Abstract:The method of reduction of 2,2',4'-trichloroacetophenone with sodium borohydride to prepare 1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-chloroethanol was studied. Temperature effect on the reaction was investigated and the mechanism to form objective product and byproducts was discussed. Calcium chloride and lanthainium chloride etc. efficiently improved the reaction specificity. In the presence of amberlyst-732(H+) the reaction was smoothly carried out in aprotic solvent such as THF with high yield and specificity. The structure of the objective product was characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra.

Abstract:The selectivity of a facile reductive and extractive desulfurization process was studied. In this desulfurization method, polyethylene glycol was used as the extractant, and sodium borohydride was used as the reductant. Several different simulated fuels were prepared by dissolving thiophenic sulfides, methylbenzene and hexylene in octane. The results showed that methylbenzene and olefins had different effects on different sulfur compounds during this desulfurization process. The extraction and reduction mechanisms were also explained. Four factors could affect the desulfurization performance: (1) intermolecular hydrogen bonding: (a) active O bonding with aromatic H or (b) S bonding with H atoms in hydroxide radicals, (2) “like-dissolves-like” interactions between polyethylene glycol and thiophenic sulfides, (3) the methyl steric hindrance effect and the electron density of sulfur atoms, and (4) the combination of S atoms with produced nickel boride to form active desulfurization centres. The desulfurization reaction path was also deduced according to the GC/MS results.

Abstract:Redox-active benzimidazolium sulfonamides as thiolating reagents have been developed for reductive C-S bond coupling. The IMDN-SO2R reagent provides a bench-stable cationic precursor to generate a portfolio of highly active N-S intermediates, which can be successfully applied in cross-electrophilic coupling with various organic halides. The employment of an electrophilic sulfur source solved the problem of catalyst deactivation and avoided odorous thiols, featuring practical conditions, broad substrate scope, and excellent tolerance.

Abstract:Cadmium sulfide (CdS)-based photocatalysts are prepared following a hydrothermal procedure (with CdCl2 and thiourea as precursors). The HydroThermal material annealed (CdS-HTa) is crystalline with a band gap of 2.31 eV. Photoelectrochemical investigation indicates a very reducing photo-potential of −0.9 V, which is very similar to that of commercial CdS. CdS-HTa, albeit having similar reducing properties, is more active than commercial CdS in the reductive dehalogenation of 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (dalapon) to propionic acid. Spectroscopic, electro-, and photoelectrochemical investigation show that photocatalytic properties of CdS are correlated to its electronic structure. The reductive dehalogenation of dalapon has a double significance: on one hand, it represents a demanding reductive process for a photocatalyst, and on the other hand, it has a peculiar interest in water treatment because dalapon can be considered a representative molecule of persistent organic pollutants and is one of the most important disinfection by products, whose removal from the water is the final obstacle to its complete reuse. HPLC-MS investigation points out that complete disappearance of dalapon passes through 2-monochloropropionic acid and leads to propionic acid as the final product. CdS-HTa requires very mild working conditions (room temperature, atmospheric pressure, natural pH), and it is stable and recyclable without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:Trifluoromethylation‐based difunctionalization of alkenes provides a step‐economical route to CF3‐containing polyfunctionalized organics. New and scalable process is highly desired in this field. Here, we report a simple and environmentally benign method for olefinic thiocyanotrifluoromethylation. By the use of PhICF3Cl as unique CF3 agent and NaSCN as the SCN source, the difunctionalization of alkenes selectively occurs on water at ambient condition. Mechanism studies suggest a radical process in which SCN anion is proposed to act as not only reductive initiator but also S‐nucleophile. All tested reactions are compatible with mono‐, di‐, tri‐, and tetra‐substituted alkenes and with high functional group tolerance. This method is also suitable for the selenocyanotrifluoromethylation of alkenes. Therefore, a sustainable platform has been established to synthesize valuable β‐trifluoromethylated thio(seleno)cyanates in green way. Abstract:Abstract A highly efficient and convenient method for the water‐involved synthesis of β‐keto dithiocarbamates has been developed. In the presence of minimal water, the desired products were obtained in good to excellent yields by using thiuram disulfide reagents and substituted α‐haloacetophenones as starting materials. This protocol features high atom economy, mild conditions, good functional tolerance and good to excellent yields, showing potential value for the preparation of some biologically and pharmaceutically active compounds.

Abstract:1,2-Dibromides and bromohydrin p-toluenesulphonates of favorable geometry are readily reduced by lithium aluminum hydride in good yield to the corresponding olefin. Small quantities of water are found to have a temporaryacceleratingeffect on the reduction. The normal course of the reaction is a trans elimination, but when steric factors inhibit this, then substitution or cis elimination reactions may occur. It is shown that the cis elimination in the case of cis-1,2-dibromocyclohexane cannot involve reduction to the monobromide followed by dehydrobromination to the olefin. The reaction of some other 1,2-dihalides and related compounds with lithium aluminum hydride, and the reaction of a 1,2-dibromide with a number of other complex hydrides are reported.A general scheme for the mechanism of the olefin-forming elimination reaction is proposed. The limits that this study places on the possible positions of the reductive elimination of 1,2-dibromides with lithium aluminum hydride within this general scheme are discussed.

Abstract:Herein we report the catalytic deoxygenative reduction of sulfoxides to give sulfides in good to excellent yields. The method was enabled by the combination of Vaska's complex with poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS). This reduction system is highly efficient allowing the reaction to be run at ambient temperature with a low catalyst loading (from 0.4 mol % to 0.001 mol % of Ir). The method also features versatility for diverse type of sulfoxides, and high chemoselectivity for sulfinyl group in the presence of other reducible or sensitive functional groups. Challenging sulfoxides for the reported methods were reduced smoothly. A plausible mechanism involving two catalytic cycles was suggested. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by gram-scale syntheses, and by the late-stage modification of multifunctional pharmaceuticals leading to a sulfide drug, two prodrugs, and some pharmacophores. The convenient additive-free and extraction-free protocol, the efficiency allowing lowering catalyst loading to 0.001 mol % (Ir), and the use of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, a solvent produced from renewable resources, jointly constitute the sustainability of this method.
