Abstract:Abiotic stresses such as salinity, drought, extreme temperature, radiation, nutrient deficiency, and heavy metals can significantly impact plant growth and yield, posing a challenge to agriculture. Various strategies have been employed to enhance plant resistance to these stresses through conventional and genetic manipulations. However, these often require extensive breeding programmes and substantial financial investments. In this regard, plant root exudates have emerged as a promising tool for improving plant performance under adverse conditions. They play a crucial role in the rhizosphere, influencing and guiding the microbial community to support plant growth. Published literature suggests that plants can adapt to abiotic stress by modifying the chemistry of their root exudates. These modified exudates can recruit beneficial microorganisms that aid in protecting plants from stress. Despite the progress made in identifying, characterizing, and detecting root exudates, there is still a substantial gap in our understanding of their significance and potential applications, particularly in addressing abiotic stress in plants. Therefore, the present review provides valuable insights into recent research progress in the field of root exudates. It covers fundamental information about root exudates, mechanisms of exudation, the impact of abiotic factors, and the interactions between roots and microbes in exudation. The review also explores how root exudates contribute to enhancing abiotic stress tolerance in plants, shedding light on the potential benefits of these compounds. The review also discusses existing challenges in the field of root exudates, particularly in their application for sustainable agriculture. It also addresses potential research gaps and outlines future directions for further investigation and practical application in agriculture for abiotic stress amelioration.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Key message</h3>This article describes the composition of root exudates, how these metabolites are released to the rhizosphere and their importance in the recruitment of beneficial microbiota that alleviate plant stress.Metabolites secreted to the rhizosphere by roots are involved in several processes. By modulating the composition of the root exudates, plants can modify soil properties to adapt and ensure their survival under adverse conditions. They use several strategies such as (1) changing soil pH to solubilize nutrients into assimilable forms, (2) chelating toxic compounds, (3) attracting beneficial microbiota, or (4) releasing toxic substances for pathogens, etc. In this work, the composition of root exudates as well as the different mechanisms of root exudation have been reviewed. Existing methodologies to collect root exudates, indicating their advantages and disadvantages, are also described. Factors affecting root exudation have been exposed, including physical, chemical, and biological agents which can produce qualitative and quantitative changes in exudate composition. Finally, since root exudates play an important role in the recruitment of mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), the mechanisms of interaction between plants and the beneficial microbiota have been highlighted.

Abstract:: Plants evolved alongside microbes, enabling plants to better cope with abiotic and biotic stresses. The interactions between plant roots and local soil microbes are critical for environmental adaptation and plant health. Plants actively regulate the microbial community composition in their rhizospheres to recruit specific microorganisms that enhance their fitness in the ecosystem they inhabit. This study builds on prior research suggesting that plants have a in recruiting microbes unique in their home environment, reflecting mutual recognition and the targeted recruitment of microbes. : Using gene- and genome-centric approaches, we assessed the functional potential of root-associated microbes and profiled the host metabolites to uncover the metabolic outputs potentially regulating host-microbe interactions. Our results showed that plants adapted to drier environments experience less stress, producing fewer stress-related metabolites and impacting the recruitment of microbes with genes linked to stress relief pathways. In particular, plant-derived trimethyllysine was highly associated with microbial populations capable of improving nutrient uptake, producing plant growth-promoting compounds, and modulating stress responses. : This study highlights the critical interplay between host exudates and microbial substrate uptake as the primary mechanism of rhizosphere assembly. We demonstrate that plants actively produce metabolites to recruit microbial populations with the functional potential to enhance hosts' ability to thrive in a stressful environment. This research provides insights into the mechanisms of plant-microbe communication, rhizosphere recruitment, and the complex interplay of plant-microbe interactions. Furthermore, it highlights promising avenues for manipulating rhizosphere microbiomes to support conservation agriculture in the face of climate change.

Abstract:Increasing crop yields and ensuring food security is a major global challenge. In order to increase crop production, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are excessively used. However, the significance of root exudates is understudied. Beneficial interactions between plant and rhizosphere microbiome are critical for plant fitness and health. In this review, we discuss the application and progress of current research methods and technologies in terms of root exudates and rhizosphere microbiome. We summarize how root exudates promote plant access to nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron, and how root exudates strengthen plant immunity to cope with biotic stress by regulating the rhizosphere microbiome, and thereby reducing dependence on fertilizers and pesticides. Optimizing these interactions to increase plant nutrient uptake and resistance to biotic stresses offers one of the few untapped opportunities to confront sustainability issues in food security. To overcome the limitations of current research, combination of multi-omics, imaging technology together with synthetic communities has the potential to uncover the interaction mechanisms and to fill the knowledge gap for their applications in agriculture to achieve sustainable development.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Plants live in association with microorganisms that positively influence plant development, vigor, and fitness in response to pathogens and abiotic stressors. The bulk of the plant microbiome is concentrated belowground at the plant root-soil interface. Plant roots secrete carbon-rich rhizodeposits containing primary and secondary low molecular weight metabolites, lysates, and mucilages. These exudates provide nutrients for soil microorganisms and modulate their affinity to host plants, but molecular details of this process are largely unresolved. We addressed this gap by focusing on the molecular dialog between eight well-characterized beneficial strains of the Pseudomonas fluorescens group and Brachypodium distachyon , a model for economically important food, feed, forage, and biomass crops of the grass family. We collected and analyzed root exudates of B. distachyon and demonstrated the presence of multiple carbohydrates, amino acids, organic acids, and phenolic compounds. The subsequent screening of bacteria by Biolog Phenotype MicroArrays revealed that many of these metabolites provide carbon and energy for the Pseudomonas strains. RNA-seq profiling of bacterial cultures amended with root exudates revealed changes in the expression of genes encoding numerous catabolic and anabolic enzymes, transporters, transcriptional regulators, stress response, and conserved hypothetical proteins. Almost half of the differentially expressed genes mapped to the variable part of the strains’ pangenome, reflecting the importance of the variable gene content in the adaptation of P. fluorescens to the rhizosphere lifestyle. Our results collectively reveal the diversity of cellular pathways and physiological responses underlying the establishment of mutualistic interactions between these beneficial rhizobacteria and their plant hosts.

Abstract:The breaking silence between the plant roots and microorganisms in the rhizosphere affects plant growth and physiology by impacting biochemical, molecular, nutritional, and edaphic factors. The components of the root exudates are associated with the microbial population, notably, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The information accessible to date demonstrates that PGPR is specific to the plant's roots. However, inadequate information is accessible for developing bio-inoculation/bio-fertilizers for the crop in concern, with satisfactory results at the field level. There is a need to explore the perfect candidate PGPR to meet the need for plant growth and yield. The functions of PGPR and their chemotaxis mobility toward the plant root are triggered by the cluster of genes induced by the components of root exudates. Some reports have indicated the benefit of root exudates in plant growth and productivity, yet a methodical examination of rhizosecretion and its consequences in phytoremediation have not been made. In the light of the afore-mentioned facts, in the present review, the mechanistic insight and recent updates on the specific PGPR recruitment to improve crop production at the field level are methodically addressed.

Abstract:Microbes hold immense potential, based on the fact that they are widely acknowledged for their role in mitigating the detrimental impacts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which were extensively employed during the Green Revolution era. The consequence of this extensive use has been the degradation of agricultural land, soil health and fertility deterioration, and a decline in crop quality. Despite the existence of environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives, microbial bioinoculants encounter numerous challenges in real-world agricultural settings. These challenges include harsh environmental conditions like unfavorable soil pH, temperature extremes, and nutrient imbalances, as well as stiff competition with native microbial species and host plant specificity. Moreover, obstacles spanning from large-scale production to commercialization persist. Therefore, substantial efforts are underway to identify superior solutions that can foster a sustainable and eco-conscious agricultural system. In this context, attention has shifted towards the utilization of cell-free microbial exudates as opposed to traditional microbial inoculants. Microbial exudates refer to the diverse array of cellular metabolites secreted by microbial cells. These metabolites enclose a wide range of chemical compounds, including sugars, organic acids, amino acids, peptides, siderophores, volatiles, and more. The composition and function of these compounds in exudates can vary considerably, depending on the specific microbial strains and prevailing environmental conditions. Remarkably, they possess the capability to modulate and influence various plant physiological processes, thereby inducing tolerance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. Furthermore, these exudates facilitate plant growth and aid in the remediation of environmental pollutants such as chemicals and heavy metals in agroecosystems. Much like live microbes, when applied, these exudates actively participate in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere, engaging in continuous interactions with plants and plant-associated microbes. Consequently, they play a pivotal role in reshaping the microbiome. The biostimulant properties exhibited by these exudates position them as promising biological components for fostering cleaner and more sustainable agricultural systems.

Abstract:The well-being of the microbial community that densely populates the rhizosphere is aided by a plant’s root exudates. Maintaining a plant’s health is a key factor in its continued existence. As minute as rhizospheric microbes are, their importance in plant growth cannot be overemphasized. They depend on plants for nutrients and other necessary requirements. The relationship between the rhizosphere-microbiome (rhizobiome) and plant hosts can be beneficial, non-effectual, or pathogenic depending on the microbes and the plant involved. This relationship, to a large extent, determines the fate of the host plant’s survival. Modern molecular techniques have been used to unravel rhizobiome species’ composition, but the interplay between the rhizobiome root exudates and other factors in the maintenance of a healthy plant have not as yet been thoroughly investigated. Many functional proteins are activated in plants upon contact with external factors. These proteins may elicit growth promoting or growth suppressing responses from the plants. To optimize the growth and productivity of host plants, rhizobiome microbial diversity and modulatory techniques need to be clearly understood for improved plant health.

Abstract:Rhizospheric plant–microbe interactions have dynamic importance in sustainable agriculture systems that have a reduced reliance on agrochemicals. Rhizosphere signaling focuses on the interactions between plants and the surrounding symbiotic microorganisms that facilitate the development of rhizobiome diversity, which is beneficial for plant productivity. Plant–microbe communication comprises intricate systems that modulate local and systemic defense mechanisms to mitigate environmental stresses. This review deciphers insights into how the exudation of plant secondary metabolites can shape the functions and diversity of the root microbiome. It also elaborates on how rhizosphere interactions influence plant growth, regulate plant immunity against phytopathogens, and prime the plant for protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, along with some recent well-reported examples. A holistic understanding of these interactions can help in the development of tailored microbial inoculants for enhanced plant growth and targeted disease suppression.

Abstract:The rhizosphere, a microecosystem, harbours numerous organisms such as bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, and nematodes. The definite and diverse community that can grow or survive in the rhizosphere is called rhizomicrobiome. The community and activity of microorganisms could be enhanced and decided by the respective plants by the special molecules called root exudates. The plant root exudates facilitate molecular communication in and from root to root and root to microorganisms. The exudates not only attract the microorganisms, but also suppress the growth of unfavorable microbes. The plant exudates have been facilitated to establish the relationship with the plant’s root system as mutualism or antagonism or neutralism. These roots release molecules that play a vital role in communication and maintain the microbial community in the rhizosphere. For example, some molecules are also involved in bioremediation process by absorption of heavy metals. Overall, this chapter concentrates on transport and release of plant root exudates into rhizosphere and how the exudates influence the specific and diversified microbial growth and their adaptation in microecosystem of rhizosphere.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses are the most significant factors reducing agricultural productivity. Plants face extreme environmental conditions that may affect their biological mechanisms, thereby influencing their growth and development. Microorganisms possess substantial metabolites that aid in helping plants mitigate abiotic stresses. Plants’ interaction with microbes constitutes a diversified ecosystem, as sometimes both the partners share a mutualistic relationship. Endophytes, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) are examples of microorganisms that play an essential role in alleviating abiotic stresses and, hence, improving plant growth. The plant–microbe interaction leads to the modulation of complex mechanisms in the plant cellular system. Moreover, the residing microbial flora also inhibits the phytopathogens, therefore, it becomes part of plants’ innate defense system. Keeping in view the growing environmental concerns, it is important to identify the role of the plant microbiome in the transportation of nutrients to maintain sustainable production. Furthermore, it is important to identify the factors enabling plants to recruit beneficial microbial species and how to deal with the potential pathogens. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the impacts of various abiotic stressors on agricultural productivity and the role of beneficial microorganisms in mitigating the negative effects of abiotic stresses. The literature review also shows that the beneficial microbes, including PGPRs, AMFs, and endophytes, adopt various mechanisms for ameliorating the negative effects of various stresses. It has been observed that biochar and microbes, either individually or in combination, can play a significant role in maintaining plant growth under stress conditions. Although conventional inoculation of beneficial microbes mitigates abiotic stresses and enhances productivity, the advancement in genetic engineering would help transfer specific genes from the microbes to plants to aid in abiotic stress mitigation.

Abstract:The soil provides anchorage to the land plants and acts as host for numerous microorganisms that modulate growth and metabolism of plants. Hence, soil ecology has formed an integral part of plant ecology in recent years. Plant roots are the most sophisticated and pivotal interface between the host and soil. They produce and transmit appropriate signals both locally or systemically from the belowground microbial community by attraction, attachment, absorption, imbibition, interaction, and assimilation. Among several biotic components of soil, the belowground microbiome exhibit natural variation across several strata of soil. Alteration in soil abiotic parameters specifically water profiles steer the rhizosphere microorganisms. Hence, understanding of the 'plant–pathogen–rhizosphere tripartite interrelation' with respect to shift in water profiles still warrants steady knowledge up-gradation in ecological perspective. Besides, how these triple-partner signal exchanges within soil are regulated during water-limiting conditions is also largely undefined. The present study shall briefly revisit the already established facts of soil–root–rhizosphere interaction, under optimum as well as water-limiting conditions. Additionally, it shall elaborate the role of belowground microbiome in regulating the tripartite signal exchanges necessary to uphold plant performance during normal to water-starved conditions. The promising role of microbiome engineering in alleviating water stress shall also be discussed. The analysis taken together is expected to provide an additional explanation that could help in designing appropriate and sustainable soil supplements with agricultural importance during water-depleted conditions.

Abstract:Rhizosphere microbiomes and plant-microbiome interactions govern many key biogeochemical processes important for plant nutrition and their ability to tolerate biotic and abiotic stresses. Several studies suggest interactions of microbes with crop plants play a prominent role in adaptation, maintenance, and survival of both the partners as well as for soil health in a number of abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heavy metal contamination, etc., by regulating changes in terms of biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes of plants. The strain specificity plays crucial role in exploiting characteristic potential of candidate microbe to provide tolerance and alleviate negative impact of abiotic stresses in plants. During stress management, plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been shown to activate plant antioxidant defense machinery by regulating the activity of scavenging key enzymes to level over produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and by regulating the amounts of proteins, polysaccharides, and important phytohormones. Many Rhizobacteria have also been shown to produce ACC deaminase enzyme initiating a cascade of physiological and biochemical changes in the plant thereby helping them withstand effects of abiotic stresses. Some of the examples for such PGPB include Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Methylobacterium, and Variovorax. In view of the projections from climate-smart agriculture research, predictions for reduced rainfall and increased effects of other abiotic stresses such as salinity across many agricultural regions worldwide are being calculated, exploitation of the beneficial plant–microbe interactions to alleviate abiotic stress effects in crops should be one of the key approaches to improving global food production.

Abstract:Due to frequently changing global climatic conditions, the frequency of abiotic stresses such as unexpected flooding, drought, different temperature regimes leading high or low temperature, soil salinization, and nutrient deficiency or toxicity has been dramatically increased. These stresses are important threats to sustainable agriculture causing numerous direct and indirect effects on plants ultimately influence the quantity and quality of food crops. However, plants are equipped with array of internal methods for coping with devastating impacts of stress including production of antioxidants, osmoprotectants, proteins, phytohormones, relocation of nitrogen, phosphorus etc. Phytohormones in general play crucial role in the regulation of various physiological and biochemical processes in terms of plant growth, development, and productivity under normal as well as stressful conditions. Adaptation and resistance towards these stresses need sophisticated perception, signalling, and responsive mechanisms. In this review, we go through recent developments in comprehension how jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) control abiotic stress responses in plants. Interaction of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) with the roots of higher plants alters the concentration of endogenous phytohormones and exemplifies a novel pattern of hormonal interaction. PGPR help plants withstand abiotic stressors by altering the sensitivity to response and controlling the production of phytohormones. Since they activate signalling pathways, the interaction of phytohormones is essential for the survival of plants under adverse conditions and emphasis is given on the crosstalk of JA, SA, and PGPRs.

Abstract:Root-associated microbial communities have strong influences on the health and development of plants. Through the secretion of root exudates, the soil microbiome is impacted by plants, thereby steering plant-soil reactions. Considering the importance of root exudates in the establishment of symbiotic associations in the rhizosphere, it is quite clear that understanding the interaction between plant roots and the soil microbiome may prove beneficial. Here, we review the interaction between plant root exudates and microbial communities in the soil. The influence of these bioactive molecules on the structure and function of soil microbes is also considered. We additionally, deliberate on how plants determine the soil microbiome and how they extract nutrients from endophytes for the augmentation of their growth and development. A good perspective of the communication between plant roots and the soil microbiome could lead to increased crop production, thereby limiting the need for synthetic fertilizers.

Abstract:Root architecture has a key role in influencing plant growth and yield. In recent years, the agriculture sector has gained interest in harnessing the potential of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that possess the competence to produce phytohormones, with the aim of enhancing these desirable traits. Phytohormone-producing PGPR exert their influence on root development through the modulation of phytohormone production and distribution, encompassing auxins, cytokinins, and gibberellins. These beneficial bacteria stimulate lateral root proliferation, elongate root hairs, and promote the accumulation of root biomass, ultimately leading to heightened nutrient uptake and enhanced water absorption. Moreover, the phytohormones synthesized by PGPR serve to activate stress signalling pathways, thereby strengthening plant resilience against an abiotic stressor, viz ., drought, heavy metal, salinity, and toxicity. This comprehensive review article highlights the role of these PGPR and their significant impact on augmenting root architecture in plants. The development of roots is often vulnerable to several abiotic factors, which in turn adversely affects the initial growth and overall health of the plants. This review thoroughly explores the complex interaction of phytohormones in mitigating abiotic stresses through their modulation of root development. Additionally, the interaction between phytohormone-producing PGPR and nanoparticles (NPs) has emerged as a significantly promising approach to reinforce plant growth and an ability to improve the colonization and activity of PGPR in the rhizosphere, further expanding their beneficial effects on root architecture and stress tolerance. Within this context, we have discussed the stimulating dynamics of PGPR interaction with NPs in sustaining root architecture to optimize plant health and effectively mitigate abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Soil-beneficial microbes in the rhizosphere play important roles in improving plant growth and health. Root exudates play key roles in plant–microbe interactions and rhizobacterial colonization. This review describes the factors influencing the dynamic interactions between root exudates and the soil microbiome in the rhizosphere, including plant genotype, plant development, and environmental abiotic and biotic factors. We also discuss the roles of specific metabolic mechanisms, regulators, and signals of beneficial soil bacteria in terms of colonization ability. We highlight the latest research progress on the roles of root exudates in regulating beneficial rhizobacterial colonization. Organic acids, amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, volatiles, and other secondary metabolites are discussed in detail. Finally, we propose future research objectives that will help us better understand the role of root exudates in root colonization by rhizobacteria and promote the sustainable development of agriculture and forestry.
