We find that the upper bounds of the three-time parameter $K_3$ and the four-time parameter $K_4$ show enhanced violations with the increasing dissipation, and can reach the upper limit by infinitely approaching exceptional point. We also observe the distinct behavior of the lower bounds for $K_3$ and $K_4$. While the lower bound for $K_3$ remains constant, the case for $K_4$ shows an upward trend with increasing dissipation. These results reveal a pronounced dependence of the system's temporal quantum correlations on its dissipation to the environment. This opens up a potential pathway for harnessing dissipation to modulate quantum correlations and entanglement.
