Abstract:Root exudates are products the plant generates in responding to CO2 enrichment. They can activate soil nutrient elements and regulate composition of the soil microbiota, thus playing an important role in the rhizospheric microecosystem. Effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and consequent rise in temperature on composition and amounts of root exudates were summarized in this paper. And some issues were discussed based on current status of the research.

Abstract:Root exudate is a general term for a group of organic compounds released from the plant roots to rhizosphere, and plays an important role in formation of soil structure, transformation of soil nutrients, absorption of nutrients by plants, distribution of soil microbe, alleviation the environmental stress, and so on. Furthermore, owing to the degradation by the soil microbe as well as the low concentration and complex composition nature of itself, root exudate and its research methods are always the hot spots and challenges. Recently, several novel experimental techniques and research methods have been developed and applied in the research on root exudates. In this paper, the collection, separation, purification and identification of root exudates are reviewed, which will be helpful to researchers to choose a feasible, suitable and efficient method to their certain object and purpose.

Abstract:This paper summarized the component and role of root exudates,as well as the effects of vegetation types,nutrition stress and rhizosphere microorganisms on the types and quantity of root exudates.In general,under stress condition,the quantity of root exudates increase significantly,it ameliorates plant's growing situation under lacking of nutrition or metal contaminated condition.Some of phenolic acids in root exudates is harmful to plants at high concentration;at the same time it restrains plants'growth.Further research on the generation mechanism of the root exudates and their reflections in physiology and ecology,will help to further understand the physiologic and ecological course on root and soil interface and the mechanism of control and regulation.

Abstract:Soil-beneficial microbes in the rhizosphere play important roles in improving plant growth and health. Root exudates play key roles in plant–microbe interactions and rhizobacterial colonization. This review describes the factors influencing the dynamic interactions between root exudates and the soil microbiome in the rhizosphere, including plant genotype, plant development, and environmental abiotic and biotic factors. We also discuss the roles of specific metabolic mechanisms, regulators, and signals of beneficial soil bacteria in terms of colonization ability. We highlight the latest research progress on the roles of root exudates in regulating beneficial rhizobacterial colonization. Organic acids, amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, volatiles, and other secondary metabolites are discussed in detail. Finally, we propose future research objectives that will help us better understand the role of root exudates in root colonization by rhizobacteria and promote the sustainable development of agriculture and forestry.

Abstract:Root exudates (RE) mainly include mucilage, ecotoenzymes, organic, sugar, phenol and various kinds of amino acids. Plants with different nutritional genotypes differ in RE composition. Plant could adapt itself to the changing rhizosphere environment by increasing exudation of some specific RE when encountered nutrient and environmental stress. RE is an important way used by plant to improve its nutrient status in rhizosphere because RE could improve soil structure, cause weathering of soil minerals, increase soil CEC and affect soil pH, sorption properties of soil surface and soil biological traits. RE also play a key role in activating soil nutrients and enhance ability of plant to take up nutrients. Further studies on plant RE should emphasis on perfecting research methods, enlarging research field and strengthening the combination with other subjects.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Key message</h3><p class="Para">This article describes the composition of root exudates, how these metabolites are released to the rhizosphere and their importance in the recruitment of beneficial microbiota that alleviate plant stress.</p><p class="Para">Metabolites secreted to the rhizosphere by roots are involved in several processes. By modulating the composition of the root exudates, plants can modify soil properties to adapt and ensure their survival under adverse conditions. They use several strategies such as (1) changing soil pH to solubilize nutrients into assimilable forms, (2) chelating toxic compounds, (3) attracting beneficial microbiota, or (4) releasing toxic substances for pathogens, etc. In this work, the composition of root exudates as well as the different mechanisms of root exudation have been reviewed. Existing methodologies to collect root exudates, indicating their advantages and disadvantages, are also described. Factors affecting root exudation have been exposed, including physical, chemical, and biological agents which can produce qualitative and quantitative changes in exudate composition. Finally, since root exudates play an important role in the recruitment of mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), the mechanisms of interaction between plants and the beneficial microbiota have been highlighted.</p>

Abstract:Root exudates are the exchange carriers of substance,energy and information between the plant and soil in rhizosphere.The research on their types and amount is an important part in the fields of plant nutrition,allelopathy and environmental remediation.Currently,the main methods for collecting root exudates are solution culture,soil culture,medium culture and continual collection system;separation and purification methods include resin exchange,derivatization and extraction,column chromatography,molecular membrane and ultracentrifugation;and detection methods are mainly biological activity assay and instrumental analysis.In this paper,these methods were reviewed with examples so as to help researchers to find out efficient methods in their root exudates studies.

Abstract:The rhizosphere encompasses the millimeters of soil surrounding a plant root where complex biological and ecological processes occur. This review describes recent advances in elucidating the role of root exudates in interactions between plant roots and other plants, microbes, and nematodes present in the rhizosphere. Evidence indicating that root exudates may take part in the signaling events that initiate the execution of these interactions is also presented. Various positive and negative plant-plant and plant-microbe interactions are highlighted and described from the molecular to the ecosystem scale. Furthermore, methodologies to address these interactions under laboratory conditions are presented. [ Addendum ]

Abstract:Increasing crop yields and ensuring food security is a major global challenge. In order to increase crop production, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are excessively used. However, the significance of root exudates is understudied. Beneficial interactions between plant and rhizosphere microbiome are critical for plant fitness and health. In this review, we discuss the application and progress of current research methods and technologies in terms of root exudates and rhizosphere microbiome. We summarize how root exudates promote plant access to nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron, and how root exudates strengthen plant immunity to cope with biotic stress by regulating the rhizosphere microbiome, and thereby reducing dependence on fertilizers and pesticides. Optimizing these interactions to increase plant nutrient uptake and resistance to biotic stresses offers one of the few untapped opportunities to confront sustainability issues in food security. To overcome the limitations of current research, combination of multi-omics, imaging technology together with synthetic communities has the potential to uncover the interaction mechanisms and to fill the knowledge gap for their applications in agriculture to achieve sustainable development.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Root exudates are an essential carrier for material cycling, energy exchange, and information transfer between the belowground parts of plants and the soil. We synthesize current properties and regulators of root exudates and their role in the belowground ecosystem as substances cycle and signal regulation. We discussed the composition and amount of root exudates and their production mechanism, indicating that plant species, growth stage, environmental factors, and microorganisms are primary influence factors. The specific mechanisms by which root secretions mobilize the soil nutrients were summarized. First, plants improve the nutrient status of the soil by releasing organic acids for acidification and chelation. Then, root exudates accelerated the SOC turnover due to their dual impacts, forming and destabilizing aggregates and MASOC. Eventually, root exudates mediate the plant–plant interaction and plant–microbe interaction. Additionally, a summary of the current collection methods of root exudates is presented.

Abstract:The breaking silence between the plant roots and microorganisms in the rhizosphere affects plant growth and physiology by impacting biochemical, molecular, nutritional, and edaphic factors. The components of the root exudates are associated with the microbial population, notably, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The information accessible to date demonstrates that PGPR is specific to the plant's roots. However, inadequate information is accessible for developing bio-inoculation/bio-fertilizers for the crop in concern, with satisfactory results at the field level. There is a need to explore the perfect candidate PGPR to meet the need for plant growth and yield. The functions of PGPR and their chemotaxis mobility toward the plant root are triggered by the cluster of genes induced by the components of root exudates. Some reports have indicated the benefit of root exudates in plant growth and productivity, yet a methodical examination of rhizosecretion and its consequences in phytoremediation have not been made. In the light of the afore-mentioned facts, in the present review, the mechanistic insight and recent updates on the specific PGPR recruitment to improve crop production at the field level are methodically addressed.

Abstract:Plants exude a wide variety of compounds into the rhizosphere, modulating soil functioning and diversity. The number of studies investigating exudation has exponentially increased over the past decades. Yet, the high inter‐study variability of the results is slowing down our understanding of root–soil interactions. This variability is partly due to the absence of harmonized methodologies to collect and characterize exudation. Here, we discuss how various experimental aspects influence exudation profiles by performing a literature review, and we suggest best practices for different experimental setups. We discuss state‐of‐the‐art of spatially resolved exudate collection, collection in controlled versus field conditions and plant growth setups ranging from hydroponics to soil. We highlight the importance of preparing experimental blanks, in situ versus ex situ exudate collection, various collection media and timing of collection, exudate storage and processing and analytical considerations. We summarize best practices for experimental setup and reporting of parameters in an easily accessible table format to facilitate discussion of best practices in the field. An increased standardization in the field together with the systematic studies suggested will improve our knowledge of how plant exudation shapes interactions with organisms in soil.
