Abstract:Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology is a feasible method for manufacturing steel bars to achieve the digital and automatic construction of reinforced concrete structures. However, the bond behavior between the WAAM steel bar and concrete does not meet the requirements of engineering applications. To enhance the bond behavior of the WAAM steel bar, the profiled corrugated steel bar is proposed. In this paper, one group of the natural roughness steel bar and three groups of the profiled corrugated steel bar with varying rib depths were fabricated using WAAM. A comprehensive description of the manufacturing principle and macro-structure of the WAAM steel bar was provided. Additionally, the mechanical properties and bond behavior of the WAAM steel bar were systematically investigated. The results show that the manufacturing precision of the WAAM steel bar can be improved by dynamically controlling the molten pool. The structure of the corrugated rib significantly enhances the bond strength and initial stiffness, with a slight reduction in the equivalent tensile strength and elongation compared to the WAAM natural roughness steel bar. Moreover, the normalized bond strength and initial stiffness of the WAAM profiled corrugated steel bar increase with the increase in rib depth. The experimental curve shows that the five-branch bond stress-slip model developed in this study can evaluate the bond behavior between the WAAM steel bar and concrete satisfactorily.

Abstract:Experimental research on debonding failure of concert structure with high strength steel wire mesh was conducted to investigate the failure characteristics of interface debonding between concrete and reinforcing layer.The effects of different polymer mortar reinforcing methods were discussed on Shear bearing capacity and shear strength of reinforcing layer, such as single side strengthening、plant bar strengthening and U-shaped strengthening.The results show that shear-bearing capacity can be effectively improved by means of increasing bonding area of reinforcing layer, such as U-shaped strengthening or extension length of reinforcement layer.Shear strength of reinforcing layer would be weaken at the same time.Shear strength and shear-bearing capacity of polymer mortar reinforcing layer would be substantially improved by means of planting shear reinforcement.According to the test results, the suggestion value of minimum ratio of planting bar was prevised for the reference of the application in actual application.

Abstract:A polyethylene pipe reinforced by winding steel wires (PSP) has been widely used in petroleum, chemical engineering, and water supply, etc. The PSP has outstanding mechanical properties due to its unique composite structure. However, according to earlier research, interfacial de-bonding between steel wire and adhesive is the cause for bulging failure of PSP joint, which is more likely to occur when the temperature and inner pressure increases to some extent in the application. In this study, the interfacial behavior between steel wire and adhesive was investigated and the interfacial failure process was analyzed. The pull-out test was conducted using specimens that were manufactured following PSP process parameters. Finite element models were established to represent the mechanical behavior and the de-bonding failure process of the steel-polymer interface. Contact surface with cohesive behavior based cohesive zone model was utilized to characterize the interfacial properties. The interfacial de-bonding failure process included stick-slip interaction and frictional sliding interaction. Both the stick-slip interaction and the adhesive-friction transition were modeled in the simulation. Results were presented in terms of pull-out load-displacement relationships, maximum pull-out force, and nonlinear stress distributions. The simulation result agreed well with the experimental result.

Abstract:The effectiveness of concrete structures reinforced by the high strength steel wire mesh-polymer mortar depends on the bond-slip behavior of the interface between the polymer modified cement mortar layer (referred as mortar layer) and the concrete. The areas of the mortar layer tested in the previous studies are generally very small and the obtained conclusions are with limited applications. In this study, the experimental approach was used to analyze the slip behavior of the interface between the concrete block and a larger scale mortar layer. 30 concrete blocks retrofitted with mortar layers were fabricated and the single shear tests on these specimens were conducted. The applied shear loads, slip displacement between the concrete block and the mortar, as well as the strain of the mortar were monitored during tests. The experimental results exhibit the specimens have two representative failure types: debond with and without cracks. Then the bonding performance of the interface was systematically explored by analyzing the failure modes of the specimens and the mechanical property of the mortar. Meanwhile, the slip behavior of the interface influenced by the bond area, the thickness of the mortar layer, the mortar strength and the roughness of the interface were discussed. It was presented that the interface roughness treatment and increasing the mortar strength could significantly improve the behavior of the interface.

Abstract:This paper studied the relationships of uniaxial tensile and compressive stress with strain and bending properties of polymer-mortar. Test results show that, with the addition of polyvinyl acetate (PVAC), the compressive strength and compressive modulus of mortar decrease distinctly, but the ultimate strain increases significantly. The uniaxial tensile strength and bending strength increase a little, but the tensile peak-strain and the ratio of tensile-compressive and bending-compressive increase remarkably.Therefore, the mechanical properties of mortar can be improved efficiently by adding polyvinyl acetate.From the bending strength for 12 years, it can be found that the polymer-mortar possessed excellent binding and durability. Hence, the polymer-mortar can be widely used as agglutinating of old-fresh concrete, stick ing steep plate and surface whitewashing at structure reinforced.

Abstract:The reliable bond of steel fibers to concrete matrix is fundamental to ensure they work together under internal and external actions throughout their service life. Due to the lack of research on the long-term bond property, this paper conducted an experimental study on the bond of hook-end steel fiber in the manufactured sand mortars with different water to binder ratios cured for different ages from 7 days to 360 days. The characteristic pull-out load-slip curves are measured, and bond performance indexes at different curing ages are analyzed by using the multi-index synthetical evaluation method. The results show that the bond strengths, the fiber strength use efficiency, the debonding work and the pull-out work increased with the increase in curing age up to to 90 days, which became stable with little variation with the follow-up curing age. The variations are closely associated with the development of mortar strength. Steel fibers embedded in high-strength mortar presented a higher debonding ductility and a lower slipping ductility. In addition, the prediction formulas of long-term debonding strength, bond strength and residual bond strength are proposed.

Abstract:In order to investigate the bond strength between deformed steel fiber and concrete, various deformed steel fibers, like arch type fiber, spiral type fiber, bundle fiber, end-hooked fiber and so on, are produced. Straight type fiber and deformed fiber were embedded in mortar to do the bond strength experiment. A comparison with each other was carried out. It has been found that the change of the fiber cross section increases the bond strength between steel fiber and concrete matrix, growth range outweighs 100%. When modified both ends of anchorages, the bond strength raises 400% in contrast with straight type steel fiber. Besides, the deformed fiber, which went through two modified methods, enhances the bond strength over 700% in comparison with straight type fiber.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of a large number of corrosion and fatigue damage of the current prestressed steel strands, this paper adopts carbon fiber-reinforced composite (CFRP) strand with better corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance and uses it in concrete structures. The bond anchorage is usually used to anchor CFRP tension members, which bonds the CFRP through the binding medium. Through experimental research on the CFRP strand bond anchorage, the inner taper of the CFRP prestressed strand cone was anchored and the influence of different anchor lengths and bonding media on the anchorage performance was determined. The test results demonstrate that the taper of the conical anchorage described in this paper is a key factor affecting its anchorage performance and increasing the inner taper within a certain range is beneficial to improving the anchorage performance of the conical anchorage. The bonded anchorage of the CFRP prestressed strand with a 200 mm anchor is the most reliable and efficient, as the taper of the 200 mm anchor is the largest. The average anchoring efficiency coefficient of the 200 mm anchor was 96.4%, which is 3.7% and 2.6% higher than the average anchoring efficiency coefficient of 220 mm and 250 mm anchors, respectively. The anchoring efficiency of the anchor is also high (94.1%) when the epoxy resin mortar is used as the bonding medium. Moreover, after an appropriate amount of quartz sand is added to the epoxy resin, the overall comprehensive performance of the anchor can be improved to a certain extent and the stress of the CFRP strand can be improved. The coupling between ultra-high-performance concrete dry mix (UHPC-GJL) and CFRP strand materials is not suitable for UHPC-GJL being used, as its binding medium as the average anchoring efficiency coefficient is only 44.5% when UHPC-GJL is used as the anchor bonding medium.
Experiments and mechanical behaviour of anchorage joints for steel cables

Abstract:Traditional anchorage joints for steel cables are complicated and expensive. A new type of anchorage joint formed by cold pressing is developed in this paper.Experiments were conducted on 10 groups of joints. The test results show that the new joint has a clear load-transferring path and good load-bearing behaviour.Based on the test results, a finite elcment model was established and numerical analyses were conducted.Finally, the bond-friction coefficient, the critical anchorage length and the maximum anchorage length for the new type joint are obtained.

Abstract:The pre-stressed stainless steel wire mesh (SSWM) –mortar (M) is a pre-stressed laminate structure for structural strengthening and rehabilitation. Pre-stressing the stainless steel wire mesh is the key technology for engineering practice. A jogged anchor is proposed for anchoring large diameter SSWM conveniently. The flexural performances of 5 damaged RC beams strengthened by pre-stressed SSWM-M and one referential RC beam were tested. The experimental results indicates that the large diameter pre-stressed SSWM-M has a better performance in controlling the crack growth, restoring the flexural capacity and stiffness than the small diameter pre-stressed SSWM-M.
Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bonding Behavior of Corroded Mortar Anchor under Dynamic Load

Abstract:The connection between reinforcement and mortar was established through the surface-to-surface contact method. The transient dynamic Full method was adopted for dynamic loading solution. The numerical analysis model for the bonding performance of corroded mortar bolts under dynamic load was established. The numerical analysis results were compared with the test results for verification. The bond properties of the anchorage interface under the conditions of different mortar protection thickness, anchorage length and corrosion rate were analyzed. The results show that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the test results. The numerical model can analyze the bonding performance of the corroded mortar bolts. Within a certain limit, the bond stress is positively correlated with the thickness of the mortar protective layer.The larger the anchorage length is, the greater the bonding stress at the loading end will be, and the more uneven the distribution of bonding stress in the anchorage segment will be. However, when the anchorage length reaches a certain value, the continuous increase of anchorage length will have no obvious effect on the improvement of its bonding performance, so there is an optimal anchorage length. With the increase of the corrosion ratio, the bonding stress peck decreased gradually.

Abstract:The combination of large-diameter steel strands and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) presents a promising opportunity to improve the performance of prestressed concrete structures. However, investigations on the bond between them, which determines important design parameters such as the anchorage length of the strand, are insufficient. This study performs pull-out tests of 18-mm-diameter steel strands embedded in UHPC to investigate the bond property. The test data is analyzed to determine the effects of embedment length, concrete cover depth, and stirrup ratio on the bond property. Based on the analysis, a bilinear bond-slip model is calibrated following the principle of energy equivalence. Moreover, an empirical formula for the maximum bond stress is proposed. According to the obtained bond properties, the anchorage length of the strand is evaluated using the approximate probability method, and the results are comparable with the values given in several design codes.

Abstract:The fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) has begun to show great application prospects in structural strengthening, especially for seismic strengthening. However, a poor monolithic response of fabric and mortar limits the utility ratio of the fabric and the mechanical properties of FRCM. A simple, fast, and efficient method for improving the bonding properties of the fabric-mortar interface to enhance the performance of the FRCM plate remains to be investigated. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests on 42 carbon fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (C-FRCM) plates with anchored carbon fiber bundles were performed to analyze the influence of anchorages on their mechanical properties, and to compare them to the prior results of pull-out tests of anchored carbon fiber bundles. The results show that the ultimate tensile stress, the energy dissipation, and the fiber utility ratio can be increased significantly after anchoring, but the anchorage cannot fully restrict the slippage of fiber fabrics. The effect of other variables, such as the bond length of steel plates, the number of fabric layers, and mortar strength, were also tested and discussed.

Abstract:In order to investigate the interfacial bonding properties of high-strength steel stainless wire mesh-reinforced ECC (HSSWM-ECC) and concrete, a finite element model was established for two types of interfaces based on experimental research. The results show that the failure modes observed in the 21 groups of simulations can be classified into three categories: debonding failure, ECC extrusion failure and concrete splitting failure. The failure mode was mainly affected by the type of interface. The effective anchorage length is inversely proportional to the strength of the concrete and proportional to the stiffness and thickness of the HSSWM-ECC. The capacity of the roughening interface is positively correlated with the concrete strength and bonding length, but negatively correlated with the interfacial width ratio. Increasing both the number and width of grooves within the effective range enhances the interfacial capacity, whereas higher concrete strengths tend to reduce it. Based on the above results, calculation models for the effective anchorage length and bearing capacity were established separately for the two types of interfaces. The theoretical model for the interfacial bonding property between HSSWM-ECC and concrete has been refined. These advancements establish a theoretical groundwork for the design of concrete structures strengthened with HSSWM-ECC.

Abstract:Polymer-modified fiber cement mortar ( PFCM) is generally used in the crack repair of concrete structure and interfacial reinforcement. The influence of different environment on consolidating concrete beam via PFCM is dependent on the durability of PFCM, the durability of reinforcement materials, the bonding durability of the interface of PFCM concrete and so on. Based on four-point bending tests, this paper studies the ultimate bearing capacities, load-deflection curves and failure modes of the beams strengthened by PFCM under high humidity and different temperature conditions. Our main conclusions include:( a) The bearing capacity of beams have been significantly improved by the strengthened layer. ( b) The decrease in interfacial bond strength, the plasticity of strengthened beams and the bond between rebar and PFCM have been observed at elevated temperature.

Abstract:A new kind of specimen was designed and produced to research the dynamic bond-strength of the interface between steel and cement mortar experimentally and numerically. The relationship of the loading speed rate and the bond-strength of the interface between steel and cement mortar was investigated through quasi-static and impact experiments. Numerical calculation was carried out by using LS-DYNA software and Johnson-Holmquist-Cook model as the constitutive relationship of cement mortar material. By calculation the process and mechanism of the fracture of the interface under impact loading was studied and the credibility and reliability of the impact experiment method based on the SHPB experiment technique are verified. It can be concluded that the bond-strength is roughly linear with the logarithm of the loading speed rates.

Abstract:As a common anchoring method of prestressed cable, hot cast anchor is lack of relevant research and complete design method. In engineering, safety is usually ensured by safety factor, resulting in material waste. In this paper, the bonding properties and failure mechanism between Galfan-coated steel wire and hot casting material at room temperature and high temperature were deeply studied. The following conclusions are obtained: 1) Based on the elastic shear lag model and the debonding theory, the stress transfer of the Galfan-coated steel wire–hot-cast material interface during the steel wire-drawing process was investigated, and a partial-debonding model and the calculation method of critical embedded length Lc were proposed; 2) The failure load and mechanism of steel wire with different anchorage length and insertion angle are obtained by pull-out test at room temperature. It is found that the bond strength of steel wire with Galfan-coated inserted vertically is 16 MPa, which is less than that of ordinary galvanized steel wire. 3) Carry out the pull-out test of steel wire at high temperature to obtain the failure mechanism of steel wire hot cast anchor under fire, and put forward the prediction formula of bond strength of hot cast anchor under fire, which provides theoretical basis for the design of hot cast anchor.
